  • css layout for footer at bottom with dynamic ajax content changing height of page

    [Update] I actually compromised on this problem for now by foregoing the fixed footer design. It seems that there is no problem with dynamic content moving the footer and resizing containers appropriately unless the footer is fixed to the browser bottom initially. I hope others will eventually provide a great solution that encompasses the best of both worlds. I spent all day trying to get the footer to move down the page to accommodate dynamically added (via ajax) content. I really need some pointers or links because I haven't found anything that helps. Basically: My site has some pages that begin with only a text box and a button so that the total height of the content area is only a few inches beneath the header area. I don't have any problem getting the sticky footer working so that the footer appears at the bottom of the browser window even when there is very little content on screen. That same css layout works fine for other pages that have content that extends beneath the browser window. The catch: The content has to be rendered and passed to the browser with the initial load. The Problem: Any content that is added to the page via AJAX after the initial load paints down the page correctly -- but the footer remains in its initial location. Please tell me there is a fix for this. I can't post the css until checking with my boss first - if possible - and if needed, I will later - but it's just a very basic version of the many sticky footer css solutions floating around the web.   • jQuery - Creating a dynamic content loader using $.get()

    Hello everybody! (hello dr.Nick) :) So I posted a question yesterday about a content loader plugin for jQuery I thought I'd use, but didn't get it to work. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2469291/jquery-could-use-a-little-help-with-a-content-loader Although it works now, I see some disadvantages to it. It requires heaploads of files where the content is in. Since the code essentially picks up the url in the href link and searches that file for a div called #content What I would really like to do is to collect all of these files into a single file and give each div/container it's unique ID and just pick up the content from those. So i won't need so many separate files laying around. Nick Craver thought I should use $.get()instead since it's got a descent callback. But I'm not that strong in js at all.. And I don't even know what this means. I'm basically used to Visual Basic and passing of arguments, storing in txt files etc. Which is really not suitable for this purpose. So what's the "normal" way of doing things like this? I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who's thought of this right? I basically want to get content from a single php file that contains alot of divs with unique IDs. And without much hassle, fade out the existing content in my main page, pick up the contents from the other file and fade it into my main page.

  • How do I update the system wallpaper in an Android 1.6 service after changing it with setWallpaper()

    So basically the code "almost" works - the problem is that the system does not appear to know that the system wallpaper have been changed or does not do anything about it. Starting and closing another app manually appears to enforce an update. In an event call the following is done: getApplicationContext().setWallpaper(pWallOne); Is there some way of telling the android system to update the graphics or to do some cheap trick that forces it to? Any help or tip would be very much appreciated!!

I love Java and some of the newer JVM languages but at the same time I really enjoy low-level system programming under Unix, using C and the GNU toolchain (it makes you feel elitist ;-)). Now I wonder a) is there still a market for C system programmers and b) how much do you earn compared to an app programmer c) is it that much fun in a large scale project?

    Is there a way to guarantee that your system tray icon is removed? To add the system tray icon you do: Shell_NotifyIcon(NIM_ADD, &m_tnd); To remove the system tray icon you do: Shell_NotifyIcon(NIM_DELETE, &m_tnd); What I want to know: what if you application crashes? The icon stays in your system tray until you mouse over. Is there a way to guarantee that the icon will be removed, even when the application crashes? I would prefer not to use structured exception handling for various reasons. Another case that I want to handle is when the process is killed, but doesn't necessarily crash.

