• Installed Ubuntu on 12.04 on my MacBook Air now I want to expand the partition

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a 40GB partition on my Mac Book Air (5,2). I'm having so much fun with it, I'm ready to make the switch permanently and replace it as the primary OS on my machine. I realize I can wipe the machine and start from scratch, but I'm looking for alternatives since I like my current setup. Options are... Create a backup and restore the back up to a larger partition (Assuming I should keep the default OS X install for firmware updates) Create a backup and restore to the entire drive (create a restore usb stick for OSX - not sure if that's possible?) re-size my current partition and wipe the OS X partition and either, A. re-install OS X (similar to option 1) or B. create the USB key (similar to option 2). Thoughts? Any other suggestions? Would also like thoughts on the "optimal" or "best practice" for partitioning Ubuntu. Thanks!

• Most Useful New Technology?

  I'm looking to take a sort of sabbatical, and I'd love to use it to learn a new technology. My question is this: What's the most useful "new" technology for a software engineer to use? Node.js, iOS programming, Android, something else? I'd prefer to stay away from anything too new or experimental, since those are, in my experience, rarely actually used in professional production environments (for better or worse). Does anyone happen to have stats on how many jobs there are for each new technology or have anecdotes about how fun each one is? I've been using python/Django, so that's out, and it's similar to Ruby so i don't think learning Ruby would be that useful to expanding my skills. Anyone have any other ideas?

• Whats a good host for an active vBulletin site?

  I've been switching hosts using a VPS each time and I'm just really not sure I'm finding the right VPS's. I've used a VPS from burst.net & rubyringtech and I just feel like it's slowly killing my site because of the slow speed. I really don't know if it's the network or the VPS itself but I really wish to fix this. When I TOP into the VPS peak times it shows this: top - 03:18:56 up 16:33, 1 user, load average: 1.33, 1.40, 1.33 Tasks: 30 total, 1 running, 29 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 27.2%us, 13.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 59.2%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 1048576k total, 679712k used, 368864k free, 0k buffers Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cached And pages take atleast a good 2-3 minutes to load. I have only like 50-60 members on the forum also. I had a shared hosting account and the forum was lightning fast.... Is a VPS a bad idea? :\ What should I do to fix this? I'm running lighttpd with xcache, and the latest mysql + php version. The server is a intel i7 2600 w/ 1gb uplink (I think the 1gb uplink is a lie because I've tested the network and the highest download speed I've seen was 20mb/s from a code.google page) All in all I've seen people talking about linode. Should I try them? I honestly don't need a dedicated server yet it's only 50-70 members online. What should I do? I really want a VPS because I enjoy root access. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• Swap 95%+ , but a lot of free ram memory

  I am running centos 5.8 with cpanel. Lately I am getting reports that my swap is full , but there is a lot of free memory to use. top - 10:33:43 up 133 days, 17:00, 1 user, load average: 0.05, 0.03, 0.05 Tasks: 170 total, 1 running, 169 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 2.1%us, 0.5%sy, 0.0%ni, 97.2%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.2%si, 0.0%st Mem: 24726100k total, 8255368k used, 16470732k free, 599560k buffers Swap: 1046520k total, 984740k used, 61780k free, 3641828k cached How do I solve this? The unused ram memory should be used instead of the swap. Or should I increase the swap ( and how do I do that ? ). Thanks

  I've been in my first programming job for just under 2 years now (it will be two years next month). I went from Junior Developer initially to just Developer after about a year (when the senior developer left). It's a small company and I write all the code. I have been offered a cool new job (Windows 8, Visual Studio 2012, SQL Server 2012, MVC etc etc) and I am considering it not because I hate my current job (I don't, it's fun) but because I am scared that if I stay in the one job for too long, other employers won't want to hire me as it will look like I can't get a job anywhere else.   Assuming I have an applicant information entry screen, the number and types of fields on which can be defined by the system administrator, how do I go about counting the number of Internal Logical Files (ILFs) and Data Element Types (DETs) for the related data functions? So far I have come up with something like this: ILF #1 (control information): Field Metadata, 1 RET, ~3 DET (name, type, mandatory) ILF #2 (business data): Applicant Data, most likely 1 RET, but how many DET? Of course I could count it as 2 DET (Field ref, Value), but I am not sure that would be correct And when it comes to an External Input (EI), say, "Add New Applicant", things become even more complicated, because the number of DET corresponding to the user-editable fields is totally dependent on the control information in ILF #1, and I am out of ideas here... And it's not a thing of inertia where people just use something because "that's how it's always been done", these guys are agile and sometimes seem to embrace change just for the fun of having more things to fix. Yet no one gave me any convincing arguments for using Bzr over Hg or Git. I can get seeing Git as "too complicated" but you can't use this king of judgement between Hg and Bzr. So then, what are the features of Bazaar that would justify its use over Mercurial (or Git) in any given situation?

• How can I pin point a USB file transfer bottleneck in Unix?

  I'm experiencing very slow data transfer speeds over USB 2.0 on my nix box and was wondering how I can pin-point the cause of the problem. I've looked into iotop and top but the cpu and mem figures look normal (compared to guides I have checked). The box which is affected is Ubuntu 12.04 32bit Server running on an Asus EEE 701 2G model and I am transferring from the OS over USB 2.0 to an external HDD (which transfers at 30MB/s+ on Windows 7 on other machine). I get rsync write speeds of 1MB/s from OS to USB HDD which seems ridiculously slow. These speeds are consistent with other USB HDDs and sticks.

