• Monitoring over Time with Nagios: How?

  Nagios in its standard usage monitors with point-in-time checks: either something is - or is not - true. Other tools like SGI's PCP, HP's MeasureWare, and SEC provide monitoring over time - monitoring things like average disk access time over the last five minutes, or other similar items. Is there anything like this for Nagios? I'm already running NDOUtils, which seems like a natural source for such data. I'd like to have something that would monitor and fire off alarms based on a time-based check using historical data. Is there anything like this for Nagios?

• How can I have 2 users working on the same PC at the same time

  I have a pc/machine that has its own ip address and it can be connected to by certain external PC's through our firewall. User A has a RDP connection from say Germany directly to the PC - his ip number is allowed through our firewall to connect to the PC. He now wants User B to connect at the same time so that User B can see what User A is doing on the screen at the same time and maybe take over the screen to put his input in. I know that you cannot have 2 RDP connections at the same time but what would be the easiest solution to this. I want User A to keep his RDP connection, but I am unsure of what to suggest so that User B can see what is going on at the same time. The Users are not happy to use Real VNC, etc.

  How can I limit the time spent on the computer or force a log out from a Windows 7 machine? I used to use Windows Steady State to limit users (kids) from being on too long but SteadyState does not work with Windows 7 Home Premium and is discontinued. Is there a way to set this up in Windows 7 where it will kick off a user after a set time? Or perhaps there's an alternative program that can help limit the time one user is at the computer.

• Scheduled Jobs during hours of autumn time change

  I'm wondering how other people deal with this scenario. What if you have a job scheduled to run at 1:30 am. In the autumn, when time changes, the hour of 1:00:00 to 1:59:59 repeats itself and so that job would run twice. Could be Windows Task Scheduler, SQL Agent or any other scheduling tool. Most of these tools seem to be based on machine time, not UTC time. If I told it to run the job at UTC time each night, then I wouldn't have the duplicate hour issue.

• Newly configured MSSQL2008, TIME_WAIT but no ESTABLISHED?

  Windows 2008 R2, standard. No firewall locally on it. Newly setup because an old SQL2000 had two disks die (or could it be the raid controller?) at the same time. Luckily, I had fresh backups. The databases have been restored, and SP2 for SQL2008 applied. I can see various hosts trying to establish a session, but the (customer) sites does not work and I don't see the expected established sessions. A wireshark reveals a full three-way handshake. Since it's customer machines connecting, I cannot logon to them and restart application pools.. What on earth could be causing this? • Need a recommendation for shared storage on auto-scaling ec2 w/ scalr

  I have come across so many answers to this question that I am completely lost! I am moving our 2 sites to a load balanced ec2 system with scalr as our cloud manager. Now the question is coming up about persistent storage for the user's uploaded content and other files. Could someone please give me a suggestion and possible a link to a tutorial for the following setup and goals. 2 websites (1 Forum, 1 ecommerce). 1 LB 1 App server (to scale out to as many as needed) 1 DB server (to scale out to as many as needed) Our sites will need to autoscale and according to what I am learning about scalr, that means as new instances load up, I need to run a script to set the basics up on that server (git,php mods, pull site from git, move keys, etc) What I don't understand is how should I handle user uploaded content like profile pictures, avatars, product images, themes, etc... Do I mount an EBS or s3fs folder to hold the websites (maybe /var/www/websitefolder) or do I do something like mount the avatar folders /var/www/websitefolder/images/avatars) I am not sure where to go with this. • Drupal 7: One-time user account

