• Possible automated Bing Ads fraud?

  I run a website that generates life insurance leads. The site is very simple a) there is a form for capturing the user's details, life insurance requirements etc b) A quote comparison feature We drive traffic to our site using conventional Google Adwords and Bing Ads campaigns. Since the 6th January we have received 30-40 dodgy leads which have the following in common: All created between 2 and 8 AM Phone number always in the format "123 1234 1234' Name, Date Of Birth, Policy details, Address all seem valid and are unique across the leads Email addresses from "disposable" email accounts including dodgit.com, mailinator.com, trashymail.com, pookmail.com Some leads come from the customer form, some via the quote comparison feature All come from different IP addresses We get the keyword information passed through from the URLs All look to be coming from Bing Ads All come from Internet Explorer v7 and v8 The consistency of the data and the random IP addresses seem to suggest an automated approach but I'm not sure of the intent. We can handle identifying these leads within our database but is there anyway of stopping this at the Ad level i.e. before the click through.

• The overlooked OUTPUT clause

  I often find myself applying ad-hoc data updates to production systems – usually running scripts written by other people. One of my favourite features of SQL syntax is the OUTPUT clause – I find this is rarely used, and I often wonder if this is due to a lack of awareness of this feature.. The OUTPUT clause was added to SQL Server in the SQL 2005 release – so has been around for quite a while now, yet I often see scripts like this… SELECT somevalue FROM sometable WHERE keyval = XXX UPDATE sometable SET somevalue = newvalue WHERE keyval = XXX -- now check the update has worked… SELECT somevalue FROM sometable WHERE keyval = XXX This can be rewritten to achieve the same end-result using the OUTPUT clause. UPDATE sometable SET somevalue = newvalue OUTPUT deleted.somevalue AS ‘old value’,              inserted.somevalue AS ‘new value’ WHERE keyval = XXX The Update statement with output clause also requires less IO - ie I've replaced three SQL Statements with one, using only a third of the IO.  If you are not aware of the power of the output clause – I recommend you look at the output clause in books online And finally here’s an example of the output produced using the Northwind database…

  The Commandos series of games and its similar western counterpart, Desperados, use a mix of 2D and 3D elements to achieve a very pleasing and immersive atmosphere. Apart from the concept that alone made the series a best-seller, the graphics eye-candy was also a much appreciated asset of that game. I was very curious on what was the technique used to model and adorn the realistic terrains in those titles? Below are some screenshots that could be relevant as a reference for whomever has a candidate answer: The tiny details and patternless distribution of ornamental textures make me think that these terrains were not generated using a standard heightmap-blendmap method.

• Why do the interfaces show ipv6 address along with ipv4

  I have manually specified only ipv4 address for my interfaces. But all the interfaces automatically show inet6 address as well. Does it mean that ubuntu starts an ipv6 tunnel by default. If it does, isn't it dangerous, as ipv6 assigns public ips for all LAN clients. I only have a firewall on my NAT router, and my clients, who's interfaces show ipv6 address, do not have firewalls.   Considering the PCWorld review that came out in March: Free Android Apps Packed with Ads are Major Battery Drains ...Researchers from Purdue University in collaboration with Microsoft claim that third-party advertising in free smartphone apps can be responsible for as much as 65 percent to 75 percent of an app's energy consumption... Is there a best practice for integrating advert support into mobile applications, so as to not drain user battery too much? ...When you fire up Angry Birds on your Android phone, the researchers found that the core gaming component only consumes about 18 percent of total app energy. The biggest battery suck comes from the software powering third-party ads and analytics accounting for 45 percent of total app energy, according to the study... Has anyone invoked better ways of keeping away from the "3G Tail", as the report puts it? Is it better/possible to download a large set of adverts that are cached for a few hours, and using them to populate your ad space, to avoid constant use of the Wi-Fi/3G radios? Are there any best practices for the inclusion of adverts in mobile apps?

  I am trying to update my graphics driver by running: sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel But I keep getting this message: Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: xserver-xorg-video-intel : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. When I run: sudo apt-get install -f Nothing happens, because the program doesn't even get half way to installing. I am running Lubuntu 12.04 on a HP Mini 110 netbook. I have tried changing to several different ppa's but that doesn't work. I want to update my driver so that my mouse stops flickering and ScummVM stops flickering every minute.

• What is the situation about OpenGL under Ubuntu Unity and Gnome3?

