• What would cause a single working website to not work on 1 out of 5 devices on a network?

  There is a specific website that loads up without problem on all machines on my network (both wired and wireless) except one laptop. This laptop is a Windows 7 machine that was just recovered using the recovery partition, so it is fresh. The site will not load in Firefox 3.6 or IE 8. The website is http://www.weightwacthers.com The site loads fine on my desktop, iPhone, and Droid, but not the laptop. In all my years in this business I've honestly never seen this happen. Also, 'Is it down for me or everyone' reports that it is indeed only me. What would cause this to happen?

• Best way to "stream" music / video to my HDTV from my pc?

  My requirement is simple: I have a laptop and a desktop at home that I often use for various media (music, videos etc.) and I want to know what the best (quickest, most seamless, best quality etc) solution for sending this media to my HDTV (and connected sound system). An example would be I'm listening to some music from youtube on my laptop in my living room and want to quickly send it to my tv (which has a sound system) so that I don't have to listen to it through my laptop. I mainly use linux (but a windows dependent solution would be ok too if its the best option). I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Oh and a wireless solution would be best.

• External speakers no longer working

  We have a Windows Vista laptop. On Monday we hooked it up to external speakers, as we always do, and they worked fine. On Tuesday, we did the same but then the speakers did not work. Weirdly, the laptop internal speaker does work. Nothing was changed between Monday and Tuesday. What happened and, more importantly, how can it be fixed? BTW we tested with other speakers (and cable) and that didn't help. So it seems like a laptop issue.

• Windows 7/8 can't connect to an N Router

  I have a router running OpenWRT backfire, with N and A/B/G being broadcast. A linux laptop, and a Mac laptop can see the N network and connect to it (or at least they could last weekend). But there is now a Windows 7 Desktop with a B/G/N wireless card, and a Windows 8 Laptop with a B/G/N wireless card that can't see the N network only the B/G broadcast. The B/G and N have different SSID's and Encryption ( WEP and WPA2 PSK respectively ). The N SSID isn't even visible. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot further? • Intercepting LAN network traffic via WiFi

  Let's get straight to the point. This is my fictive network architecture: My question is: Would it be possible for Laptop B to intercept traffic sent and received by Laptop A? Please note that B only has WiFi access and no physical control over Router B. Furthermore, Router A and B create different wireless networks with different encryption keys. If both shared the same wireless network or Laptop B had LAN-access to Router B, the answer would be trivial, but I'm not sure how the answer turns out in this scenario :-/ Thanks for your valuable help!

• Cloning Fresh Windows 7 with external HDD, DVD or CDs?

  I want to create Windows installation disk (not necessarily CD) from my Windows 7 Pro laptop, not sure what it actually means here. The material is about 50-60GB, requiring about 12 pcs of 5GB disk (not going to happen, too much work to use them later). I have the Windows serial on the laptop bottom and this is so-called firm -laptop (no idea what it actually mean, better warranty and some instant support thing apparently). Now how to do the clone with external material such as DVDs? how can I create mock-windows-installation medium or some real windows-installation medium? I am now not sure whether Windows offers W7 -installations medium online, well my W -peer mentioned some MSDAA -something. • Encrypt two drives with Truecrypt with password before boot

  i'm using laptop and PC with single HDD with full disk encryption. I know how works truecrypt on single drive because i use it everyday. My second laptop has 2 HHDs. My question is how to encrypt first 128GB SSD and second 1TB HDD in same way. I have multiple applications installed on second drive so i want to have it accessible during boot in ex. Steam in installed on second drive and it starts with windows. How to do it? can i encrypt two drives in truecrypt and unlock it via password before boot? • USB 3.0 hub; what can it power?

