• Why do you like Lisp ?

  Why does Paul Graham advocate Lisp? Why did ITA Software choose Lisp over other High Level languages? Lisp obviously is an advantage for the AI stuff but I don't think Lisp is any faster than Java, C# or as a matter of fact faster than C. Still it is considered as a Hackers language? I am not a master of Lisp but I find it incredibly difficult to understand the advantage one would get in writing Business Software in Lisp.

  Hi all, this week we have been suffering some malicious vulnerability scans to our servers, increasing the load on them, making them nearly unusable. The attack is easy to defend, just blocking the offending ip, but only after discovering it. Is there any form of prevent it? Is it normal that one server becomes nearly unusable due to one of these scans? When I have purchased it, it could open the website : http://stackoverflow.com But, now from last 2 months, I am unable to open this website. :( I have changed my DNS server to 8.8.8.8 & Alternate server to 8.8.4.4. This both are the free google dns servers. But, still facing the same problem.   I recently had problems with my ubuntu partition (after the battery died), I managed to fix them by running ubuntu from usb and run gparted. It worked I can access my files on the partition by running ubuntu from usb. But when I restart the computer, after selecting ubuntu in Grub, I get a black screen with a white underscore. I googled the problem, and tried to solve it by setting nomodeset, but it didn't work. Next I wanted to try to fix Grub using boot-repair, I clicked on 'Recommended repair', it tells me to type the following commands in the terminal: sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda5" apt-get install -fy sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda5" dpkg --configure -a sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda5" apt-get purge -y --force-yes grub-common But when running the second command, I get this error: dpkg: warning: 'sh' not found in PATH or not executable. dpkg: warning: 'rm' not found in PATH or not executable. dpkg: warning: 'tar' not found in PATH or not executable. dpkg: error: 3 expected programs not found in PATH or not executable. Note: root's PATH should usually contain /usr/local/sbin, /usr/sbin and /sbin. I didn't edit /etc/environment (or any other files), this is what it looks like: PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games" RUNNING_UNDER_GDM="yes" I have no idea how to fix this. However, if all search results are now encrypted with HTTPS protocol then how is Google analytics still able to track some (20%) of the organic keywords details? There are still some keywords appearing in my organic keywords section. So how did Google analytics do this tracking? Does it bypass the HTTPS restrictions for the referrer?

  As the title indicates, the maximize, minimize, and close buttons are either not present or not working on my Lubuntu desktop. In fact, it only seems to be Google Chrome that displays the buttons at all, and only the close button works in Chrome, maximize and minimize don't do anything. When I use regular Ubuntu, they're all there just fine but not on Lubuntu. This all seemed to occur after I hooked my netbook up to an external monitor while using Lubuntu. Not sure if that had anything to do with it or not, but it seemed too big of a coincidence to not mention. Any ideas what the cause and a fix might be? Thanks in advance.

The Device Manager shows that LPT1 is present. I have a cable connected between a development board and the PC. The cable converts JTAG pin signals to signals on the parallel port. • Explorer and open file dialog not responding (Vista)

  Any explorer window opened for the first time on my machine causes the explorer window to display the folders tree and folder path in the address bar immediately but the file/folder list pane is blank and the window displays 'Not Responding' in the title bar, this hangs for up to a minute or more. Any file dialog displays 'Not Responding' in the title bar. The files list is eventually displayed after a few seconds or more. Steps to repro: Close all open instances of explorer Windows Key | Run | [enter a folder path such as 'c:\temp'] Or within any app: use a file open / save dialog Once there is at least one open instance of explorer the performance is still fairly poor but not nearly so bad and file lists are displayed in a timely fashion. What I've tried: Cleaned up registry with CCleaner tool, and uninstalled all other unused software Checked nothing unwanted running at startup with Autoruns Removed any ISO burner/recorder/mount software Still to try Get latest version of everything - especially stuff with shell extension behaviour such as TortoiseSVN Anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks alot. Update I'm wondering if this is related, I'll try the hotfix when I get home and report back: KB972685 - FIX:Explorer.exe hangs when using a shell extension written using MFC Update 2 Before I got a chance to try the hotfix it seems one of the above actions fixed this for me; either the removal of IsoRecorder or TortoiseHg (which I was no longer using anyway). Update 3 A similar issue with Explorer.exe has come back since installing TortoiseHg 1.01 :-(

