  • How to connect the virtual networks of vmware guests running on different hosts?

    In a test setup, we are running several virtual machines on a single vmware workstation host. All virtual machines are connected via a "host only" network. This runs fine up to 2 or 3 virtual machines (depending on the host hardware). To allow more virtual machines, we want to use more host machines. Details about the environment and applications: Host PCs are running Windows XP in a corporate intranet. VMware used is Workstation 6.5 Guests are running Windows Server 2003 All guests act as Web Servers One of the guests additionally acts as Windows File server, offering shared folders for the other guests to connect to. Restrictions: VMware guests shall not be visible from the intranet. Changes to the host PC are restricted by corporate policy. In the virtual network, no domain controller exists. All virtual machines are member of the same workgroup. Running the virtual network as NAT is possible. Port forwarding might be used if it does not conflict with ports used by the host PC. Looking for a solution, I found hints about using router or vpn software on the hosts, but without any details how to setup. (I found a similar question Sharing the network between 2 VMware hosts, but the answer was not sufficient for me.)

  • Is it possible for an application (written in Mono C#) to run a console command?

    I am wondering if a Mono C# application can somehow run a terminal command. For example, could the user give the program his or her password and then have the application run sudo apt-get install application-name (console requests password) password (console requests confirmation) y Preferably, this would be done without actually opening a terminal visible to the user, so that the application could provide the necessary feedback and manage the whole operation cleanly with as little user interaction as possible. Is there a way to do that? Let me know if clarification is needed. Thank you!

    I have heard about the GPX, but i don't really think the embedded market is mature enough in terms of performance, but what about the home console market ? I'm not talking about last-generation graphics, because that would be economically impossible, but what about an hardware as fast as a playstation 2/Xbox 1/Gamecube ? For games, the trick would be to ask some editors to recompile their best sellers for the new machine: those games being from the PSX age or even older console generations, I think this would have a very low cost job and they could still make some good profit, but I need to know if this is doable technically, considering the architecture which can be quite exotic. Do you think it would be a viable project to talk about to investors ?

  • Solutions for working with multiple branches in ASP.Net

    At work, we are often working on multiple branches of our product at one time. For example, right now, we have a maintenance branch, a branch with code just going to QA, and a branch for a new major initiative, that won't be merged for some time now. Our web project is set up to use IIS, so every time we switch to a different branch, we have to go in to IIS Admin and change the path on the virtual directory, then reset IIS, and sometimes even restart Visual Studio, to avoid getting build errors. Is there any way to simplify this, other than not having our web project set up as a virtual directory? I'm not sure we want to make that change at this point. What do you do to make this easier, assuming you do this? Corey @RedWolves, virtual machines would definitely work, but I'm not sure it would be any simpler, especially for some of the other developers on my team, which is partly why I'm looking for more simplicity. @Dan, we're not able to change source control providers, unfortunately. @pix0r, that's something I'll try when I get back to work. Thanks for the suggestion. @Haacked, I'll have to give that a try too, but I think we have some issues with why that won't work (I can't remember exactly why right now; this application was originally written in .Net 1.1, pre-Cassini, and I can't remember if we tried it when we upgraded to 2.0 or not). My local resource files are located on my pc at: C:\inetpub\wwwroot\GlobalX\Input\App_LocalResources Within this folder are my resource files for all the languages that site handles (InputContactDetails.aspx.ro.resx, InputContactDetails.aspx.hi.resx, etc.), as well as the default resource file (InputContactDetails.aspx.resx). I am receiving an error when I attempt to implement the virtual path string. I'm using my DNS as the Proxy server "abcdef.cloudapp.net" and port 80 (since that's my public endpoint).

  • One host on a network can't connect to one other host

    I'm on a local network with a few other people. On of the hosts is a virtual machine running in virtualbox on a mac, which has the ip address 192.168.0.35 (the VM that is, not the mac host). Everyone except one guy can connect (ie ping, ssh etc) to that machine. When that one guy tries to ping it he gets Request timeout for icmp_seq 0 Request timeout for icmp_seq 1 Request timeout for icmp_seq 2 which i understand is just how certain mac os's report an unreachable connection. He can ping all the other hosts on the network, ie our computers, and we can all ping the VM fine and connect to it with no problems etc. His ip is 192.168.0.17. I ssh'd onto his machine (as a new user 'anon') and saw the same problems. I can ssh onto the 192.168.0.35 VM as well. From there, i can ping other users, but when i ping the problem guy, it's unreachable that way round as well. He restarted his mac, and was fine for a while. Then, just stopped working again. He's got a different IP to before. Any ideas, anyone? Don't know enough about this stuff to even diagnose the problem. thanks, max

