• Domain Name from 123-reg, VPS from Linode. How to point to Google Mail for Business?

  I have bought a domain from 123-reg.co.uk and have successfully pointed it to the IP Address of my Linode VPS so that going to the domain serves up the pages from the Apache server running on the VPS. The instructions I followed to do this are : Now, I am trying to get the domain's mail handled by Google Apps for Business. I have tried updating the MX records at Linode following this tutorial : http://library.linode.com/email/google-mail And also followed the instructions to update the MX Records in 123-reg's control panel : I am slightly confused now. Where should I be adding the MX records? In my domain registrar's control panel or in Linode's VPS? Both have options to update the MX records.

• How to structure an enterprise MVC app, and where does Business Logic go?

As far as I can tell: Controller: deals with routing requests View: deals with presentation of data Model: looks a whole lot like a Data Access layer Where does the Business Logic go? Take a large enterprise application with: Several different sources of data (WCF, WebServices and ADO) tied together in a data access layer (useing multiple different DTOs). A lot business logic segmented over several dlls. What is an appropriate way for an MVC web application to sit on top of this (in terms of code and project structure)? The example I have seen where everything just goes in the Model folder don't seem like they are appropriate for very large applications. Thanks for any advice!

• Microsoft Business Intelligence. Is what I am trying to do possible?

  Hi guys, I have been charged with the task of analysing the log table of my company's website. This table contains a user's click path throughout the website for a given session. My company is looking to understand/spot trends based on the 'click paths' of our users. In doing so, identify groups of users that take on a certain 'click path' based on age/geography and so on. As you can tell from the title, I am completely new to BI and its capabilities so I was wondering: Are our objectives attainable? How should I go about doing this? I am currently reading books online as well as other e-books I have found. All signs seem to suggest this is possible via sequence clustering. Although the exact implementation and tweaks involved are currently lost on me. Therefore, if anyone has first hand experience in such an undertaking, I would be awesome if you could share it here. I want to build a small test network that has both wireless and also wired clients, a printer, a laptop, a desktop, and server (I have 2x 1TB drives of data that I want to be available to all computers). • What is the Best Internet Provider in the Salt Lake Valley for hosting your future online business f

  This is for people familiar with the ISP scene in Salt Lake. Also, UTOPIA is not available in my neighborhood yet. I'm looking for comparisons between Comcast, Qwest, and especially other providers I'm not aware of. While I will have online backup (of course!), I want to host some things from my own home at the start of my business. Once money starts flowing in, I will move to a hosted provider, but in the meantime I would like a provider which provides fast (1+ mb/s at least) upload speeds (fast download a given), a static IP, and especially a reasonable price.

  Hello, I've tried to install vmware server 2 on a small business server 2008 host and IIS 7 stopped working. Everytime I tried to access any website on the server including OWA I get HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. I've tried to restart the IIS services and websites with no luck. Removed vmware server and the problem persists. There are no errors in the application logs concerning IIS or anything related. I'm stumped. Does anyone have an idea what's happenning here and how to fix it?

• HTTPS vs. VPN for communication between business partners?

  A business partner has asked to set up a site-to-site VPN just so that a few servers can communicate with each other over HTTPS. I'm convinced this isn't necessary, or even desirable. To be fair it must be part of a wider policy, potentially even a legal requirement. However I'd like to convince them to simply offer an IP to us (and us only) and a port of their choosing for HTTPS. Has anyone had a similar experience, or had to come up with a cast-iron argument against a VPN? Allow me to expand a little - we have a web service that initiates a connection to the partner's corresponding service using an encrypted HTTP connection. The connection uses a client certificate to authenticate. The connection is firewalled so only our IPs can contact the service. So why is a VPN necessary?

• Is it safe/wise to run Drupal alongside bespoke business web apps in production?

