• HDMI Sound for HTPC

  I have the (perhaps) the same problem as stated in this other HDMI sound to HTPC question. I tried the advice of clicking on the speaker in the system tray. I can see the HDMI audio device I want to use. That device claims to be functioning properly. But there is no sound, and it won't let me select it as the active audio device. When I click on the troubleshooter, it says that there are no speakers connected. I would think this is because my computer us unable to pipe sound through the video card (preventing the HDMI from carrying it), except that it truly claims that it has an HDMI sound device that is working correctly. So I'm not sure what is wrong at this point. Thoughts? My system is Windows 7 x64. In case it makes a difference, the video card I'm using is this GeForce GTX 560

• Windows 8, NVIDIA graphics recognition fails

  I just installed Windows 8 Pro OEM 64-bit (clean install) and it won't properly recognize my graphics adapter. When I installed Win8, it automatically installed the BasicDisplay.sys driver dated 6/21/2006. 6.2.9200.16384 (win8_rtm.120725-1247). Hardware - Mobo:MSi G41M-P33 Combo CPU:Intel CoreDuo 6600 Graphics:NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT *OS* - Windows 8 Pro 64-bit OEM The graphics adapter worked fine in Windows XP. The PC is a generic box, bought locally and its mobo failed recently, so I replaced it with the G41M. Microsoft wouldn't let me re-activate Windows XP with a different mobo, so I installed Win8, which appears to work except as described next. Win8 only partially recognizes the graphics adapter and won't allow NVIDIA latest driver installer to see that it's an NVIDIA card. As a result, OpenGL doesn't work, and this is needed by the software I most use. Other than that the graphics look OK. When I say 'partially recognizes', I mean that via the Control Panel, I can see that the adapter is described as NVIDIA, but the driver remains stuck at Microsoft Basic Display Adapter no matter what I try, including "Update driver..." in adapter properties. Display Screen Resolution Advanced Settings Adapter shows: Adapter Type: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter Chip Type: NVIDIA DAC Type: NVIDIA Corporation Bios Information: G27 Board - p381n17 Don't know what this means ... no mention of 9400GT Total Available Graphics Memory: 256 MB Dedicated Video Memory: 0 MB In fact the adapter has 512MB on-board video memory. System Video Memory: 0 MB Shared System Memory: 256 MB And Control Panel Device Manager Display adapters just shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. No other graphics adapter, and no unknown device or yellow question mark. What I have tried so far: 1. Cleared CMOS and reset. Updated BIOS and all mobo drivers as follows: 1st I used Driver Reviver to see if any driver updates were required. It found some but I didn't use that to get the drivers. Then I switched to MSi's own mobo driver utility Live Update 5. This also showed the board needed to update several so I used it to fetch the new drivers. After that it showed that everything was up to date and I checked with Driver Reviver again, which also reported no drivers now needed updating. Rebooted. Went to the NVIDIA site to get the latest graphics adapter driver. Their auto-detect "Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products" said "The NVIDIA Smart Scan was unable to evaluate your system hardware. Please use Option 1 to manually find drivers for your NVIDIA products." So I downloaded 310.70-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe, which lists 9400 GT under supported products, but when I run it, it says: "NVIDIA Installer cannot continue This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware." Connected the display to the on-board Intel graphics (G41 Intel Express), removed the NVIDIA card and rebooted, changed to internal graphics in CMOS. Again it installs the MS Basic Display Adapter, and can't properly run my s/w that needs OpenGL. It runs on other machines with Intel Express graphics (WinXP and 7) Shut down and pulled out the power cord. Held start button to discharge all capacitors. Removed and re-inserted NVIDIA adapter in PCI-E slot and made sure properly seated. Connected the monitor to the card, screwed plug to socket. Reconnected power cord. Started and checked in BIOS that Primary Graphics Adapter was set to PCI-E. Started Windows. Uninstalled MS Basic Display Adapter in Device Manager. Screen blanks briefly, reappears. No Graphics adapter entry was then visible in Device Manager. Restarted PC. MS Basic Display Adapter Visible again in Device Manager. Clicked in Device Manager View Show hidden devices. No other graphics adapter appears, no unknown devices. Rebooted. Tried Scan for Hardware changes. None detected. Tried right-click on MS Basic Display Adapter Properties Driver Update Driver... Search automatically. It replied that it had determined driver was up to date. I checked that there were no graphic driver-related entries in Programs and Features that I could delete (none). Searched for any other drivers with nvidia in their name and deleted them, just keeping the 306.97 installer exe file. Did a Windows Update. Ran GPU-Z which shows (main items): Microsoft Basic Display Adapter GPU G72 BIOS 5.72.22.76.88 Device ID 10DE - 01D5 DDR2 Bus Width 32 Bit Memory size 64MB Driver Version nvlddmkm 6.2.9200.16384 (ForceWare 0.00) / Win8 64 NVIDIA SLI Unknown in the drop-down at the foot, "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" is the only option If I swap hard disks in that machine to one with a Ubuntu 10.4 installation (originally installed on the same PC), lspci shows "VGA compatible controller as NVIDIA Corporation Device 01d5 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])" and "kernel driver in use: nvidia" I'm out of ideas for new things to try and would be really grateful of suggestions. • Using Apache Environment Variables to set custom ErrorDocument

