  • IIS: No Session being handed out, but only in production

    I've reproduced this in a simple project - details below. It's a WCF service in ASP.NET compatibility mode. What I'm seeing is that when run on the dev machine (Win7), a HTTP session id is available inside the service operation (HttpContext.Current.Session is non-null). But when deployed to the server (Win2k8R2), I get "No session". On both machines the app is configured to use the classic app pool, and the app pools themselves are configured identically as far as I can tell. The only differences I can discern between the two applications is that on the dev box, under "Handler Mappings", ISAPI-dll is disabled (not on the server), and on the server there's a spurious handler called "AboMapperCustom-7105160" (does not exist on the dev box). What should I be looking at next? Am I missing something head-slappingly simple?   • Hour-long shutdown duration "shutting down hyper-v virtual machine management service"

    I have a Windows 2008 R2 server that is a Hyper-V host (Dell PowerEdge T300). Today for the first time I encountered an odd situation; i lost connection with one of the guest machines but logging on physically it seems the guest OS is still running but no longer contactable via the network. I tried to shut down the guest machine (Windows XP) but it would not shut down, getting stuck in a "Not responding" dialog box that cannot be dismissed. I used the Hyper-V management console to reset the machine and it could not get out of resetting state. I tried to save another Windows 2003 guest machine, and it would be progress with its Saving state (0%). The other running Windows 2003 guest was stuck in the logon dialog. My first suspicion is perhaps one of the Windows update patches this week (10 Nov 2011) may something to do with it, which was still pending a system restart. Well, since I could not do anything with Hyper-V i proceeded with the Windows Update restart, and now it is stuck half an hour at "Shutting down hyper-v virtual machine management service" Prior to restarting I did not observe any hard disk errors reported in the system event log; doubt it is a disk-related condition. Shall I force a hard reboot? UPDATE Ok so i left it hanging over an hour while attending to other matters, and thankfully the host cleanly restarted. I can operate the guest machines fine now. Phew. Hyper-V must have been crawling for some reason. The VMs have been observed to become slow in the past when the host has been up for a long duration (two weeks to a month), but never this slow. Would love to know what types of performance monitoring items i can observe to give a hint why this can happen. UPDATE 2012-02-13 In the months ever since, Hyper-V has stalled into this state another two times. It appears so randomly and without any error event logs to hint what is causing it enter this "drunkard" state. Just an Hyper-V management service timeout.     Is there any way to persuade Eclipse to use tabs instead of spaces for indenting its built-in Java content assist proposals (such as when creating an empty method which overrides a method in the parent class)? The only setting I could find that looked relevant is in Windows/Preferences/General/Editors/Text Editors/Insert spaces for tabs, and this setting is unchecked. At the moment I have to remember to select them and re-format with <Ctrl>+<Shift>+<F>.

    Hello All, I have a VS2008 ASP.NET Web Service Application running on the local IIS of my XP machine. A separate project in the same solution uses test methods to invoke the WS calls, and run their processes. When I added a web reference to the WS App, VS2008 created a Settings.settings file in the Properties folder to store the address of the web reference. This process also created a new section in the Web.config file called applicationSettings to store the values from Settings.settings When my application attempts to retrieve configuration values from the appSettings section of the Web.config file, via ConfigurationManager.AppSettings[key], all values are null and AppSettings.AllKeys.Length is always zero. I even reverted the Web.config file to before the web reference was added, and made sure it was exactly the same as a system-generated web.config file for a new project that works fine. After comparing the reverted Web.config and a new Web.config, I addded one simple value in the appSettings section, and still no luck with ConfigurationManager.AppSettings[key].   • A strong component keeps everything together

    Most of the times you implement a WebCenter Content based system, you require some sort of customization. Sometimes these customizations need a Java class or two, or libraries (for example, the JavaMail API), or Database Objects (like new tables, views, indexes, etc). I have seen that libraries and Database Objects are usually put in place using manual steps. This means that the library jar files are copied to one of the common classes directory (set in the Content CLASSPATH variable) and/or the database scripts are executed manually. I have also seen people place the custom Java classes in the common classes directory. While this may seem like an easy solution, think about a scenario where you need to disable or uninstall the component or if you have to upgrade or migrate the system. You have to keep these manual steps documented and execute them every time you encounter the above scenarios. It is very common that some of these manual steps are missed when you have multiple teams and people working on the system. Here are a few points to ponder upon: Place all your custom Java classes within your component. Create a new directory, say ${COMPONENT_DIR}/classes, and place your code there. You can choose to bundle all your classes into a jar or you can place the entire class directory structure. Add a path entry to the Build Settings so that it is bundled with the component when you build it. You also need to update the Custom Class Path and the Custom Class Path Load Order under the Advanced Build Settings. This will ensure that the system CLASSPATH is updated to add this new directory. Create a new component for any new library that you want to add. Add the appropriate path entries to the Build Settings so that it is bundled with the component when you build it. You also need to update the Custom Class Path, Custom Class Path Load Order and/or the Custom Library Path under the Advanced Build Settings. Enter a comma separated list of features that this component will provide. When you create other components that will use the features exposed by this component, make sure that you specify a dependency to this library component by specifying the comma separated list of features in the Advanced Build Settings. The component wizard allows you to create custom install/uninstall Java code. The wizard will create a install filter class when you check the “Has Install” checkbox on the “Install/Uninstall Settings” tab. Consider using this filter class to create database objects when you install the component and drop the objects when you uninstall the component. If you do a lot of custom component development, consider creating a install/uninstall Java class, which can execute queries defined within the component. To sum up, whenever you write a new custom component, make sure that you bundle everything within the component.