  I'm interested to know the general community feeling about the safety of running Drupal alongside bespoke, business critial ASP.NET MVC apps on a production server. Previously my employer's Drupal based 'visitor website' was hosted as a managed service with a 3rd party. While the LoB sites were hosted in-house. That 3rd party is no longer available so I'm considering my options: Bring Drupal in-house Find another 3rd party My concern is that I have little experience with Drupal administration (and no experience securing it) and that the addition of PHP to my IIS server poses a security risk. Is there a best practice that I can follow in this situation?

• Moving a copied layer group precisely in GIMP to make a paper of business cards?

  I found a template with space for 10 business cards, without extra space anywhere. Using GIMP 2.8.10, I made the design in top left slot and now I need to get that to the other slots. What is the best way to achieve that ? Using mouse is out of question for lack of precision and keyboard takes too long and still isn't completely precise, where we obviously can't afford lack of precision. Though, I'm no artist. The problem is that the slot's contents aren't anywhere same size as the slot itself.

• Why are the prices for broadband bandwidth at data centers much higher than consumer/small business offerings?

  The prices for broadband bandwidth at data centers are sometimes as much as 10x higher than for a typical small business/consumer connection, at least where I live. Now, I understand those are two differend kind of products, but what exactly are the differences? Is it mainly because the bandwidth you get at a data center is guaranteed (CIR), while a consumer offer lists maximal bandwidth (EIR/MIR)? Or are there other factors as well? (Note: my previous, much more specific question on the same general topic was closed as not constructive. I tried to extract the core issue and present it in a way that can be answered objectively. If you feel that this question is still bad and should be closed, please care to comment and explain why.)

• Move email off Small Business Server to Google Apps, retain other SBS functions?

  Recently, an in-house Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 was installed where I work. Unfortunately, our buildings have a bad electrical power supply and we suffer frequent outages. We have a large percentage of staff working off-site. Now when the power goes off here, everyone everywhere loses email functionality. I have been assigned to research the possibility of routing our email to Google Apps while maintaining LAN functions on the SBS. I haven't worked with Microsoft products for several years now, so do not know how SBS is structured. Can anyone here tell me if this is possible, or point me to good resources that explain our options?

  Data Quality Governance Data quality is very important to every organization, bad data cost an organization time, money, and resources that could be prevented if the proper governance was put in to place.  Data Governance Program Criteria: Support from Executive Management and all Business Units Data Stewardship Program  Cross Functional Team of Data Stewards Data Governance Committee Quality Structured Data It should go without saying but any successful project in today’s business world must get buy in from executive management and all stakeholders involved with the project. If management does not fully support a project because they see it is in there and the company’s best interest then they will remove/eliminate funding, resources and allocated time to work on the project. In essence they can render a project dead until it is official killed by the business. In addition, buy in from stake holders is also very important because they can cause delays increased spending in time, money and resources because they do not support a project. Data Stewardship programs are administered by a data steward manager who primary focus is to support, train and manage a cross functional data stewards team. A cross functional team of data stewards are pulled from various departments act to ensure that all systems work to ensure that an organization’s goals are achieved. Typically, data stewards are subject matter experts that act as mediators between their respective departments and IT. Data Quality Procedures Data Governance Committees are composed of data stewards, Upper management, IT Leadership and various subject matter experts depending on a company. The primary goal of this committee is to define strategic goals, coordinate activities, set data standards and offer data guidelines for the business. Data Quality Policies In 1997, Claudia Imhoff defined a Data Stewardship’s responsibility as to approve business naming standards, develop consistent data definitions, determine data aliases, develop standard calculations and derivations, document the business rules of the corporation, monitor the quality of the data in the data warehouse, define security requirements, and so forth. She further explains data stewards responsible for creating and enforcing polices on the following but not limited to issues. • EBS Seed Data Comparison Reports Now Available

