• What is a quick way to indent a block of text with spaces for use within a web browser?

  I occasionally have the need to indent a block of text with spaces for use within a web browser, for example, when formatting a code block on this site or in a post on Launchpad. So far I've just done it by hand by copying four spaces to the clipboard and then mashing keys really fast: ?, Home, Ctrl+V (repeat) What is a quicker way to accomplish this, e.g. copying and pasting to another program? a Firefox or Chrome browser extension? a command to directly modify the clipboard contents? an auto-typing program?

• 13.10 hangs on waking from suspend except when suspended from console

  I know waking from suspend is an issue, but this looks like a separate bug. When I suspend 13.10 on HP Pavillion dv6 (AMD 6770M/fglrx 13.10.10) from x, it suspends normally but freezes when waking. I get a black screen with a frozen cursor. But when I suspend from console with sudo pm-suspend, it wakes normally, and I can then get back my x with ctrl-alt-f7. If I suspend by closing lid under x, also freezes when waking up. If I suspend by closing lid under console, it wakes up into the x (?) login, then into a clean session.

• Lubuntu with only Ubuntu's workspace/tiling features

  I searched around for a long time but found nothing. I am moving from Ubuntu to Lubuntu. Everything is great (I am okay with the bland style) except for three features that I use regularly in Ubuntu. 1) Win+w / Win+s zooms out to see an overview of the current workspace and all the workspaces respectively. 2) Ctrl+Alt+num which puts the current application in a specific portion of the workspace. 3) Snap to edge of workspace. How would I get those three features onto Lubuntu? Would that cancel out the benefit of Lubuntu, so I should just stick with Ubuntu (or any distro you can recommend)? Thank you.

• Hide and Unhide Worksheets and Workbooks in Excel 2007 & 2010

  Hiding worksheets can be a simple way to protect data in Excel, or just a way reduce the clutter of a some tabs. Here are a couple very easy ways to hide and unhide worksheets and workbooks in Excel 2007 / 2010. Hiding a Worksheet Select the Worksheet you’d like to hide by clicking on the tab at the bottom. By holding down the Ctrl key while clicking you can select multiple tabs at one time. On the Home tab, click on Format, which can be found in the Cells group. Under Visibility,  select Hide & Unhide, then Hide Sheet.   You can also simply right-click on the tab, and select Hide.   Your worksheet will no longer be visible, however, the data contained in the worksheet can still be referenced on other worksheets.   Unhide a Worksheet To unhide a worksheet, you just do the opposite. On the Home tab, click on Format in the Cells group and then under Visibility,  select Hide & Unhide, then Unhide Sheet.   Or, you can right-click on any visible tab, and select Unhide.   In the Unhide pop up window, select the worksheet to unhide and click “OK.” Note: Although you can hide multiple sheets at once, you can only unhide one sheet at a time. Very Hidden Mode While hidden mode is nice, it’s not exactly ultra-secure. If you’d like to pump the security up a notch, there is also Very Hidden mode. To access Very Hidden setting, we’ll have to use the built-in Visual Basic Editor by hitting the Alt + F11 keys. Select the worksheet you wish to hide from the dropdown list under Properties or by single clicking the worksheet in the VBAProject window. Next, set the Visible property to  2 – xlSheetVeryHidden. Close out of the Visual Basic Editor when finished.   When the Very Hidden attribute is set on a worksheet, Unhide Sheet is still unavailable from within the Format setting on the Home tab.   To remove the Very Hidden attribute and display the worksheet again, go back into the Visual Basic Editor by hitting Alt + F11 again and setting the Visible property back to –1 – xlSheetVisible.  Close out of the Editor when finished. Hiding a Workbook To hide the entire Workbook, select the View tab, and then click the Hide button. You’ll see the Workbook has disappeared. Unhide a Workbook Select the View tab and click Unhide… … and your Workbook will be visible again.   Just a few simple ways to hide and unhide your Excel worksheets and workbooks. • How can I use the Windows key?

  The Windows key seems to not have any use in Ubuntu, but since I'm just coming from Windows I'm used to this key having some function. How can I make good use of the Windows key in Ubuntu? I've seen that I can remap keys in SystemPreferencesKeyboardLayoutOptionsAlt/Win key behavior, but I have no idea what the choices meta, super, hyper mean. The help button in this dialog doesn't give any specifics about them. I've experimented a little and found that meta seems to have some use, like Win+M = Me menu, or Win+S is the shutdown menu, but for some keys (B, I) it's more like Ctrl (bold, italic). Haven't found any further. What would a useful setting be for a Linux newbie?

• Why is the console hanging randomly?

