  • Lock Pages in Memory - not deprecated in Denali

    Please note an error in the SQL 2012 documentation for Lock Pages in Memory which indicates that it's deprecated. It's not. Locking pages in memory is a useful feature and there are no plans to deprecate it. It looks like it was accidently included on this page when we made changes to deprecate AWE.   • Profiling and containing memory per system

    I have been interesting in profiling and keeping a managed memory pool for each subsystem, so I could get statistic on how much memory was being used in something such as sounds or graphics. However, what is the best design for doing this? I was thinking of using multiple allocators and just using one per subsystem, however, that would result in global variables for my allocators (or so it would seem to me). Another approach I have seen/been suggested is to just overload new and pass in an allocator for a parameter. I had a similar question over on stackoverflow here with a bounty, however, it seems as if perhaps I was too vague or just there is not enough people with knowledge in the subject.

  • 3G dongle and memory card detection

    My questions is about 3G dongle (Huawei E1752) that I use for my internet on Ubuntu 12.04. The big issue is that ubuntu only recognise the dongle if I plug it in before booting up. But if somehow I loses connection (due to network being low) then the only way to use the 3G dongle again is to reboot my machine, which becomes a pain. I have the same issue with the memory card reader of my laptop whereby it only reads when I insert the card before booting up. My laptop is an Acer V3 -571g. At first I thought it was an issue that the model was quite new, but I have been updating my ubuntu for a while, and this issue has kept being the same

  • Laptop freezes and seems to crash, but continues working after waiting for a few minutes [closed]

    I've had this old notebook laying around and because i was missing a second machine (My wife usually steals the first ;) ) I considered installing Linux. As a php developer I work with Linux servers (usually fedora) on a daily basis and because its an older machine that I want to use for development, linux seemed the best option. Speedwise I expected a good experience, better than Windows 7 on the same machine. The results where terrible. I tried ubuntu 12.04. The shell never got past showing the background. The system doesn't freeze since the mouse still works and I can use ctrl+alt+f2 etc to enter terminal mode. I expected hardware problems en even exchanged the harddisk en Ram memory. No luck though, so I started over and tried 11.10 Same results so I tried 10.04.4 which did install properly. Not sure if unity was the problem, but it seems likely. But then I tried simply things like surfing on the net, the system frooze and I thought it crashed so after a few minutes I pulled the plug and rebooted. But it happened again and I waited. After a few minutes the system came back to life like nothing happened. Long story short. Besides the fact that the entire interface is very sluggish, any and all graphical functions freezes the system. The more elaborate the animation would be, the longer it freezes. I switch chromium from window to fullscreenmode and had to wait 15 minutes to continue. I don't see the animation that's probably supposed to be in between. It just freezes and then after unfreezing its fullscreen. I don't think its a bug. I suspect the problem is with my graphics card. Like I said, its and old system. So old that I can't even find the original Ati drivers anywere. (I'll post the details of my system at the end of my post) I'm at a loss as to what to do next. I tried other Distro's. So far only dreamlinux works normally. Linux Mint won't start as a live CD. I think I simply need a driver update but I can't find them anywhere. Does anyone have the same experience ? " Why to use: document.body.foo = 52; can result a memory leak -or in what conditions- so that I should use jQuery.data(document.body, 'foo', 52); Should I ALWAYS prefer .data() instead of using expandos in any case?   • Is there a way that I can force mod_perl to re-use buffer memory?

    Hi, I have a Perl script running in mod_perl that needs to write a large amount of data to the client, possibly over a long period. The behavior that I observe is that once I print and flush something, the buffer memory is not reclaimed even though I rflush (I know this can't be reclaimed back by the OS). Is that how mod_perl operates and is there a way that I can force it to periodically free the buffer memory, so that I can use that for new buffers instead of taking more from the OS?

    I understand the purpose of the NULL constant in C/C++, and I understand that it needs to be represented some way internally. My question is: Is there some fundamental reason why the 0-address would be an invalid memory-location for an object in C/C++? Or are we in theory "wasting" one byte of memory due to this reservation?

    I am conducting stress tests on my database, which is hosted on SQL Server 2008 64-bit running on a 64-bit machine with 10 GB of RAM. I have 400 threads. Each thread queries the database every second, but the query time does not take time, as the SQL profiler says that, but after 18 hours SQL Server uses up 7.2 GB of RAM and 7.2 GB of virtual memory. Is this normal behavior? How can I adjust SQL Server to clean up unused memory?

    I've been trying to get HDMI with sound working for the last few days, and I'm a little bit out of ideas.   • App Pool doesn't respect memory limits

    I am dealing with a legacy .NET app that has a memory leak. In order to try and mitigate a run away memory situation, I've set the app pool memory limits from anywhere between 500KB to 500000KB (500MB) however the app pool doesn't seem to respect the settings as I can login and view the physical memory for it (5GB and above no matter what values). This app is killing the server and I can't seem to determine how to adjust the app pool. What settings do you recommend in order to ensure this app pool doesn't exceed around 500mb of memory.   • How is memory allocated in ESXi server?

    We have an ESXi 4.1 server with 48 GB RAM. For each VM, we are allocating 4GB of memory. Since the server will have 13 virtual machines, my manager thinks this is wrong. I am going to explain to them that ESXi will actually manage memory itself, but they asked me how much memory I allocated for the ESXi server itself. I did not allocate any (I have not even heard of an option for allocating memory for the ESXi server itself). How is memory allocated for ESXi server? How does it over-allocate/distribute RAM among virtual machines without issue?

  • SQL Server 2005 64bit on 16GB machine uses 3.6GB memory only

    Maximum server memory is set to the maxvalue AWE is disabled (should not be needed in 64 bit anyway) Windows Server 2008 Enterprise SP2 It is a virtual server using VMWare If I look in Task Manager the sqlservr.exe process only uses about 3.6 GB of memory. Is that number not real? Shouldn't it attempt to use all available memory? If I run DBCC MEMORYSTATUS I get: VM Reserved 16670136 VM Committed 3640664 It looks like a memory limit I shouldn't be seeing in a 64 bit environment.. how can I get SQL2005 to use more memory?
