  I just ran the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware quick scan for the first time and it found: Registry Data Items Infected: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Start_ShowSearch (Hijack.StartMenu) - Bad: (0) Good: (1) - No action taken. I just wanted to double check (and provide a top Google result for people in the future that might have the same issue) that this was a false positive and can be safely right-click ignored.

  I would like to monitor the ram of two linux systems (Ubuntu and Red Hat). I realize I can run memtest86 from boot to diagnose bad ram. But are there are any solutions to monitor ram while the system is still running. I'm sort of thinking a daemon that writes and reads back from random unused memory. Anybody seen something like this before?

• Virtual LTSP server with KVM

  I want to setup a kvm-based LTSP appliance with Ubuntu 10.04 (server/desktop for ltsp) on a Dell PowerEdge 2900 for ~10-15 clients. People will mostly use Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice and Qcad. Does someone have any experience with this setup? I've had a similar setup with VMware Server 2 and Ubuntu 8.04. How good/bad is kvm compared to VMware for a LTSP appliance? Shall I stick with VMware or can I switch to KVM?

• Determining the health of a Cisco switch port?

  I've been chasing a packet-loss and network stability issue for a handful of end-users on an internal network for the past few days... These issues surfaced recently, however, the location was struck by lightning six weeks ago. I was seeing 5-10% packet loss between a stack of four Cisco 2960's and several PC's and phones on the other side of a 77-meter run. The PC's were run inline with the phones over a trunked link. We were seeing dropped calls and interruptions in client-server applications and Microsoft Exchange connectivity. I tried the usual troubleshooting steps remotely, having a local technician do the following during breaks in user and production activity: change cables between the wall jack and device. change patch cables between the patch panel and switch port(s). try different switch ports within the 2960 stack. change end-user devices with known-good equipment (new phones, different PC's). clear switch port interface counters and monitor incrementing errors closely. (Pastebin output of sh int) Pored over the device logs and Observium RRD graphs. No link up/down issues from the switch side. change power strips on the end-user side. test cable runs from the Cisco 2960 using test cable-diagnostics tdr int Gi4/0/9 (clean)* test cable runs with a Tripp-Lite cable tester. (clean) run diagnostics on the switch stack members. (clean) In the end, it took three changes of switch ports to find a stable solution. The only logical conclusion is that a few Cisco 2960 switch ports are bad or flaky... Not dead, but not consistent in behavior either. I'm not used to seeing individual ports die in this manner. What else can I test or check to determine if these devices are bad? Is it common for single ports to have problems, rather than a contiguous bank of ports? • changing ext4 journal data mode with remount?

  I'm tweaking ext4 file system for speed, one tweak at a time. First tweak is to change from "data=ordered" to "data=writeback". To test this, I execute "mount -n -o remount,data=ordered /" but I keep getting "mount: / not mounted already, or bad option". From lots of google'ing I found many questions about similar problems and one answer circa 2001+ext3 which says that you can't change the journal mode with remount. Is this limitation still current?

• Office 2003 won't install with proper CD KEY

  I wanted to reinstall Office 2003 Pro. I retrieved the key with NirSoft ProduKey, confirmed with Jelly Bean Windows Key Finder and the key is the same. I've tried 3 different Office 2003 PRO CD's and it still won't install because it's saying key is bad, i even tried with different key from other computer and it also won't install. Anyone can suggest some workaround?

  When i try to login to Nagios in my web browser and after having repeatedly enter my login and password on my Nagios page http://127.0.0.1/nagios/, i get this : Authorization Required This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested.   Hi, I was just wondering, is using a cron job that is group readable a security risk? In this case, the script is chmod 755, and the group is basically a group of the sysadmins on the machine. The permissions seem to be fine, but I'm just wondering whether it's a bad idea to keep this script in a group or world readable place because it's a backup script that needs to be run as root. • Audit success in event log from not administrator IP - is that immediately a hack success indicator?

  I checked event log today and between mass of failed audit events I found some successes which originated from not my country. However they look a little weird and no process is specified, while when I logon using RDP it says winlogon.exe I am wondering whether that means my system was compromised or there are good variants and it doesnt mean its all that bad. I am using a VPS solution if thats useful.

• Why does PSEXEC work if I don't specify a password?

  When I run PSEXEC to launch a process on a remote machine, if I specify the password in the command line it fails with: PsExec could not start cmd.exe on web1928: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. psexec \\web1928 -u remoteexec -p mypassword "cmd.exe" If I just specify: psexec \\web1928 -u remoteexec "cmd.exe" and type in the password it works just fine. The originating server is Windows 2003 and the remote server is Windows 2008 SP2.

• Linux: Dropbox alternative with sftp/rsync/... access

  Currently on my VPS I'm running couple of sites and Dropbox daemon to store backups. Problem is that VPS has 512M RAM and it was enough until new version of Wordpress (I don't know why, but now it consumes more memory) so I have a really bad choice: either stop Dropbox daemon and backups or to buy more memory (not that expensive but still). So I'm looking for some way to rsync data into Dropbox or similar service or figure out how to make Dropbox consume less memory. Any ideas?