  I've got a set of RewriteCond rules that test for various mobile devices and then set environment variables like "env=device:.iphone" or "env=device:.smartphone" if the useragent matches an iPhone or Android device. I'm trying to now redirect the user to custom-styled 404/500 server error pages for each device, by way of the error pages. Ideally I'd like to be able to test for a variable being there, and then write in a custom ErrorDocument string. But an apache doesn't seem to work in this case. Any ideas how I can construct if/else tests in an apache conf file for environment vars?

• USB keyboard not working under Windows 7 x64?

  I have two USB keyboards, one no-name cheap thing and an old Logitech. When I plug them in to my computer they pop up in Device Manager as an "Unknown device" and "USB-receiver", respectively. Both of them fail to install any drivers, neither automatically or through Windows Update. Both keyboards work perfectly on another computer I have with Windows Vista 32-bit. Can this be one of those cases where a device does not work in a 64-bit version of Windows? I doubt it though since I've never had that problem before with any device and I thought that basic things like keyboards would be kind of failsafe. I don't really know how to start debugging this issue. I've tried all the obvious, rebooting, changing the USB port, etc. Are there any generic x64 keyboard drivers you can use? Is there any way to find the manufacturer of the keyboard over USB? There is nothing written on it.

• Canon HV20 recognized, but no drivers in Windows 7 x64

  My Canon HV20 camcorder is properly recognized when connected via Firewire to Windows 7 x64, but no drivers are installed for it. Windows or I cannot locate any drivers for it as, but it should be working off-the-shelf. I googled a lot, and found instructions to set IEEE 1394 host to legacy mode via Device Manager, but Windows doesn't offer me the legacy option at all. If I check the properties of Canon&HV20 device in Other devices section it says The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. It used to work just fine on my previous installation of Vista x64 and same hardware :/

• A can ping B, B can ping C but A cant ping C. How do i connect A to C (ethernet)?

  I have a computer at home with ip 192.168.221.xxx I have another computer at work that I can ping and it has 2 ip addresses: 192.168.1.xxx and 192.168.0.xxx. Those last 2 addresses have the same gateway ie 192.168.1.1 . The computer at work is connected to a hub. That hub also has an embedded device connected to it with address 192.168.0.xxx Now from my home computer I cannot ping this embedded device. How would I connect to it without changing the subnetwork it connects to? I can ping the embedded device from my work computer and I can ping the work computer from my home computer. So I am trying to connect to the embedded device from my home computer through my work computer. Port forwarding? how would I establish that on Ubuntu?

• No surround sound over HDMI

  I have my Pioneer receiver hooked up to my AMD HD4600m which supports audio output over HDMI. I used to work fine, however, after a recent driver update, it will only output stereo sound. It used to output 5.1 surround sound perfectly. Windows does not seem to recognize the device as capable of 5.1. In the past, 5.1 was given as an option in the configuration window, like this: I can not get it to properly recognize the capabilities of the device. I have tried uninstalling the relevant audio device in device manager, and I have also completely removed and reinstalled the display driver. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

• Apollo linux boot into single user

  We have a device that runs Appolo Linux and I have to boot that device into a single user mode so that i can run a fsck to check the hard drive for errors. I've been goggling this during the past hour and so far I haven't found any specific method on how can I do that on this version on Linux. The device is known formerly as a NFX Cinxi One - now re-branded into BlackStratus LOG Storm. If any of you have any experience with this one you may know it is a device that is used to collect logs from other servers. I know that the above info isn't much but that is everything that I can provide up until now since tomorrow I have to follow up closely on this problem.

