• Perl equivalent to Java's "throws" clausule.

  Is there a way in Perl to declare that a method can throw an error (or die)? I always loved how in Java, a method could handle an Exception and/or throw it. The method signature allows to put "throws MyException", so a good IDE/compiler would know that if you use said method somewhere in your code, you'd have to check for the Exception or declare your function to "throws" the Exception further. I'm unable to find something alike in Perl. A collegue of mine wrote a method which "dies" on incorrect input, but I forget to eval-if($@) it... offcourse the error was only discovered while a user was running the application. (offcourse I doubt if there is any existing IDE that could find these kind of things for Perl, but atleast perl -cw should be able to, no?)

• Java exception: "Can't get a Writer while an OutputStream is already in use" when running xAgent

  I am trying to implement Paul Calhoun's Apache FOP solution for creating PDF's from Xpages (from Notes In 9 #102). I am getting the following java exception when trying to run the xAgent that does the processing -- Can't get a Writer while an OutputStream is already in use The only changes that I have done from Paul's code was to change the package name. I have isolated when the exception happens to the SSJS line: var jce: DominoXMLFO2PDF = new DominoXMLFO2PDF(); All that line does is instantiate the class, there is no custom constructor. I don't believe it is the code itself, but some configuration issue. The SSJS code is in the beforeRenderResponse event where it should be, I haven't changed anything on the xAgent. I have copied the jar files from Paul's sample database to mine, I have verified that the build paths are the same between the two databases. Everything compiles fine (after I did all this.) This exception appears to be an xpages only exception.

• Need to preserve order of elements sent in JSON from Java

  I'm using JSON.org APIs for Java to use JSON in my JSP webapp, I know JSONObject doesn't preserve order of elements the way they are put into it and one has to use JSONArray for that but I don't know how to use it since I need to send key and value both as received from the database, and here I'm sending data to jQuery via JSON where I need the order of data to be maintained. Following is my servlet code, where I'm getting results from the database using ORDER BY and hence I want the order to be exact as returned from the database. Also this JSON object requested using $.post method of jQuery and is used to populate dropdown on reciever page.   Hi I'm tring to convert the following 3 methods from java-actionscript to Objective C. Part of my confusion I think is not knowing what Number types, primitives I should be using. ie in actionscript you have only Number, int, and uint.   I'm currently researching Java libraries to help in building a meta type search engine in the sense of being able to replace any given search engine in the back-end of the application or to simultaneously search using multiple search engines. I'm not interested in the GUI part here, just the generalization of search engine APIs and usage. I'd like to know about the common libraries used to achieve this task and if there are any common patterns used in this case. I imagined that this problem is common enough to be able to find plenty of stuff on Google, but it seems like search is a very proprietary domain and not much information is fed back to the community.

• Restlets with Google App Engine, Java Server Pages, (JSP's), and Shiro authentication

  I'm having difficulty integrating Restlets into my project. I'm using google app engine (GAE) and I also have some java server pages (JSPs) set up. The JSP's never seem to work at the same time as the Restlets, should I only be using one or the other in GAE? I'm also using Shiro (formerly Ki, formerly JSecurity) and I have been unable to get Restlets to work with Shiro's filter for authentication. Are there any issues in particular that I should be aware of? What are other people using to secure restlet apps on GAE? Is Shiro overkill if I just need authentication and some role-based authorization? Thanks so much! Chris

• Flight paths linking placemarks using Java Api For Kml(JAK)

  Currently i'm having a project which requires to set placemarks and link them with polylines (i suppose), lines which have an arc to it, with properly segmented portions to the arc. I've been able to generate kml file with jak library. But i can't produce more den 1 placemark in the kml file. • Image processing in a multhithreaded mode using Java

  Hi Folks, I am supposed to process images in a multithreaded mode using Java. I may having varying number of images where as my number of threads are fixed. I have to process all the images using the fixed set of threads. I am just stuck up on how to do it, I had a look ThreadExecutor and BlockingQueues etc...I am still not clear. What I am doing is, - Get the images and add them in a LinkedBlockingQueue which has runnable code of the image processor. - Create a threadpoolexecutor for which one of the arguements is the LinkedBlockingQueue earlier. - Iterate through a for loop till the queue size and do a threadpoolexecutor.execute(linkedblockingqueue.poll). - all i see is it processes only 100 images which is the minimum thread size passed in LinkedBlockingQueue size. I see I am seriously wrong in my understanding somewhere, how do I process all the images in sets of 100(threads) until they are all done? Any examples or psuedocodes would be highly helpful Thanks! As I understand it, the hash or array or whatever I use to store the called references to the windows opened this way will be lost if the calling window is closed. Is there a way to make this work even if the calling window is closed and reopened? To basically ask the browser: "Do you have a window open with the following URL?" and if so, "What is the reference to that window?" (so I can raise it).

I already tried many different versions, all resulting in "annotation argument needs to be a constant", "illegal start of simple expression".   I would like to achieve something similar to how scala defines Map as both a predefined type and object. In Predef: type Map[A, +B] = collection.immutable.Map[A, B] val Map = collection.immutable.Map //object Map However, I'd like to do this using Java enums (from a shared library). So for example, I'd have some global alias: type Country = my.bespoke.enum.Country val Country = my.bespok.enum.Country //compile error: "object Country is not a value" The reason for this is that I'd like to be able to use code like: if (city.getCountry == Country.UNITED_KINGDOM) //or... if (city.getCountry == UNITED_KINGDOM) Howver, this not possible whilst importing my type alias at the same time. Note: this code would work just fine if I had not declared a predefined type and imported it! Is there some syntax I can use here to achieve this?

