• How to reduce fan noise with some latest Dell laptops, Desktop PC's?

  I have a few new Dell laptops and desktop PC's. Some of them have extremely noisy fans. The technicians who are sent by Dell refuse to attempt to fix things when they see that the OS is Ubuntu. They seem to be comfortable dealing with machines running MS Windows. For Linux, is there any way to slow or lower the fan speed? Please can anyone advise how it should be done. I have tried lm_sensors but failed.

• Missing feature in Hyper-V from Virtual PC

  One thing I really miss is the ability to create shared folder between host and guest.  Virtual PC does this well, you can create Shared Folder to be used every time, or just this one.  I have read some posts on how to do this.  Some people suggest using ISO Creator to package up the files and mount the image to DVD drive, but what I need is truly a "shared" environment, so I'm currently looking into creating Virtual switch and creating an internal network between the host and guest.  Let's see how that works out. I would have loved to give Virtual SAN Manager a try, but I don't have a local Fibre Channel to set one up.   Stack based virtual machines like CLR and JVM has different set of instructions. Is there any theory behind devising the instruction set while creating a virtual machine? e.g. there are JVM instruction sets to load constants from 0-5 onto the stack iconst_0 iconst_1 iconst_2 iconst_3 iconst_4 iconst_5 whereas in CLR there are instruction set to load number from 0 to 8 onto the stack as follows ldc.i4.0 ldc.i4.1 ldc.i4.2 ldc.i4.3 ldc.i4.4 ldc.i4.5 ldc.i4.6 ldc.i4.7 ldc.i4.8 why there is no ldc.i4.9 and if ldc.i4 is there why we need the above opcodes? And there are others like these. I am eager to know what is the reason behind this difference between opcodes of different VMs? Is there any specific theory to devise these opcodes or it is totally driven by the characteristics of the VM itself or depends on the high-level language constructs?

• Printing Problem on Shared Printer

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 on two machines. One has a USB printer connected. I want to share this printer with the other over the wireless network. Under Printing > Server > Settings: I have Publish shared printers connected to this system and Allow printing from the internet enabled. All other checkboxes are disabled. When I right click on the printer icon, I can see enabled and shared are ticked. On my other machine, I can now click on add network printer. It finds the machine name of the server and correctly identifies the printer. However, print test page fails. Under printer properties the printer state says: Processing - Unable to connect to printer; will retry in 30 seconds... What's gone wrong?

• How to simulate a USB plug?

  I have an app that implements some automations when an USB key is plugged. While developing, I have to test it in a specific environment (derivative from Debian Squeeze). The app subscribe to HAL events via DBUS. The problem is: my desk is on the third floor while my test machines are in the basement. I would really like to have a way to simulate a USB plug. usbip does not work on Ubuntu. I can't manage to use the g_mass_storage module on Ubuntu (I lack the dummy_hcd module) and in Debian. Maybe it is possible to simulate a dbus call? My work station is on Ubuntu 12.04.

  I cannot install Ubuntu 11.04 or 11.10 32 or 64 bit from CD or USB Drive on my machine. I tried to unplug all devices connected to USB, no changes the same thing: [ 15.383691] sd 7:0:0:3: [sdg] Attached SCSI removeable disk. And then the installation or Live image booting does nothing more... Its quite annoying that Ubuntu run on every of my Machines but not on my new PC :( What can I do to get that running? Edit: Fascinating thing I found out, is that the 10.04 LTS seems to work in every way. Why does 11.04 or 11.10 does not... Maybe theres a Bug in the installer ?

  I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 using bootable USB. After upgrade, all non-default packages from 11.10 are gone. For ex, I did not have Chromium, Eclipse etc. Although, I could see these in the History in the "Ubuntu Software Center". Is there any way I can retrieve all these packages (even reverting back to 11.10 is also fine with me)? What could be a possible reason for this (We plan to upgrade a few more machines)? • What is the history of why bytes are eight bits?

  What where the historical forces at work, the tradeoffs to make, in deciding to use groups of eight bits as the fundamental unit ? There were machines, once upon a time, using other word sizes, but today for non-eight-bitness you must look to museum pieces, specialized chips for embedded applications, and DSPs. How did the byte evolve out of the chaos and creativity of the early days of computer design? I can imagine that fewer bits would be ineffective for handling enough data to make computing feasible, while too many would have lead to expensive hardware. Were other influences in play? Why did these forces balance out to eight bits? (BTW, if I could time travel, I'd go back to when the "byte" was declared to be 8 bits, and convince everyone to make it 12 bits, bribing them with some early 21st Century trinkets.)

• Basic memcached question

  I have been reading up on distributed hashing. I learnt that consistent hashing is used for distributing the keys among cache machines. I also learnt that, a key is duplicated on mutiple caches to handle failure of cache hosts. But what I have come across on memcached doesn't seem to be in alignment with all this. I read that all cache nodes are independent of each other and that if a cache goes down, requests go to DB. Theres no mention of cache miss on a host resulting in the host directing the request to another host which could either be holding the key or is nearer to the key. Can you please tell me how these two fit together? Is memcached a very preliminary form of distributed hashing which doesnt have much sophistication?