• USB Device Not Recognized

  Ok this one gets a little bit complicated but bare with me :D A client brought her computer in to be fixed about a week ago, she says she tried charging a new phone she bought from china and immediately after her usb keyboard and mouse stopped working (typical). I had a quick look at it but because I did not have time, I did a simple system restore and it seemed as if the issue was fixed. I promptly sent it back to her but a few days back she called saying that the issue has returned. Turns out the computer was riddled with some virus that also corrupted her XP install so I had to format the whole thing(yes I tried repairing). I hoped that the format would fix the keyboard and mouse issue but the whole thing has escalated and the computer will throw the "USB Device not recognized" error when I plug anything into the many usb ports it has. I have installed all the drivers (including the chip set drivers) for the pc and even tried the unplugging from the power for a while trick, still no luck. I am sure it is not a hardware issue, but may be wrong. This is way over my head. Can anyone help? Computer: HP Compaq DC7100, Intel Pentium 4, 512mb RAM OS: Windows XP Professional SP2

• Why didn't 12.04 install?

  Ok, so I've installed Ubuntu many times on my computer.. Normally on the same partition, and WIndows would always delete Ubuntu(I don't know how.. it just happens) if i go away from keyboard during boot and it chooses Windows automatically because I took to long. So i tried to reinstall again, but after the fifth time it wouldn't let me, and told me to check "wubi-12.04-rev266.log". It took a while to find, but when i found it, I had no idea what any of it meant, as I'm no programmer.I first tried this the day Precise Pangolin came out. SO skip ahead 2.5 months, when I finally found this file, and i then got the idea of making a new partition to install Ubuntu on, but I used wubi, like I always did. It didn't look like it would f anything up, so I did it. it went through all the downloads, extracting, etc. Which took about 40 minutes total, then ended with an error message saying to check "wubi-12.04-rev266.log". i did. • Fork bomb protection not working : Amount of processes not limited

Connection to thebe closed by remote host. Is this a bug or why is it ignoring the limit in limits.conf and why is not applying the limit that ulimit -n claims it to be? PS: I really don't think the memory limit is hit before the process limit. This machine has 8GB ram and it was using only 4% of it at the time when I dropped the fork bomb.

When I physically install the card I put it into a purple slot on the motherboard that the old card was in (if I go into the device manager and select properties on the current card it confirms that the slot is a "PCI Slot 16 (PCI bus 2, device 0, function 0)") and boot up the computer but get absolutely no output. The screen that we have registers that it is connected to something (by not displaying the screen it does when the cable is unplugged) but just remains blank, no output at all. I recently took the card to my University and one of my friends who is better with hardware issues than I am tried it in his system and it worked perfectly. No issues whatsoever. I do not have a spec list for his system but I could get one if you need it. If you need any more information on this issue I will be happy to supply you with it as I am starting to get very annoyed with this problem ^_^

• Terminal Services - MS Access Frequently "Not Responding"

  Exposition: We use a program built in MS Access that I serve via Terminal Services. I just installed a new TS Server with a Quad Core 2.6GHz Xeon, 8GB RAM, and 4 SATA drives in a RAID 0. In installed Server 2008 R2 (64bit obviously). It's only role is TS. The problem: With just a few sessions (under 10), I start getting frequent Not Responding messages in each session. When it happens, the users aren't doing anything particularly taxing, just form navigation and simple insert queries. I can live with some stalls, but it is visually jarring in WS08 because the screen goes gray, and it presents a dialog offering to wait or close with some other options. Questions: Any suggestions for improving performance and reducing hangs? Is it possible to disable the dialog (always wait) and screen graying?

• server 2008 sp2 hung not responding with kvm reset as well

  using server 2008 sp2 64bit os standard edition with all updates from ms site. server was hung this morning, resetting kvm did nothing, plugging in another usb mouse on the back did not let the mouse light up red on it's optic end. other machines on the kvm worked fine including the mouse. server is rack mounted 4u supermicro systems or superserver. had to hard power off and restart. any thoughts? i burnt this system in well for a couple of weeks before deploying so it is kind of odd that this happened. any help is greatly appreciated, or if anyone can suggest software to install that can maybe send out the email when something like that goes down. i looked for the minidump but nothing. nothing in the event viewers either. gd

• Windows 7 "Not Responding"

  At my office we've got 2 Dell XPS M1530 laptops. Both have been running up to date installations of Windows 7 with NOD 32 Anti Virus for months now with no problems. Last week however both started freezing with "Not responding" issues every few minutes when browsing the web. It doesn't matter which browser, the latest versions of Firefox, Chrome and IE8 all do the same. After a few minutes the browser "wakes up again" but freezes again very soon. I suspect it's an OS update issue, a driver/OS conflict or something. Anybody got a solution for this?
