• Inspect in memory hsqldb while debugging

  We're using hdsqldb in memory to run junit tests which operate against a database. The db is setup before running each test via a spring configuration. All works fine. Now when a tests fails it can be convinient to be able to inspect the values in the in memory database. Is this possible? If so how? Our url is: jdbc.url=jdbc:hsqldb:mem:testdb;sql.enforce_strict_size=true The database is destroyed after each tests. But when the debugger is running the database should also still be alive. I've tried connecting with the sqldb databaseManager. That works, but I don't see any tables or data. Any help is highly appreciated!

  I have the following models: class Event < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :action_items end class ActionItem < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :event belongs_to :action_item_type end class ActionItemType < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :action_items end And what I want to do is, for a given event, find all the action items that have an action item type with a name of "foo" (for example). So I think the SQL would go something like this: SELECT * FROM action_items a INNER JOIN action_item_types t ON a.action_item_type_id = t.id WHERE a.event_id = 1 AND t.name = "foo" Can anybody help me translate this into a nice active record query? • How can I allow users to switch data sources for an SSRS report?

  I have two SQL Server databases with identical schemas, but different data. I also have SSRS generating reports, in native mode, for one of the databases. All reports the same shared data source. I would like to allow users to get reports for the other database. I created a second shared data source for the second database. Modifying the reports to use this second data source results in reports as expected. Because the RDLs are the same, except for the data source, and because I don't want to maintain what are basically duplicate reports, I'm looking for a way to dynamically switch data sources, depending on user input. Is there an easy means of accomplishing this? An existing solution would be best. Barring that, can the RDL's data source be parametrized? Or, can the RDS's connection string be parametrized?

  I need to build an AJAX application against our MS SQL Server database for my company. the app has to have user permissions and reporting and is pretty complex. I am really under the gun in terms of time. The company that I work for needs the app for an important project launch. A colleague/friend of mine in a different company recommended that I look at a product from Alpha Software called Alpha Five v10 with Codeless AJAX. He has told me that he has used it extensively and that it saves him a "serious boat load of time" and he says that he has not run into limitations because you can also write your own JavaScript or you wire in JQERY.   I need to build some sort of a custom CMS for a client of ours. These are some of the functional requirements: Must be able to manage the list of Pages in the site Each Page can contain a number of ColumnGroups A ColumnGroup is nothing more than a list of Columns in a certain ColumnGroupLayout. For example: "one column taking up the entire width of the page", "two columns each taking up half of the width", ... Each Column can contain a number ContentBlocks Examples of a ContentBlock are: TextBlock, NewsBlock, PictureBlock, ... ContentBlocks can be given a certain sorting within a Column A ContentBlock can be put in different Columns so that content can be reused without having to be duplicated. My first quick draft of how this could look like in C# code (we're using ASP.NET 4.0 to develop the CMS) can be found at the bottom of my question. One of the technical requirements is that it must be as easy as possible to add new types of ContentBlocks to the CMS. So I would like model everything as flexible as possible. Unfortunately, I'm already stuck at trying to figure out how the database should look like. One of the problems I'm having has to do with sorting different types of ContentBlocks in a Column. I guess each type of ContentBlock (like TextBlock, NewsBlock, PictureBlock, ...) should have it's own table in the database because each has it's own different fields. A TextBlock might only have a field called Text whereas a NewsBlock might have fields for the Text, the Summary, the PublicationDate, ... Since one Column can have ContentBlocks located in different tables, I guess I'll have to create a many-to-many association for each type of ContentBlock. For example: ColumnTextBlocks, ColumnNewsBlocks and ColumnPictureBlocks. The problem I have with this setup is the sorting of the different ContentBlocks in a column. This could be something like this: TextBlock NewsBlock TextBlock TextBlock PictureBlock Where do I store the sorting number? If I store them in the associaton tables, I'll have to update a lot of tables when changing the sorting order of ContentBlocks in a Column. Is this a good approach to the problem? Basically, my question is: What is the best way to model this keeping in mind that it should be easy to add new types of ContentBlocks? My next question is: What ORM can deal with that kind of modeling? To be honest, we are ORM-virgins at work. I have been reading a bit about Linq-to-SQL and NHibernate, but we have no experience with them. Because of the IList in the Column class (see code below) I think we can rule out Linq-to-SQL, right? Can NHibernate handle the mapping of data from many different tables to one IList? Also keep in mind that this is just a very small portion of the domain. Other parts are Users belonging to a certain UserGroup having certain Permissions on Pages, ColumnGroups, Columns and ContentBlocks. • NOOB Memory Problem - EXC_BAD_ACCESS

