• Installing multi-boot Linux system

  I have a dual (XP/Linux) boot Compaq Presario S4500UK with a couple of spare partitions on the boot drive which I want to use for testing different Linux distros/configs before installing them on "live" machines. I tried this with Oneiric which worked fine until I came to uninstalling the test system. Fortunately Oneiric uses Grub2 and so redirecting the bootloader to work from the original Linux partition was a piece of cake - if a bit annoying. I now need to do some tests on Hardy and DSL (Damned Small Linux), neither of which use Grub2. Question: Is it possible to install a test operating system without adding/replacing the bootloader (ie so I can still use Grub2 from the original partition with its nice interface and recovery facilities)? Is there another way of uninstalling/decommisioning a test OS which doesn't trash the boot loader? (The only way I know to do this is by deleting/reformatting the partition which takes with it the bootloader which is in that partition). Any help would be much appreciated. Tks jg1

  Our site currently is going to require our users to download a player to view videos they will want to view on our site. The videos get uploaded by users from various sources (smartphones in 3gp format for example). However most people have Flash on their machines. I am trying to 'make a gentle stand' and tell the team that requiring a download of a video player is not acceptable. My thinking is this: instead of allowing people to upload 3gp and other formats then re-serving the exact format on REQUESTs from our site's users we will instead use a video converter such as FFMpeg to convert every uploaded video to FLV for viewing on flash. so when a user requests to view one of the videos on our site -- boom they probably already have Flash installed so we just play the video in their Flash player. I feel serving up FLV flash video is best. Does it ring true that requiring, say, a 3gp player download just to view a video is the wrong approach?

• How do I access an external hard drive plugged into my router?

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 and I own a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Router with a USB port built into it. Naturally, the router came with instructions on how to mount and view this drive with both Windows and Mac, but nothing about Linux. I have an WD Elements 1 TB external HDD that I would like to plug into the router and share across my home network. However, when I plug it in, absolutely nothing happens on my desktop. I checked on two different machines and nothing seems to indicate that the drive has been mounted (or is even seen at all) on either machine. I am fully aware that it may not be possible to do this with a Linux system, but I was hoping someone might have a suggestion. Thanks!

Therefore, I am looking for information on what is useful to check before starting the game. As a simple example, Why check for a specific amount of memory? Should I as a game developer ensure a minimum amount of memory? I feel this information is usually skipped in many books and resources but is critical to be able to deliver a game that will run on many machines.   I have been looking around a little bit, but most of the discussions are about problems with already existing systems (particular graphics card and setup etc.). I would like to ask what would be the best option for me if I want to build powerful desktop with triple monitor setup. I have one Dell UltraSharp U2713HM (27 inches, 2560x1440) and I was thinking about getting two more. Would it be possible to have those three working with ubuntu (kubuntu) on any graphics card out there today? What is the best option if it comes to choosing particular model? • Ubuntu 12.04 Server monitor goes into sleep mode (no display) after fresh install

  For some reason I can boot and either use Ubuntu 12.04 server edition, or desktop version. I can live boot the disk, I can go through the installer, or even use the ubuntu alternate installer. But for some reason after the install completes and I reboot the monitor seems to go back into sleep mode and then never loads the command prompt. This is on an industrial adlink MXE-1300 PC. I've installed ubuntu server fine on other models of adlink machines but this one doesn't want to seem to play nice. To me it seems like if it was a video card issue than I could never even load the installer or run ubuntu in live mode. Any thoughts or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

  There is a coworker who has stolen credit for my work. I created a system that will show live statuses of printing machines throughout the plant. There was one glitch in it so the coworker made an improvement and then re-wrote the entire system (copying 90% of my code, yet he added a new piece of hardware then took over the project). Now he asks me programming questions from time to time. I don't mind teaching coworkers how to program, but since he has stolen my ideas and credit in the past I am reluctant to teach him all I know. Today he asks me for a particularly challenging algorithm for this system. His code now looks exactly like the way I would program! How would you handle the situation?   I downloaded Ubuntu 12.04, then using the tool Startup Disk Creator i made the live usb. I checked that it's bootable Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 62 15635593 7817766 c W95 FAT32 (LBA) Now on my lap top it boots nicely, but on two other machines that don't have any installation of ubuntu(no Grub) it doesn't boot. I changed the booting order so that USB is before HDD. So i think i did everything i know, but no luck. How can i use this USB drive on other devices that don't have any previous ubuntu installation.