  In a GNU/linux distribution is usually installed Xorg as main graphical server, it operates with a client-server logic, a special windows is designate as desktop environment and this special windows can handle all the eyecandy stuff like decorations, icons and effects. The problem is that the latest UI heavily relies on hardware acceleration, Unity is an overlay on Compiz and the Gnome-shell also require an active driver for the GPU to work well: the problem is: on the same OS I can find multiple implementations of OpenGL who is handling my OpenGL buffer? how the OpenGL buffer is managed compared to the other windows? how can I be sure that my OpenGL implementation is glued to the hardware and is not related to the client-server logic of Xorg? For example I have tried the clutter library and I have only experienced problems under both Unity and GTK/Gnome, no problem under other OS.

• On Golf Tournaments & Installers

  I've been in touch recently with Ann Maybury, who is creating a golf tournament roundrobin manager for senior citizens in Palm Desert, California. The application is created on the NetBeans Platform and looks as follows, very neat and professional: Ann has been working on wrapping up the application for distribution and needs to include the JRE, since end users of the application don't necessarily have the JRE installed when they install the application. Several blogs and articles are available for creating and customizing installers for NetBeans Platform applications, as well as for bundling the JRE and other resources, though there are some gaps and inccuracies in those documents. However, now there's a new official tutorial, for the first time: http://platform.netbeans.org/tutorials/nbm-nbi.html The above is focused on Ant builds and Windows, specifically, and doesn't cover Maven scenarios, for which there'll be a separate tutorial soon. • How to explain that writing universally cross-platform C++ code and shipping products for all OSes is not that easy?

  Our company ships a range of desktop products for Windows and lots of Linux users complain on forums that we should have been written versions of our products for Linux years ago and the reason why we don't do that is we're a greedy corporation all our technical specialists are underqualified idiots Our average product is something like 3 million lines of C++ code. My and my colleagues analysis is the following: writing cross-platform C++ code is not that easy preparing a lot of distribution packages and maintaining them for all widespread versions of Linux takes time our estimate is that Linux market is something like 5-15% of all users and those users will likely not want to pay for our effort when this is brought up the response is again that we're greedy underqualified idiots and that when everything is done right all this is easy and painless. How reasonable are our evaluations of the fact that writing cross-platform code and maintaining numerous ditribution packages takes lots of effort? Where can we find some easy yet detailed analysis with real life stories that show beyond the shadow of a doubt what amount of effort exactly it takes?

Mais il y a loin de la coupe aux lèvres. Et si j'ai pu télécharger l'environnement et le compiler pour me faire ma propre distribution binaire, cela ne fait certainement pas de moi un développeur digne d'intégrer une communauté constituée de membres solides. Ceux-là n'ont pas à se perdre avec de nouveaux arrivants, néophytes, qui adopteraient par leur méconnaissance des comportements brutaux. C'est bien ce que je veux éviter. • Can I minify Javascript that requires copyright notice?

  I guess this is actually a legal question, but it relates to software. I'm about to include a JS plugin in a project. The comments include: Redistributions of source code must retain the above copyright notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer. * Redistributions in binary form must reproduce the above copyright notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer in the documentation and/or other materials provided with the distribution. Is using this in my web site "redistribution?" If I minify this to conserve bandwidth, I assume it will strip all comments. If the answer to #1 is yes, doesn't that imply I'm legally not allowed to minify it? (That would stink, since I was planning to auto-minify all JS as part of the deploy process.)

  We have a landing page which is used only for running an ad campaign. There is a website that has found this link somehow and is linking to it. I've been told by marketing they don't want that website linking to the landing page. How can I prevent a specific website from linking to our domain? I don't want to block all websites from linking to it, just this specific one. Is there solution something to do with .htaccess? If so, please provide an example of doing this or a link to example because I've been unable to find one.

  I'm a developer negotiating compensation for a commercialized version of some data analysis software I wrote (see my profile if you like). This is a completely new experience for me. I want per-unit royalties, but I don't have the slightest idea what the standard amount is. I also want to be compensated for my time, so that's an upfront R&D cost for the company I'm negotiating with, but distribution cost to them is presumably virtually nothing once it's out there. But then there's support costs. What sorts of deals have you folks negotiated?

• Choosing a mobile advertising mediator over going it alone

  We have finished our first game for IOS/Android. We would like to give it away adding ads to it. I have been reading a lot about the subject but it is a bit overwhelming for starters. From what I read, it seems there are some important points to have into consideration: 1) Do as much localization as you can (target your audience with ads they could be interested for the zone they live in). 2) Do not over advertise in your application. At this moment we have decided to go with AdMob. It seems an easy option to setup for beginners and have a good set of ad networks. My question is, will we earn less for example for iAds using adMob than implementing iAds without a mediator? Are adMob paying less than others (this is what I remember for some artilces I read)?. It would be nice to hear from people with experience on this to let us light our way a bit.
