Do you have any good cubicle toys that help you to do any of: think about programming problems solve programming problems by representing common abstractions can be directly programmed can interface with a PC based IDE to be programmed. it may present problems that can be solved, to kick start problem solving. Disallowed items are: reference material in book, pamphlet, poster or cheat-sheet form, even if it has kick ass pop-cultural references. edibles. [discuss separately] things that need their own lab-space and/or extensive tools to be worked with. So yes, Lego Mindstorms come to mind, but they aren't cubicle toys because they cost more than cubicle toys would, and they have too many losable parts. comments on the answers so far: The 20 Questions game sounds quite neat as it could get you thinking; The bean balls could be used as tokens in a problem, so I can see that working. The magnetic toys like ball of whacks or the ball-and-stick ones present hands on fun of a structural nature... now can there be a similar hands on fun toy that aids in representing a solution to a problem? The Gui Mags clearly could, but they're quite utility oriented. The AVR Butterfly is less of a toy but definitely priced attractively, cheaper and more responsive than a basic stamp. I'm not going to pick an answer; there's several great suggestions here. Thank you.

• Flash video slooow in AIR 2 HTMLLoader component

  I am working on a full screen kiosk application in Flex 4/Air 2 using Flash Builder 4. We have a company training website which staff can access via the kiosk, and the main content is interactive flash training videos. Our target machines are by no means 'beefy', they are Atom n270s @ 1.6Ghz with 1Gb RAM. As it stands the videos are all but unusable when used from within the Air application, the application becomes completely unresponsive (100% cpu usage, click events take approx 5-10 seconds to register). So far I have tried: increasing the default frame rate from 24fps to 60. No improvement. nativeWindow.stage.frameRate = 60; running the videos in a stripped down version of my app, just a full screen HTMLLoader component pointed at the training website. No better than before. disabled hyper threading. The Atom CPU is split into two virtual cores, and the AIR app was only able to use one thread so maxed out at 50% CPU usage. Since the kiosk will only run the AIR app I am happy to loose hyper threading to increase the performance of the Air app. Marginal Improvement. The same website with the same videos is responsive if viewed in ie7 on the same machine, although Internet Explorer takes advantage of the CPU’s hyper threading. The flash videos are built with Adobe Captivate and from what I understand employee JavaScript to relay results back to the server. I will add more information about the video content asap as the training guru is back in the office later this week.

• Preventing Processes From Spawning Using .NET Code

  I remember coming across an article on I think CodeProject quite some time ago regarding an antivirus or antimalware some guy was writing where he hooked into the Windows API to be able to catch whenever a new process was started and was prompting he user before allowing the process to start. I can no longer find the article, and would actually like to be able to implement something like this. Currently, we have a custom browser built on Gecko that we've integrated access restrictions to sites based on our internal employee security levels, etc. We prevent any other browser from running with a timer and a call to Process.GetProcessesByName() from a list of the browsers we don't allow. What we want to accomplish is, instead of just blocking these browsers, where there is a small delay between the other browser starting and it being killed by our service, we'd like to be able to display a dialog instead of the process launching at all, explaining that the program isn't in the allowed list. This way, we can generate a list of "allowed" processes and just block everything else (we haven't yet had a problem with outside apps being installed, but you can never be too careful). Unfortunately, we don't do much Windows API programming from C#, so I'm not sure where to begin looking for what calls we need to hook. Even just a starting point of what to read up on would be helpful.

• Converting plain text in SQL to hyperlink in Access

  Hello, I've just started a new job my first since leaving University and as part of this my first task is to convert a wholly Access 2003 database to an Access front-end, SQL back-end. The Access database consists of a series of front end forms to add or review staff data, as part of this there is hyperlinks pointing to a photograph of the employee and there CV located on a shared drive. These were saved as hyperlinks within the Access DB. I have since converted the data in the Access DB to SQL and stored it in a database for me to test on, now as part of the data conversion the photo and CV locations were converted to nvarchar from hyperlink. I've done this using SSMA. My issue now is that I need to have these text links displayed and working as hyperlinks on the front end hidden behind the words "Photo" and "CV", but am unsure as to how to go about this, as in the past I've only ever used SQL and not Access. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated and if I've not been clear in any areas please feel free to ask questions and I'll try to clear anything up for you.

