• Winxp system context menus blank after last security update

  Because of a CERT advisory of several out-of-band security updates released by MS I did a Critical Updates pass on my WinXP Pro SP3 machine. I now have the situation where it seems that all of my WinXP-generated menus come up with all items black. If I wave the cursor over the menu, the items will update as they become active (go blue) and then update correctly (to black-text-on-white-background) as they go non-active. Separators (which never get a hover event) stay black. App-level context menus seem to work fine (Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.) with the exception of Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer, which both exhibit this behavior on both their context menus and on their menu bar drop down menus. I'm assuming that's true because they are all using the same library code. Thoughts? Fixes? Help!

• Toshiba G20-120 raid / sata drivers for integration with winxp or windows 7 installation

  The title pretty much says it all. Does anyone know where they can be downloaded ? Or how to turn off in bios sata for hdd's ? Bios is very simple, and I just don't see the option.   Hi, I have Server1 Win2008 Storage Server Running DFS Access-based enumeration - off Offline settings - disabled Workstation1 WinXP SP3 32bit Workstation2 WinXP SP2 64bit I have a shared folder on Server1 on the DFS share. Workstation1 can see all files and folders. Workstation2 does not. I have tested with multiple WinXP 64bit PCs and the same files across these machines do not show up. Going directly to the files via the address bar works.

• Thunderbird/Firefox with shared profiles (Lubuntu+WinXP)

  I use Thunderbird and Firefox both on WinXP and Lubuntu 11.10. The profile folders are on the NTFS-partition of Windows and I'm sure that I've edited the profile paths correctly. Windows doesn't show any problems but Lubuntu shows the error dialog saying that another instance of Thunderbird/Firefox is already running..." The funny thing is, that as soon as I've opened the profile folders in my explorer, firefox and thunderbird can be started. I don't have to change any files or something (Have made some experiments with .parentlock) Do you have an idea how I could solve this problem, as I don't want to open the profile folders after every reboot. • No boot record when installing 13.04 from USB on WinXP

  I'm replacing WinXP with 13.04 on an older PC using wubi.exe on a USB stick. I had no problem changing the BIOS on another system that was a bit newer but when I change the settings on the older PC to boot from USB, I get a DOS message saying "Searching for boot record...Not found" & asked to try again. I don't have the ability to boot from a live CD so is there a reason why I can boot from a USB on a newer computer but can't from an older one? Both have options to choose to boot from USB, but the older one can find no boot record. The system was built on 12/13/01 by American Megatrends. • How to migrate WinXP from failing old HD to new one

  Following this issue, we have all our important data backed up now. I also bought and installed a new replacement hard disk (WD 160GB PATA) as secondary (slave) drive. I created two primary NTFS partitions on it: a 40 GB system partition, and a 110GB data partition. In theory I could start reinstalling WinXP from scratch on the new system partition, then copying over all user data from the old drive to the new data partition. Once this is done, I could even throw away the old drive, or keep it just to see what happens. (Note: I don't want to clone the whole drive as it contains a dual boot setup with an old Linux installation which I don't need anymore, and anyway, a fresh reinstall would do WinXP good to get rid of many years' clutter.) However, I am lazy :-) The old HD is still functioning, the problem has not manifested again since. So I feel there is no need to hurry with a complete OS reinstall. What I don't know though is whether I will be able to install WinXP on the new system partition at a later stage without affecting the contents of the data partition on the same drive. If this is possible, I can just move over all our data to the new data partition to have it safe, then continue running WinXP from the old drive as long as it works. Does anyone see any problems/risks with this plan?

• What is the Xbox360's D3DRS_VIEWPORTENABLE equivalent on WinXP D3D9?

  I posted this on StackOverlow, but of course it should be posted here. I am maintaining a multiplatform codebase for Xbox360 and WinXP. I am seeing an issue on the XP side that appears to be related to D3DRS_VIEWPORTENABLE on the Xbox360 version not having an equivalent on WinXP D3D9. This article had an interesting idea, but the only way to construct an identity matrix is to supply negative numbers to D3DVIEWPORT9::X and D3DVIEWPORT9::Height, but they are unsigned numbers. (I tried to put in negative numbers anyway, but nothing interesting happened.) So, how does one emulate the behavior of D3DRS_VIEWPORTENABLE under WinXP/D3D9? (For clarity, the result I'm seeing is that a 2d screen-aligned quad works fine on Xbox360 but is offset/stretched on WinXP. In fact, the (0, 0) starts in the center of the screen on WinXP instead of in the lower-left corner like on the Xbox360 as a result of applying the viewport transform.) Update: I didn't have an Xbox360 devkit at the time I wrote up this question, but I've since gotten one. I commented out the disabling of the D3DRS_VIEWPORTENABLE state, and the exact same behavior resulted on the Xbox360 as on the WinXP build. So, there must be some DirectX magic to bridge the gap here for emulating D3DRS_VIEWPORTENABLE being turned off on WinXP.