  I own an Asus UX31A laptop, equipped with 2 USB 3.0 ports. I would like to connect several USB devices to one of these ports, using a USB 3.0 hub. 1) Am I correct in assuming the Asus "USB Charger+" commercial blurb corresponds to the USB 3.0 standard "Battery Charging Specification 1.2", and furthermore inferring that the laptop can deliver 1.5A through a USB port? 2) Does a powered external USB 3.0 hard drive draw on the USB power lines? 3) I would like to connect the aforementionned drive, an android phone, and a 200mA rated optical mouse to an unpowered USB 3.0 hub, itself plugged into the laptop. • Sync 2 hard drives without being connected at the same time (Mac)

  Hi, I've got a 2TB hard drive at home and one at work. I use my laptop to connect to them. I want these 2 hard drives to be exactly the same. But these hard drives will never be connected at the same time. Is this possible? It means that my laptop needs to track the changes AND copy all new files to its hard drive temporarily. My laptop should act as an intermediate between the 2 external hard drives. There are lots of syncing options if both drives are connected at the same time, but there seems to be no solution for my specific problem. Any ideas? FYI: I use a Mac.

• What software can I use to co-ordinate a projector screen?

  When I connect my laptop to a projector, it shows everything that is going-on on my computer. However, I want want to show only certain things to users ( like videos, images, etc ). It would be good if my mouse-motions could be hidden as well. So is there any software using which I can give presentations without sharing my screen with the projector ( that is, it shows what I want it to show rather than mirroring what's going on in my laptop screen ) ?I've serached Google a lot and haven't found a solution as yet. • Hard disk failure. Can I recover my "move"d folders?

  I am in the process of moving all my files from an old laptop to new one. I just moved 11gb of data from my old laptop to a hard drive (external) and then upon moving it out to the new hard drive, the hard drive is getting a CRC (Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check). Now I am looking for a solution to recover the files that I moved on my old laptop (not the external). I understand they they are just marked for potential overwriting to free up space. I was getting ready to test out GetDataBack, but it says to install it on a healthy windows and use the recover-needed drive as an external. However, I don't want to turn off my computer without first getting the okay since it is in a "moved" state. Please help! What can I do to recover the Moved files. I haven't touched the computer since it has been moved. What can I use to recover them?

• Why does MS-DOS tells me I need extended memory and thinks a file is read-only? [closed]

  I am running a .COM file on a MS-DOS 6.22 boot USB drive When I run it on my laptop the program works fine but when I run it on my desktop I get error 40 not enough extended memory. When I go to the memory tab in GUI I try to switch none to auto, but I get the error "This file might be read-only". It's not read-only, when I put it on my desktop I change the settings and the new settings are in a .pif I can't run .pif in MS-DOs so I need to Change the .exe not create a .pif. Change the amount of extended memory all files have on my MS-DOS. On my laptop there is no memory tab, the only real difference is my laptop is x64. Thanks for helping but I think teh x64 bit has nothing to do with it I dont eve nthink iits in 64 bit mode because Im using a boot USB. What i need to is listed above, thanks for helping.

• Do I have to reinstall Mac OS in case something goes wrong during a Windows Boot Camp install?

  I have a Macbook laptop running Snow Leopard, there's absolutely no information on the laptop, just a few unimportant files on it, I wanted to use Boot Camp Assistant (version 3) to create a partition and install Windows on it to run Windows alongside Mac OS. My CD/DVD drive doesn't work at all so I'm gonna have to mount Windows on a USB stick and install it from there. My question is, when I start Boot Camp it asks me to back up my files but I have nothing to back up, I was just wondering, in case I go through with the Windows install and something goes wrong do I have to reinstall Snow Leopard? My Snow Leopard install DVD can't be read by the laptop that's why I ask, I wouldn't know what to do if I had to reinstall it.

• Displaying X11 Apps on Windows 7

  I installed a product called xming, a light weight X11 server product on Windows 7 laptop. From remote RHEL system I redirected display to Win7 laptop then launched X11 GUI app. I was not able to launch X11 apps and have them appear on laptop display as intended. To fix it I added -ac to the properties of xming launch desktop icon. I been searching through Windows and xming docs but can't find explanation. My guess is it is like xhost + on unix that allows connections from anybody. Can anybody explain why this worked?