    I would like to have my svn/http server setup so I can access multiple repositories via a "svn" subdomain: https://svn.example.com/repo1 https://svn.example.com/repo2 I am using Debian 6, and already have multiple vhosts set up via the standard sites-available method. Resources and their problems: How To: subversion SVN with Apache2 and DAV This one doesn't deal with a server with multiple vhosts. Installing and Configuring Subversion This one only considers one subversion repository. This one does show putting the SVN DAV <Location> in the svn vhost file. However, it doesn't say whether to put it inside or outside the <VirtualHost> tag. Does this really limit the subversion access to just that vhost? I just tried, and can access /foorepo from any subdomain. Setting Up Subversion And Trac As Virtual Hosts On An Ubuntu Server This one appears to be very close, but I can still access repos from any vhost. In other words, it doesn't matter what subdomain I specify, as long as the path matches the repo name. Doesn't make any sense. And yes, my <Location> tag is inside the <VirtualHost>. A lot of these articles seem to have been written in 2006 or earlier, and don't necessarily conform to the configuration methods that newer distros are using. Can anyone guide me in the right direction?

  • Can't connect to a Hyper-V VM from anywhere but the host OS

    I have an unusual situation on hand where I'm able to connect to a Hyper-V guest VM from the HOST, but not from anywhere but the host. The VM is running WIn2k8R2 and has IIS installed and Remote Desktop enabled. If I browse to the IP from the host OS, the IIS7 page displays. I can also RDP into the guest OS from the host as well as ping. From OFF the host, RDP, web and ping all fail. If I completely shut off the guest VM's firewall, ping will then start to respond, but all RDP and port 80 still don't. The physical host machine has 2 nics installed, but only one is plugged in. The one plugged in has a static IP. I have one Hyper-V virtual network and it's set to external. The guest VM has one NIC with a different static IP than the host, but both are on the same subnet. The host machine is joined to the domain, the guest VM is not. Any sugestions? Thanks so much for any help you may be able to provide!

  • CD-ROM Cant Be Accessed After Installing VMware Tools on VMware Server 2.0.2

    Using VMware Server 2.02, I set up a new VM (Windows XP Pro) applied all of the updates, added Windows addons from the install CD, etc... I got it to a stable point and up through that point I was able to access the CD-ROM drive (E: on my host). What I never did before was install "VMware Tools" and since it claims to give better mouse and video support, I gave it a shot. What it does is it places the install package in a virtual CD-ROM drive. I ran the install, no errors and it wants a reboot. I log back in after reboot and pop in the install CD for Microsoft Office 2003 and I receive the message "Please Insert A Disc Into Drive D:". Drive D: would be the next logical drive after the C: drive where I chose to install the OS. The message box sits there and if I click "Cancel", to return to Windows Explorer, the status bar seems to blink ever 1/2 second - as if its polling for a CD-ROM drive or something. No bangs or exclamations in the Device Manager for any hardware. I had taken a snapshot prior to the VMware Tools install and upon restoring it, the CD-ROM is back. I made copies of two other VMs, installed the VMware Tools on those VMs and both experienced the same issues: Windows 2003 Server and Windows 7 (32-bit). Has anyone seen this issue and know of a fix for this? It would be nice to have the better graphics and better mouse control AND use my CD-ROM drive as well! Thank you.

    I am looking for some hardware recommendations on an upcoming virtualization project. We are a small company (80 users - 25 in site 1, 55 in site 2) currently using Windows Server 2003 - no VM servers yet. Our AD is setup where site 1 is the root domain and site 2 is a subdomain/subnet - connected by T1 and VPN for failover. The current DC's also server as file servers, print servers, AntiVirus servers. Email is in the cloud. Additionally then in site 1 we have 3 additional member servers - one running IBM Websphere for a customer specific app, one running Infor PowerLink (no real heavy load) and another that we use for Virtual Studio apps and also runs DirSync for Exchange Online. No heavy workloads on any of these machines really. We also have an AS400 box that we run ERP/CRM software on that site 2 connects to over the WAN link. In site 2 we also have a SQL machine that runs on Win2K server. Database files are not large less than 5 GB. Light to Medium workload on this machine. File servers in each site store less than 500 GB data and probably won't grow to more than 1TB in the next 5 years. I am looking to go to VMWare in both sites and virtualize all servers. What recommendations do you have for server, storage hardware? Is it safe to virtualize all of your DC's? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • How can I connect integrated webcam with virtualbox

