  • Firefox zombie process problem

    - by user52987
When I start Firefox a Firefox zombie process starts sometimes (not always) and then goes away after a few seconds (stays sometimes until firefox is closed). This problem occurs with four computers (2 laptops and 2 desktops running ubuntu 10.04, 11.10, precise beta 1 and beta 2) I also have this same problem with other distros like Fedora 16, Linux mint 12, Debian 6 and Arch Linux. Thunderbird is also affected by this zombie process problem. Firefox safe mode does NOT help! Can someone help me to fix this problem? If you are affected by this bug please click "this bug affects me" on launchpad. My bug report (screenshot included)

  • Is there any way to kill a zombie process without reboot?

    - by Pedram
Is there any way to kill a zombie process without reboot? Here is how it happens: I wanted to download a 12GB torrent. After adding the .torrent file, transmission turned into a zombie process.I tried ktorrent too.Same behavior. Finally I could download the file using µTorrent but after closing the program, it turns into a zombie as well. I tried using kill skill and pkill with different options and -9 signal but no success. In some answers in web I found out killing the parent can kill the zombie, but killing wine didn't help either. Is there another way? • Nagios Creating lots of zombie process

    - by pradeepchhetri
    In my monitoring box, I have lots of zombie process created by nagios and they gets remove quickly also. I am using active checks to perform monitoring of my servers. I accumulated the defunct processes created using the following command: $ top -d 0.25 -b -n 20 > topout.txt This collected the output of top with 0.25s delay 20 times. I did grep on the topout.txt for the defunct process. $ cat topout.txt | grep defunct I get the following output. 8957 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 6.0 0.0 0:00.02 nagios <defunct> 8951 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 3.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 8954 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 3.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 8945 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 8946 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 8980 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9000 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 nagios <defunct> 9024 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 7.0 0.0 0:00.02 nagios <defunct> 9025 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 3.5 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9040 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 3.1 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9086 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9087 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9123 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 6.1 0.0 0:00.02 nagios <defunct> 9126 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 3.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9131 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 3.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9091 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.05 nagios <defunct> 9111 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9119 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9118 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9151 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 2.9 0.0 0:00.02 nagios <defunct> 9153 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 2.9 0.0 0:00.02 nagios <defunct> 9150 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9164 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 3.5 0.0 0:00.02 nagios <defunct> 9171 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 3.5 0.0 0:00.02 nagios <defunct> 9154 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9156 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9163 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9167 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9178 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 3.8 0.0 0:00.02 nagios <defunct> 9174 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9179 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> 9182 nagios 20 0 0 0 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 nagios <defunct> Can somebody help me in finding out the reason of these zombie processes and how i can prevent these zombie processes ?

  • Example of DOD design (on a generic Zombie game)

    - by Jeffrey
I can't seem to find a nice explanation of the Data Oriented Design for a generic zombie game (it's just an example, pretty common example). Could you make an example of the Data Oriented Design on creating a generic zombie class? Is the following good? Zombie list class: class ZombieList { GLuint vbo; // generic zombie vertex model std::vector<color>; // object default color std::vector<texture>; // objects textures std::vector<vector3D>; // objects positions public: unsigned int create(); // return object id void move(unsigned int objId, vector3D offset); void rotate(unsigned int objId, float angle); void setColor(unsigned int objId, color c); void setPosition(unsigned int objId, color c); void setTexture(unsigned int, unsigned int); ... void update(Player*); // move towards player, attack if near } Example: Player p; Zombielist zl; unsigned int first = zl.create(); zl.setPosition(first, vector3D(50, 50)); zl.setTexture(first, texture("zombie1.png")); ... while (running) { // main loop ... zl.update(&p); zl.draw(); // draw every zombie } Or would creating a generic World container that contains every action from bite(zombieId, playerId) to moveTo(playerId, vector) to createPlayer() to shoot(playerId, vector) to face(radians)/face(vector); and contains: std::vector<zombie> std::vector<player> ... std::vector<mapchunk> ... std::vector<vbobufferid> player_run_animation; ... be a good example? Whats the proper way to organize a game with DOD?

