• Alternative approach to OpenGL View on top of Camera

  Hi, the traditional way of doing a camera preview background with OpenGL on the front is to take two SurfaceViews(one for the camera another for OpenGL) and stack them on top of each other. The problem is that stacking SurfaceViews is discouraged: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/4850fe5c314a3dc6 So what alternatives are there? I was considering the following: Subclass GlSurfaceView, and then call set the Camera preview onto the holder of this subclass: Camera.setPreviewDisplay(mHolder); Don't use GLSurfaceView, instead create your own SurfaceView subclass where you display the Camera preview onto the holder and also draw your openGL. This would require to use OpenGL without GLSurfaceView, has anyone done this before? I'm not sure if this even is possible or makes sense, since it implies displaying the camera preview onto the holder of the surface and at the same time drawing OpenGL on the same surface. Is there any other sensible alternative to solving the problem without using two SurfaceViews? Thanks!

• Why is my JavaScript Twitter feed not working in Internet Explorer?

  We're rolling out a redesign of helpcurenow.org, and we've implemented a Twitter feed in the footer. (I'm the design & front end guy, my coworker is the scripting & backend guy). All is well with the Twitter feed in all major browsers except internet explorer, version 8 and later. However we have no clue why IE is not pulling the feed at all.   Site which I am developing has a menu with drop downs, which is always on top and content is scrollable. Some of content are embeded video from various sources, which appears over top navigation. For youtube, we find solution by adding extra parameter: <param name="wmode" value="opaque" /> which resolve this issue, but what can i do to fix other video sources? • Again, what version control system to choose?

  Please excuse me for probably a newbie hundred-times-chewed question. I have no experience with version control systems except of using Visual Source Safe in a project done by 2 people sitting in front of each other (which has shown VSS quite sack of boulders, not anything useful). Right now I am looking to grok-in using some modern VCS. Here are the preferences in descending priority order: Platform-agnostic. Pretty pleasant to use With Visual Studio 2010 on Windows as well as With NetBeans 6.9 and Eclipse 3.6 on Linux and Mac. Convenient and efficient for mutually-dependent projects done by teams of 1-10 and consisting of files of quite a diverse selection of types. Including early-stage projects with unstable design and experimenting. Modern. As fresh and future-technology-feature-rich as possible. Free & open-source. Should I take a closer look at SVN, Mercurial, GIT, Bazaar, or something else?

• summer experiment: GWT & python for a trading game- arch question

  Hi, As a summer learning experiment, I'm thinking of coding up a web front end for a trading game i wrote in python, that generates share prices and random snippets of text. I am sort of struggling with how this should work on the back-end though. I'd rather have my GWT client page interact with the python share price generator, than to try and re-code it in java. I suppose i could use an sqlite db, and then use jdbc to pick up the prices, but i was wondering if there is a better way, for me to be able to poll some python script either from my client page, or from the serverside java code ? • Parsing log files in a folder in ColdFusion

  The problem is there is a folder ./log/ containing the files like: jan2010.xml, feb2010.xml, mar2010.xml, jan2009.xml, feb2009.xml, mar2009.xml ... each xml file would like: <root><record name="bob" spend="20"></record>...(more records)</root> I want to write a piece of ColdFusion code (log.cfm) that simply parsing those xml files. For the front end I would let user to choose a year, then the click submit button. All the content in that year will be show up in separate table by month. Each table shows the total money spent for each person. like: person cost bob 200 mike 300 Total 500 Thanks.

  Hi, I am using the .Net memebership system, and uptil now I haven't had any real troubles with it. I now have a overlay where a user can create a profile. When the profile is created I just want to redirect to the same page, and not to the default page or the return url - which doesn't exists. I have tried to stop the FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage response, but with no effect: FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage(username, false); // End the redirect so it doesnt redirect to default url (front-page) Response.End(); Response.Redirect(Request.RawUrl); Does anyone have an idea to how this can be solved?

