• browser instant updates with ajax/jquery

    - by wcpro
    I'm trying to reverse engineer how facebook handles their notifications, where when you get a message you get instantly notified via the browser. I've fiddled with it for a little bit and realized that there is always a pending GET request "listening" if you will to some sort of update from the server. This appears to be some sort of observer pattern. I was just wondering if this pattern was documented somewhere.

  • How to include the right reference in C# using the "Browser" tab

    - by vizcaynot
    Hello: I am working on VS2010 C# and I want to add a .dll reference compiled under VS2008; this .dll exists in 2 versions: Debug and Release. The .dll is not under .NET, COM or projects tabs, so I only have the "browser" tab to add the .dll to the reference. My question is: How can I indicate to VS to take the release .dll version when I compile in the release mode and to take the debug .dll version when I compile in the debug mode? Thanks.

  • Crossplatform development for iPhone & Android

    - by LeonixSolutions
    As far as I can see there doesn't seem to any mature environment for crossplatform development for iPhone & Android slate (but feel free to correct me). I don't know Ipad, I must admit. Any reason why plain Java wouldn't cut it? (maybe underlying things like database (I am not too concerned with hardware)) I am thinking to try to make everything browser based, although that won't get around the d/b & h/w issues, unless there is JS framework that does so. Any advice?

  • Javascript: move the "view point" of the browser

    - by ArchJ
    I have a page with many out-of-bounds contents and since I set body{overflow:hidden}, they are not outside the viewport. So I want to attach a function to a button which would move the PoV of the browser so that the out-of-bounds contents would come into the viewport. What I can think of now is to set body{position:relative} and use jQuery to animate() the body instead. But in terms of performance, is there a better way to achieve that?

  • Javascript form validation only works in firefox

    - by Logic Artist
    Hello, I am relatively new to Javascript so I'm hoping this is a simple mistake. I building a generic form validation function that is called on the form's onSubmit. The function loops through all the form's child elements, looks for certain classes, and analyzes the contents of the appropriate fields. If it finds something missing or erroneous, it displays the appropriate error message div and returns false, thus preventing the form from being submitted to the php page. It works well in firefox 3.6.3, but in every other browser I've tested (Safari 4.0.4, Chrome 4.1, IE8) it seems to ignore the onSubmit and jump straight to the php processing page. HTML CODE: <fieldset class="required radioset"> Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Option 4
Please make a selection
</fieldset> <fieldset class="required checkset">  Choice 1    Choice 2    Choice 3    Choice 4
Please choose at least one
</fieldset> <fieldset class="required textfield" >  Required Text:
Please enter some text
</fieldset> <fieldset class="required email textfield">  Required Email:
The email address you have entered is invalid
</fieldset>

  JAVASCRIPT CODE: function validateRequired(id){ var form = document.getElementById(id); var errors = 0; var returnVal = true; for(i = 0; i < form.elements.length; i++){ var elem = form.elements[i]; if(hasClass(elem,"required")){ /*RADIO BUTTON or CHECK BOX SET*/ if(hasClass(elem,"radioset") || hasClass(elem,"checkset")){ var inputs = elem.getElementsByTagName("input"); var check = false; for(j = 0; j < inputs.length; j++){ if(inputs[j].checked){ check = true; } } if(check == false){ errors += 1; showError(elem); } else { hideError(elem); } } /*TEXT FIELD*/ else if(hasClass(elem,"textfield")){ var input = elem.getElementsByTagName("input"); if(input[0].value == ""){ errors += 1; showError(elem); } else { hideError(elem); /*EMAIL ADDRESS*/ if(hasClass(elem,"email")){ if(isValidEmail(input[0].value) == false){ errors += 1; showError(elem); } else { hideError(elem); } } } } } } if(errors > 0){ returnVal = false; } else { returnVal = true; } return returnVal;} I know this is a lot of code to look at, but any help would be appreciated. Since it works fine in one browser, Im not sure how to start debugging. Thanks Andrew

  • Pasting non-text data into browser-based apps

    - by John
    Imagine I want a user to be able to copy-paste a selection of pixels from MSPaint into a browser-based app. Is this possible using JavaScript in any current browsers? Will it become possible in HTML5? If not, is it feasible using something like Flex/Silverlight, or is it simply not possible at this time, and you'd have to save a file and manually upload it?

  • What browser incompatibilities does jquery solve?

    - by pd1138
    I'm currently on the fence about using or not using jquery. I've spent hours researching the pros and cons of using jquery (or any library for that matter). One of the big selling points of jquery is that it frees a developer from worrying about browser incompatibilities. I've tried to find any documentation on exactly which incompatibilities it overcomes. So far I haven't found any. Can anyone help me out with this.

  • C# Web Browser with click and highlight

    - by Tim Almond
    Before I go off and code this, I thought I'd see if anyone here knows of any open source (or paid for) equivalents already built. I'm looking for a browser control where users can preview a web page and then highlight elements of it and once highlighted, I can get the div or id of the element selected. Has anyone seen such a thing?

  • How can I make my FireFox Browser AddOn Backwards Compatible?

    - by bwheeler96
    I'm making a firefox browser add-on, and I just got all of the code working fine, but it will only install in FireFox 16, and I want it to be compatible at least from 10+, has anyone dealt with this issue? I have my package.json pointing to my install.rdf, and my install.rdf clearly states target applications. Is there any additional setup I need? here is my package.json { "name": "firefox-ext", "license": "MPL 2.0", "author": "", "version": "0.1", "fullName": "firefox-ext", "id": "jid1-AMCw25iQJof53w", "description": "a basic add-on" } and here is my install.rdf. <RDF xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#" xmlns:em="http://www.mozilla.org/2004/em-rdf#">
<em:id>jid1-AMCw25iQJof53w</em:id> <em:name>Generic App</em:name> <em:version>1.0</em:version> <em:type>2</em:type> <em:creator>Brian Wheeler</em:creator> <em:description>Good Stuff</em:description> <em:targetApplication>
<em:id>{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}</em:id> <em:minVersion>1.0</em:minVersion> <em:maxVersion>19.0</em:maxVersion>
</em:targetApplication>
</RDF> I'm using the CFX CLI Tools to make this, so everything has been built and tested with cfx init, cfx run, and cfx xpi I just can't figure out compatibility with anything other than 16. Also, major bonus points if someone could explain the advantages of a rapid release cycle, because it really seems to have shot 3rd party Mozilla developers in the foot in terms of software compatibility. Thanks, -Brian