  • init never reaping zombie/defunct processes

    - by st9
Hi, On my Fedora Core 9 webserver with kernel 2.6.18.8, init isn't reaping zombie processes. This would be bearable if it wasn't for the process table eventually reaching an upper limit where no new processes can be allocated. • Kill a 10 minute old zombie process in linux bash script

    - by Steve
I've been tinkering with a regex answer by yukondude with little success. I'm trying to kill processes that are older than 10 minutes. I already know what the process IDs are. I'm looping over an array every 10 min to see if any lingering procs are around and need to be killed. Anybody have any quick thoughts on this? • defunct dbus-daemon zombie freezes login for 30 seconds

    - by oldenburgb
I'm running Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS (Precise Pangolin) and noticed a 30 second delay whenever i log into my server via ssh or perform any kind of login via sudo on that machine. I can provoke immediate execution by killing the defunct dbus-daemon showing up during the delay: output of ps fax |grep dbus 19222 ? Ss 0:00 dbus-daemon --system --fork --activation=upstart 19752 ? Z 0:00 \_ [dbus-daemon] <defunct> taping into the dbus using dbus-monitor --system i'm getting: signal sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> dest=(null destination) serial=7 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameOwnerChanged string ":1.4" string "" string ":1.4" each login. Stopping the dbus service eliminates this problem but probably causes many other... I'm not running xorg on the machine but the packages are present for X11 forwarding capabilities. I've ruled out the common motd script delay and ssh "UseDNS no" fixes one finds when looking up login delay issues. Many thanks in advance for any help with this, it's been driving me crazy ;-)

  • Perl wrapper to start daemon leaves zombie when run by cron

    - by leonstr
I've got a Perl script to start a process as a daemon. But when I call it from cron I'm left with a defunct process. I've stripped this down to a minimal script, I'm starting 'tail' as a placeholder for the daemon: use POSIX "setsid"; $SIG{CHLD} = 'IGNORE'; my $pid = fork(); exit(0) if ($pid > 0); (setsid() != -1) || die "Can't start a new session: $!"; open (STDIN, '/dev/null') or die ("Cannot read /dev/null: $!\n"); my $logout = "logger -t test"; open (STDOUT, "|$logout") or die ("Cannot pipe stdout to $logout: $!\n"); open (STDERR, "|$logout") or die ("Cannot pipe stderr to $logout: $!\n"); my $cmd = "tail -f"; exec($cmd); exit(1); I run this with cron and end up with: root 18616 18615 0 11:40 ? 00:00:00 [test.pl] <defunct> root 18617 1 0 11:40 ? 00:00:00 tail -f root 18618 18617 0 11:40 ? 00:00:00 logger -t test root 18619 18617 0 11:40 ? 00:00:00 logger -t test As far as I can tell it's the piping to logger that it doesn't like, if I send STDOUT and STDERR to /dev/null the problem doesn't occur. Am I doing something wrong or is this just not possible? (CentOS 5.8) Thanks, leonstr

  • how to kill (or avoid) zombie processes with subprocess module

    - by Dave
When I kick off a python script from within another python script using the subprocess module, a zombie process is created when the subprocess "completes". I am unable to kill this subprocess unless I kill my parent python process. Is there a way to kill the subprocess without killing the parent? I know I can do this by using wait(), but I need to run my script with no_wait().

  • BDD for C# NUnit

    - by mjezzi
I've been using a home brewed BDD Spec extension for writing BDD style tests in NUnit, and I wanted to see what everyone thought. Does it add value? Does is suck? If so why? Is there something better out there? Here's the source: https://github.com/mjezzi/NSpec There are two reasons I created this To make my tests easy to read. To produce a plain english output to review specs. Here's an example of how a test will look: -since zombies seem to be popular these days.. Given a Zombie, Peson, and IWeapon: namespace Project.Tests.PersonVsZombie { public class Zombie { } public interface IWeapon { void UseAgainst( Zombie zombie ); } public class Person { private IWeapon _weapon; public bool IsStillAlive { get; set; } public Person( IWeapon weapon ) { IsStillAlive = true; _weapon = weapon; } public void Attack( Zombie zombie ) { if( _weapon != null ) _weapon.UseAgainst( zombie ); else IsStillAlive = false; } } } And the NSpec styled tests: public class PersonAttacksZombieTests { [Test] public void When_a_person_with_a_weapon_attacks_a_zombie() { var zombie = new Zombie(); var weaponMock = new Mock<IWeapon>(); var person = new Person( weaponMock.Object ); person.Attack( zombie ); "It should use the weapon against the zombie".ProveBy( spec => weaponMock.Verify( x => x.UseAgainst( zombie ), spec ) ); "It should keep the person alive".ProveBy( spec => Assert. That( person.IsStillAlive, Is.True, spec ) ); } [Test] public void When_a_person_without_a_weapon_attacks_a_zombie() { var zombie = new Zombie(); var person = new Person( null ); person.Attack( zombie ); "It should cause the person to die".ProveBy( spec => Assert. That( person.IsStillAlive, Is.False, spec ) ); } } You'll get the Spec output in the output window: [PersonVsZombie] - PersonAttacksZombieTests When a person with a weapon attacks a zombie It should use the weapon against the zombie It should keep the person alive When a person without a weapon attacks a zombie It should cause the person to die 2 passed, 0 failed, 0 skipped, took 0.39 seconds (NUnit 2.5.5).