    I am trying to use a Windows XP VM for VirtualBox on my Windows 8.1 laptop. I have tried the usual attaching USB device but I get an error saying "USB device is busy with previous request". My webcam is not active in any applications and this happens after a clean reboot of the host, the guest, and VirtualBox. I can tell whether a class is proxied or not based whether the class or any of it's method has an interception attribute, e.g. [Transaction] Is it possible to write a ReSharper 5 structural search that would warn if any non-virtual public methods are defined on a class with an interception attribute. E.g. I feel very stupid I lost a great blog post link which I found last month (and I'm not able to find it again..) so I try to ask here if anyone can help me: This is my host (laptop): 16GB DDR3 Ram HDD Hybrid 750GB 7200 (8GB SSD Cache) Mint 15 x64 Kernel 3.9.7 swappiness set to 10 The above are the important things about the host. So, My need is the ability to run 2 or 3 VMs at the same time. The lack of performance is about the disk, The last time from that blog post I lost, I setup /tmp to be mounted ad a memory partition and in my previous installation that was good, now I'm not able to find a good solution to tweak the things. I think with 16GB o RAM there will be no problems to run multiple VMs, but whe they start to swap or use the /tmp things going bad (guest cursor going too fast after a freeze, guest freeze and so on) Anyone can help me to fit a good host tweak and configuration to get better performance?   • What is the best VM for developing WPF apps from within OS X?

    All of my machines are Macs (Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac Mini (and Apple TV 2.0 too! :) ) but for my day-job, I develop .NET/WPF applications. Normally I just boot into Boot Camp and develop that way, which of course works great, but there are times when I need to simultaneously get to things on my Mac-side of the equation, so I've bought both VMware 3.1 and Parallels 6. Both work, however, even on my Mac Pro where I paid to upgrade to the better video cards (the NVidia 8600s I think vs. the stock ATI cards) the WPF performance bites!! Now this confuses me since both boast that they support not only hardware-accelerated OpenGL 2.1, but also hardware-accelerated DirectX 9 (VMware even allegedly supports DirectX 10!) via their respective virtual drivers and both can run 3D games just fine, even in a window. But even the simple act of resizing a WPF window that has a tiled background results in some HIDEOUS repainting and resizing behaviors. It's damn near closer to what you'd expect over RDP let alone a software-only renderer (forget accelerated hardware completely!) So... can anyone please tell me WTF WPF is doing differently? More importantly, how can I speed up the WPF performance? Should I switch to VirtualBox that also has support for DirectX? Or am I just gonna have to 'byte' the bullet (sorry... had to. So I like puns! Thank Jon Stewart!) and continue using Boot Camp?

  • Ubuntu VM "read only file system" fix?

    I was going to install VMWare tools on an Ubuntu server Virtual Machine, but I ran into the issue of not being able to create a cdrom directory in the /mnt directory. I then tested to see if it was just a permissions issue, but I couldn't even create a folder in the home directory. It continues to state that it is a read only file system. I know a little about Linux, and I'm not comfortable with it yet. Any advice would be much appreciated.   • Windows and file system abstraction - how much does it matter where something comes from?

    I have come across the following phenomenon and would like to know how leaky Windows' file system abstraction is or if there's something else involved. I partitioned the hard disk of my MacBook Pro and installed Windows 7 (64 bit). The Bootcamp driver package includes file system drivers (right term?) that enable Windows to access the Mac OS HFS+ partition. AFAIK it's a read-only access, but it works. Now, I have some disk images of stuff I usually install, so I grabbed a copy of Daemon Tools to mount them. When I mount an image saved on the HFS+ partition, about two out of three installers on these disks (usually InstallShield) crash with all sorts of weird errors. Most are just gibberish that lead to all sorts of non-solutions on Google, one was "This application is not the right type for your computer, check if you need 32 or 64 bit versions." When moving the image files to another Windows 7 computer on the network and mounting them from the network share, they work fine. My question now is, why do applications behave differently depending on whether the read-only image file, which should be abstracted away through the read-only virtual Daemon Tools drive, is located on a read-only HFS+ partition or on a Windows network share? And I'll just roll this into the question as well since I was wondering: Does the file system of a network share matter? Does the client system need to understand the file system of the share host or is that abstracted away in SMB?
