• Networkmapping script (VBS) Vista doesn't work, XP does

  Hi all, I've got a weird problem, (like always :p ) Okay: Situation: Windows 2003 domain with XP clients. With a GPO I'm running a VBS script on login to map a few drives. This works great on XP, but not on Vista. If I manually run the script after the user has logged on, it works. So I know the script works on Vista, it just doesn't run via the GPO. The user has admin privileges. I also have the same problem on Windows 7 RC1. So it must be related. • Wordpress Directory Permission to allow uploads, plugin folders, etc

  I have a wordpress pre-made site which were developed on my localmachine, and i uploaded it too a vps running on debian6, using nginx, mysql, php. Following this guide: 1) Create an unprivilaged user, this could be say 'karl' or whatever, and make them belong to the www-data group. So that if I were to login as karl and create a web root in say /home/karl/www/ , all the files will be owned by karl:www-data 2) Set up nginx as the user www-data in nginx.conf 3) Set up PHP-FPM to run as www-data 4) Place your files in /home/karl/www/[domain name maybe]/public_html/, upload as 'karl' so you don't have to chown everything again. when i type ls -l inside public_html/ it shows that all the files inside are owned by karl:karl. But the public_html directory is owned by karl:www-data. I chmod 0755 the folder wp-content but i still get the error: ERROR: Path ../wp-content/connection_images does not seem to be writeable. I know i shouldn't set it too 777 due to security reason, how should i set it too proper permission? and what should i set also to allow my users to upload,write posts,edit articles? • Windows 7 doesn't boot when second hard disk is connected

  I'm sorry for my bad english on beforehand. I have two hard disks, one SATA and another IDE. I have windows XP and 7 on the SATA one, and Ubuntu on the IDE. Both of them boots and works, bios recognizes them, just works. After I installed Windows 7, and connected the IDE drive, it freezes on "Starting Windows" (the black screen with the Windows logo). I unplug the IDE drive, and it starts normally. Windows XP starts normally on both situations (with or without the IDE one connected), same for Ubuntu (it works with both disks connected or just the IDE where it is). The IDE drive is on good status according to SMART. The IDE is first on boot order. It goes to the Ubuntu's grub first, then by default it goes to the Windows 7 bootloader, and then to XP. I think the problem is not about the bootloader or grub. I just read that it can be solved formatting the "problematic" hard disk because Windows 7 cannot handle so many active partitions or something like that. But that's not an option for me, I don't want to lose my Ubuntu nor have it unbootable. How can I solve this without this consecuences I mentioned? Any help would be appreciated.

• Windows Vista claims wireless key is the wrong length

  A family member of mine is house sitting and has been given the details of their wifi. The access point is an Airport Express, it has WEP encryption (I think) and they've been given a passphrase to use. I know it's a passphrase and not the encrypted key as it's an English word. The passphrase is 10 characters long. The problem is that Vista complains that it's not a valid key as it must be a 5 or 13 character non-hex key or a 10 or 26 character hex key. (From what I've read this suggests the encryption is WEP?) I've found a couple of suggested solutions, but I'm not actually at the house at the moment so I wanted to make sure I have a good chance of getting it to work when I'm there but have no internets to ask. Solution 1: Vista needs to be told explicitly what kind of encryption and key is being used. Specify in the connection settings that you are using WEP and that it is a "shared key". Solution2: Try converting the passphrase to hexadecimal using an ASCII-hex converter and entering that.

• How can I run Gnome or KDE locally in Cygwin?

  Apparently it is possible to do this using cygwin ports, as can be seen in screenshots. I followed this how-to to get apt-cygports set up, and I used it to install gnome-session. • Question about malware-sites: How can I be in danger?

