  I am sure you all have heard of Responsive/Adaptive Website Design and Development, but for the sake of beginners to the technique and skill, what are ways to create a Responsive Menu Navigation? I know there are a few standard ways, hence: JavaScript/jQuery Menu that changes functionality at different breakpoints. CSS3 Menu that changes functionality at different breakpoints. If you have had the opportunity to create a Responsive Menu, what technique did you use? How did you do it? Do you have an example? Did your Menu change functionality at different break points? • What is a "Technical Programmer"? [closed]

  I've noticed in job posting boards a few postings, all from European companies in the games industry, for a "Technical Programmer". The job description in both was similar, having to do with tools development, 3d graphics programming, etc. It seems to be somewhere between a Technical Artist who's more technical than artist or who can code, and a Technical Director but perhaps without the seniority/experience. Information elsewhere on the position is sparse. The title seems redundant and I haven't seen any American companies post jobs by that name exactly. One example is this job posting on gamedev.net which isn't exactly thorough. In case the link dies: Subject: Technical Programmer Frictional Games, the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the Penumbra series, are looking for a talented programmer to join the company! You will be working for a small team with a big focus on finding new and innovating solutions. We want you who are not afraid to explore uncharted territory and constantly learn new things. Self-discipline and independence are also important traits as all work will be done from home. Some the things you will work with include: 3D math, rendering, shaders and everything else related. Console development (most likely Xbox 360). Hardware implementations (support for motion controls, etc). All coding is in C++, so great skills in that is imperative. As I mentioned, the job title has appeared from European companies so maybe it goes by another title in America. What other titles might this specialization of programmer go by?

  I recently found this article on a guy that built his own computer. It's just a bunch of wire (as far as I can tell any way) and I was just wondering what would I have to learn/read/do to make such a thing (or at least to have a really basic understanding of what he did). He also made his own operating system, which I find really impressive. I know it will take a while and I am in no hurry. Note: I am a web programmer and also have done some desktop apps (a few years ago).

• Inexplicable low ranking [closed]

  I have created two similar websites relating to monetary systems. So far, one appears to be loved by Google and the other hated. I'm struggling to work out why. The successful one is fullreservebanking.com. If you type in "full reserve banking" into Google, my site appears 2nd in the list behind Wikipedia. The unsuccessful one is fractionalreserves.com. If you type in "fractional reserve banking" into Google, it's nowhere to be seen. This is a mystery to me because both sites were created by me with the same design philosophy, both in pure html. Both are packed to the rafters with references to, and information about, their respective subjects. One issue I'm worried may be the cause is to do with the location of the sites. I got a web hosting package from hostmonster.com for fullreservebanking, but fractionalreserves is just an "add-on" which sits on a subdirectory of fullreservebanking. I wonder if Google somehow detects this and treats it as a less significant website?

• ISP issue browsing "sonos.com" - need to diagnose and prove [closed]

  I am unable to browse to a website "sonos.com" with my ISP (virgin). I have ruled out browsers, PCs, macs, routers, wifi, etc. Other ISPs (even other virgin connections in different areas!) supply this site no problem. I am 99% convinced there is a DNS issue lurking here. There is something fishy about the DNS for the site : What I notice is that online DNS sites tell me the right IP address for "sonos.com", but not for "www.sonos.com". Anyway when I type "sonos.com" the browser (any/all of the 4 I tried) fail to display the page. Firefox gives a "connection was reset" error. If I browse to sonos.com using the IP address it works OK. Browsing to www.sonos.com or sonos.com works fine with other ISPs of course. Questions: 1 Does anyone have any idea what might be going on here? 2 Any suggestions as to tools/monitors to help investigate/prove what is going on I can then take this up with virgin and/or sonos.   I have over 10 years of programming experience building (Windows-based) desktop applications and utilities (VC++, C#, Python). My goal over the next year is to start transitioning to web application development. I want to teach myself the fundamental tools and technologies that would be considered essential for building professional, online, interactive, visually-stunning, data-driven web apps -- the kind described in Google's recently released "Field Guide: Building Great Web Applications". So my question is, what are the primary, most commonly-used technologies that seasoned professionals will need in their tool belt in the coming years? My plan was to start coming up to speed in Javascript, HTML5, & CSS, and then to do a deep dive into ASP.NET and Ajax, along with SQL DBs. (I was surprised to not be able to find a single book at Amazon with a broad, general scope like this, which caused me to start second-guessing this approach.) So, seasoned professionals: am I on the right track? Are there some glaring omissions in my list? Or some unnecessary inclusions? I would welcome any book suggestions along these lines as well.