  I work on a team of three - five developers that work on an ASP.net web application remotely. We currently run a full local database from a recent backup on all of our machines during development. The current backup, compressed, is about 18 GB. I'm looking to see if there's an easier way to keep all of our local copies relatively fresh without each of us individually downloading the 18 GB file over HTTP from our web server on a regular basis. I guess FTP is an option, but it won't speed the process up at all. I'm familiar with torrents and the thought keeps hitting me that something like that would be effective, but I'm unsure of the security or the process.

  If I remember correctly, clicking on the application in launcher started the application if it was not already open and focused on the application if it was already open. Previously, I had to middle click to start another instance. But, recently, whenever I click in the launcher, a new application window is started, irrespective of whether one is already open or not. What should I do? A bug? Or a new feature? I am using 12.04 LTS and 12.10 in two machines. Both fully updated. Both are showing the same behaviour.

  When I want to work on my local Linux machines from windows, I use Putty+Xming and I set the Xming port in Putty connection settings. This way I have a terminal on the machine and if, for example, I run the command 'firefox' a firefox window is opened in Windows (while it is really running on the Linux machine). I want to do the same thing from other Linux machine (they are both Ubuntu machine) connect by SSH and become this connection X Server so any graphic component will be opened on local machine. How can I do that?

• Desktop empty under Ubuntu 12.04

  My problem is that my desktop is empty -- there are no files or directories in it. The launcher on the left and the menu at the top are both ok. But, after a recent upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10, everything in my Desktop was emptied. I do have files in my ~/Desktop directory, which is what I want displayed. In ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs, I also have XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop/". Is there something else I should be looking for? I actually have another Ubuntu machine and I don't have the same problem there after upgrading. So, I don't think this is a bug with 12.10 but just some setting (a package, etc.) that was set in one machine but not the other. Oh, I am not sure if this is related to nautilus, but the two machines have the same nautilus-related packages installed... Any help would be appreciated!

  I am looking for a functional language that is basically dynamic programming - i.e. one where functions are first-class objects - but where all function calls are asynchronous by default; i.e. you define function X(a,b) = (Y(a)+Z(b)), and when X() is called, it sees it is waiting for the return from two functions, runs one in the current thread, and spawns a new thread to run the other. The future is very much parallel processing; multiple cores, multiple machines, the internet of things, etc. and I was wondering if there was a language specifically designed to make this kind of parallelization easy. I currently have only used imperative languages (c, php, java, ruby, etc), so I don't know anything about what kind of functional languages are available.

  If you are getting a message when you start the Compute Emulator “Systray already running…” from within Visual Studio one fix is to check what the image name is loading is. For some reason, on 2 of my machines the image was loading with the 8.3 format.  This caused the logic in the VS tools to not find the process.  So, to fix, I just did a little copy/rename magic. C:\Program Files\Windows Azure SDK\v1.3\bin>copy csmonitor.exe csmonitor-a.exe 1 file(s) copied. C:\Program Files\Windows Azure SDK\v1.3\bin>del csmonitor.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Azure SDK\v1.3\bin>copy csmonitor-a.exe csmonitor.exe 1 file(s) copied. If you bring up task manager and see something like CSMON~1.EXE in the Image Name column, you probably have this issue.

• ssh client times out to some servers, works on others

  I have a strange problem and I'm not sure where to begin. My ssh client works on some servers but times out on others. Obviously, I checked that the servers are accessible via ssh from other locations. From my machine A I can log on to C only by logging on to B first. There are at least two servers for which this is the case. To make matters more strange sudo ufw status - Status: inactive nmap -sT -p 22 <problem_server> - ...22/tcp open ssh... On one affected server I am getting: ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host and on the other I am getting ssh: connect to host <problem_server> port 22: Connection timed out With both of these servers I can log in from other machines. How can I troubleshoot such a problem?