• Windows XP cannot read DVD burned on Ubuntu

  The story : I have burned a DVD disc on Ubuntu using Brasero. When file burning was complete, I canceled the burning of checksum to DVD. Then I put that DVD on Windows XP (SP3) and copied all the files from DVD to the hard drive (no errors when copying). When that was done I discovered that all copied files are not readable. What is more, all the files on that DVD also shown to be not readable, even though all file names, directories were in their place. What I found out? Windows detect that the disc is in CDFS (CD-ROM File System). Disc is clean as new, have no scratches. All files while opened in Notepad++ look like "NULNULNULNULNUL" in one line. The size of files is normal. Other discs that are recognized as CDFS can be read with no problems. What I tried? Starting CDFS service in Windows registry. Result - a new device in Windows Device Manager (JUBS JGH2ZCT SCSI CdRom Device). Removing my CD/DVD device from Device Manager. Result - Windows restarted the system and reinstalled the driver. So... how to read the DVD, when I have no access to any other PC, any other OS?

  System: HP Proliant DL360 G5 running CentOS 5.4 Bonded interface is working fine for a long time. I just went to add an alias the way I always have on a regular interface, and on first check it works (pinging on the local box) but it is not accessable from outside (iptables is turned off). In addition with this setup the normal network response started to decline, hanging for around a minute before I could get a prompt on login. • How to duplicate a backup set from one media server to another

  I really honestly can't figure out how to do this. It's easy enough to open Backup Exec and tell it to duplicate the data on one local device onto another local device. What I cannot figure out how to do is make it duplicate data from one local device to a remote device. I can connect to the remote BE server, but then I can only access the remove devices. I can connect to the local BE server, but then I can only access the local devices. I can't figure out how the heck to get access to both local and remove devices simultaneously. Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 for Windows, in case it matters.

• VirtualBox: Grub sees hard drive, Linux does not

  I installed Linux on my second hard drive. I can boot to it just fine. But when I try to boot it from a Windows 7 host using http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch09.html#rawdisk, grub sees it and can load vmlinuz and initramfs. Log: :: running early hook [udev] :: running hook [udev] :: Triggering uevents... :: running hook [plymouth] :: Loading plymouth...done. ... Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-uuid/{root UUID} ... ERROR: device 'UUID={root UUID}' not found. Skipping fsck. ERROR: Unable to find root device 'UUID={root UUID}' It then drops me into a recovery shell. I checked "/etc/fstab" and it's empty, there are also no sd* devices in dev, the only thing in /dev/disk/by-id is a VBox CD device. I'm not too good with these kinds of things so help would be greatly appriciated.

  I'm trying to setup a VPN on my local network, but everyone who connects to me DOES have access to my laptop but not to the internet or other devices on the network. How can I properly configure my VPN on windows to work correctly (giving internet + access to all devices on my network to the remote pc)? Or is there software on windows which makes creating a VPN server easier? or maybe a VMWare image linux vpn server? I can't find any of those! My requirement is that my friends don't have to install additional software, they have to be able to connect with default windows stuff. My OS is Windows 8 Standart edition (not pro or enterprise) OEM. Most of my friends have also windows 8, some windows 7. Extra info: My device is DMZ'ed (Demilitarized Zone, [disabled NAT on my device so it's accessible on the WAN]) I can access files, websites and services on other devices on my network, and all devices can access file shares, website and all other services on my device When enabling VPN everything works except the client is unable to get internet access or access to any device on my network, client has only access to my device.