  Hi people!! My english is horrible but i will do the best to be as accurate as posible. I have been reading here (in superuser) some questions about the necessity of antivirus software in Windows and some doubts arise. As far as i know (and imagine) virus software can only be harmful if I download any type of infected executable file and then I RUN IT. I mean that if i have the infected executable in my desktop but i leave it there for years without clicking it, I won't be in danger... My question is: How can i be in danger browsing the so called "malware pages or sites"??. If i am just browsing an "infected site" how could I be affected by a virus. In any moment the browser is asking me for the permission to download "something", so how could it be?? Although i don't give permission to the browser to download 'something' is data being downloaded to my computer?? Its some kind of cookie? I will ask in another way... What is the level of riskiness if i get inffected in a malware site compared with the level of an executable virus?? Thanks a lot!

• Cannot get Windows snipping tool to auto run with AutoHotKey

  I am trying to get Windows 7 sniping tool to run when I hit my PRINTSCREEN keyboard button with AUTOHOTKEY. I have been unsuccessful so far though. Here is what I have for the AutoHotKey script. I have tried this PRINTSCREEN::Run, c:\windows\system32\SnippingTool.exe and this PRINTSCREEN::Run, SnippingTool.exe and this PRINTSCREEN::Run, SnippingTool And all those give me this error when I hit the PRINTSCREEN button... It basicly says it cannot find the file, however the file path seems to be correct, I can copy paste it into a window and it opens the snipping tool, any ideas why it will not work? • How do I use a Minitel terminal as a linux dumb terminal

  I recently purchased a US version of the Alcatel Minitel terminal. I think it's a 1B version. Pictures of it here: I tried connecting a null modem to the 25 pin port on the back and plugging it into a linux box running agetty but I couldn't get it to show any signs of being connected. I used Google Translate to translate this document into English: http://mirabellug.org/wikini/upload/Documentations_minitel.pdf As far as I can tell, you take it out of videotex mode by typing Fcnt-T A, then turn off local echo with Fcnt-T E, then set it to 4800 baud with Fcnt-P 4. I presume Fcnt refers to the "CTRL" key on my terminal. But I think I'm doing something wrong, because it doesn't look like it's recognising the keystrokes, because "Fcnt-T A" just prints the letter A to the screen, which is not what you'd expect a function key combo to do. Has anyone used these minitel terminals as a linux terminal, and if so, please can you share how to configure the minitel to run as a terminal ? Is the 25 pin plug even the correct port to use ? I read something online that indicated you're supposed to use the 5 pin DIN plug instead, is that right ? If so, what's the 25 pin plug for ? If I am supposed to use the DIN plug, does anyone know the pinouts so I can make a cable ?

• Parsing text files

  I encountered a situation tonight where I wanted to parse a text file. I had a very, very long word list that contained English words delimited by lines. I wanted to get rid of every word (or line) that was longer than 7 characters. This would be simple in Linux but I can't seem to find a simple solution in WindowsXP. I tried using Notepad++ regular expression search but that was a huge failure. I tried using the expression .{6,} without finding any matches. I'm really at a loss because I thought this sort of thing would be extremely easy and there would be tons of tools to accomplish a task like this. It seems like Notepad++ supports every other feature in the world except the very basic ones that seem the most obvious. Another one of my goals was to put some code before and after the word on each line. aardvark apple azolio would turn into INSERT INTO Words (word) VALUES ('aardvark'); INSERT INTO Words (word) VALUES ('apple'); INSERT INTO Words (word) VALUES ('azolio'); What suggestions/tools/tips do you have to accomplish tasks similar to this in WindowsXP?