• Why is "sudo virsh" hanging in the console?

  I wanted to experiment with OpenStack on my iMac: So I installed Ubuntu Cloud Live Image on a VM and I also ran DevStack on a fresh Ubuntu 64-bit Server VM. The DevStack script hangs on the following line: instances=`sudo virsh list --all | grep $INSTANCE_NAME_PREFIX | sed "s/.*\($INSTANCE_NAME_PREFIX[0-9a-fA-F]*\).*/\1/g"` I commented that block and ran the script again, this time it did not hang; thus completing its run. I attempted to run sudo virsh list --all on my CloudLive VM and it just hands until I break out of it. Why is sudo virsh hanging? Your help is appreciated. Note 1: The virsh command responds without sudo. Note 2: Not sure it matters, but I'm running my Virtual Machines in VMWare Fusion.

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 13.04 on a Dell Mini 10 that is currently running Qimo. I want to replace the old operating system entirely. When I turn on the computer and boot from the USB stick it brings up a black screen that says: Boot: I have no idea where to go from here. I created the bootable USB stick using Universal USB installer. I've used the same process for installing Ubuntu on other machines in the past have never had this issue.   Our site currently is going to require our users to download a player to view videos they will want to view on our site. The videos get uploaded by users from various sources (smartphones in 3gp format for example). However most people have Flash on their machines. I am trying to 'make a gentle stand' and tell the team that requiring a download of a video player is not acceptable. My thinking is this: instead of allowing people to upload 3gp and other formats then re-serving the exact format on REQUESTs from our site's users we will instead use a video converter such as FFMpeg to convert every uploaded video to FLV for viewing on flash. so when a user requests to view one of the videos on our site -- boom they probably already have Flash installed so we just play the video in their Flash player. I feel serving up FLV flash video is best. Does it ring true that requiring, say, a 3gp player download just to view a video is the wrong approach?

• Ubuntu 12.04 on MBPro, Early 2011, options

  I have a 2.2 GHz i7, 4GB MacBook Pro 8.3, AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB, Early 2011. As far as I see I have two options, running Ubuntu on this hardware: VMWare/Virtualbox and Ubuntu in a VM, I already ordered a 16G RAM upgrade for this. Wipe OSX and go Ubuntu native, with 16G RAM, yay ! I'm kinda leaning towards option 2 as I tend to spend 90% of my time in dev VM's at work anyway. All my other machines at home, and most at work are Ubuntu/Linux as well. I have a Mac mini on standby for the odd Itunes backup/sync. If I don't have to keep OSX around, I would like to get rid of it altogether. Ubuntu support on Mac hardware seems to be a hit and miss affair as far as I can tell. Does anyone have good success running a recent version of Ubuntu on this hardware ? Thanks

• How do I output my audio input?

  A few iterations ago, I think this was Jaunty but could've been before, I would plug a 1/8" audio cable from the line-out of a Windows netbook to the line-in of my Ubuntu machine, so I would have all the sound from both machines without having to plug both into a mixer which I don't have. I didn't do this much, as I was pretty-much happy with Banshee at the time. But with Karmic, and still with Lucid, I can only get the output if I'm recording with Audacity. Which I'm not going to do from my web-development and systems programming workstation. I can tell by plugging in headphones that my netbook has audio out working. I can see Sound Preferences that the Ubuntu machine is receiving them. I just want the old behavior back. Help?

• How to limit concurrent file access on a Samba share?

  I have a Ubuntu 12.04 file server running Samba. There are 6 windows machines that access the server, as well as two people that will occasionally access files remotely. The problem that I am having is that the CAD/CAM software we are using doesn't seem to request file locks, meaning if two people open a file at the same time, the first person to close the file will get their changes overwritten if the second person saves the file. I tried changing the smb.conf to strict locking = yes but this doesn't seem to have any effect. File locking with excel seems to work fine, so I know that Samba is using the file locks...if they were put on the file in the first place. Is there a way (either in Samba or Ubuntu) to only allow one user to have a file open at a time? If not does anyone have any suggestions for managing a problem like this?

• Sharing between new install and Windows 7 boxes not working, either direction. Printers & folders

  I don't seem to be able to share between my Ubuntu (fresh install) and any of my Windows machines. I tried using this guide: How to Share Folders in Ubuntu & Access them from Windows 7. The problems is that I cannot see the Ubuntu machine in my network pane on the Windows machine. Any Ideas of what I should check? Ultimately what I am looking to do is make mobile media server that I can put in the Van, attach a WiFi router, and stream to an iPad, tablet, laptop, etc. Any advice on setting this up would be appreciated.