  I've had the same mouse for a while, and it's been working fine until one day, it started giving me a message about a device not working properly. I tried updating the drivers, and re-installing, I even deleted old drivers in case my computer should be a little confused. It never made a difference, and my mouse seemed to be working just fine despite getting the permanent error in my device manager, I looked it up several times online, but I never found anything I could actually use, when I go to official websites, I always get the same response "plug in so so into a different place - drivers - install silverlight before you can watch this tutorial, try it on a different machine". so I gave up on that. But now is where I have a real problem, lately, my little strange error evolved into a fullblown Error 24, and my mouse is starting to turn on and off randomely, especially when it is being used, but I do hear it go "badum..dadum" when I'm off doing something else. when I looked up error code 24, I really didn't find much other than it meaning: Code 24 This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24) Cause The device is installed incorrectly. The problem could be a hardware failure, or a new driver might be needed. Devices stay in this state if they have been prepared for removal. After you remove the device, this error disappears. But, I have tried uninstalling the device entirely several times, and it'll go right back to its previous state with error 24, and turning on and off randomely. what do I do? I cannot afford taking it to a repair place, I can't really afford a new mouse either, I refuse to buy cheap ones as I am a gamer, in need of more than 3 buttons, and a good grip is important. Could there possibly be some confusion in the registry? I do remember having gotten some early problems after I converted my vista to windows7. But I hardly dare going in there unless I'm 100% certain of what I'm going for, and I can honestly say I am at a loss here. Edit: it is a USB mouse we're talking about here.   Hi I got a Raspberry Pi at A.A.A.B in my local network and I have set up a DMZ on my router so that any incoming traffic that comes to my router gets redirected to my raspberry pi wich I can connect via NO-IP adress. The problem is that I want to set up portforwarding since i got several services running on my Pi like SSH, torrent webgui, webalbum, etc. I had this already done before long time ago, but I forgot a bit the syntax and cant get to set it up. Router Help says: The Application allows you to do port forwarding, but only have the ports open when data flowing out of the trigger ports. When a program sends data out on outgoing ports called trigger ports, the device then allows incoming data on the open ports specified in your port triggering configuration. 1.Trigger Port Start Trigger Port Start Specify the start port on the device that would trigger the device to open ports for incoming data. 2.Trigger Port End Specify the end port on the device that would trigger the device to open ports for incoming data. You can enter a port number the same as the trigger port start or enter a larger port number to specify a port range. 3.Trigger Traffic Protocol Type Select the trigger traffic type. Open Port Specify all the ports to be opened. It's content could be: A single port only. A port range only. Start open port number and end port number should be separated by "-" . Combined several single port and several port ranges. Each single port or port range should be separated by "," . Open Traffic Protocol Type Select the open traffic type. • How to "eject" non-existing USB drive from Windows 7 host?

  I use a USB key which is encrypted with BitLocker to store various data. I keep that key with me all the time. What happens all the time is that I send my home computer to hibernate without ejecting the USB key first. Then I unplug the key and take it with me to work. When I get home, I resume my Windows session and even though the key is not plugged in, the drive still appears as mounted on the system. I can also unmount the non-existing device with mountvol, but that only removes the drive letter. Windows will still think the device is plugged in. When I plug the key in, nothing happens. The device's class ID is listed in mountvol output, but the device is not listed in the Disk Management panel.

  I originally posted this on SuperUser because I discovered this behaviour on my home computer, but this seems to be a general issue on UEFI systems, thus I'm posting here too; I also hope someone here can shed some light on what's going on. Italian version of Windows 7 x64 SP1, same installation media used for both situations. When running on BIOS systems, the boot manager is fully localized, both for the loading screen and for the F8 boot menu.   Is there a device, that works without a driver, you just connect it as usb, and receive any signal sent to it as if it were COM Port wired connection? For example, such a device that gets data sent to it by Wi-Fi network or Bluetooth and resends it to the USB. Of course it has to be set up once (network name, password etc) and for this purpose you need a driver, but once it is set up, you can use it at any computer without a driver. I have a Bluetooth USB, but I think it can't work without a driver. By just connecting it to any computer you can't find it in device list on another bluetooth device (as phone, etc).

• When using software RAID and LVM on Linux, which IO scheduler and readahead settings are honored?

  In the case of multiple layers (physical drives - md - dm - lvm), how do the schedulers, readahead settings, and other disk settings interact? Imagine you have several disks (/dev/sda - /dev/sdd) all part of a software RAID device (/dev/md0) created with mdadm. Each device (including physical disks and /dev/md0) has its own setting for IO scheduler (changed like so) and readahead (changed using blockdev). When you throw in things like dm (crypto) and LVM you add even more layers with their own settings. For example, if the physical device has a read ahead of 128 blocks and the RAID has a readahead of 64 blocks, which is honored when I do a read from /dev/md0? Does the md driver attempt a 64 block read which the physical device driver then translates to a read of 128 blocks? Or does the RAID readahead "pass-through" to the underlying device, resulting in a 64 block read? The same kind of question holds for schedulers? Do I have to worry about multiple layers of IO schedulers and how they interact, or does the /dev/md0 effectively override underlying schedulers?