• Problem with ranking of search results in SharePoint 2007 if using the CONTAINS predicate

  While writing a front-end for the SharePoint Search web service for work, I did some quick testing with the MOSS Search Tool to make sure things were working right under the hood. What I found was that queries composed only of CONTAINS predicates (FREETEXT ones were fine) would have a rank of 1000 for any results that were returned. According to the documentation (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms544086.aspx): "If the query returns a document because a non–full-text predicate evaluates to TRUE for that document, the rank value is calculated as 1000." Given that the behaviour I am seeing seems to contradict the documentation, is it the case that all queries that use only the CONTAINS predicate will produce ranking like this?

• PHP, include with parameters

  hi! I have a PHP-file which will be called from a form. So it gets parameters over $_GET. Now I need the exact same functionality of this file, but not in such a form-call. I will include it in normal code with fixed parameters (which normally come from the form). So my file can work with the form AND without it. I know only the way with include and setting the $_GET in front of it. But I am not sure this is the most elegant way (I dont like the idea of setting things like $_GET). any other ways of doing this? br, chris

• Cannot Translate to SQL using Select(x => Func(x))

  I'm slowly learning the ins and outs of LINQtoSQL, but this is confusing me. Here is the statement I have: IQueryable<IEvent> events = (from e in db.getEvents() select e).Select(x => SelectEvent(x, null)); What the SelectEvent does can be explained in this answer here. I am not using the .toList() function as I don't want potentially thousands of records brought into memory. public IEvent SelectEvent(SqlServer.Event ev, EventType? type) { // Create an object which implements IEvent // I don't have the code in front of me, so forgive the lack of code } My question is really for the Select() method. I get the "Cannot translate to SQL" error and the Select() is listed in the error message. Clueless on this one :-/.

• What is a good Very-High level UI framework for JavaScript?

  I need to write a temporary Web-based graphical front-end for a custom server system. In this case performance and scalability aren't issues, since at most 10 people may check the system simultaneously. Also it should be PHP or Python (server) & JavaScript (client) (can't use Flex or Silverlight for very specific non-programming related issues). So I know I could use YUI or jQuery, but was wondering if there is something even more high-level that would say allow me to write such a little project within a few hours of work, and get done with it. Basically I want to be as lazy as possible (this is throw-away code anyways) and get the job done in as little time as possible. Any suggestions?

• Scrollable display of multiple video icons

  Hello, I want to have multiple video icons at the top my website's front page. I will have about 20 or so which won't fit on one line (I want to keep the videos on one like) so I thought of having two button on the right of the group and on the left of the group where you click to scroll and view more videos. Do you know an easy way to do this? I can pass in the video links from the server in different Divs or anyway that will make it easy. I thought of using AJAX and pass it different set every time from the server with every click (I'm using Rails and it's fairly easy to do it) but that will be an extra load on the server which I'm trying to avoid. I'd rather send all the icons at once and let the JavaScript handle the scrolling. I thought of using iFrame but I don't like the idea of scrollbar and wanted to be more like button Any ideas? • Best way to structure AJAX for a Zend Framework application

  Sorry, but there's a lot of outdated and just plain bad information for Zend Framework, since it has changed so much over the years and is so flexible. I thought of having an AJAX module service layer, with controllers and actions that interact with my model. Easy, but not very extensible and would violate DRY. If I change the logistics of some process I'll have to edit the AJAX controllers and the normal controllers. So ideally I would load the exact same actions for both javascript and non-javascript users. I have thought about maybe checking for $_POST['ajax'], if it is set I would load a different (json'y) view for the data. Was wondering how/a good way to do this (front controller plugin I imagine?) or if someone can point me to an UP TO DATE tutorial that describes a really good way for building a larger ajax application. thx

• Should I log my website's 404 errors?

  I have an ASP.NET website, but this question isn't really about technology, it is rather about practice. Should we log our 404 errors? My reasoning: This is a potential vulnerable point because a simple unfriendly user may fill up your hard drive in no time just by requesting wrong URLs! Some browsers often request resources up front - like for example favicon.ico, even if its not there. This is really annoying. But really I would like to know about a broken link if there exists one in my websites. Should I depend on the URL referrer? The problem with the URL referrer is that I cannot distinguish my internal redirect which may be broken with an unfriendly one from outside. What does the practice suggest?