  I have been banging my head against the wall for a couple days and need some help. I have a feeling that I am doing something really silly here, but I cannot find the issue. This is the controller for a table view. I put the SQL in line to simplify it as part of the troubleshooting of this error. Normally, it would be in an accessor method in a model class. It gets through the SQL read just fine. Finds the two objects, loads them into the todaysWorkout array and then builds the cells for the table view. The table view actually comes up on the scree and then it throws the EXC_BAD_ACCESS. • How do quickly search through a .csv file in Python

  I'm reading a 6 million entry .csv file with Python, and I want to be able to search through this file for a particular entry. Are there any tricks to search the entire file? Should you read the whole thing into a dictionary or should you perform a search every time? I tried loading it into a dictionary but that took ages so I'm currently searching through the whole file every time which seems wasteful. Could I possibly utilize that the list is alphabetically ordered? (e.g. if the search word starts with "b" I only search from the line that includes the first word beginning with "b" to the line that includes the last word beginning with "b") I'm using import csv. (a side question: it is possible to make csv go to a specific line in the file? I want to make the program start at a random line) Edit: I already have a copy of the list as an .sql file as well, how could I implement that into Python?

I would have thought that it would be defined in your web/app server using JNDI and then look up the JNDI reference in your Java code? The resource-ref definition seems a bit redundant to me and I can't think of when it might be useful.   Hi, I am supplying a batch script to create a DSN connection in the user computer before they start to use my application. I am using this in a .bat file. ODBCConf ConfigSysDSN "SQL Server" "DSN=CONNAME|SERVER=PCNAME\INSTANCENAME But I want to make sure they will be able to connect to the database, considering the fact that proper drivers may not be installed in their systems. So, is there any way to check the connection from the same batch file and inform the user if something unable to connect to the database? thanks.

  Hi all. I believe we're moving to Oracle Apex for future development. I've read about Oracle Apex on wikipedia and it's pro and con. It seem to me the con outweigh the pro but maybe I'm wrong. I get the sense that Oracle Apex is for DBA with little or no programing knowledge to setup a web app quickly sort like MS Access for none programmer. If you have Oracle Apex working experience, can you share your though? From wikipedia's entry, it doesn't seem like you need to know any programming language at all but just the PL/SQL? edit: Is Oracle Apex scalable? Can it handle traffic like Facebook's size? Thank. • What are some good design patterns for CRUD?

  I am working with a number of data entities which can be created, read, updated and deleted, and I find myself writing more or less the same code for them. For example, I need to sometimes output data as JSON, and sometimes in a table format. I am finding myself writing 2 different types of view to export the data to. Also, the creation of those entities within DB usually differs just by the SQL statements and the input parameters. I am thinking of creating a strategy pattern to represent different 'contexts'. For example, the read() method of an AJAX context will be to return the data as JSON. However, I wonder if others have deal with this problem beforehand and will like to know what design patterns are usually use for CRUD operations.

  I am inserting the following characters into my DB: ?? / ?? This is the meta tag on the page that is inserting the characters: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> I have altered all the columns in my table that is holding the characters to be utf8_unicode_ci The foreign characters show up like so in the DB: 汉字 / 漢字 When I use a sql statement to display those foreign characters on a page, they display correctly again as: ?? / ?? I am guessing I have some setting that is not correct in my DB, since it stores it correctly, but does not display it correctly. What can i do to make the foreign language characters to display correctly in my DB?

  Hello, I've been working on writing a SQL statement to create a MySQL database with several default options, including default character set and default collate. Is it possible to add syntax to make the default engine type for tables in this database to be innodb? I've been looking through the MySQL manual for v.5.1 and I've found the statement 'ENGINE=innodb' which would be appended to a CREATE TABLE statement... but I haven't found anything related to a CREATE DATABASE statement. Is there a normal way to do this as part of the database creation, or does it need to be specified on a table-by-table basis? Thanks, Monte

It's not a probper DB file, but a class with format as follows: DataBase.Nodes.Data=[[] for i in range(1,1000)] f.e. this DataBase is all together something like few thousands rows. Fisrt question - is the way I'm doing efficient, or is it better to use SQL, or any other "proper" DB, which I've never used actually. And the main question - I'd like to save my DataBase class with all record, and then re-open it with Python in another session. Is that possible, what tool should I use? cPickle - it seems to be only for strings, any other? In matlab there's very useful functionality named save workspace - it saves all Your variables to a file that You can open at another session - this would be vary useful in python!