• java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/google/appengine/tools/enhancer/Enhance

  I am new to GAE, I follow the instructions on http://code.google.com/eclipse/docs/install-eclipse-3.7.html. I got the installation and registration done pretty fast. But when I tried to build the helloWorld project in Eclipse, before I can do anything, Eclipse gives me an error says "java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/google/appengine/tools/enhancer/Enhance" and it is very weird. Because when you expand the app engine sdk, you can easily find the Enhance class under related jar file. I also tried Enhance e = null; and it is working. It seems that my eclipse just cannot find it. I don't know why it is not working, I am using JDK1.6, I reinstall my eclipse and the google plugins, I even disabled my firewall. Please help!!!

• starting subactivity for the second time causes java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

  Hi there, I am developing a simple app which does a little bit of image-processing. It's divided in two activities; the main one with some display elements and the second one which is used to capture images off the phone's camera. To discribe my problem: I start the app, capture an image (by starting a new Intent with the subactivity) and all data is displayed correctly. If I capture another image after this, I run in an java.lang.OutOfMemoryError - bitmap size exceeds VM budget I dont store the captured bitmap, in the second activity I just extract some data from it and pass it to the main-activity; finishing (finish()) the sub-activity afterwards. I really dont know what I can do about it. • Structuring System Architecture in a Flex Web Application on a Budget (w/o Java)

  I started a project a while back using the following architecture from Adobe Developer Article talking about Creating marketing platforms in Flex. I did my first set of coding locally forgetting that my server did not handle Tomcat. So I said okay, and cut some corners and then some other limitation came up and I cut some more corners. Eventually for a good week or two, it was trying to get the project working with making the ends meet. Layers started to merge. In the end I used a PureMVC (Presentation/Client) - ZendAMF (Communication) - MySql (Data) Layout. It worked but I never felt as though I had some layer just to take care of all the SQL calls to the data.It just felt hacked together So should I keep the above setup and just start from the presentation layer and move downwards like they said in the article or is there a better layering (based on a hosting plan that does not handle Java) I could accomplish ? NOTE: I would just ask the adobe guys but they barely reply on their site. Thanks !

• Java's ThreadPoolExecutor equivalent for C#?

  Hi Guys, I used to make good use of Java's ThreadPoolExecutor class and have yet to find a good equivalent in C#. I know of ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem which is useful in many cases but no good if you want to control the number of threads assigned to a task or have multiple individual queues for different task types. For example I liked to use a ThreadPoolExecutor with a single thread to guarantee sequential execution of asynchronous calls.. Is there an easy way to do this in C#? Is there a non-static thread pool implementation? Thanks, T.

  How do I factor code setting many different fields in a Java object? I would like to factor (set! (. employee name) "Chris") (set! (. employee age) 100) (set! (. employee salary) 5000) to (doseq [field '((name "Chris") (age 100) (salary 5000))] (set! (. employee (first field)) (second field))) However this won't work because the period is a macro, and tries to evaluate (first field) literally. By the way, I understand that setting fields is not good practice. I need to inter-operate with legacy code.

  Hey Guys, Long time reader never posted until now. Im having some trouble with Android, im implementing a library called JJIL its an open source imaging library. My problem is this i need to run some analysis on an image and to do so i need to have it in jjil.core.image format and once those processes are complete i need to convert the changed image from jjil.core.image to java.awt.image. I cant seem to find a method of doing this does anyone have any ideas or have any experience with this? I would be grateful of any help. Danny

• Using gmail as SMTP server in Java web app is slow

  Hi, I was wondering if anyone might be able to explain to me why it's taking nearly 30 seconds each time my Java web app sends an email using Gmail's SMTP server? See the following timestamps: 13/04/2010-22:24:27:281 DEBUG test.service.impl.SynchronousEmailService - Before sending mail. 13/04/2010-22:24:52:625 DEBUG test.service.impl.SynchronousEmailService - After sending mail. I'm using spring's JavaMailSender class with the following settings: email.host=smtp.gmail.com [email protected] email.password=mypassword email.port=465 mail.smtp.auth.required=true Note that the mail is getting sent and I'm receiving it fine, there's just this delay which is resulting in a slow experience for the application user. If you know how I can diagnose the problem myself that would be good too :)

  The following code prints out "vmtDataOrig.creationdate=2012-11-03" VmtData vmtDataOrig = VmtDataDao.getInstance().loadVmt(1); System.out.println("vmtDataOrig.creationdate=" + vmtDataOrig.getCreationDate().toString()); Here is the definition of the creationDate field in the VmtData class: private Date creationDate = null; Here is the hibernate mapping of the creationDate field to the database table column: <property name="creationDate" column="CREATIONDATE" type="date"/> The CREATIONDATE column in the MySQL database table is of type "date", and for the record retrieved it has the value "2012-11-03". The Javadoc for the java.util.Date.toString() method says it is supposed to print the Date object in the form "dow mon dd hh:mm:ss zzz yyyy". Anyone know why it is printing it out in the form "yyyy-MM-dd"?