• WinXP keyboard input repeat rate problem

  I have problem similar to http://superuser.com/questions/33981/problems-with-kvm-switch-and-keyboard-repeat-rate-on-windows-xp: When I press and hold some key it's repeated random number of times, after that repeat stops and I need to release key and press it again to make repeat continue. If there's simultaneous sound playback and repeat is stopped, sound's stuck while I hold key with unpleasant drumming as if there's some audio problem. This issue is reproducible in WinXP Safe Mode. On the same config under Linux there's no issue. • WinXp display driver incorrect to boot iso ubuntu 12.04

  I have Windows Xp on a HP Pavilion w/AMD Athlon 64 processor 3300+. I have downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 iso desktop. When trying to run Ubuntu, I get a line that says "sis 630 buss not detected. It continues and makes a blue screen, then says low graphics mode only and has a white screen. The HP has display adaptor sis 760, driver= 6.14.10.3671, 4/20/2005. I'm not familiar with ubuntu because I've never got it started as yet. Can the Ubuntu install process be changed to accept my sis 760 driver? I'm trying to make a Live CD(dvd) to run Ubuntu.

• 0x0000007b WinXP in VirtualBox with no Admin access on source drive

  I have a physical drive with an installation of WinXP-32 which I have made a clone of using SysInternals disk2vhd. I have no admin rights on this installation. I have tried to boot this VHD in VirtualBox, however it blue screens on 0x0000007b. I have researched this and apparently the cause is that Windows doesn't like the IDE controller changing. I have tried all the available controllers in VirtualBox, but they all produce the same result. There is a Microsoft KB article which describes a method involving loading a .reg file and extracting some sys files from a CAB. This method apparently works well for many people with this problem, however it will not work for me as I don't have admin rights on the WinXP installation. Is there anything I can do in this case? Is there any way of loading the .reg file outside the OS? or perhaps doing a repair using the WinXP CD? Even though I have no admin rights on the source drive installation of Windows, I do obviously have full access to the file system directly on the drive and also in the VHD itself.

• Prevent Win7 boot loader from taking over the WinXP boot loader

  My setup: 1 physical hard drive (500gb divided equally into 2 partitions) Windows XP Partition (Current OS) Empty Partition where I will be installing Windows 7 My question is how do I prevent the Windows7 boot loader from taking over my WindowsXP boot loader when installing the new OS ? The reason I am asking is because I already have a ghosted backup of my WinXP partition and if I ever need to restore my xp partition using that backup, would it not overwrite the Windows7 boot loader that was placed in the XP partition with the one from the backup, thus making windows 7 unable to boot. Also what would happen if I decided to delete the Windows XP partition altogether somewhere down the road and along with it the Win7 boot loader that was placed there, wouldn't that cause the system not to boot at all.. To avoid these issues, I simply want to make sure that BOTH the Win7 and WinXP boot loaders are available on their respective partitions and they do not interfere with each other in any way. • WinXP: File Record Segment nnnn is unreadable?

  I'm pretty sure that the drive is toast, except for the fact that this error is only showing up on one partition (it's out of a Dell computer, and has a couple of Dell partitions, which boot and work fine.) I've already purchased another hard drive, and re-installed WinXP, but when I re-connect this drive and reboot, I'm getting thousands of these errors. Is there any chance of recovering any files off this? Should I prevent XP from trying to resolve the problems?

• Typing lag in WinXP

  I'm working on a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop that has a mysterious lag in typing. You enter keystrokes and it takes a while to show up on the screen. WinXP Pro was freshly installed and the behavior is still here. Here is the weird part... I've tested the computer with the full Dell diagnostic suite, Prime95 (using UBCD4Win), and Memtest86. Everything checks out as fine. If I run a LiveCD such as UBCD4Win or Ubuntu (9.04?) then there is no typing issue. This is causing me lots of aggravation. Thoughts?

