• CakePHP - get last query run

  I want to get the last query CakePHP ran. I can't turn debug on in core.php and I can't run the code locally. I need a way to get the last sql query and log it to the error log without effecting the live site. This query is failing but is being run. something like this would be great: $this->log($this->ModelName->lastQuery); Thanks in advance.

• logrotate compress files after the postrotate script

  I have an application generating a really heavy big log file every days (~800MB a day), thus I need to compress them but since the compression takes time, I want that logrotate compress the file after reloading/sending HUP signal to the application. /var/log/myapp.log { rotate 7 size 500M compress weekly postrotate /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/myapp.pid 2>/dev/null` 2>/dev/null || true endscript } Is it already the case that the compression takes place after the postrotate (which would be counter-intuitive)? If not Can anyone tell me if it's possible to do that without an extra command script (an option or some trick)? Thanks Thomas

• How do i return a StringWriter When I cant Clone it?

  My code looks like the below. Obviously i cant write 'ok' because the object has been disposed. I cant do return sw.Clone() bc clone doesnt exist. If i dont use a using then at any point between = new and return (like iterating and writing to the object as my example doesnt do) can have an exception and thus not disposing the object. Am i to define sw outside of a try block and check if its null then dispose in a catch block? That seems like a bit of excessive work. • Better way to make a bash script self-tracing?

  I have certain critical bash scripts that are invoked by code I don't control, and where I can't see their console output. I want a complete trace of what these scripts did for later analysis. To do this I want to make each script self-tracing. • ShowDialog returns immediately after a handled exception in .net compact framework

  The problem I am having is that for some reason ShowDialog returns immediately after handle an exception. However, it works for MessageBox.Show() or at the second time I call ShowDialog. What is the best workaround for this problem? I was only able to find this. And I cannot believe that no one else has this issue. I am using .net compact framework 3.5.   I did a program and in some point - when the program needs to exit he throw an exception here is the code try { Application.Run(new Form1()); } catch (ExitException) { } In the VS it's working fine (VS 2008 - C#) But when I run it separately from the VS - the program say so the error is not handled I know so I can do like this Application.ExitThread() - But... • Calling same function until it connect to server

  I am in the process of designing a system where i need to keep on trying to connect to MQ server unitl i get a connection. By default if the MQ is not availlble it will thorugh exception. How can call the same method again and again until i get the connection. I know i can use recursion, is there any better way to do it . Becuase i would like to avoid infinite loops. I also want to wait the the furthere processing until i get connection. I am using .net 2.0 with C#. It is window Service application.

  How do you log messages to a log file in a specific path from a bash script? A naive implementation would be commands like: echo My message >>/my/custom/path/to/my_script.log But this probably has many disadvantages (no log rotation for example). I could use the 'logger' command, but it does not support logs in custom paths as far as I know and is not easy to configure if you have lots of bash scripts that could use a custom log file. In a scripting language like Ruby all this is quite easy: https://github.com/rudionrails/yell/wiki/101-the-datefile-adapter I could also make my own logger command based on this ruby library and call it from my bash scripts, but I guess there is already a well known solution that provides similar behavior for shell scripts?

  Looking for suggestions/best practices on managing error codes and messages in a multi-tiered applications. Specifically things like: Where should error codes be defined? Enum? Class? How are error messages or further details associated with the error codes? resource files? attributes on enum values, etc.? If you have a multi-tier application consisting of DAL, BLL, UI, and Common projects for example, should there be a single giant list of codes for all tiers, or are the codes extensible by project/tier? I want to display parts of the error object in an except block (similar to the err object in VBScript, which has Err.Number and Err.Description).   I'm trying to deserialize JSON which I'm getting from an external source into an Entity Framework entity class using the following code: var serializer = new JavaScriptSerializer(); IList<Feature> obj = serializer.Deserialize<IList<Feature>>(json); The following exception is thrown: Object of type 'System.Collections.Generic.List1[JustTime.Task]' cannot be converted to type 'System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.EntityCollection1[JustTime.Task]'. My model is simple: The Feature class has a one-to-many relation to the Tasks class. The problem appears to be the deserializer is trying to create a generic List to hold the collection of tasks instead of an EntityCollection. I've tried implementing a JavaScriptConverted which would handle System.Collections.Generic.List but it didn't get called by the deserializer.

• Handling Exceptions that happen in a asp.net MVC Controller Constructor

  What's the best way to handle exceptions that happen from within a controller's constructor? All I can think of to do is use Application_OnError() or put a try/catch in my ControllerFactory. Neither of these solutions seem ideal. Application_OnError is to broad - I have some non-mvc content in the site that has its own error handling. Using a try/catch block seems kinda hacky. If I'm serving different content type -html/text/json/rss.... I would like to be able to handle the exception from within the action method instead of having to write all kinds of conditions to determine what kind of error message to serve. Am I missing something here, or has anyone else dealt with this?