• Mail.app doesn't detect sender in Address Book

  I don't understand, how does 'smart addresses' in Mail.app work. Recently I mentioned, that for some emails I don't see person's full name in 'From' column. I started to dig into this behavior and found out, that I have few contacts in my Address Book, that are not recognized by Mail.app. Here how it looks: I have a person in Address Book with filled email entry and filled first/last name (localized). I have an incoming email from that person (from email specified in Address Book), but first/last name in the email itself doesn't match with ones specified in Address Book (e. g. 'From' field in email looks like 'John [work] <[email protected]>' while Address Book entry is 'John Smith' (localized, in Russian)). And Mail.app doesn't recognize that this mail is originating from that person in Address Book: if I click on 'From' field, it suggests to me to add sender to Address Book, while for others' emails I have 'Show in Address Book' menu entry (especially for ones with full localized name in 'From' field). I'm wondering, is that behavior correct or I'm missing something? I'm using Snow Leopard & Mail 4.0; my system language set to English, if that matters. I'd like to have some clarifications on that Mail.app behavior: whenever it fixable or not (and if it's fixable, I'd like to see a fix). By the way, is it possible to match sender's address against Address Book entry in filter rules or not? That would be great, if I can create rules like 'move all mail from that person to that folder' without specifying exact source address. Thanks, Ivan.

• Typing Japanese on Windows Vista with Dvorak

  I'm using Windows Vista, and I type English with the Dvorak keyboard layout, and I want to be able to type Japanese text that way, too. I've figured out how to set it up to let me type Japanese here, but it uses QWERTY. What I've got so far is: click the "EN" in the taskbar, and select "JP" if the letter that appears in the taskbar is "A", hit alt-~ to change it to "?" type as if I was typing Romaji on a QWERTY keyboard, (e.g., left pinky home row, right ring finger top row), and hiragana appear (??) press spacebar to convert to kanji (e.g., ?), and return to accept That all works great, but it assumes I'm on QWERTY, which isn't very comfortable for me. I want everything the same, but to be able to type kana with Dvorak (e.g., left pinky home row, left ring finger home row - ??). I can do this on Mac OS, so it's not an unheard-of feature. But it was kind of an obscure setting to find, so I figure on Windows it's probably a really obscure setting. :-) But I haven't been able to find it yet. Thanks!

• Terrible noises from subwoofer of ACER Aspire 6930 with Realtek sound chip

  After approximately 5-15 min of listening to music my subwoofer begins to make terrible noises. He's just "coughing". That began after 6 months I had this computer. Now I found out, that I can temporarily fix this problem by "restarting" the audio stream of the application that plays music. For example reloading last.fm page (reloads the flash file). Another way to reset the audio playback is switching the speaker configuration shown below in the screenshot. According to many posts on the internet like http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/52918-20-acer-aspire-6935g-speaker-problem ACER support isn't any help Exchanging hardware doesn't fix the problem Even the later models have this problem Turning off the volume of the subwoofer is not an option to me. I still have warranty (I bought an extension of one year). I already tried about 15 versions of the Realtek driver with no success. I am not sure but MAYBE the problem did not occur on the original windows vista that was shipped with this computer. However, I removed the original windows for good reasons (english). What do you suggest me? Did anyone fix this problem? Maybe by writing a script which resets the audio streams every 5 minutes? Shall I take the effort to deal with the acer support until they give me another model? (I won't have a computer than for a longer time, will spend money on telephone hotlines (1,30 EUR / min)......)   I want to create a simple load balancer for the two servers. The problem is with CNAME records, I think. The problem is that AppFog doesn't have public IP for application (same as OpenShift). How to do that Haproxy to perform a proper connection between Load Balancer and this two servers? Example: This is real app - http://freechat.eu01.aws.af.cm Haproxy only resolves IP for this domain which is 46.51.204.8:80 Of course this IP will not show my application, only an error page. • convert decrypted .vobs to .avi with ffmpeg on ubuntu

  I have a .vob file that has bee ripped from a dvd, when I watch the .vob its very good quality video and 5.1 english audio but when I use ffmpeg it has rubbish video and mono french audio. That was using this command: ffmpeg -i /samba/ripping/vobs/12161840#2.vob -f avi /samba/ripping/avis/test.avi I've tried a few different variations on that but it never comes back with anything good just bigger files with bad video and incorrect sound.   What I'm trying to do is to take a movie (in an Matroska container), convert all audio tracks to AC3 and don't touch anything else. I'm using this line: avconv -i infile.mkv -map 0 -vcodec copy -scodec copy -acodec ac3 -ab 256k outfile.mkv This works fine, except when there are subtitles embedded. • Ubuntu purple splash screen with blinking pixels?

