• Asp.Net Random Error

  At random times, twice in the past two weeks, the we application will start to error and not work until I recycle the app pool in IIS. • Modify Jquery UI slider control

  I use the Jquery UI slider control. My slider has a width of 200px. I would like the center of my left handle is shifted 14px to the right and the center of my right handle is offset to the left of 14px. So, my good slider will more than 172px (200-14-14). The background-image measure good 200px. The length of 14px is calculated as follows: width of the handle (28px) / 2. Can you help me solve this mystery? Thank you in advance. .ui-slider .ui-slider-handle { width:28px; height:28px; background:url(images/bulle.png) no-repeat 0 0; overflow: hidden; position:absolute; margin-left:0px; top: -7px; border-style:none; cursor:help; }? I use "margin-left:0px;" to delete the "margin-left:-14px" by default. But, my right handle spring 28px to the right ! Help me please !

• WPF: issue updating UI from background thread

  My code launches a background thread. The background thread makes changes and wants the UI in the main thread to update. The code that launches the thread then waits looks something like: Thread fThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(PerformSync)); fThread.IsBackground = true; fThread.Start(); fThread.Join(); MessageBox.Show("Synchronization complete"); When the background wants to update the UI, it sets a StatusMessage and calls the code below: static StatusMessage _statusMessage; public delegate void AddStatusDelegate(); private void AddStatus() { AddStatusDelegate methodForUIThread = delegate { _statusMessageList.Add(_statusMessage); }; this.Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(methodForUIThread, System.Windows.Threading.DispatcherPriority.Send); } _statusMessageList is an ObservableCollection that is the source for a ListBox. The AddStatus method is called but the code on the main thread never executes - that is, _statusMessage is not added to _statusMessageList while the thread is executing. However, once it is complete (fThread.Join() returns), all the stacked up calls on the main thread are executed. But, if I display a message box between the calls to fThread.Start() and fThread.Join(), then the status messages are updated properly. What do I need to change so that the code in the main thread executes (UI updates) while waiting for the thread to terminate? Thanks.

• jQuery UI Accordion 1.6

  I'm using the jQuery UI Accordion 1.6 (http://docs.jquery.com/UI/Accordion), I've changed it a bit and made it work as I need and want it to work. There is just a few things off about it, but one of the major ones is something I just simply can't figure out how to make it work. The plugin is working as intended, it actually closes, opens, opens again, closes all together, etc. However, I'm trying to get the "Posted by..." information right underneath the Headline text. Also, I want the AUTHOR and 0 comments part to be a separate link, the problem is that they are inside the A CLASS (which opens the accordion). Maybe this isn't even a issue with the plugin, but I've run up on options. The jQuery is calling "A" here: I've tried switching this A to a div, but it just breaks. I thought, "Oh I have to alter my CSS", but either I'm doing it wrong, or its not even a jQuery issue, but a CSS one...I just can't figure this out rahhh@#$! Any help would be appreciated. • How to Customize the File Open/Save Dialog Box in Windows

  Generally, there are two kinds of Open/Save dialog boxes in Windows. One kind looks like Windows Explorer, with the tree on the left containing Favorites, Libraries, Computer, etc. The other kind contains a vertical toolbar, called the Places Bar. The Windows Explorer-style Open/Save dialog box can be customized by adding your own folders to the Favorites list. You can, then, click the arrows to the left of the main items, except the Favorites, to collapse them, leaving only the list of default and custom Favorites. The Places Bar is located along the left side of the File Open/Save dialog box and contains buttons providing access to frequently-used folders. The default buttons on the Places Bar are links to Recent Places, Desktop, Libraries, Computer, and Network. However, you change these links to be links to custom folders of your choice. • Skinning af:selectOneChoice

  A question came in today about how to skin the selection button ()  of an <af:selectOneChoice>. If you have a delve in the ADF Skinning editor, you'll find that there are selectors for the selectOneChoice when in compact mode (af|selectOneChoice::compact-dropdown-icon-style), however, there is not a selector for the icon in the "normal" mode. I had a quick delve into the skinning source files that you can find in the adf-richclient-impl-11.jar and likewise there seemed to be no association there. However, a quick sample page and a peek with Chrome developer tools revealed the problem.  The af:selectOneChoice gets rendered in the browser as a good old <select> element (reasonable enough!). Herein lies the problem, and the reason why there is no skin selector. The <select> HTML element does not have a standard way of replacing the image used for the dropdown button.  If you have a search around with your favorite search engine, you can find various workarounds and solutions for this.  For example, using Chrome and Safari you can define the following for the select element: select {   -webkit-appearance: listbox;   background-image: url(blob.png);    background-position: center right;   background-repeat: no-repeat;   } Which gives a very exciting select box:  .

• Do abstractions have to reduce code readability?

  A good developer I work with told me recently about some difficulty he had in implementing a feature in some code we had inherited; he said the problem was that the code was difficult to follow. From that, I looked deeper into the product and realised how difficult it was to see the code path. It used so many interfaces and abstract layers, that trying to understand where things began and ended was quite difficult. It got me thinking about the times I had looked at past projects (before I was so aware of clean code principles) and found it extremely difficult to get around in the project, mainly because my code navigation tools would always land me at an interface. It would take a lot of extra effort to find the concrete implementation or where something was wired up in some plugin type architecture. I know some developers strictly turn down dependency injection containers for this very reason. It confuses the path of the software so much that the difficulty of code navigation is exponentially increased. My question is: when a framework or pattern introduces so much overhead like this, is it worth it? Is it a symptom of a poorly implemented pattern? I guess a developer should look to the bigger picture of what that abstractions brings to the project to help them get through the frustration. Usually though, it's difficult to make them see that big picture. I know I've failed to sell the needs of IOC and DI with TDD. For those developers, use of those tools just cramps code readability far too much.