  I'm going to create a survey in Drupal 7 with the webform module, installed on a debian system which may be adapted in every way. The users (personally known, approx. 120) doing that survey will walk into a room and complete the survey in browsers on different computers. After that, they'll leave the room and other persons will enter, complete the survey on the same computers and so on. Each user may enter only one submission. The process needs to be anonymous, i. e. I mustn't have any idea of who did wich submission. My current solution is to generate random one-time-passwords and hand out one password per user (without noting who got which password). Within the survey there will be a password field where the one-time-password is entered. The value is checked by webform to be unique. I'll get the data via csv or Excel and verify the passwords manually in excel by comparing them to the list of valid passwords. The problem is: I don't like the idea of manually generating the password list, copying it to excel and doing a manual check. That's a good idea for one-time-use, but we're going to repeat the survey every once in a while. I'd rather generate one-time-logins (like user0001/fdlkjewf, user0002/dfrefnnr, ...) for each survey, hand them out to the users and let drupal/debian/whatever check whether a submission is valid or not. Do you have any idea how to batch-generate about 120 users with one-time-passwords in Drupal 7 and verify that each user may submit the form only once? Do you even have a better idea how to accomplish the task within the intranet? Thank you for your help.

  Hi, I'm not an expert in writing shell scripts but also I'm looking for a very specific solution. OS: CentOS release 5.2 (Final) I've a Java standalone which keeps writing (all System.out.println) to a log file. For some unknown reason, this Java standalone stops working at some point of time in my server and eventually logs writing also stops working. I want to have a script which checks the last modified date & time of the log file with current date & time in the server. If the time difference exceeds more than 5 minutes, I want to send an email immediately to my recipients list. This way I'll come to know when this Java standalone has stopped working. I'll move this script to crontab and make it run for every 1 minute, so that this whole process is automated. Log file location: /usr/local/logs/standalone.log

• SSH tunnel for socks5 proxy is slow with concurrent load

  I ssh to a remote AWS server using Ubuntu. I use ssh's port forwarding capabilities to do this. I have tried forwarding a dynamic port (ssh -D) or a single port (ssh -L with dante running as a remote socks server). Both are equally slow. I also tried different ciphers (ssh -c). Concurrent TCP connections pretty much do not work. For example, I can go to speedtest.net and start a test (which is fairly fast, probably maxes out my line speed) and if I try and do anything (i.e. load google.com) while the test is still running, all the additional connections seem to hang until the speed test is over. I realize OpenSSH is single-threaded. Is this the problem? It doesn't even show up on my top. Same goes for sshd on the remote server -- no processor hit. Is there anyway to bump ssh performance or should I step up to OpenVPN or something better suited for this?

• Firefox takes a really long time to load some sites on Ubuntu

  Hello guys, I have an issue here. Some sites - just a few - takes a really long time to load on Firefox. One example is A List Apart (http://www.alistapart.com/) which takes more than 30 minutes (yes, minutes, not seconds). On Opera, ou even through a telnet session, the problematic sites run without problem, fast as expected. I am using Linux 8.04, running Firefox 3.6.3 downloaded from mozilla site, with a 10M ADSL connection. I tried many tweaks I found googling, like disable IPv6, and change http pipelining settings on FF's about:config. None worked. I also used Firebug to find what phase during negotiation is the bottleneck. Findings are in the screenshot. Well guys, any idea what is the issue? And how to solve it? I repeat, this only happens with firefox (3.6.3 and prior versions), for a few sites only (even sites with much more requests, images, javascripts, stylesheets work fine), and http pipelines and IPv6 tweaks on about:config didn't work. • Syntax error on line 494 of httpd.conf: Cannot load .../php5apache2_2.dll into server

  I have been learning PHP. I had installed Apache-server (not in a combination-suite like USBWebserver). Now I'm trying to put my sites on a portable stick, using USBWebserver. I already used that program before to carry MySQL databases with me (and Apache worked as well, cause I used the included PHPMyAdmin for managing the databases.), but now it doesn't work anymore. When I start the program, I keep having the text saying Apache is offline. I've tried to open Apache using the command line (don't know what that would do, but, it's just a try). I got an error message saying Syntax error on line 494 of C:/.../httpd.conf: Cannot load C:/.../php5apache2_2.dll into server: (The following is translated from Dutch) An initialization routine of the dynamic link library (dll-file) has failed. Line 494 says this: LoadModule php5_module "C:/Users/School/Downloads/USBWebserver v8_en/php/php5apache2_2.dll" My first Apache installation (its service) is not running. The ports are different. And I also uninstalled the service (using the httpd.exe -k uninstall command); What can be the problem? Thanks for help.