  What layout of resume works best for experienced programmers? Currently my layout is: Contact Details Focus (goal) Technical Skills Professional Experience (Responsibilities + achievements at each job) Education Interests I feel my current layout uses up too much valuable space. Most of the online templates feel like junior Resumes with emphasis on education so I am not sure how I can improve it. I wonder how many hiring managers actually care about goal/objective? To me it looks useless. Also, is it necessary to have summary of technical skills/technologies? If so, would it not make more sense for it to be mentioned later in the Resume rather then at the top? Now When I went for interviews I got selected for a company that manifolds into PHP and its technologies to create websites.The other company in which I also got selected offers more than half the higher package than previous but I have to work here on .net platform and all the Microsoft Technologies which I do not merry. The work environment of php company is quite cool with 400employees(onli 10 php developers) and the .net company has only a strength of 20employees Now the thing is I do not know about Enterprise Application Building and other stuff so guys If any advice that may help me select my job would be appreciated.

• Paypal hide address [closed]

  I hope this question is okay for this website, to me it seemed most fitting among the stackexchange sites at least. 8) I want to release my software for free, but allow donations for it. So far, I couldn't find any option in Google Checkout to set up a donation button (and website link). I am registered as merchant, but am still waiting for my bank account verification code, that may be the reason. But then, I guess I will not be able to use it anyway because it seems the 'Donation' functionality requires to be a nonprofit organization. My understanding of 'Donation' seems to be unknown to Google (yet). So unfortunately, the one remaining option is Paypal. However, even having upgraded my account to a business account, I can find no option how to remove my living address from the Checkout pages. Basically I have nothing to hide ;) but feel uncomfortable having my address displayed publicly because of the kind of software I'm offering. We live in a world with crazy people it seems, and I don't want to have nightmares of people knocking on my doors at night. So is there a way to deactivate my address from being displayed on Paypal's checkout pages?

• Creating a portfolio of projects [closed]

  As I pursue the path of becoming a programmer, I would like to build up a portfolio of projects I worked on at my current job so that I can eventually get programming work elsewhere (either as an employee, contractor, one man consulting shop, etc). Some of these were things I coded myself, others I was instrumental in the architecture, design and functionality (ie, not as a programmer but more of a BA). How do I show the work that I have done to others on the projects that I have produced for the company I work at? This is all internal software, so it's not something that the outside world would be able to use, and some of our products contain proprietary financial market tools and it would not be prudent to share those with the outside world. My guess is that screenshots would definitely be out of the question, as well as functional descriptions of the software.

• There are 2 jobs available - which one sounds better all round [closed]

  I am currently employed at a company where we scrape by each year breaking even, sometimes having a little profit. The development environment is very relaxed and we have a laugh. My colleagues are not interested in improving their knowledge unless they have to, so trying to get them to adopt things like TDD is a non-starter. My development manager is stuck in .Net 2 land and refuses to use things like LINQ. He over complicates architecture and writes very unreadable code, heres an example SortedList<int,<SortedList<int,SortedList<int, MyClass>>>> The MD of the company has no drive and lets the one sales guy bring in the contracts. We are not busy all the time and this allows me time to look at new technology and learn. In terms of using things like TDD, my development manager has no problem with it and can kind of see the purpose of it, he just wont use it himself. This means I am alone in learning new things and am often resorting to StackOverflow to make sure I get things right. The company has a lot of flexibility, I can work from home if needs be and when my daughter was born they let me work from home 1 day a week however they expect this flexibility in return often asking me to travel occasionally on a Friday afternoon for the following week. Sometimes its abroad. We are also pretty much on call 24/5 as we have engineers in various countries. Also we have no testers so most of the testing is done by us developers and some testing by engineers. Either way no-one likes testing! I have been offered a role at a company I worked at 5 years ago. They were quite Victorian in their working practices but it appears to have relaxed now although I suspect still reasonably formal. There is a new team of developers I don't know and they are about to move to new offices. The team lead is a guy that was there when I was and I get the impression he takes his role seriously and likes his formal procedures and documentation. I think some of the Victorian practices may have rubbed off on him. However he did say if things crop up then as long as I can trust the person they can work at home although he prefers people in the office. The team uses SCRUM, TDD and SOLID design principles so they are quite up to date in technology. They are reasonably Microsoft focused. It appears the Technical Director might be the R&D man and research new technology on his own not allowing developers to play with new technology. He possibly might be a super developer and makes all the decisions that no can argue with. They are currently moving to Entity Framework away from NHibernate based on issues that their queries seem to fail sometimes and they feel NHibernate is stagnant. They have analysts and a QA team. The MD is focused and they are an expanding company making profit each year. I'm not sure what the team morale is and whether they have a laugh. When I had a tour around the office they were there in dead silence. I'm really unsure which role is the best for me and going with my gut instinct is useless as I'm not sure what my gut is telling me. Based on the information above which role would you choose and why?