• Mouse input not updating in custom XNA/Winforms panel

  I have a custom Panel residing within my WinForm. the custom Panel holds the XNA rendering. So far, I've rendered an 3D test model. What I'm doing now is trying to handle the input.Using a camera from another working game, keyboard input works fine moving the camera in all 6 directions. But when it comes to handling the mouse to yaw and pitch the camera, nothing happens. I've searched about to see if anyone has come across this problem, but found no testable solutions to my problem. Does anyone understand as to what may be causing the Mouse not to be called when moved? We used Ogre 3d as prototype and now we are developing it from base The engine is wrapped up in simple game that asks the user to select shape (circle, triangle, square...), color and dimensions and renders the image to the screen. • What are some great resources about programming contemporary GUIs and GUI architecture patterns?

  So I've read Martin Fowler's old blog post http://martinfowler.com/eaaDev/uiArchs.html which describes various approaches to building GUI from an architecture point of view, discussing patterns and how they were used. But this blog post was written in 2006. Since then, there must have been some new ideas in the field? I was curious whether anyone knows about a similar guide to GUI architectures, but describing contemporary systems? The reason I'm interested in something abstract and theoretical to read is because it really is difficult and time consuming to ACTUALLY learn how ALL of the contemporary frameworks work, given their diversity and the diversity of the languages they are written in. I am primarily a web developer, so I'm familiar with Rails and some Javascript frameworks. But I would also like to know how GUI is built on Android or in Cocoa or in Windows, but without having to learn all of those things.

• Should I be worried about overengineering programming assignments given during interview process?

  I recently had a phone interview with a company. After that phone interview, I was told to complete a short programming assignment (a small program; shouldn't take more than three hours). I'm only directly instructed to complete the assignment and turn in the code. I was given complete freedom to use any language I wished and was not told exactly how to turn in the code. Immediately I planned on throwing it on Github, writing a test suite for it, using Travis-CI (free continuous integration for public Github repositories) to run the test suites, and using CMake to build the Linux makefiles for Travis-CI. That way, not only can I demonstrate that I understand how to use Git, CMake, Travis-CI, and how to write tests, but I can also simply link to the Travis-CI page so they can see the output of the tests. I figured that'd make it a tiny bit more convenient for the interviewer. Since I know those technologies well, it would add essentially no time to the assignment. However, I'm a bit worried that doing all this for a relatively simple task would look bad. Although it wouldn't add much more time at all for me, I don't want them thinking I spend too much time on things that should be simple.

• Oracle 64-bit assembly throws BadImageFormatException when running unit tests

  We recently upgraded to the 64-bit Oracle client. Since then, Visual Studio 2010 unit tests that hit the database (I know, unit tests shouldn't hit the database--they're not perfect) all fail with this error message:Test method MyProject.Test.SomeTest threw exception: System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'Oracle.DataAccess, Version=4.112.3.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89b483f429c47342' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.I resolved this by changing the test settings to run tests in 64-bit. From the Test menu, go to Edit Test Settings, and pick your settings file. Go to Hosts, and change the "Run tests in 32 bit or 64 bit process" dropdown to "Run tests in 64 bit process on 64 bit machine". Now your tests should run.This fix makes me a little nervous. Visual Studio 2010 and earlier seem to change that file for no apparent reason, add more settings files, etc. If you're not paying attention, you could have TestSettings1.testsettings through TestSettings99.testsettings sitting there and never notice the difference. So it's worth making a note of how to change it in case you have to redo it, and being vigilant about files VS tries to add.I'm not entirely clear on why this was even a problem. Isn't that the point of an MSIL assembly, that it's not specific to the hardware it runs on? An IL disassembler can open the Oracle.DataAccess.dll in question, and in its Runtime property, I see the value "v4.0.30319 / x64". So I guess the assembly was specifically build to target 64-bit platforms only, possibly due to a 64-bit-specific difference in the external Oracle client upon which it depends. Most other assemblies, especially in the .NET Framework, list "msil", and a couple list "x86". So I guess this is another entry in the long list of ways Oracle refuses to play nice with Windows and .NET.If this doesn't solve your problem, you can read others' research into this error, and where to change the same test setting in Visual Studio 2012.

The cons: The relative high time cost of setting up a test. Some alternatives I've seen so far: Optimizely.com VisualWebsiteOptimizer.com Genetify (wiki.github.com/gregdingle/genetify/) Free, open-source, but seems like there's no developer community committed to the project.

• Unit test and Code Coverage of Ant build scripts

  In our development environment We have more and more build scripts for ant to perform the build tasks for several different build jobs. These build scripts sometimes become large and do a lot of things and basically is source code in and of itself. So in a "TDD-world" we should have unit tests and coverage reports for the source code. I found AntUnit and BuildFileTest.java for doing unit tests. But it would also be interesting to know the code coverage of those unit tests. I have been searching google, but have not found anything. Does anyone know of a code coverage tool for Ant build scripts?