  Hello i am designing a front end for Festival TTS using it's C++ API Everything is working fine in my programme but i have a problem that i am giving a drop down option to user to select other languages when user select a language from drop down then festival tts shows a message on console saying: SIOD:ran out of storage This message only shows if the text given to festival TTS is greater then 5 or 6 lines. i think this message comes because SIOD's heap is not free when i am going to call a new language. The Client gives the name of the DVD he wants to rent. ... n. ...I will later have to form an association between a new instance of "RentDVD" class concept to the current Client c. My Domain Model is something like: I've made the Contract for the first and second operations as: Preconditions: none Postconditions: there exists a Client c such that c.clientNumber = clientNumber. Now, I don't know if I should form an association between this Client c and the DVDStore(that I intend to use as front-end). If I don't make the association, how will I later be able to "reference" this same Client? Should I be making an association between Client and a different concept? Thanks

• How can I force input to uppercase in an asp.net textbox?

  I'm writing an asp.net application. I have a textbox on a webform and I want to force whatever the user types to upper case. I'd like to do this on the front end. You should also note that there is a validation control on this textbox, so I want to make sure the solution doesn't interfere with the asp.net validation. Clarification: It appears that the CSS text-tranform makes the user input appear in uppercase, however under the hood, it's still lower case as the validation control fails. You see, my validation control checks to see if a valid state code is entered, however the regex expression I"m using only works with uppercase characters.

• How do people manage changes to common library files stored across mutiple (Mercurial) repositories?

  This is perhaps not a question unique to Mercurial, but that's the SCM that I've been using most lately. I work on multiple projects and tend to copy source code for libraries or utilities from a previous project to get a leg up on starting a new project. The problem comes in when I want to merge all the changes I made in my latest project, back into a "master" copy of those shared library files. Since the files stored in disjoint repositories will have distinct version histories, Mercurial won't be able to perform an intelligent merge if I just copy the files back to the master repo (or even between two independent projects). I'm looking for an easy way to preserve the change history so I can merge library files back to the master with a minimum of external record keeping (which is one of the reasons I'm using SVN less as merges require remembering when copies were made across branches). Perhaps I need to do a bit more up-front organization of my repository to prepare for a future merge back to a common master.

HTTP/1.1 401 Non-Autorisé I shouldn't hit the authentification, since my link has a valid ticket (I don't hit authentification when i display normally my picture)

Expected it to display on same line as "Lorem ipsum". Displays fine in IE8 and FF3.5. Any fixes? Chrome 5.0.375.38 on Win7 x64

  This question is an updated version of a previous question I have asked on here. I am new to client-server model with SQL Server as the relational database. I have read that public access to SQL Server is not secure. If direct access to the database is not a good practice, then what kind of layer should be placed between the server and the client? Note that I have a desktop application that will serve as the client and a remote SQL Server database that will provide data to the client. The client will input their username and password in order to see their data. I have heard of terms like VPN, ISA, TMG, Terminal Services, proxy server, and so on. I need a fast and secure n-tier architecture. P.S. I have heard of web services in front of the database. Can I use WCF to retrieve, update, insert data? Would it be a good approach in terms of security and performance?

• Code igniter authentication code in controller security question

  I have a main controller to handle the very front-end of my authentication system, it handles login, logout, update user info, etc. functions that I anticipate calling by POST'ing from views/forms. What about something like a "delete_user" function though? My thoughts are a button in someones admin panel would say "Delete Account" and it would post to "/auth/delete", and the function would delete the user based on their session username or id. This seems a bit open ended, you could send out a link to someone and when they opened it while in that application it would delete their account.. Whats the best way to handle this?

• Export view data programmatically in Access/SQL Server

  We have an Access application front-end connected to a SQL Server 2000 database. We would like to be able to programmatically export the results of some views to whatever format we can (ideally Excel, but CSV / tab delimited is fine). Up until now we've just hit F11, opened up the view, and hit File-Save As, but we're starting to get results with more than 16,000 results, which can't be exported. I'd like some sort of server side stored procedure we can trigger that will do this. I'm aware of the sp_makewebtask procedure that does this, however it requires administrative rights on the server, and for obvious reasons we can't give that to everyone. Any ideas?