  • Cocos2d-xna memory management for WP8

    I recently upgraded to VS2012 and try my in dev game out on the new WP8 emulators but was dismayed to find out the emulator now crashes and throws an out of memory exception during my sprite loading procedure (funnily, it still works in WP7 emulators and on my WP7). Regardless of whether the problem is the emulator or not, I want to get a clear understanding of how I should be managing memory in the game. My game consists of a character whom has 4 or more different animations. Each animation consists of 4 to 7 frames. On top of that, the character has up to 8 stackable visualization modifications (eg eye type, nose type, hair type, clothes type). Pre memory issue, I preloaded all textures for each animation frame and customization and created animate action out of them. The game then plays animations using the customizations applied to that current character. I re-looked at this implementation when I received the out of memory exceptions and have started playing with RenderTexture instead, so instead of pre loading all possible textures, it on loads textures needed for the character, renders them onto a single texture, from which the animation is built. This means the animations use 1/8th of the sprites they were before. I thought this would solve my issue, but it hasn't. Here's a snippet of my code: var characterTexture = CCRenderTexture.Create((int)width, (int)height); characterTexture.BeginWithClear(0, 0, 0, 0); // stamp a body onto my texture var bodySprite = MethodToCreateSpecificSprite(); bodySprite.Position = centerPoint; bodySprite.Visit(); bodySprite.Cleanup(); bodySprite = null; // stamp eyes, nose, mouth, clothes, etc... characterTexture.End(); As you can see, I'm calling CleanUp and setting the sprite to null in the hope of releasing the memory, though I don't believe this is the right way, nor does it seem to work... I also tried using SharedTextureCache to load textures before Stamping my texture out, and then clearing the SharedTextureCache with: CCTextureCache.SharedTextureCache.RemoveAllTextures(); But this didn't have an effect either. Any tips on what I'm not doing? I used VS to do a memory profile of the emulation causing the crash. Both WP7.1 and WP8 emulators peak at about 150mb of usage. WP8 crashes and throws an out of memory exception. Each customisation/frame is 15kb at the most. Lets say there are 8 layers of customisation = 120kb but I render then onto one texture which I would assume is only 15kb again. Each animation is 8 frames at the most. That's 15kb for 1 texture, or 960kb for 8 textures of customisation. There are 4 animation sets. That's 60Kb for 4 sets of 1 texture, or 3.75MB for 4 sets of 8 textures of customisation. So even if its storing every layer, its 3.75MB.... no where near the 150mb breaking point my profiler seems to suggest :( WP 7.1 Memory Profile (max 150MB) WP8 Memory Profile (max 150MB and crashes)

  • Using XNA ContentPipeline to export a file in a machine without full XNA GS

    My game uses the Content Pipeline to load the spriteSheet at runtime. The artist for the game sends me the modified spritesheet and I do a build in my machine and send him an updated project. So I'm looking for a way to generate the xnb files in his machine (this is the output of the content pipeline) without him having to install the full XNA Game studio. 1) I don't want my artist to install VS + Xna (I know there is a free version of VS but this won't scale once we add more people to the team). 2) I'm not interested in running this editor/tool in Xbox so a Windows only solution works. 3) I'm aware of MSBuild options but they require full XNA I researched Shawn's blog and found the option of using Msbuild Sample or a new option in XNA 4.0 that looked promising here but seems like it has the same restriction: Need to install full XNA GS because the ContentPipeline is not part of the XNA redist. So has anyone found a workaround for this?

    Change is constant.  That saying couldn’t be truer when applied to software development.   And with all that change comes extensive product complexity.  How do you manage it all?  As software developers ourselves, we can certainly empathize with the challenge. On April 3, 2012 Stephen Van Lare, VP of PLM Product Development, hosted a webcast to share how Oracle uses Agile to develop Agile – a PLM solution for managing a PLM solution!   Stephen passionately shared his unique insight based on 10 years of using Agile PLM to manage the development process, as well as customer use cases.  He shared our time-proven view of the software’s relationship to the product record, while pointing out that PLM is not source control.  He began with the challenges of software development, which boiled down to the deduction that “despite many great tools in the software development industry, it takes a lot more than good source control, more than good bug tracking, to get to an on-time, on-budget and quality release in your marketplace.   It requires defining the right things you want to do, managing the scope, managing your schedule, and, most importantly, managing the change to all those things over the lifecycle of the process. And this is the definition of PLM.”   Stephen then defined the relationship of PLM to the software development process by detailing the two main use cases –  Product Lifecycle and Mechatronics – which can be used simultaneously and in fact are already used in most industries today.  The Product Lifecycle use case is used to manage artifacts and change throughout product development, while the Mechatronics use case involves the software, hardware and electrical design in the BOM.  In essence, PLM is just as relevant to software as the rest of the BOM when trying to maximize profits during any phase of the lifecycle.   • Software for "High-level" source code (C++) Management