  • Removing zombie locks in Subversion

    - by ThatBlairGuy
I'm trying to find a way to remove zombie locks using the Subversion command line tools. The eventual goal is to do this from a hook script, but I haven't been able to work out the command line to use when you only have a physical repository path. (Using svnadmin rmlocks only seems to work for locks which exist in the HEAD revision.) Ideally, I'd like to do this via the post-commit hook script using the command line tools. (I'm aware of the python script for this purpose, but we'd prefer not to install python on that server for this single use.) We're a .NET shop, so creating a tool with the SharpSVN library is also a possibility, but the only unlock capability there appears to be in the SVNClient class. So it's really two questions: Is there a way to do this with the command line tools? If not, is there a way to do it from SharpSVN? (Or perhaps another library?)

  • Trac FastCGI + Python on dreamhost leaves zombie python running

    - by Katsuke
    Hello there, Recently I installed trac in one of my dreamhost domains. I followed the instructions of http://trac.mlalonde.net/wiki/CreamyTrac and everything worked perfectly. At least i thought that was the case. After a few days, i started to notice that i was getting random 500 pages. I quickly checked the error log, and found a bunch of: [Fri Apr 16 14:35:34 2010] [error] [client *.*.*.*] Premature end of script headers: dispatch.fcgi [Fri Apr 16 14:35:54 2010] [error] [client *.*.*.*] Premature end of script headers: dispatch.fcgi, referer: http://www.trac.****.com/login [Fri Apr 16 16:05:58 2010] [error] [client *.*.*.*] Premature end of script headers: dispatch.fcgi, referer: http://www.trac.****.com/timeline The trac instance has very low traffic so it is possible that this might have been triggered faster if there was more use of it. So next step i went to look at top and am amazed by what i see: (this is NOT exactly what i saw, i just reproduced this from memory) 23730 rl_inst 20 0 44516 15m 4012 S 0.0 0.4 0:00.17 python2.4 23731 rl_inst 20 0 44616 15m 4012 S 0.0 0.4 0:03.17 python2.4 23732 rl_inst 20 0 44116 15m 4012 S 0.0 0.4 0:01.17 python2.4 23733 rl_inst 20 0 44826 15m 4012 S 0.0 0.4 0:04.17 python2.4 23734 rl_inst 20 0 44216 15m 4012 S 0.0 0.4 0:02.17 python2.4 23735 rl_inst 20 0 44416 15m 4012 S 0.0 0.4 0:01.17 python2.4 I opened the trac site again and that changed to this: 23730 rl_inst 20 0 44516 15m 4012 S 0.0 0.4 0:00.17 python2.4 23731 rl_inst 20 0 44616 15m 4012 S 0.0 0.4 0:03.17 python2.4 23732 rl_inst 20 0 44116 15m 4012 S 0.0 0.4 0:01.17 python2.4 23733 rl_inst 20 0 44826 15m 4012 S 0.0 0.4 0:04.17 python2.4 23734 rl_inst 20 0 44216 15m 4012 S 0.0 0.4 0:02.17 python2.4 23735 rl_inst 20 0 44416 15m 4012 S 0.0 0.4 0:01.17 python2.4 28378 rl_inst 20 0 2608 1208 1008 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 dispatch.fcgi 28382 rl_inst 20 0 44248 15m 4012 S 0.0 0.4 0:02.19 python2.4 So the dispatch.fcgi was being called correctly and was spawning correctly other python2.4 process. Am on a shared hosting so my processes get killed if they are way too many. So everytime i opened trac 2 new processes spawned and one remained, to the point that dreamhost was killing a random process when i reached my limit. Sometimes killing the python2.4 that actually was rendering the current page. Hence header premature ending, python is gone the .fcgi doesnt know what to do and throws an 500. I found a dirty solution to this. I changed my dispatch.fcgi to contain a line that killed any currently running python2.4 process and then spawn a new one. Since then i dont get any rogues what so ever. But i dont think this is the best solution, calling killall in every fcgi just seems wrong. Anyone has run into this issue and found a cleaner solution? Is there anything that i have overlooked?

