    What is the best way to modify the latest added row without using a temporary table. E.g. the table structure is id | text | date My current approach would be an insert with the postgresql specific command "returning id" so that I can update the table afterwards with update myTable set date='2013-11-11' where id = lastRow However I have the feeling that postgresql is not simply using the last row but is iterating through millions of entries until "id = lastRow" is found. How can i directly access the last added row?

Say I have this table: Books ( id, title, year ) and this array of titles in PHP: $titles = array ("bible","kafka","Book of Eli"); now I want update all rows where the title is in the $titles array above. So I need a query like this: UPDATE books SET year = '2001-11-11' WHERE title is in $titles; Is is possible with one single query ? Or do I need to use FOR loop ?

    i have a simple update query (foo column type is BOOLEAN (default false)): update tablename set foo = true where id = 234; which "id" is set to (primary) key, and if i run "explain analyze" i got: Index Cond: (id = 234) Total runtime: 0.358 ms but still, i have plenty of unexplained queries at slow log (pgfouine), which took more than 200s (?!): Times executed: 99, Av. duration (s): 70 can anyone please explain, whats the reason for that? (1.5 mio rows in table, postgresql 8.4)

    $('#passport_expiry').datepicker({dateFormat: 'mm/y'}); I have the above code works. I select a date using the datepicker and it updates the textfield. The problem is that when I try to select another date, it doesn't update the textfield. It seems that when the textfield already has a value, it doesn't update it.

    A couple of times I've been in the situation where I've wanted to refactor the design of some model and have ended up putting update logic in migrations. However, as far as I've understood, this is not good practice (especially since you are encouraged to use your schema file for deployment, and not your migrations). How do you deal with these kind of problems? To clearify what I mean, say I have a User model. Since I thought there would only be two kinds of users, namely a "normal" user and an administrator, I chose to use a simple boolean field telling whether the user was an adminstrator or not. However, after I while I figured I needed some third kind of user, perhaps a moderator or something similar. In this case I add a UserType model (and the corresponding migration), and a second migration for removing the "admin" flag from the user table. And here comes the problem. In the "add_user_type_to_users" migration I have to map the admin flag value to a user type. Additionally, in order to do this, the user types have to exist, meaning I can not use the seeds file, but rather create the user types in the migration (also considered bad practice).     I am trying to get put out a simple site, which would pool the database every few seconds and update the information on the page dynamicly, when theres something new inserted. I am farily new to ruby, but I understand the whole concept of RJS, link_to_function and soforth. The question is, what is the best way how to implement some kind of simple loop, which would run after the page is loaded and update the DOM if there is something new to display. I have a doctrine update query to save my data: $customer = Doctrine_Query::create() -update('Customer') -set('fax',"'". $this-getRequest()-getParam('fax')."'") -where('id ='.$this-getRequest()-getParam('id')) -execute(); The problem is that the field fax has parenthesis and doctrine returns an error in the query because of these parenthesis "(" and ")".     I have the following code. What I want to achieve is to update the shown list when I click an entry so I can traverse through the list. I found the two uncommented ways to do it here on stackoverflow, but neither works. I also got the advice to create a new ListActivity on the data update, but that sounds like wasting resources?
