  • How do I convert a video to GIF using ffmpeg, with reasonable quality?

    I'm converting .flv movie to .gif file with ffmpeg. ffmpeg -i input.flv -ss 00:00:00.000 -pix_fmt rgb24 -r 10 -s 320x240 -t 00:00:10.000 output.gif It works great, but output gif file has a very law quality. Any ideas how can I improve quality of converted gif?   • Proper line-ending for an open-source PHP project

    What is the proper line-ending preferences for an open-source web project? Obviously it includes source code of PHP, HTML, CSS and Javascript. The source code is managing via Github now, and there are Windows (8 & 7), Linux (Ubuntu) and OSX developers inside the team, which means all the major operating systems. P.S. We are using "Windows" CRLF line-ending, plus "UTF-8 without BOM" right now, without facing any problem, however I think it might be better to use "*nix/OSX" LF style. I heard some stories about the problems that caused by the additional "CR" on Linux or OS X.

HFM.NET shows that I should be getting a certain amount of bonus credit, but somebody pointed out that it is only a prediction. How can I check the amount of actual bonus credited to my account for each completed unit?

  • How to find process that's using 100% of CPU

    As i'm looking at htop and top i see that my processor usage is 100% allways. But i can not see any process that is using that much CPU. Htop shows me only 1-2 processes that use around 5% cpu time. Is there a way to find the processes that use that much cpu time?   • installing and running google-chrome on an old Ubuntu 7.10 legacy system

    I am trying to get google-chrome to work on Ubuntu 7.10. I installed it with --force-depends and got it to install, but now when I try to run it, I get this error: /usr/bin/google-chrome: error while loading shared libraries: libnss3.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Is there a way to still get google-chrome to load even without this dependency satisfied? This is an old system that needs to keep this old 7.10 Ubuntu version and I would like to have google-chrome if possible installed, even if it means no sound or other features that are not compatible.

  • Failing Windows Updates with Error Code 800719e4

    On a number of Vista machines I have now come across the same error - when installing updates everything works fine, until it after it reboots and the rolls back during step 3. On all occasions (where a simple retry hasn't worked) the error code has been 800719e4. On my own laptop I have so far tried the following:- Installed the updates one by one manually - I started on the smallest and one by one have worked towards the largest one which has left me with "Security Update for Windows (KB2286198)" that refuses to install. Renamed all the files in "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS" to "xxx.old" where xxx was the original name with windows update turned off - no change Renamed all the folders in "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" in the same manner - no change Attempted to install it manually "Windows6.0-KB2286198-x86.msu" - no change Tried to un-install IE8 - doesn't work, rolls back at the end (Installing the IE9 Beta when it launched was what alerted me to the issue on this laptop) Ran a "Fix It" thing from the Microsoft Website - no help (Can't find the link now). Tried to recover from the disk - but alas my laptop only has a recovery partition (and was unservice packed original). Ran with nothing running on startup, and only MS services - again no change. Google is being useless with a load of posts trying to get me to call a telephone number with letters in (presumably an American number) The error code appears to mean error log full but no one has any idea which log!   • Tail the filename, not the file

    In UNIX (OS X BSD to be precise), I have a "tail -f" command on a log file. From time to time I want to delete this log file so I can more easily review it in my text editor. I delete the file, and then my program recreates it after new activity. However, my tail command (and anything else that was watching the old log file) doesn't update; it's still watching the old, deleted log file. I think I understand why this is (file names simply being pointers to blocks of file data). I'd like to know how I can work around this. Ideally, my tail command (and anything else I point to the file) would be able to read the data from the new file when the file name has been deleted and recreated. How would I do this?

    History: I got a tiny shiny plugserver which I want to plug to my ADSL router (or however you want to call it) on one end (eth0), and the other end (eth1) I want to run a dhcp server for my LAN. ATM I am stuck with getting LAN to work. OS is fedora 12.     Hello there, after reading the announcements about Mac OS X "Lion" and Apples political decision, I've had enough. I'm a longtime Apple User since 1992, have always felt at home there, but am trying to switch to alternative Operating System since a year. I've also been working with Unix machines since 2001, so I'm looking in one of the free Unices or a Linux. Since I last looked at the desktop in 2002 choke much has changed, it seems. So I'm lost once more in the war between desktop environments and software. To be honest: I don't care what it's name is, I want to get my job done. Here's what I set me as landmark for an operating system/software to be considered: Has to be atleast four years old Has to supply security updates for current release for atleast a year Production quality stability for the whole desktop environment (!) No f****g commercial stuff that tends to supply me with privacy invading App Store or Cloud space So far I'm running a MacBook from 2007, 4 Gig memory, 250 Gig disk and I need: IMAPs for Mail since 1995 Webbrowser sic Shell Keeping current with Updates/Upgrades with no more than 5 Minutes spent in entering commands (makes it hard for OpenBSD ;-) ) A desktop filemanger would be nice, but is a bonus. What can you suggest as operating system? The one with the longest support cycles and best chance to survive the next 10 years will win a new user, even sending patches when needed :-) Greets

    I have a remote machine running Ubuntu 11.10 Server, to which I connect via SSH from OS X 10.7.3: Host remote.example.com ForwardX11 yes ForwardX11Trusted yes Sometimes I want to launch a GUI application there (most notably, gitk). But UI is rather slow. Both remote machine and my own Mac have good internet connection. Ping between them is about 55ms, and there is no packet loss. Is there something I can do to speed things up? Setting up some other remote desktop solution is an option, but I'd like to avoid it since I don't need this application very often.