  • empty response body in ajax (or 206 Partial Content)

    Hi guys, I'm feeling completely stupid because I've spent two hours solving task which should be very simple and which I solved many times before. But now I'm not even sure in which direction to dig. I fail to fetch static content using ajax from local servers (Apache and Mongrel). I get responses 200 and 206 (depending on the server), empty response text (although Content-Length header is always correct), firebug shows request in red. Javascript is very generic, I'm getting same results even here: http://www.w3schools.com/ajax/tryit.asp?filename=tryajax_first (just change document location to 'http://localhost:3000/whatever') So, it's probably not the cause. Well, now I'm out of ideas. I can also post http headers, if it'll help. Thanks!   • How can I terminate a system command with alarm in Perl?

    I am running the below code snippet on Windows. The server starts listening continuously after reading from client. I want to terminate this command after a time period. If I use alarm() function call within main.pl, then it terminates the whole Perl program (here main.pl), so I called this system command by placing it in a separate Perl file and calling this Perl file (alarm.pl) in the original Perl File using the system command. But in this way I was unable to take the output of this system() call neither in the original Perl File nor in called one Perl File.     Hi, We're currently looking at an IT upgrade and I'm after recommendations for a tool which can do some or all of the following. SVN management (authz, web viewer, commit log, diff) Create template projects (1 click e.g. create me a microsite with this name in svn and give these people access) Reporting on code churn, time spent on tasks on a per project basis User story management Basically like Team Foundation Server but that integrates with SVN properly (reason for this - we have a wide range of skill sets and not everyone can use a TFS client). Is there a combination of Trac plugins + something that can create trac instances (a la Dreamhost's admin panel) that can acheive this. On a side note, does anyone have any experience of version controlling designery type files - e.g. PSDs, Illustrator files. Any advice at all appreciated. Cheers, Rob

    Jeff's recent article linked to a time management example of the First Fit Decreasing algorithm, which talked about the Pareto principle (or, the 80/20 rule) of time management, that is, that 80% of the work we produce in 20% of our time. Now we've all heard the programmer quote: The first 90% of the code accounts for the first 90% of the development time. The remaining 10% of the code accounts for the other 90% of the development time. But all jokes aside, it is often as if 20% of your code is to do what you want, and the other 80% is to handle exceptions... so does the 80/20 rule really apply to developers? Does anyone have any examples of why it does / does not apply to us?

But I would like to run a full transformation over the entire raw content of the JSON without parsing each object/array/item.     I was reading through 2010 CWE/SANS Top 25 Most Dangerous Programming Errors and one of the entries is for Buffer Copy without Checking Size of Input. It suggests using a language with features to prevent or mitigate this problem, and says: For example, many languages that perform their own memory management, such as Java and Perl, are not subject to buffer overflows. Other languages, such as Ada and C#, typically provide overflow protection, but the protection can be disabled by the programmer. I was not aware that Java and C# differed in any meaningful way with regard to memory management. How is it that Java is not subject to buffer overflows, while C# only protects against overflows? And how is it possible to disable this protection in C#?

  • Can I mark an Email as "High Importance" for Outlook using System.Net.Mail?

    Part of the application I'm working on for my client involves sending emails for events. Sometimes these are highly important. My client, and most of my client's clients, use Outlook, which has the ability to mark a mail message as High Importance. Now, I know it is callous to assume that all end users will be using the same interface, sp I am not. But considering you can send email from Outlook as High Importance even if the target is not necessarily reading through Outlook, that means that there is basically some data stored... somehow... that lets Outlook know if a particular message was assigned as High Importance. That's my interpretation, at least. The application currently uses System.Net.Mail to send out emails, using System.Net.Mail.MailMessages for writing them and System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient to send them. Is it possible to set this "High Importance" setting with System.Net.Mail's abilities? If not, is there any assembly available which can configure this setting?

    Does anyone tell me how to block system calls within a program, please? I am building a system which takes a piece of C source code, compiles it with gcc and runs it. For security reasons, I need to prevent the compiled program from calling system calls. Is there any way to do it, from the source code level (e.g. stripping the header files of gcc, detecting malicious external calls, ...) to the executable level?