• Can't download updates for reinstalled Office 2000 on WinXP OS "expected version not found" error message

  I replaced HD and reinstalled WinXP Pro and successfully downloaded all of the service packs and security updates. I've reinstalled my licensed version of Office 2000 (upgrade version from Office 97). The software installs and is functional; but when trying to install updates SR-1 or SR-1a or any individual security update I get error message "expected version of product not found". Microsoft no longer provides support for this legacy version of office. I can't find any support documents in Microsoft's database that addresses this issue. This is my sister's computer and I've already come out-of-pocket $100 for hardware (not counting the $$hours of labor). She only uses MS Word for minimal correspondence. No desire to spend $100+ for new version of Office. I would greatly appreciate any suggested fixes for this problem.

  Based on Sharing Files between CentOS 6 and Windows Systems with Samba I am able to follow until section of "Accessing Samba Shares". however, my system is WinXP and I don't see CentOS 6 icon at all. In my left panel of explorer, I only see "My network places". For section "Accessing Windows Shares from CentOS 6", after I click workgroup, I only see a localhost icon. When I click this icon, I see "unable to mount location" error from CentOS. BTW: I have set the shared folder within WMWare Player 6.0. Whatelse I have to do in order to make the shared folder work?   I had a working subversion server which used the passwd file which stores passwords in clear text. My requirements changed so that passwords now need to be encrypted. I did everything according to the book to use SASL, or so I believe, but now only the linux command line can authenticate. My OSX users, which also use command line, and my WinXp users, which use TortoiseSVN get errors. Linux versions are 1.6.11. OSX versions are 1.6.17. I know the latest version is 5.xx... but apparently with some new software we're having installed we have to use version 4 After a bit of googling i can see that the latest version is... Build 4.1.10329.0 Released May 8, 2012 We have a mix of Win7 64-bit machines and WinXP 32-bit machines. Q: Is there a different version for each OS or the same one fits all. • WinXP password messed up after reset

  I changed my winXP logon password - but could not get in. Obviously I made the some mistake twice... caps lock or something but couldn't get the password. So I booted into safe mode, when into Users and changed the password. Now I when I restart I can get in at logon with my new password, but the standard screensaver - which used to be the same as my user logon - now is something different. I think it's still the previous one which I couldn't get right. Now when I go into Users (not in safe mode) and try and change the password I can't. It won't accept my new user logon which works fine when logging on. I think this too is still the previous one which I couldn't get right. How can I definitely reset the password so it works at logon, in the control panel/users, and the screensaver?

• Error loading operating system WinXP Pro

  So im getting the error "Error loading operating system" when the computer tries to boot to a fresh install of WinXP Pro. To get to this point, I: Shrunk the only partition with Gparted to 33GB Copied the partition to the end of the 200GB drive Enlarged the first one to fill the space Formatted the first partition to NTFS Set the first partition to boot, tagged the latter to hidden, removed boot flag This was done all under Hiren's BootCD. Now this is where it goes down the drain. I installed XP Pro SP1a from its CD, and chose to quick format the partition. Now after the OS was installed, I can't start XP without using the default menu action from Hiren's BootCD. All I am greeted with is the "error loading operating system" message. I tried to use the XP recovery to fixboot, fixmbr and bootcfg /rebuild (dont remember if the command was like this, anyway the 3 suggested commands). This did nothing. What am I missing here?

  I have 3 computers with WinXP x86, and 3 Cisco 1800 series routers. I'm trying to create a workgroup so that the 3 computers can share files with eachother. They can ping eachother (without any internet connection), and the routers setup is correctly configured (with interfaces, ip adresses, and ports). But none of the computers can see eachother, even though they are on the same network. My first question would be - can it be done the way it is currently configured - and, if yes, how, or can anyone point me in the right direction?

  i am trying to establish a VPN Connection in my GuestOS. But i get a timeout every Time. The Host : Win 7 The Guest: WinXp Software: VM-Workstation 8 The GuestOS is bridged to the Host network and has his own IP. The normal Connection in the GuestOS works fine but when i try to establish the VPN (no Programm used , just simple Windows VPN) i get an timeout? But i can establish the VPN from the Host without any problems... Any Ideas here? Thanks Ps:(If it matters: The VPN is PPTP from StrongVPN)