  • KVM in Ubuntu cannot trap Windows7 keyboard shortcut

    I am running Windows7 as a guest OS inside KVM running in Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 Everytime I do Alt+Tab within Windows7, the shortcut is caught by Ubuntu. How can I 'trap' the shortcut to stay within the guest OS? I tried running the guest OS fullscreen but Alt+Tab still escapes. Running guest OS fullscreen with display scaled up seems to trap Alt+Tab within KVM, but somehow guest OS is running very very slowly in that mode. Any idea?

  • udhcpc doesn't assign ip address

    i have a board running linux 2.6.28 and i have one Ethernet interface (eth0) i want dhcp to assign dynamic ip to this interface. i have busybox with udhcpc in the file system and the kernel has the "Pack Socket" enabled so i copied the scripts from "busybox-1.14.1/examples/udhcp" to my board on "/etc/udhcpc/" (i created this directory) and when i run : ifconfig eth0 up the interface is up but without ip address, then running udhcpc -i eth0 -s /etc/udhcpc/sample.script i get the following: note : sample.script contains : "exec /etc/udhcpc/sample.$1" # udhcpc -i eth0 -s /etc/udhcpc/sample.script udhcpc (v1.14.1) started Sending discover... Sending select for 192.168.10.198... Lease of 192.168.10.198 obtained, lease time 691200 but when i check with ifconfig i can see that it didn't assign the ip address to eth0. anyone have an idea why udhcpc didn't assign the ip ? Thanx

  • What precautions should I take once defective RAM has been replaced?

    I recently discovered that my RAM is faulty (MemTest86+). I am waiting for new RAM to be sent to me.  It was through sheer luck that I discovered something was wrong. I was copying a large amount of big files and decided to verify the copies by their checksums. I discovered strange discrepancies, and noticed that checksum computation for the same file was not consistent. Now, this is the only problem I have encountered; no BSOD, no crashes, no errors. In a sense this makes me more worried than if I would have had massive crashes. I have no idea for how long the RAM has been faulty, and I have no idea if corrupt bits have been saved into files on my hard drives. I do know the RAM was fine two months ago (tested it back then). I am a user of Adobe's Lightroom and I am worried that photos or the catalog itself could carry corrupt data. Question: what should I do once new healthy RAM has been installed? Reinstall Windows (I'm using Windows 7, 64 bit)? Is there a risk that I will be presented with nasty surprises in the future if I don't? What about personal files? I have backups of some of the files but for newer files I'm not sure I can even trust the backups. It's going to take me many hard hours to manually replace files with older versions, or compare checksums.

  • Cannot find wireless driver for HP laptop

    I have an HP laptop (model: dv7-1267cl, Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium) and I cannot find the wireless driver for the laptop. I am need of a different version because my wireless connection under Windows is flaky and unreliable. I have problems printing to my wireless printer and logging in to and using several sites like reddit.com, phoenix.edu and facebook.com - I get several "page cannot be displayed" messages while using my wireless connection. I disable my wireless adapter and use an ethernet cable and it all works fine. I also used an Ubuntu Live CD to confirm that there is not a problem with the hardware. This is software/driver issue. The drivers were auto installed by the OS. The Device Manager shows the wireless adapter as Atheros AR5009 802.11 a/g/n WiFi Adapter. I have checked the HP website for my laptop and they do not have wireless drivers listed for that model wireless adapter. I have also checked with atheros.com and I do not see my model adapter on their list of available hardware. Device Manager lists the Hardware ID's for my adapter as: PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002A&SUBSYS_1381103C&REV_01 PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002A&SUBSYS_1381103C PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002A&CC_028000 PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002A&CC_0280 A search for the first Hardware ID turned up this question from experts-exchange.com. tl;dr A driver does not exist for that model adapter.

  • forced reformat without login / and bootcamp

    ok.. im pretty good with stuff like this, but I have a question. I have mac mini with 10.5.(x) on one partition, and bootcamp (windows) on the other. My boss wants me to reformat the whole mac (10.6 (x)), which is usually easy. He does not remember his password to login, which means I cannot log in and allocate the bootcamp back to one partition using Disk Utility, then reformat the whole drive. When I insert the Snow leopard CD, I can only wipe out one partition, my question is: Is there a way to force a wipe out of both drives in the boot sequence? Any help to wipe out this whole drive and do a clean install would be helpful.. Thanks superusers!