  I'm having one hell of a time trying to get my databinding to work correctly. I have reason to believe that what I'm trying to accomplish can't be done, but we'll see what answers I get. I've got a UserControl. This UserControl contains nothing more than a button. Now within the code behind, I've got a property name IsBookmarked. When IsBookmarked is set, code is run that animates the look of the button. The idea is that you click the button and it visually changes. We'll call this UserControl a Bookmark control. Now I have another control, which we'll call the FormControl. My FormControl contains a child Bookmark control. I've tried to do databinding on my Bookmark control, but it's not working.   I have googled but I can't find answers for these questions. Your advice is appreciated. centOS on vps with 512MB RAM, nginx, php5 (fastcgi), mysql5 (myisam, not innodb). I need to optimize this app created by some ex-employee. This app is working, but it's slow. Table: t1(id[bigint(20)],c1[mediumtext],c2[mediumtext],c3[mediumtext],c4[mediumtext]) id is some random big number, and is PK Those mediumtext rows look like this: c1="|box-002877|" c2="|ct-2348|rd-11124854|hw-3949|wd-8872|hw-119037736|...etc.. " c3="|fg-2448|wd-11172|hw-1656|...etc.. " c4="|hg-2448|qd-16667|...etc." (some columns contain a lot of data, around 900 KiB, database around 300 MiB) Yes, mediumtext "is bad", and (20) is too big... but I didn't create this. Those codes can be found on any of those 4 mediumtext's... //he needs all the columns of the row containing $code, so he wrote this: function f1($code) { SELECT * FROM t1 WHERE c1 LIKE '%$code%' OR c2 LIKE '%$code%' OR c3 LIKE '%$code%' OR c4 LIKE '%$code%'; Questions: Q1. • Sending solicited mass email

  Our company does work environment surveys, and these surveys are filled in online. All participants are sent a link to their survey in an email (personal code included). Some of our clients have employee counts in the hundreds and sometimes in the thousands. Our current solution is just using our SMTP-server to send this, without any form of throttling (VB6, CDO). (All recipients are usually "inside" the same domain, [email protected]) This is not a good solution, as you may imagine, this triggers every anti-spam/firewall/gatekeeper event in the clients environment. We are put in contact with their IT-department beforehand and get them to whitelist our sending server and sender-mail address. The most usual problems we run in to are: Receiving server only grabs the 20-50 first mails and rejects the rest (anti-spam measure). We sometimes can get by this by getting the it-company to whitelist us. Sometimes however, this does not work. It's getting more and more normal to disable bouncing of incorrect mail addresses. This gives us no indication of whether a mail has been delivered or not. And believe it or not, most clients gives us their email list from their HR-system, not their mailsystem. Does anyone have any suggestions for a better way to do this? We can't be the only company sending legitimate mass emails? :)

• Multiple user roles in Ruby on Rails

  I am building an inventory management application with four different user types: admin, employee, manufacturer, transporter. I haven't started coding yet, but this is what I'm thinking.. Manufacturers and transporters are related with has_many :through many-to-many association with products as follows: class Manufacturer < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :products has_many :transporters, :through => :products end class Product < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :manufacturer belongs_to :transporter end class Transporter < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :products has_many :manufacturers, :through => :products end All four user types will be able to login, but they will have different permissions and views, etc. I don't think I can put them in the same table (Users), however, because they will have different requirements, ie: vendors and manufacturers must have a billing address and contact info (through validations), but admins and employees should not have these fields. If possible, I would like to have a single login screen as opposed to 4 different screens. I'm not asking for the exact code to build this, but I'm having trouble determining the best way to make it happen. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

• How can I 'transpose' my data using SQL and remove duplicates at the same time?

  I have the following data structure in my database: LastName FirstName CourseName John Day Pricing John Day Marketing John Day Finance Lisa Smith Marketing Lisa Smith Finance etc... The data shows employess within a business and which courses they have shown a preference to attend. The number of courses per employee will vary (i.e. as above, John has 3 courses and Lisa 2). I need to take this data from the database and pass it to a webpage view (asp.net mvc). I would like the data that comes out of my database to match the view as much as possible and want to transform the data using SQl so that it looks like the following: LastName FirstName Course1 Course2 Course3 John Day Pricing Marketing Finance Lisa Smith Marketing Finance Any thoughts on how this may be achieved? Note: one of the reasons I am trying this approach is that the original data structure does not easily lend itself to be iterated over using the typical mvc syntax: <% foreach (var item in Model.courseData) { %> Because of the duplication of names in the orignal data I would end up with lots of conditionals in my View which I would like to avoid. I have tried transforming the data using c# in my ViewModel but have found it tough going and feel that I could lighten the workload by leveraging SQL before I return the data. Thanks.