• Screen occasionally flashes black when under load, sometimes does not recover

  I've built a brand new machine, but to my horror my monitor occasionally flashes black for around a second, then returning to normal. This happens under load (watching videos / playing games) but only sometimes; e.g. it doesn't occur in "Batman: Arkham City" but does in "XCOM: Enemy Unknown". When watching videos, it also occurs when not watching them full-screen, and it sometimes even occurs when the machine isn't doing anything, just sitting at the desktop and moving the mouse around. Has anyone ran into this problem and knows of any solution? Additionally, sometimes after the black screen, it won't return to normal, instead turning completely corrupt. In these cases even quitting the application doesn't help, but physically disconnecting and reconnecting the monitor fixes the problem. This problem did not occur on my earlier machine which used the same physical monitor. Additional details: Windows Server 2012, configured as Windows 8, with latest updates installed NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti, with latest driver installed Ample amounts of CPU and RAM for playing the above games and for watching videos. • "iostat" command different in two equal machines

  We have several machines on Amazon (ec2) of the type c1.xlarge with 8 cpus, running the Amazon AMI. Details on the machine: 7 GB of memory 20 EC2 Compute Units (8 virtual cores with 2.5 EC2 Compute Units each) 1690 GB of instance storage 64-bit platform I/O Performance: High API name: c1.xlarge One out of the several machines is showing a high load average, since we have run the last yum upgrade a couple of weeks a go. We did not yet update the other machines, and everything looks normal on them. The strange thing is that the top command not showing any hint for the cause of the load. CPUs are - 4.8%us, 1.1%sy, 0.0%ni, 94.1%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st. Mem is about 1.5GB free. • Will NTP work in an isolated network ( in absence of a reliable time source)

  Hi, I am investigatiing a typical NTP problem. The setup is as follows :- FreeBSD is being compiled and run on Opensolaris. The config file on OpenSolaris has entry of linux and another opensolaris machine as server and these server machines are syncing time with themselves (local clock) only. The server machines in this case have NTP running on them as well. Within a few minutes of starting the ntp daemon ,client starts syncing time with itself only and remains in that situation after that.All servers are discarded and no time syncing is done with them. My question is , is there any fundamental problem with this setup. Will the NTP work in such isloated network that has no direct or indirect connection with reliable internet time source ?

• Windows + Django + mod_wsgi = "DLL load failed"

  For a long time I was using Python 2.5 to do all this fine but recently upgraded to 2.7 since building stuff for 2.5 is a real pain. I also updated mod_wsgi to 3.3 for Python 2.7. Everything is working fine with Apache + mod_wsgi on CentOS and also in the Django runserver on both Windows and CentOS, but not with Apache + mod_wsgi on Windows. Whenever I try to access a page in my Django app I get the following (note that Apache starts fine): ImportError at / DLL load failed: The specified module could not be found. Which is caused by things like: from Crypto.Cipher import AES Etree and others cause the exact same error and it is not limited to any specific packages. Anything with pyd files fails. Googling around suggests reinstalling Python "for all users", but the installer doesn't give you that option anymore anyway. For good measure I've tried reinstalling Python 2.7 as an administrator and also told it to register itself as the default version of Python but neither helped. I think the solution might have something to do with: The fact that I have 2.5, 2.6 and 2.7 installed on this machine and mod_wsgi might be loading the DLLs for 2.5 instead of 2.7. Something to do with WSGIPythonPath, which I usually don't need to set.

• Using a time to set XY chart axis scaling like in 2003

  In Excel 2003, when you created a XY chart using time as an axis, you could set the scaling of these axes by typing in the date. In Excel 2007, you have to use the decimal version of the time (eg. How many days since some arbitrary earlier date). I was wondering if there was a way to avoid having to make such a calculation? A developer posted on a blog that this issue would be fixed in a future release, but all versions of Excel 2007 I have tried have not resolved this issue. The relevant quote: Those of you familiar with this technique of converting time to a decimal may recall that Excel 2003 allowed you to enter a date and time like “1/1/07 11:00 AM” directly in the axis option min/max fields and Excel would calculate the appropriate decimal representation. This currently does not work in Excel 2007 but will be fixed in a subsequent release.