    after a lot of small-medium projects, I have a lot of libraries and test programs here and there. Also, I must admit that some of the "best practices" I learnt are not that "good" IMHO. In particular, documenting your code and making a "high-level" documentation is not useful in practice: High-level documentation are not maintain up to date = I prefer to read the source code directly; Browsing generated developer documentation is a pain (IMHO) = I prefer to read the source code directly. For that reason, I am looking for a tool who could help me organize all my source code directories in a more "readable manner". What I need is a tool which: Maintains an UML diagram from C++ source code. I don't need source code generation from UML; USE CASE: I am in this super-tool, I notice a design issue, I change the source code, when I get back, the UML diagram is updated; Maintains easily browsable call graphs; Lists references to methods, variables, etc. For example, when I want to see where/when a method is called; Helps writing pseudo-code from C++; Embeds a nice C++ source code browser; Is Open Source would be great; Works at least on Win7. The focus of this tool should be to browse source code to understand what's going on. For example, when you have a newcomer and you need him to go through source code. Do you know any great tool? Thanks in advance. PS: please do not answer doxygen (great tool however).

  • how to enable iis 7 dynamic content compression?

    I've turned on dynamic content compression in IIS 7, but Fiddler is showing that my dynamic pages are still being served without content-encoding: gzip. Static content compression is working fine on the same servers. Not sure if it matters but most of the dynamic pages are coldfusion pages and we're also using the IIS URL rewriting module.   • Home Energy Management & Automation with Windows Phone 7

    A number of people at Clarity are personally interested in home energy conservation and home automation. We feel that a mobile device is a great fit for bringing this idea to fruition. While this project is merely a concept and not directly associated with Microsofts Hohm web service, it provides a great model for communicating the concept. I wanted to take the idea a step further and combine saving energy in your home with the ability to track water usage and control your home devices. I designed an application that focuses on total home control and not just energy usage. Application Overview By monitoring home consumption in real time and with yearly projections users can pinpoint vampire devices, times of high or low consumption, and wasteful patterns of energy use. Energy usage meters indicate total current consumption as well as individual device consumption. Users can then use the information to take action, make adjustments, and change their consumption behaviors. The app can be used to automate certain systems like lighting, temperature, or alarms. Other features can be turned on an off at the touch of a toggle switch on your phone, away from home. Forget to turn off the TV or shut the garage door? No problem, you can do it from your phone. Through settings you can enable and disable features of the phone that apply to your home making it a completely customized and convenient experience. To be clear, this equates to more security, big environmental impact, and even bigger savings.   Design and User Interface  Since this panorama application is designed for win phone 7 devices, it complies with the UI Design and Interaction Guide for wp7. I developed the frame and page hierarchy from existing examples. The interface takes advantage of the interactive nature of touch screens with slider controls, pivot control views, and toggle switches to turn on and off devices (not shown in mockup). I followed recommendations for text based elements and adapted the tile notifications to display the most recent user activity. For example, the mockup indicates upon launching the app that the last thing you did was program the thermostat. This model is great for quick launching common user actions. One last design feature to point out is the technical reasons for supplying both light and dark themes for the app. Since this application is targeting energy consumption it only makes sense to consider the effect of the apps background color or image on the phones energy use. When displaying darker colors like black the OLED display may use less power, extending battery life. Other Considerations For now I left out options of wind and solar powered energy options because they are not available to everyone. Renewable energy sources and new technologies associated with them are definitely ideas to keep in mind for a next iteration. Another idea to explore for such an application would be to include a savings model similar to mint.com. In addition to general energy-saving recommendations the application could recommend customized ways to save based on your current utility providers and available options in your area. If your television or refrigerator is guilty of sucking a lot of energy then you may see recommendations for energy star products that could save you even more money! I try to search for some resources online with not much luck; most of the examples are for writing contents to word document using OpenXml. I decide to blog this as my reference and hopefully people who read this post will find it useful as well. To retrieve the contents of Microsoft Word document using XML is extremely simple. 1. Firstly, you need to download and install the Open XML SDK 2.0 for Microsoft Office. (Download link) 2. Create a Console application then add the DocumentFormat.OpenXml.dll and WindowsBase.dll to the project, you can find these dlls in the .NET tab of the Add Reference window. 3.