  • jQuery UI regenerate (zombie) draggable elements

    - by Rio
Dear all, I'd like to know how to create draggable elements using jQuery UI that once they are dragged and dropped into another container, regenerate the same item. For example, I can drop a button from container A to container B, and once I do that, the same button (a clone) re-emerges in container A. Thanks in advance.

  • How to detect defunct processes on Linux?

    - by Hakan
I have a parent and a child process written in C language. Somewhere in the parent process HUP signal is sent to the child. I want my parent process to detect if the child is dead. But when I send SIGHUP, the child process becomes a zombie. How can I detect if the child is a zombie in the parent process? I try the code below, but it doesn't return me the desired result since the child process is still there but it is defunct. kill(childPID, 0); One more question; can I kill the zombie child without killing the parent? Thanks.

  • Why would VMWare to go defunct? How to recover from/prevent it?

    - by Josh
I am running VMWare Server 2.0.2 (Build 203138) on a dual core Intel i5 with Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS system (kernel 2.6.32-22-server #33-Ubuntu SMP). Disk Subsystem is a software RAID5 array. The system has been set up for a little over a week. For the past 5 days I have been running at leat 3 VMs (Linux and a variety of Windows OSes) with no issues whatsoever. But while I was installing Linux onto a new VM, suddenly all VMs became unresponsive, including the one I was installing to. I could not log in to the VMWare Management Interface, and the system was somewhat unresponsive via SSH. When I looked at top, I saw: top - 16:14:51 up 6 days, 1:49, 8 users, load average: 24.29, 24.33 17.54 Tasks: 203 total, 7 running, 195 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie Cpu(s): 0.2%us, 25.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 74.3%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 8056656k total, 5927580k used, 2129076k free, 20320k buffers Swap: 7811064k total, 240216k used, 7570848k free, 5045884k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 21549 root 39 19 0 0 0 Z 100 0.0 15:02.44 [vmware-vmx] <defunct> 2115 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 1 0.0 170:32.08 [vmware-rtc] 2231 root 21 1 1494m 126m 100m S 1 1.6 892:58.05 /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx -# product=2; 2280 jnet 20 0 19320 1164 800 R 0 0.0 30:04.55 top 12236 root 20 0 833m 41m 34m S 0 0.5 88:34.24 /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx -# product=2; 1 root 20 0 23704 1476 920 S 0 0.0 0:00.80 /sbin/init 2 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.01 [kthreadd] 3 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 [migration/0] 4 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.84 [ksoftirqd/0] 5 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 [watchdog/0] 6 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 [migration/1] The VMWare process for the virtual machine I was installing into became a zombie. Yet, it was still consuming 100% of the CPU time on one of the cores, and I couldn't reach it or any other virtual machines. (I was logged in to one virtual machine over SSH, another via X11, and a third via VNC. All three connections died). When I ran ps -ef and similar commands, I found that the defunct vmware-vmx process had it's parent PID set to init (1). I also used lsof -p 21549 and found that the defunct process had no open files. Yet it was using 100% of CPU time... I was unable to kill any vmware-vmx processes, including the defunct one, even with kill -9. As a last resort to resolve the situation I tried to reboot the box, however shutdown, halt, reboot, and init 6 all failed to reboot/shutdown, even when given appropriate --force settings. ControlAltDel produced a message about rebooting on the console, but the system would not reboot. I had to hard power-cycle the box to resolve the situation. (See my other question, Should I worry about the integrity of my linux software RAID5 after a crash or kernel panic?) What would cause a scenario like this? What else could I have done to resolve it besides a hard reboot? What can I do to prevent such a situation in the future?

  • ADO.NET zombie transaction bug? How to ensure that commands will not be executed on implicit transac

    - by TN
e.g. When deadlock occurs, following SQL commands are successfully executed, even if they have assigned SQL transaction that is after rollback. It seems, it is caused by a new implicit transaction that is created on SQL Server. Someone could expect that ADO.NET would throw an exception that the commands are being executed on a zombie transaction. However, such exception is not thrown. (I think this is a bug in ASP.NET.) Moreover, because of zombie transaction the final Dispose() silently ignores the rollback. Any ideas, how can I ensure that nobody can execute commands on implicit transaction? Or, how to check that transaction is zombie? I found that Commit() and Rollback() check for zombie transaction, however I can call them for a test:) I also found that also reading IsolationLevel will do the check, but I am not sure whether simple calling transaction.IsolationLevel.ToString(); will not be removed by a future optimizer. Or do you know any other safe way invoke a getter (without using reflection or IL emitting)?