• Windows 2003-R2-Server: Process "System" takes large chunks of CPU time

  I have a domain controller running 2003 R2. The server behaves very well when restarted daily, however, each day it is not restarted, there's a process called "System" that takes enourmous chunks of CPU time (up to 95%). The server supports AD, WINS, DNS, has Kaspersky Endpoint Security running, and manages backups via Arcserve 15. When I tried so far: Process Explorer (ex-Sysinternals) shows that the "System" process has no sub-processes. In the "Threads" tab of the detailled view I can see that 90% of the CPU time is used up by "ntkrnlpa.exe+0x803c0". The "Interrupts" process is running at 3-5% of CPU time, I'm not sure if this accounts for the amount of CPU time that System takes.

• How can I use HAproxy with SSL and get X-Forwarded-For headers AND tell PHP that SSL is in use?

  I have the following setup: (internet) ---> [ pfSense Box ] /-> [ Apache / PHP server ] [running HAproxy] --+--> [ Apache / PHP server ] +--> [ Apache / PHP server ] \-> [ Apache / PHP server ] For HTTP requests this works great, requests are distributed to my Apache servers just fine. For SSL requests, I had HAproxy distributing the requests using TCP load balancing, and it worked however since HAproxy didn't act as a proxy, it didn't add the X-Forwarded-For HTTP header, and the Apache / PHP servers didn't know the client's real IP address. So, I added stunnel in front of HAproxy, reading that stunnel could add the X-Forwarded-For HTTP header. However, the package which I could install into pfSense does not add this header... also, this apparently kills my ability to use KeepAlive requests, which I would really like to keep. But the biggest issue which killed that idea was that stunnel converted the HTTPS requests into plain HTTP requests, so PHP didn't know that SSL was enabled and tried to redirect to the SSL site. How can I use HAproxy to load balance across a number of SSL servers, allowing those servers to both know the client's IP address and know that SSL is in use? And if possible, how can I do it on my pfSense server? Or should I drop all this and just use nginx?

• How to fix GMail time stamps in Outlook?

  One of my email accounts is hosted at an ISP with unreliable IMAP support, and I can't change it. Fortunately, I have my personal email set up on Google Apps for Domains, so I created another GMail account there and turned on GMail's features that allow me to send and receive mail through the ISP account using GMail ("Send mail as" and "Get mail from other accounts" in GMail settings on the Accounts tab). I'm now using Outlook to retreive mail from the GMail account through IMAP, which in turn is retreiving mail from the ISP account through POP3. This basically works great, except for one very significant issue: Prior to setting this up, I already had several months of mail in the ISP account that I had been accessing via IMAP. GMail grabbed all of this mail via POP3 at, let's say, noon on April 5. In GMail's web interface (and on my iPod touch, and in Mozilla Thunderbird), all is well: the messages are all shown with their original time stamps. But when Outlook downloads these messages from GMail via IMAP, the time stamps are all set to noon on April 5 (the time GMail downloaded them from the ISP via POP3). That's not good, especially since we're talking about hundreds of messages here over a time span of several months. How can I fix this and get Outlook to display the original time stamps?

• Chrome will not load a web page with an <embed> element

It plays in IE, but not in Firefox or Chrome. My problem: Chrome reports "Could not load VLC Plugin". It seems to be a known problem that the VLC community don't necessarily feel like fixing at the moment, and is a result of Google choosing not to allow some certain kind of plugin. If I disable the plugin I no longer get the message but nothing happens when I click the button. Looking at the console in a debug window I see Uncaught TypeError: undefined is not a function Sound.html:7 PlaySound Sound.html:7 onclick which suggests Chrome could not find anything else to handle the sound file. How to I tell Chrome to use (e.g.) Windows Media Player? * UPDATE * This is apparently because the VLC plugin is a NPAPI plugin and Chrome no longer supports these. I have uninstalled VLC and this has removed the error on loading the webpage with an embedded sound element, but it still doesn't invoke WMP instead.