  Ubuntu 10.10 Server x64 installed as Virtual Box VM. Fresh install plus postgresql and tomcat6 installed via aptitude. Rebooted the server and now when I run some command the console hangs. For instance, I run "sudo shutdown now" and then nothing happens but I am not returned to the prompt. I hit CTRL+C and nothing happens except ^C appears on the following line. I can type whatever and it will show up inline. I switch to tty2 and try to login and I only get as far as [username][enter] and that console hangs. One other thing - after "sudo reboot" the console appears to hang (just like above) when shutting down tomcat6. Any idea what's going on or what I should check? Thanks!

How do I send log file contents as mail message, how do I automate the inputs of mail command? so that I can schedule it. Anybody has any idea?

• ubuntu is very slow

  Hello all. I am new with Ubuntu, and it is very slow(even in Ubuntu 2D). The performance is degraded for almost any task. I just reinstalled with amd64, and tried updating the Nvidia drivers with Nvidia Xserver. but it made no difference. This is the output of free -m: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3006 1318 1688 0 61 699 -/+ buffers/cache: 556 2449 Swap: 3064 0 3064 tl;dr - total: 3006, used: 1318 When I see the virtual console with Ctrl+Alt+F2, I see constantly: Assuming Drive Cache: write through; asking for cache data failed; It is very frustrating. • Compiz command plugin won't register keyboard shortcuts

  Per this discussion I've enabled the Compiz commands plugin in order to try to bind some keyboard shortcuts to wmctrl actions. CCSM captures my keystrokes just fine, but no matter what keystroke I try or what command I bind it to (everything from my original intention of binding Super-1, Super-2 etc. to wmctrl -o 0,0, wmctrl -o 2560,0, etc., to binding Ctrl-Alt-Shift-L to gnome-terminal). Basic compiz shortcuts for window switching and so on -- even custom ones -- seem to work fine, but the command plugin doesn't seem to be working at all. I also notice the following symptom: when I open the keyboard shortcut tab in CCSM, the keyboard shortcuts often at first appear blank, though if you click on the blank button, the correct value is still there. Also possibly related, I've noticed that gnome-terminal doesn't seem to notice the Super key, though other apps (e.g. CCSM, Emacs) register it fine. Anyway, it seems like something's eating my keystrokes. Any ideas?

• IntelliJ with Maven compilation

  I have a project that needs Hibernate jars. I added them as dependencies in the pom.xml and Maven compiles my project well. However, in the IDE, all annotations and calls to Hibernate API are marked as unresolved (red). How could I get IntelliJ being able to resolve them ? Is there a way to use Maven when I click on Build Project ? (ctrl+F9) Also, I am confused with the concept of facets within IntelliJ. Do I need them, let's say JPA facets to enable Persistence assistant etc... or there's an option to let Maven take care about ?

• Ubuntu cannot boot after kernel upgrade

  Today I have upgraded the Linux kernel (using the Update Manager), from 3.0.0.16-generic to 3.0.0.17-generic. However, after this update, Ubuntu 11.10 cannot boot anymore. I see a strange message which says "initclt: event failed". And if I press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[F1] it still allows me to log into the text mode. But if I type sudo lightdm, I cannot log into the graphical mode. However, if I choose to boot an older kernel from the GRUB, Ubuntu boots correctly. What should I do, in order to be able to boot the system using the new kernel?

• Batch file to Delete Old Virtual Directories.

  On some servers we have many old Virtual Directories created for previous versions of our application. IIS user interface allows to delete only one in a time. Fortunately we can use IIS scripts as described in How to manage Web sites and Web virtual directories by using command-line scripts in IIS 6.0 I've created batch file DeleteOldVDirs.cmd rem http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816568 rem syntax: iisvdir /delete WebSite [/Virtual Path]Name [/s Computer [/u [Domain\]User /p Password]] REM list all directories and create batch of deletes iisvdir /query "Default Web Site" echo "Enter Ctrl-C  if you want to stop deleting" Pause iisvdir /delete "Default Web Site/VDirName1" iisvdir /delete "Default Web Site/VDirName2" ...   If the name of WebSite or Virtual directory contain spaces(e.g  "Default Web Site"), don't forget to use double quotes. Note that the batch doesn't delete physical directories from flie system.You need to delete them using Windows Explorer, but it does support multiple selection!

