• Is JPA + EJB to much slow (or heavy) for over Internet transactions?

  Hi, I am developing a stand-alone java client application that connects to a Glassfish v3 application for JPA/EJB facade style transactions. In other words, my client application do not connect directly to the database to CRUD, but it transfers JPA objets using EJB stateless sessions. I have scenarios where this client application will be used in an external network connected with a VPN over Internet with a client connection of 512kbp/DSL, and a simple query takes so much time, I'm seeing the traffic graph and when I merge a entity in the client application I see megabytes of traffic (I couldn't believe how a purchase order entity could weight more than 1 mb). I have LAZY fetch in almost every many-to-many relationship, but I have a lot of many-to-one relationships between entities (but this is the great advantage of JPA!). Could I do something to accelerate the the speed of transactions between JPA/EJB server and the remote java client? Thank you in advance.

• Passing C++ object to C++ code through Python?

  Hi all, I have written some physics simulation code in C++ and parsing the input text files is a bottleneck of it. As one of the input parameters, the user has to specify a math function which will be evaluated many times at run-time. The C++ code has some pre-defined function classes for this (they are actually quite complex on the math side) and some limited parsing capability but I am not satisfied with this construction at all. What I need is that both the algorithm and the function evaluation remain speedy, so it is advantageous to keep them both as compiled code (and preferrably, the math functions as C++ function objects). However I thought of glueing the whole simulation together with Python: the user could specify the input parameters in a Python script, while also implementing storage, visualization of the results (matplotlib) and GUI, too, in Python. I know that most of the time, exposing C++ classes can be done, e.g. with SWIG but I still have a question concerning the parsing of the user defined math function in Python: Is it possible to somehow to construct a C++ function object in Python and pass it to the C++ algorithm? E.g. when I call f = WrappedCPPGaussianFunctionClass(sigma=0.5) WrappedCPPAlgorithm(f) in Python, it would return a pointer to a C++ object which would then be passed to a C++ routine requiring such a pointer, or something similar... (don't ask me about memory management in this case, though :S) The point is that no callback should be made to Python code in the algorithm. Later I would like to extend this example to also do some simple expression parsing on the Python side, such as sum or product of functions, and return some compound, parse-tree like C++ object but let's stay at the basics for now.   Sometimes I noticed that a 'save:' operation an a ManagedObjectContext never returns and consumes 100% CPU. I'm using an SQL Store in a GarbageCollected environment (Mac OS X 10.6.3). The disk activity shows about 700 KB/s writing. While having a look at the folder that contains the sqlite database file the "-journal" file appears and disappears, appears and disappears, ... • Is directly executing SQL bad app design?

  I'm developing an iOS application that's a manager/viewer for another project. The idea is the app will be able to process the data stored in a database into a number of visualizations-- the overall effect being similar to cacti. I'm making the visualizations fully user-configurable: the user defines what she wants to see and adds restrictions. She might specify, for instance, to graph a metric over the last three weeks with user accounts that are currently active and aren't based in the United States. My problem is that the only design I can think of is more or less passing direct SQL from the iOS app to the backend server to be executed against the database. I know it's bad practice and everything should be written in terms of stored procedures. But how else do I maintain enough flexiblity to keep fully user-defined queries? While the application does compose the SQL, direct SQL is never visible or injectable by the user. That's all abstracted away in UIDateTimeChoosers, UIPickerViews, and the like.

• Separating merged array of arithmetic and geometric series

  My friend asked me an interseting question. Given an array of positive integers in increasing order. Seperate them in two series, an arithmetic sequence and geometric sequence. The given array is such that a solution do exist. The union of numbers of the two sequence must be the given array. Both series can have common elements i.e. series need not to be disjoint. The ratio of the geometric series can be fractional. Example: Given series : 2,4,6,8,10,12,25 AP: 2,4,6,8,10,12 GP: 4,10,25 I tried taking few examples but could not reach a general way. Even tried some graph implementation by introducing edges if they follow a particular sequence but could not reach solution.

  I'm currently working on some code for my Programming Languages course. I can't post the code but I'm permitted to talk about some high level concepts that I'm struggling with and receive input on them. Basically the code is a recursive DFS on a undirected graph that I'm supposed to convert to a concurrent program. My professor already specified that I should create my threads in the recursive DFS method and then join them in another method. Basically, I'm having trouble thinking of how I should keep track of the threads I'm creating so I can join all of them in the other method. I'm thinking an array of Threads but I'm unsure how to add each new thread to the array or even if that's the right direction.

• How do you revert a file to a revision within an integration in Perforce?

  I have two branches, let's call them mainline and dev1. I regularly integrate a file from mainline to dev1. The last-but-one time I integrated the file, it was at revision 3 in mainline. The last time, it was at revision 5. Now for mysterious reasons lost to the sands of time, I want to work in dev1 with revision 4 of the file from mainline. Is that possible? I can't integrate it across as P4V complains that all revisions have already been integrated. I've tried right-click-get this revision on the revision graph, but that only updates which version of the file I have in mainline, not in dev1.

  Hi all. I've some data that i'd like to publish just on one website, ie. it should not be reused on other websites. The data is a set of numbers that change every day, our journalists work to get hard gather it. Is there any way to hide, crypt, etc. the data in a way that it cannot be reused by others? But to show it in a graph in the same time? I found the ASCII to HEX tool that could be used for (http://utenti.multimania.it/ascii2hex/). I wonder if you can suggest other ways. • Oracle SQL: Multiple Subqueries Unioned Without Running Original Query Multiple Times.