  Possible Duplicate: How to revert to GNOME Classic? is it possible to change general view in Ubuntu 12.04 so it was like in Ubuntu 10.04? I really liked old one and really don't like new one. Things that are annoying me: menu on the left with large icons lack of workspaces icons in right bottom corner lack of menu: Applications, Places, System in left top corner menu like: file | edit | view | help resize and red cross is available in all applications at the very top of the pulpit, unless at the very top of the application window I know it may sound crazy, but that's all me, don't like changes despite that I know they are often good. I would be very grateful for any help. I really want old view (exactly like here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2d/UbuntuMaverickDesktop.png) back. By the way, if I installed Ubuntu 12.04 by WUBI from Windows level on separated partition, then what is the easiest way to uninstall it? Can I simply format this partition? I'm wondering because I don't know if it is safe, what about boot loader etc.

• Is it illegal to forward copyrighted content? [closed]

  Ok, this may be a strange question, but let's start: If I illegally download a movie (for example...) from a HTTP Web Server, there are many routers between me and the Web Server which are forwarding the data to my PC. As I understand, the owners of the routers are not legally responsible for the data they forward (please correct if I'm wrong). What if I would install a client of a peer-to-peer network on my PC and this client (peer) would forward copyrighted content received from peers to other peers? Hope someone understand what I mean ;-) Any answer or comment would be highly appreciated. Mike Update 1: I'm asking this question because I want to develop a p2p-application and try to figure out how to prevent illegal content sharing/distribution (if forwarding content is really illegal...)   I need to purchase a single license for Visual Studio Professional with MSDN. The MSDN buy site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb841434.aspx) does not allow purchases from India. It directs Indians to purchase from resellers. I contacted Microsoft and they sent me a link to a list of resellers http://www.microsoft.com/india/originalsoftware/business/retailStore1.aspx Many of these resellers do not even have a website. Many of them do not exist at the addresses mentioned (they have moved). Microsoft support personnel also seem very cagey about releasing any information. They do not even read the mail. They simply resend their canned response with the same link. There are many resellers (not mentioned in the microsoft page) who are selling MSDN subscriptions. Are they legitimate? • How do you deal with poor management [closed]

  I come from a company where during a project, we saw the client 3 time during the whole project. We were never informed when did the client came in office in order to discuss with him about his requirements. I did setup redmine and told them that if they have any request they can post an issue there. But they never really used redmine to publish anything. They would instead: harass a team member on the phone at any time of the day or night hand us over sheets of paper with new requests or changes hand us over new design (graphical) They requested how much time it would take us to finish the project, I gave them a date and a week to test everything and deployment. I calculated that time taking into account the current features we had to do. And then blamed us that our deadline was wrong and that we lied. But the truth is that one week before that deadline they added a couple of monster feature from nowhere and that week were we were supposed to test and deploy, my friends spent all day in the office changing all little things. After that project, my friend got some kind of depression and got scared everytime his phone rang. They kind of used him as a communication proxy. After that project of hell, (every body got pissed off on that project) as far as I know the designer who was working with us left work after that project and she had some kind of issue too with managers. My team also started looking for work somewhere else. At first I tried to get things straight with management, I tried to make a meeting to discuss about the communication issues and so on.. What really pissed me off and made me leave that job for good is the following. Me: "We have to discuss about what went wrong on the last project. It's quite important" Him: "Lets talk about it in a week or two. Just make a list of all the things you did wrong" Me: "We already have a new project and we want to prevent what happened on the last project to happen again" Him: "Just do it and well have our meeting in a week, make a list of all the thing you did wrong." It kind of ended there then he organized a meeting at a moment I wasn't unable to come. My friend discussed with him and tried to explained him that we really had to discuss about organization issue on how to manage a project. And his answer was pretty much: "During the meeting I don't want to ear how you want to us to manage a project but I want to know what you guys did wrong" After that I felt it wasn't even worth it discussing anything since they weren't even ready listening to us. Found a new job and I'm pretty happy with my choice. I'd like to know how you'd handle such situation. Is there anything to do to solve communication problem? After that project my friend got a depression and some other employee had their down too as far as I know. I wonder what else we can do other than leave these place as soon as possible. Feel sad for the people that are still there and get screamed at just because they need money in order to eat and finding an other job like that isn't that easy. note I died a little when our boss asked us to make a list of things we (programmers) did wrong. This is probably the stupidest request I ever got. If everybody thinks they did everything right, it doesn't mean that there is no problems. Individual problem are rarely the big issue. Colleagues help each others and solve theses issues to prevent problems.