  Will the developer or company (is a corporation or is not) be responsible for legal consequences, or will they be covered and protected by the Apple Store Terms of Use agreement? For example: 1) the app is fun and the kids show the app to a parent who is driving the car, and got into an accident. 2) if the app does road navigation and it went into problem or crash or slow, and caused an accident while driving. 3) or if the terms require using an app in a safe and non-time critical situation, what if the app recommend some exercise routine or diet (such as suggesting eating more eggs, milk, or using some herbs), and it could be argued that they caused any health consequence?

• Why does the homepage rank in exact match and not in broad anymore? [closed]

  My website was ranking on page one for "walking shoes reviews" in broad and exact. It has disappeared in the rankings for broad and yet still ranks in exact match. No indication in the Webmaster tools of anything wrong yet Google analytics shows no more activity. his occurred sometime after Panda and Penguin. Not sure which because I didn't check closely for a while, this is a fun site for me. I walk for the enjoyment and health benefits so I built this site.

Ability to manipulate the web server, so I can make pretty URLs. Not spammy (if you've ever looked for hosting, you know what I mean). Semi-professional - no ridiculous downtime or long response time. I obviously don't need anything spectacular (I'm not aiming to be the next Facebook) but something that doesn't seem cheap. Reasonably priced - obviously this is a side project for fun so I'm not planning on making or dispensing any sort of "serious" revenue.

I have been experimenting with the MaxClients and MaxSpareServers values but I still get some downtime during peek hours. How can I calculate the best values for my configuration based on the amount of ram that I have ? • Placing advice on any parameter of a given type in AspectJ

  Hi, Im doing a POC using Aspectj. class BaseInfo{..} class UserInfo extends BaseInfo{..} class UserService { public void getUser(UserInfo userInfo){..} public void deleteUser(String userId){..} } I've defined an advice, that gets invoked when I pass an UserInfo instance.But when i try to pass the BaseInfo, the advice is not getting invoked. Below block executes the afterMethod as expected for getUser. &ltaop:pointcut id="aopafterMethod" expression="execution(* UserService.*(..,UserInfo,..))" / &gtaop:after pointcut-ref="aopafterMethod" method="afterMethod" / But when i try to give BaseInfo instead of UserInfo, the aspect is not getting triggered. Am i missing something? Kindly help me on this issue.

• Do you need expensive servers and fancy hosting in order to make a multiplayer game?

  I've finished working on an RPG and it would seem so much more fun to make it multiplayer. SFML has a networking feature, I figured it's possible but then again, never in my life have I even tried something basic about networking, in fact my knowledge of it is very limited. What would it take to make a multiplayer game resource-wise? I'm not talking about an MMO, more like a co-op type of game. Do I need mountains of cash to pay for hosting and servers and many many things to make one?

• Load on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS high

  My Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server periodically has a high load avg spike(once every 2 days) resulting in Apache timing out and virtualy everything even SSH to the server is not possible. When I am on the console and run TOP is see that The load avg increases from less than 1 to above 60 in 15 mins.   SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Greetings! I will be speaking at NNUG Kristiansand tonight (sorry for the very short notice). So I was thinking what should I demo tonight?Hmm!!!Instead of using any slides or such material, what I thought would be a tonne of fun, would be to develop a service bus based application running in Azure. This will be a good opportunity to code and talk, and run into some snafus and show off some VS2012 improvements/annoyances. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a brand new drive (dual boot with windows on another drive) and re-partitioned it afterwards (with gparted off of live cd) like so (sudo fdisk -l) : Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 2048 63735807 31866880 83 Linux /dev/sdb2 1448509438 1465147391 8318977 5 Extended Partition 2 does not start on physical sector boundary. /dev/sdb3 63735808 1448507391 692385792 83 Linux /dev/sdb5 1448509440 1465147391 8318976 82 Linux swap / Solaris I'd like to use sdb3 as default home for all work and fun related program installs and files, but I haven't even gotten as far as changing permissions on it. Any help will be most appreciated.

• Purchasing a TV show adaptation rights, how does it work?

  Basically, I was thinking about a game based on a TV show, just for fun, and ended up thinking "well, it's not like it can be made anyway". Or can it? In the present situation, developing a game by myself/ourselves on my/our free time, and then using crowdfunding to purchase the rights is not that crazy, if the show is really popular... and the rights not too expensive. Purchasing the rights of the whole show is obiously a sh!tload of money, but what about adaptation rights? What is the range of price it can be? Is it a percentage of the full rights? Does it depend on the kind of adaptation (novel vs. toy vs. game)? ps: if it can help answer, I was thinking about a MLPFIM retro RPG. Please don't laugh at me.

It seems to me that ray tracing is a prime candidate for parallel processing, which is something I have very little experience in. My question is this: how do I know the optimum number of concurrent processes to run? My first instinct tells me: it depends on how many cores my processor has, but like I said I'm new to this and I may be neglecting something.

• How can I make zaz save its profile data?

  I've been playing Zaz recently as a time waster and stress beater, but it seems not to be actively maintained, and is not saving profile data under Ubuntu 12.10. It's getting to be more stressful than fun, because it keeps crashing, and under Unity, Gnome Shell, KDE (in other words, any opengl enabled WM) it makes the GPU lockup. How can I make it save the profile data or create a profile that I can manually place my level info in? I'm tired of playing the same levels over and over and not being able to start from the ones I've already passed. I am still yet to find any info on fixing this. Any clues?