  I'm new to Rails, and I'm having major trouble getting will_paginate to work with a nested resource. I have two models, Statement and Invoice. will_paginate is working on Statement, but I can't get it to work on Invoice. • Excel CSV into Nested Dictionary; List Comprehensions

  heya, I have a Excel CSV files with employee records in them. Something like this: mail,first_name,surname,employee_id,manager_id,telephone_number [email protected],john,smith,503422,503423,+65(2)3423-2433 [email protected],george,brown,503097,503098,+65(2)3423-9782 .... I'm using DictReader to put this into a nested dictionary: import csv gd_extract = csv.DictReader(open('filename 20100331 original.csv'), dialect='excel') employees = dict([(row['employee_id'], row) for row in gp_extract]) Is the above the proper way to do it - it does work, but is it the Right Way? Something more efficient? Also, the funny thing is, in IDLE, if I try to print out "employees" at the shell, it seems to cause IDLE to crash (there's approximately 1051 rows). 2. Remove employee_id from inner dict The second issue issue, I'm putting it into a dictionary indexed by employee_id, with the value as a nested dictionary of all the values - however, employee_id is also a key:value inside the nested dictionary, which is a bit redundant? Is there any way to exclude it from the inner dictionary? 3. Manipulate data in comprehension Thirdly, we need do some manipulations to the imported data - for example, all the phone numbers are in the wrong format, so we need to do some regex there. Also, we need to convert manager_id to an actual manager's name, and their email address. Most managers are in the same file, while others are in an external_contractors CSV, which is similar but not quite the same format - I can import that to a separate dict though. Are these two items things that can be done within the single list comprehension, or should I use a for loop? Or does multiple comprehensions work? (sample code would be really awesome here). Or is there a smarter way in Python do it? Cheers, Victor

  Hi, I have a dataset that has two datatables. In the first datatable I have EmpNo,EmpName and EmpAddress In the second datatable I have Empno,EmpJoindate, EmpSalary. I want a result where I should show EmpName as the label and his/her details in the gridview I populate a datalist with the first table, and have EmpNo as the datakeys. Then I populate the gridview inside the datatable which has EmpNo,EmpJoinDate and EmpAddress. My code is some what as below Datalist1.DataSource = dt; Datalist1.DataBind(); for (int i = 0; i < Datalist1.Items.Count; i++) { int EmpNo = Convert.ToInt32(Datalist1.DataKeys[i]); GridView gv = (GridView)Datalist1.FindControl("gv"); gv.DataSource = dt2; gv.DataBind(); } Now I have a problem, I have to bind the Details of the corresponding Employee to the gridview. Whereas the above code will display all the details of all employees in the gridview. If we use IEnumerable we give a condition where(a=a.eno=EmpNo), and bind that list to the gridview. How do I do this in datatable. kindly do not give me suggestions of altering the stored procedure which results the values in two tables, because that cannot be altered.   Im having a very strange problem, i have a complicated view that returns incorrect data when i query on a particular column. heres an example: select empname, has_garnishment from timecard_v2 where empname = 'Testerson, Testy'; this returns the single result 'Testerson, Testy', 'N' however, if i use the query: select empname, has_garnishment from timecard_v2 where empname = 'Testerson, Testy' and has_garnishment = 'Y'; this returns the single result 'Testerson, Testy', 'Y' The second query should return a subset of the first query, but it returns a different answer. I have dissected the view and determined that this section of the view definition is where the problem arises(Note, I removed all of the select clause except the parts of interests for clarity, in the full query all joined tables are required): SELECT e.fullname empname , NVL2(ded.has_garn, 'Y', 'N') has_garnishment FROM timecard tc , orderdetail od , orderassign oa , employee e , employee3 e3 , customer10 c10 , order_misc om, (SELECT COUNT(*) has_garn, v_ssn FROM deductions WHERE yymmdd_stop = 0 OR (LENGTH(yymmdd_stop) = 7 AND to_date(SUBSTR(yymmdd_stop, 2), 'YYMMDD') sysdate) GROUP BY v_ssn ) ded WHERE oa.lrn(+) = tc.lrn_order AND om.lrn(+) = od.lrn AND od.orderno = oa.orderno AND e.ssn = tc.ssn AND c10.custno = tc.custno AND e.lrn = e3.lrn AND e.ssn = ded.v_ssn(+) One thing of note about the definition of the 'ded' subquery. The v_ssn field is a virtual field on the deductions table. I am not a DBA im a software developer but we recently lost our DBA and the new one is still getting up to speed so im trying to debug this issue. • PDO Database Connections Problem

  Hey Everyone, Over a year ago I created my own database classes which use PDO, and handle all preparing, executing, and closing connections. These classes have been working great up until now. There are two different database severs I am grabbing from, MySQL, and MS SQL Express. I am retrieving an employee id from the MySQL server and using it to get that employees information from the MS SQL server. There are about 11k records coming from the MySQL server and my program is only making it through 1200 before crashing with an error like the following. Connection failed (odbc:Driver=FreeTDS;Servername=MSSQLExpress;Database=SMDINC) Class (PDOException) SQLSTATE[08001] SQLDriverConnect: 0 [unixODBC][FreeTDS][SQL Server]Unable to connect to data source It seems like the program is not able to connect to the data source, but it is running the exact same query about 30 times before this and having no problem. Also, I have thoroughly checked all of the data coming into the query and it all looks fine. I believe the issue may be that there are to many connections being created, but I have tried to close all connections in many different places, and nothing seems to be fixing the problem. Any debugging help, or suggestions would be appreciated! Craig Metrolis