  I had ubuntu 9.10 I upgraded to 10.04 after solving some problems (freeze at boot). Since then, I don't have the ubuntu's logo showing up when I boot, but a purple screen with some blinking pixels. I didn't care much about it... but today my computer took too long at that screen (normally it was just 1/4 second, but today it was like a minute..). And it happened like 4 or 5 times in a row (Only at the 5th time I realised that it was not freezing up, but it simply would took more time) After a reboot, it is again 1/4 second of purple screen but I don't want this problem to return.. so I want to get rid of the purple screen (I think it is an indicator of the problem) Well, I already installed the graphic drivers (going to system admnistration hardware drivers). But it didn't solve anything. (I don't know if it is even related) I searched in google, found something old (2006) and I think it maybe has some relation with my problems .. http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-294692.html But couldn't understand the conversation (i'm a linux novice) Sorry for my horrible english.. • Windows 2012 RDS Temporary profile for Administrator

  I've configured a Windows 2012 RDS Farm with two virtual servers (VMWare - each one on a different ESX server). Both servers have Licensing, Web Access, Gateway, Connection Broker and Session Host roles. High Availability is set up and it works fine. Remote Apps are working and even Windows XP clients have access to the web interface. User profile path is \vmfiles1\UserProfileDisks\App\ and almost everyone has full right access to it. The problem I have is that I would like to be able to access both servers at the same time with the Administrator account (console), but each time I try, the second server that I logon to give me access with a temporary profile. I tried to enable/disable multiple sessions per user and forced Admin logoff with the GPO but nothing changed. Another thing is that the server pool is not saved, so each time I restart the RDS server or I logoff from it, I have to add a server in the server manager. Do you have any idea? Sorry if my english is not perfect.

• Distortion problem with Creative audio equalizer

  Hi, I have a problem with the Creative Console EQ, I don't know if it's fixable or not (is the EQ software or hardware on these cards?). Basically, I have enormous distortion with certain sounds in the 30 - 125 hz range. When this happens I get some sort of "frrzzzz" (sorry, I'm french and don't really know the correct english word for that) on top of the original sound. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy SE. I'm using the Daniel_K drivers, on Windows 7 Profesionnal x64. All the effects are disabled except EQ. Steps to reproduce Put the card in 24bit/96khz mode. The problem is also present with 16bit/48khz but seems to be less audible. In the Creative Console, use the following EQ: (full size) Play this sound at a reasonably high volume. You should hear distortion on the two "booms". Especially the second one. Disable Creative EQ. Play the sound in an application with an integrated EQ (e.g. foobar2000, ffdshow) using the same EQ parameters. There is no distortion. Conclusion: the Creative EQ is broken. Is anyone having the same problem? I'm also interested in the results with other Creative cards or even other brands soundcards with a similar EQ feature.

• What are some of the best answer file settings for a WDS Deployment?

  I've had my head buried in answer files for days now and have gotten quite comfortable setting them up, test, etc... I use a handful of Components to help my migrations, for my unattend.xml I like: Windows-International-Core-WinPE -- this is good for setting Locales the preboot environment (en-us for us english US speakers). Keeps me from having to set these on the initial image boot. Windows-Setup_neutral -- I like the WindowsDeploymentServices -> ImageSelection, especially if I'm only pushing a single image. This keeps me from having to select it each time. My OOBE_Unattend.xml is really useful and I barely have to touch anything during this part of the installation: Windows-Shell-Setup_neutral -- This lets me put a ProductKey in for my MAK volume license (very useful and time saving). I can also set the TimeZone for the installation. Windows UnattendedJoin_neutral -- I couldn't live without this component. It joins the machine on my domain before logging in as a domain administrator. I would hate to not have this ability. Windows-International-Core -- Again this component really speeds up the OOBE process. I configure my locals and time zone so I don't have to do it by hand when the machine enteres OOBE. Windows-Shell-Setup -- Allows you to configure an autologon when the new machine is finished. I like to logon as a domain admin automatically for customizing and troubleshooting the new machine immediately after it is imaged. Also the OOBE component under here lets me skip the EULA, Hide Wireless Setup, and set my default NetworkLocation. All of this makes the entire OOBE totally automated. What are some other good components I am missing as far as helping me get these images pushed and configured as quickly as possible?