  Earlier this year we released a reporting tool that reports on the differences in E-Business Suite database objects between one release and another.  That's a very useful reference, but EBS defaults are delivered as seed data within the database objects themselves. What about the differences in this seed data between one release and another?   Distributed N-Tier client/server architecture allows for segments of an application to be broken up and distributed across multiple locations on a network.  Listed below are standard tiers in a Distributed N-Tier System. End-User Client Tier The End-User Client is responsible for sending and receiving requests from web servers and other applications servers and translating the responses so that the End-User can interpret the data effectively. The primary roles for this tier are to communicate with servers and translate server responses back to the end-user to interpret. Business-Specific Functions Validate Data Display Data Send Data to Webserver Web Server Tier The Web server tier processes new requests for information coming in from the HTTP and HTTPS ports. This primarily handles the generation of user interfaces and calls the application server when needed to access Data and business logic when needed. • Hiring New IT Employees versus Promoting Internally for IT Positions

  Recently I was asked my opinion regarding the hiring of IT professionals in regards to the option of hiring new IT employees versus promoting internally for IT positions. After thinking a little more about this question regarding staffing, specifically pertaining to promoting internally verses new employees; I think my answer to this question is that it truly depends on the situation. However, in most cases I would side with promoting internally. The key factors in this decision should be based on a company/department’s current values, culture, attitude, and existing priorities.  For example if a company values retaining all of its hard earned business knowledge then they would tend to promote existing employees internal over hiring a new employee. Moreover, the company will have to pay to train an existing employee to learn a new technology and the learning curve for some technologies can be very steep. Conversely, if a company values new technologies and technical proficiency over business knowledge then a company would tend to hire new employees because they may already have experience with a technology that the company is planning on using. In this scenario, the company would have to take on the additional overhead of allowing a new employee to learn how the business operates prior to them being fully effective. To illustrate my points above let us look at contractor that builds in ground pools for example.  He has the option to hire employees that are very strong but use small shovels to dig, or employees weak in physical strength but use large shovels to dig. Which employee should the contractor use to dig a hole for a new in ground pool? If we compare the possible candidates for this job we will find that they are very similar to hiring someone internally verses a new hire. The first example represents the existing workers that are very strong regarding the understanding how the business operates and the reasons why in a specific manner. However this employee could be potentially weaker than an outsider pertaining to specific technologies and would need some time to build their technical prowess for a new position much like the strong worker upgrading their shovels in order to remove more dirt at once when digging. The other employee is very similar to hiring a new person that may already have the large shovel but will need to increase their strength in order to use the shovel properly and efficiently so that they can move a maximum amount of dirt in a minimal amount of time. This can be compared to new employ learning how a business operates before they can be fully functional and integrated in the company/department. Another key factor in this dilemma pertains to existing employee and their passion for their work, their ability to accept new responsibility when given, and the willingness to take on responsibilities when they see a need in the business. As much as possible should be considered in this decision down to the mood of the team, the quality of existing staff, learning cure for both technology and business, and the potential side effects of the existing staff.  In addition, there are many more consideration based on the current team/department/companies culture and mood. There are several factors that need to be considered when promoting an individual or hiring new blood for a team. They both can provide great benefits as well as create controversy to a group. Personally, staffing especially in the IT world is like building a large scale system in that all of the components and modules must fit together and preform as one cohesive system in the same way a team must come together using their individually acquired skills so that they can work as one team.  If a module is out of place or is nonexistent then the rest of the team will suffer until the all of its issues are addressed and resolved. Benefits of Promoting Internally Internal promotions give employees a reason to constantly upgrade their technology, business, and communication skills if they want to further their career Employees can control their own destiny based on personal desires Employee already knows how the business operates Companies can save money by promoting internally because the initial overhead of allowing new hires to learn how a company operates is very expensive Newly promoted employees can assist in training their replacements while transitioning to their new role within a company. Existing employees already have a proven track record in regards fitting in with the business culture; this is always an unknown with all new hires Benefits of a New Hire New employees can energize and excite existing employees New employees can bring new ideas and advancements in technology New employees can offer a different perspective on existing issues based on their past experience. As you can see the decision to promote an existing employee from within a company verses hiring a new person should be based on several factors that should ultimately place the business in the best possible situation for the immediate and long term future. How would you handle this situation? Would you hire a new employee or promote from within?