  So I've got a very large database, and need to work on a subset ~1% of the data to dump into an excel spreadsheet to make a graph. Ideally, I could select out the subset of data and then run multiple select queries on that, which are then UNION'ed together. Is this even possible? I can't seem to find anyone else trying to do this and would improve the performance of my current query quite a bit. Right now I have something like this: SELECT ( SELECT ( SELECT( long list of requirements ) UNION SELECT( slightly different long list of requirements ) ) ) and it would be nice if i could group the commonalities of the two long requirements and have simple differences between the two select statements being unioned.

  I'm trying to essentially get something like this where I can see clear ripples at the base but otherwise it's like a Gaussian: This is kind of unsatisfactory because the ripples aren't very noticeable, it has a very gritty quality that obscures the image a bit, and if you move the graph so that it's just in 2D (so it looks like a circle) I'm not even sure if it's quite like how it should be (the concentric circles seem to be more evenly spaced in the real thing). I'm using the Google Collections Library which provides immutable versions of Map, List, and Set. My application model looks like a tree: Scene is a top-level object that contains a reference to a root Node. Each Node can contain child Nodes and Ports. An object graph might look like this: Scene | +-- Node | +-- Node | +- Port +-- Node | +- Port +- Port If all of these objects are immutable, controlled by a top-level SceneController object: What is the best way to construct this hierarchy? How would I replace an object that is arbitrarily deep in the object tree? Is there a way to support back-links, e.g. a Node having a "parent" attribute?

• How security of the systems might be improved using database procedures?

  The usage of Oracle PL/SQL procedures for controlling access to data often emphasized in PL/SQL books and other sources as being more secure approach. I'v seen several systems where all business logic related with data is performed through packages, procedures and functions, so application code becomes quite "dumb" and is only responsible for visualization part. I even heard some devs call such approaches and driving architects as database nazi :) because all logic code resides in database. I do know about DB procedure performance benefits, but now I'm interested in a "better security" when using thick client model. I assume such design mostly used when Oracle (and maybe MS SQL Server) databases are used. I do agree such approach improves security but only if there are not much users and every system user has a database account, so we might control and monitor data access through standard database user security. However, how such approach could increase the security for an average web system where thick clients are used: for example one database user with DML grants on all tables, and other users are handled using "users" and"user_rights" tables? We could use DB procedures, save usernames into context use that for filtering but vulnerability resides at the root - if the main database account is compromised than nothing will help. Of course in a real system we might consider at least several main users (for example frontend_db_user, backend_db_user).

• Statistics help on 3 choices

  I'm working on an Android app where, at one point, the user is asked to input whether something helped. Their options are 'Yes', 'No' and 'Don't Know'; or they could choose to ignore it. This is for multiple 'somethings' over a date range. A summary view for a date range shows the percentage of 'Yes', 'No' and 'Don't Know' entered for each 'something'. I'm also showing the 'Overall Effectiveness' as the percentage of 'Yes' inputs, which I realise is incorrect. I am thinking of changing that to 'Yes' minus 'No', but that doesn't address the 'Don't Know' inputs. How would I handle the data so that 'Overall Effectiveness' represents all 3 data inputs? So, for a 'something' which has a 'Yes' of 25%, a 'No' of 25% and a 'Don't Know' of 50%, would that be an 'Overall Effectiveness' of 0% ? Or would the 'Don't Know' affect that figure at all? As an additional to that, what graph type, other that Pie, would best display all 3 data?

  I have a project that need to draw a fast chart with many series. I must change start position of drawing to a favor position when user want. .Net Chart is slow in lots of series. When I plot the chart, I must invalidate the chart for updates, drawing speed will be too slow if there are too many series. I need at least 900 series in a chart for this project. I tested LightningChart control but it could not help me.

• Saving a modified object from ASP.NET MVC View Using Entity-Franework 4

  I retrieve an object graph from DB using EF4. The context is closed as soon as the data retrieve and the data passes to the controller, and then to the view. in the view the data is modified, and then the controller gets it back. From the controller I run Repository.Update(MyEmp); and in my repository the code goes: using (var context = new mydb()) { if (myEmp.ID != 0) // Checking if it's modified or new { context.Emp.Attach(MyEmp); int result = context.SaveChanges(); return myEmp.ID; } } The problem - once attached, the object entityState goes to unchanged, and not modified, and of course - nothing is saved to the database. What am I doing wrong ?

  I have an array where the order of the objects is important for when I finally output the array in a document. However, I'm also sorting the array in a function to find the highest value. • Some confusion with a class variable, but with a twist...

  I have a class called MyPackage.WebServer and it has a property called DBEngine. I am also dynamically loading a module and class using load_module. Inside this class, it attempts to reference MyPackage.WebServer. When it does though, DBEngine is not set to the value given when WebServer is instantiated. It's the default (None). Would the fact that I'm using load_module cause a different object graph to be created and thus isolate my dynamically loaded class from the rest of my python app?

• Proper chart scaling in Reporting Services 2005

  I'm developing a simple bar-chart in Reporting Services 2005 with a stored procedure as data-source. The values in this graph can be both positive and negative, and can span a very big range, and hence I cannot specify any non-dynamic scale that will work for all scenarios. The problem I'm facing is that the automatic scaling pretty much sucks. I get no line to show where the zero-point is, and the y-scale labels are from top to bottom: 8818 -191181 -391181 etc etc... So my question is, what is the best approach to make the scale more adapted to human reading? Is there any guide out there? Does reporting services 2008 handle this better? Also, moving away from Reporting Services is not really an option. I realize how to put values and expression in the max, min, and the gridline interval fields, although its more of a question what expressions I should put there.

  I would like to write a simple program in c++. After the program is done i would like to get my answers in form of a graph or picture that would give some certain information if i click on a certain area. i have only written console apllications in c++ before and don't really have a clue where to start with the graphic part of it all. Can I write the first part of the program in console mode and some how run it under the WIN32 later? for ex what will happen to the cout<<"foo"; commands?