• Typing Japanese on Windows Vista with Dvorak

  I'm using Windows Vista, and I type English with the Dvorak keyboard layout, and I want to be able to type Japanese text that way, too. I've figured out how to set it up to let me type Japanese here, but it uses QWERTY. What I've got so far is: click the "EN" in the taskbar, and select "JP" if the letter that appears in the taskbar is "A", hit alt-~ to change it to "?" type as if I was typing Romaji on a QWERTY keyboard, (e.g., left pinky home row, right ring finger top row), and hiragana appear (??) press spacebar to convert to kanji (e.g., ?), and return to accept That all works great, but it assumes I'm on QWERTY, which isn't very comfortable for me. I want everything the same, but to be able to type kana with Dvorak (e.g., left pinky home row, left ring finger home row - ??). I can do this on Mac OS, so it's not an unheard-of feature. But it was kind of an obscure setting to find, so I figure on Windows it's probably a really obscure setting. :-) But I haven't been able to find it yet. Thanks!

• GtkView GtkSpell and myspell backend

  Hi I have an IM client pidgin. It is launched under locale ru_RU.UTF-8 Then when I type messages in GtkView widget it highlights the misspelled words. However it uses a GtkSpell which uses enchant, which uses myspell backend (I provided it with symlink to openoffice dictionaries folder /usr/share/enchant/myspell -- /usr/share/myspell/dict). Now the problem is that whichever language I use - it still uses ru_RU language to select the dictionary, so all english text is being underlined as a misspelled text. When I switch locale to en_US and then launch pidgin under it - then all russian text becomes misspelled. I don't like this behaviour as I use pidgin to chat in both languages. Is there a way to somehow setup enchant/myspell so that it searches in both dictionaries en_US and ru_RU independent of the locale I launched pidgin (GtkView) in ? I have Debian lenny/5.0.1 distro. enchant version 1.5.0. /usr/share/enchant/enchant.ordering looks like this: *:myspell meaning that for all languages backend is myspell myspell dictionary.lst file looks like this: DICT en GB en_GB DICT en US en_US THES en US th_en_US_v2 THES en GB th_en_US_v2 THES ru RU th_ru_RU_v2 DICT ru RU ru_RU DICT uk UA uk DICT ru RU en_US

• Why does Google Chrome ignore "last_known_google_url" property in "Local State" file?

  I want to force my Google Chrome web browser (version 21.0.1180.89, 64-bit) to use non-localized search (thus google in english) through address bar, using the default Google search engine. To achieve that, I have to change value of the property last_known_google_url to https://www.google.com/?hl=en& in Local State file (for instance on Linux, the full path to the file is ~/.config/google-chrome/Local State). In that file, there should be the property: "browser": { "last_known_google_url": but it is not. Even if I add there the property, it has no impact on search - Google Chrome does not use the property and still searches in localized version. Another option is to put the property to Preferences file (for instance on Linux, the full path to the file is ~/.config/google-chrome/Default/Preferences) - which works perfectly when I start Google Chrome and do some search - but just after that, the property (actually the whole Preferences file) is overriden, so "the most important" trailing part ?hl=en& of the property value is removed - and without it, the non-localized search does not work anymore. Why does Google Chrome ignore last_known_google_url property in Local State file?