• Keyboard shortcuts get randomly reset

  I'm facing a rather weird issue in the past few days after doing a clean install of Ubuntu Oneiric (w/ gnome-shell) on my recently-bought Asus U36SD. I set up my keyboard shortcuts using System Settings Keyboard Shortcuts, and some of them get randomly reset. Most of my shortcuts include the win key (otherwise listed in the keyboard shortcuts as Mod4), but those containing only Mod4 + get reset every two-three reboots. For instance, Mod4 + T (for terminal), gets reset to the standard Ctrl + Alt + T, while Shift + Mod4 + W (for browser) doesn't (I've set up the latter with the Shift key, because it seems that Mod4 + W didn't get intercepted at all. Something similar goes for Mod4 + E for gedit, which only worked once or twice). I have no idea if this is a Ubuntu specific issue, or it's related to gnome-shell or even with my current hardware. Has this happened to any of you? If so, did you manage to fix it?

• Remapping Shift Selection in Gnome Terminal

  Hey so I was hoping somebody could help me out in finding a way to get shift-selection working in gnome-terminal on Ubuntu 11.10. I found the question/bug report below but neither seem to have a solution. I use Emacs for development and being able to select my current line with shift-ctrl-a/e is something I find myself trying to do every couple of minutes. I use 10.04 at work and this is possible so I am not sure what has changed. If it matters I am using Gnome 3 Shell and I use bashish to style my terminal.   Salam(Persian). I need a magnifier like windows 7 magnifier. But I tried "kmag", It is not full_screen, doesn't color inversion, uses part of my desktop and bothers me. I tried "compiz config settings manager" too, I active magnifier and zoom and set the shortcuts of them, But did not work. I tried mouse wheel+ctrl+windows keys but ... . Help me pleas I need win7 magnifier in Ubuntu 12.04. Allah helps you insha'Allah.

• Lock screen does not display all users (ubuntu 14.10)

  When I lock my screen using ctrl+alt+L, I am not able to see other users listed within the lock screen so I can switch instead. The lock screen shows only my name as an option for login, however I would like to switch to other user accounts. In Ubuntu 12.04 it used to show all system available users in lock screen and I was able to switch easily. Last night I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 and this option is gone. How do I set back this option?

• Fails to boot after upgrade, stuck on winbind package

  I started the upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 last night. Once it got the installing packages part I left the computer unattended the rest of the night. When I checked it this morning the screen was blank and I couldn't get it to turn on. So I cycled power, and now I get the "Ubuntu 11.10" screen with the dots underneath, but then it gets to a blank screen and nothing more. I can get to the command line in recovery mode; here's a list of the things I've tried so far sudo apt-get update - the very first repository it checked sat at 0% for a long time (network cable is plugged in), so I cancelled with Ctrl+C Thought it might be a problem with display drivers, so I tried sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx - this gave me an error saying dpkg has been interrupted, manually run sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo dpkg --configure -a this installed / updated a bunch of stuff but got stuck at Starting Winbind daemon winbind Restarted and tried sudo dpkg --configure -a again but it gets stuck at same Windbind step What else can I do to fix this problem?

• Folder missing in external hard drive

  I have been backing up my folders, I am using Seagate Expansion portable Drive. I had created a folder called "|o|o" in the root folder of the portable drive... I copied my latest folders into "|o|o" folder to re-install ubuntu. When I open the portable drive the folder |o|o is not visible, when I ctrl+a and check properties the space used is 122GB, however when I click on the drive to view properties of the drive used space is 260GB. It looks as if the folder is there in the portable drive but I cannot access it... I have tried to view all the hidden files and "|o|o" is still not there. I am using 12.04.Can you please help me to retrieve this folder.

• Stuck while Booting Text Mode in Ubuntu 12.04?

  I edited the /etc/default/grub file and changed: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash” to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”text” This does make Ubuntu boot up into text mode; however, it gets stuck while booting up and it does not show me the login text. Instead it says something like this: Begin running /scripts/init-bottom USB hub found ...More irrelevant things... *Stopping LightDM Display Manager I can press Ctrl + Alt + F2 and see the login and boot up like normal, but is there any reason for this? How can I change it so it does not get get stuck? Edit: After 5 minutes, a new line came up: 557.1206341 ieee80211 phy0: channel change: 5540 -> 5560 failed (3).

• How to get shared bashed history among different tabs

  I used the answer in http://unix.stackexchange.com/a/1292/41729 to enable real-time shared history among separate bash terminals. As explained in the answer above, this is achieved by adding: # avoid duplicates.. export HISTCONTROL=ignoredups:erasedups # append history entries.. shopt -s histappend # After each command, save and reload history export PROMPT_COMMAND="history -a; history -c; history -r; $PROMPT_COMMAND" This works fine if the bash shells are separate (e.g. opening different bash terminals using CTRL+ALT+T. However it doesn't work if I use tabs (from an open terminal `CTRL+SHIFT+T) rather than new windows. Why this difference in behaviour? How can I share the bash history also among various tabs?
