  • Recurssion Question : Revision

    - by stan
    My slides say that A recurssive call should always be on a smaller data structure than the current one There must be a non recurssive option if the data structure is too small You need a wrapper method to make the recurssive method accessible Just reading this from the slides makes no sence, especially seeing as it was a topic from before christmas! Could anyone try and clear up what it means please? Thank you

  • [C++] std::tring manipulation: whitespace, "newline escapes '\'" and comments #

    - by rubenvb
    Kind of looking for affirmation here. I have some hand-written code, which I'm not shy to say I'm proud of, which reads a file, removes leading whitespace, processes newline escapes '\' and removes comments starting with #. It also removes all empty lines (also whitespace-only ones). Any thoughts/recommendations? I could probably replace some std::cout's with std::runtime_errors... but that's not a priority here :) const int RecipeReader::readRecipe() { ifstream is_recipe(s_buffer.c_str()); if (!is_recipe) cout << "unable to open file" << endl; while (getline(is_recipe, s_buffer)) { // whitespace+comment removeLeadingWhitespace(s_buffer); processComment(s_buffer); // newline escapes + append all subsequent lines with '\' processNewlineEscapes(s_buffer, is_recipe); // store the real text line if (!s_buffer.empty()) v_s_recipe.push_back(s_buffer); s_buffer.clear(); } is_recipe.close(); return 0; } void RecipeReader::processNewlineEscapes(string &s_string, ifstream &is_stream) { string s_temp; size_t sz_index = s_string.find_first_of("\\"); while (sz_index <= s_string.length()) { if (getline(is_stream,s_temp)) { removeLeadingWhitespace(s_temp); processComment(s_temp); s_string = s_string.substr(0,sz_index-1) + " " + s_temp; } else cout << "Error: newline escape '\' found at EOF" << endl; sz_index = s_string.find_first_of("\\"); } } void RecipeReader::processComment(string &s_string) { size_t sz_index = s_string.find_first_of("#"); s_string = s_string.substr(0,sz_index); } void RecipeReader::removeLeadingWhitespace(string &s_string) { const size_t sz_length = s_string.size(); size_t sz_index = s_string.find_first_not_of(" \t"); if (sz_index <= sz_length) s_string = s_string.substr(sz_index); else if ((sz_index > sz_length) && (sz_length != 0)) // "empty" lines with only whitespace s_string.clear(); } Some extra info: std::string s_buffer is a class data member, so is std::vector v_s_recipe. Any comment is welcome :)

  • What do people find difficult about C pointers?

    - by Paul
    From the number of questions posted here, it's clear that people have some pretty fundemental issues when getting their heads around pointers and pointer arithmetic. I'm curious to know why. They've never really caused me major problems (although I first learned about them back in the Neolithic). In order to write better answers to these questions, I'd like to know what people find difficult. So, if you're struggling with pointers, or you recently were but suddenly "got it", what were the aspects of pointers that caused you problems?

  • display several items in one row of a listview in android

    - by Sephy
    I don't now if this title is very clear, but I would like to understand how this is possible : And how we can have 2 elements on the same row of the listview, and handle different clicks, as the listview deals with handling the click on a child. Thanks for anyone who could point me in the right direction.

  • is it possible in javascript to create shortcuts with sequence like 123,345 instead of combo?

    - by frankB
    I already used some script to implement the shortcuts in my web page but i was wondering if could be possible to associate some combination not syncronic like Ctrl+X but more like a sequence typing 1..2..3 or any other combination to execute a script... lets assume this example: you have a long list with numbers: you could type 3..5...6, so you can go to the item 356 passing trough the item 3 then 35 then 356 more or less like when you type while selecting a select box i hope it was clear, id not easy to explain...

  • Is there a way to check if a var is using setInterval() ?

    - by chadley
    For instance, I am setting an interval like timer = setInterval(fncName, 1000); and if i go and do clearInterval(timer); it does clear the interval but is there a way to check that it cleared the interval? I've tried getting the value of it while it has an interval and when it doesn't but they both just seem to be numbers.

  • Need help setting up doctrine 2 cascade deletes

    - by jiewmeng
    I am quite confused setting up cascade deletes in Doctrine 2. Here's what my setup looks like I want to setup cascading so that I can do something like $list->getStages()->clear() I tried in Stage class /** * @OneToMany(targetEntity="TaskProgress", mappedBy="stage", cascade={"remove"}) */ protected $taskStages; But that did nothing, I even tried putting the same thing in other classes like List, TaskProgress or Task but nothing seem to work, I may have done it wrong tho ..

  • Enumerating Environment keys with VBScript?

    - by Stabledog
    I need to enumerate the keys in the WScript.Shell.Environment object. It's clear that if you already know the name of the key, you're home free with: Set oShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Debug.WriteLine "PATH=" & oShell.Environment("PATH") ...but if you want to list the keys, it looks like you're out of luck! Is there a secret passageway somewhere?

  • Is "campaign_$" a bad name for a SQL column?

    - by Summer
    PostgreSQL has allowed me to name a column "campaign_$". I like the name because it's short and to the point, and other potential names like "campaign_receipts" seem longer and less clear. BUT, I wonder if I'll eventually regret putting a $ symbol in a column name, either in PHP or in some other distant part of the architecture. Should I just stick to letters and underscores? Thanks!

  • iOS - How to iterate through list of files on website directory

    - by svjim
    On iOS, I am looking for the proper way to return the URLs for a list of files that are in a directory. /images 1.jpg 2.jpg 3.jpg ... I know the URL for the directory and know all the files in the directory will be of type jpeg. It is not clear to me how to properly format the NSURLRequest to return the list of files in the images directory. Once the list is returned, I will iterate through it to return the individual images.

  • Downsides to immutable objects in Java?

    - by parkr
    The advantages of immutable objects in Java seem clear: consistent state automatic thread safety simplicity You can favour immutability by using private final fields and constructor injection. But, what are the downsides to favouring immutable objects in Java? i.e. incompatibility with ORM or web presentation tools? Inflexible design? Implementation complexities? Is it possible to design a large-scale system (deep object graph) that predominately uses immutable objects?

  • if with multiple conditions, order of execution

    - by markus
    Hi, In an if statement with multiple conditions is second executed if the outcome is clear after checking the first condition? example: if(i>0 && array[i]==0){ } If I swap the conditions a seg fault may occur for negative values of i but this way the memory debugger doesn't find a problem. Can I be sure that this works always or do have have to use nested if statements?

  • Best Practices for Internationalizing a Flex Appliaction?

    - by rgould
    I am looking into internationalizing a Flex application I am working on and I am curious if there are any best practices or recommendations for doing so. Googling for such information results in a handful of small articles and blog posts, each about doing it differently, and the advantages and disadvantages are not exactly clear. Edited to narrow scope: Need to support only two languages (en_CA and fr_CA) Need to be able to switch at runtime