As a solopreneur I have a laptop config : intel core2duo processor, 3Gb RAM and 250 GB RAM. Now we are planning to increase our team to 3 members. Will like your suggestions on the nest cost-effective step that I can take so that I can use the computing power of the existing laptop to act as a kind of server and then buy to more monitors where the new recruits can do the daily work on and they need to have different login id and access and they dont need access to all the files/applications as are available in my laptop. We use internet intensively to do our day to day activity. Please share you experience, whether you think this is a good ploy or there is any other more effective way of achieving the same result.

• Windows 7: Shared folder over wifi working for ONLY "Guests"

  Hi, I have a desktop and a laptop connected to same wifi router. Desktop is connected with wire and laptop with wifi. Both the system runs windows 7 and are on the same workgroup. I have shared some folders on desktop and can view the shared folder list on laptop under "network places". But when I try to open a folder, a prompt appears for username and password. When I enter BOTH username and password, It does not authenticate when I enter ONLY username, I get:- "Windows cannot access \WIn71\Setups you do not have permission to access ..." Now to get around this message I have to give access to "Guests" group on my desktop shared folder. Cant seem to figure out why It cant authenticate username with password. And giving access to "Guests" does not sounds safe!

• Check SSD stability before returning it as broken?

  I have the Transcend SSD 720 256GB 2,5" 7mm disk. And randomly I get disk IO in utorrent and large files copying to external will fail. I have removed it from my laptop since I need max stability. I use my laptop on exams. How can I really bench/make-it-sweat whilst connected to my desktop? I want to re-create some of the fails as I need proof if I am to return it. Firmware is updated. BIOS on laptop is updated. I could just completely nul the disk and then check for bad sectors, but is there anything else I could use for testing? Edit: It has 7 bad sector replacement operations. What does it mean?

• Does Asus F8SV supports 1920*1080 resolution through DVI output? [closed]

  Devices: Asus F8Sv Laptop (Windows 7 ultimate, GeForce 8600m GT, display driver is 301.42, detected and downloaded from nvidia.com, VGA and DVI output interface) Gateway 23 inches LCD monitor (VGA, DVI-D with HDCP, and HDMI input) 18 pins DVI cable, VGA cable, both new. Problems: When connect laptop to monitor by VGA, resolution is automatically adapted to 1920*1080; but when using DVI connection, resolution on monitor is fixed to 1024*768, which is lower than my laptop default 1280*800. The maximum resolution in windows control panel is only 1024*768, while the Nvidia control panel provides options 1920*1080p and 1920*1080i, but clicking apply button does not work, the resolution just can not change. Possibly reason I guess: GeForce 8600m GT does not support 1920*1080 resolution through DVI outputs. Can anyone confirm it or give the real reason? edit: Problem solved by buying a HDMI to DVI-D adapter. Using this adapter and a HDMI cable, I can now enjoy 1080p movie.

  Is there any good reason as to why factory restore partitions are generally much larger than they need to be? Examples I have found in my own experience: Dell XPS laptop Partition: 13.67 GB Used: 6.68 GB Dell Inspiron laptop Partition: 14.7 GB Used: 7.2 GB Toshiba laptop Partition: 15.3 GB Used: 9 GB In all cases, shrinking the partition to only slightly more than the Used space had no ill effects on future factory restorations. Why the exorbitant amount of extra space, given that neither of the three computers ever writes any data to the recovery partition? Is there a good reason I'm overlooking?

  I recently upgraded Ubuntu to the latest LTS edition on my work laptop, which I use as a LAMP development platform. The upgrade was from 12.4 to 14.4. Now I'm having trouble getting apache up and running again. I changed this temporarily to 777, but this made no difference, so I changed it back to 644. antonc@antonc-laptop:/etc/apache2$ ls -l total 80 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7115 Jan 7 2014 apache2.conf ... What do I need to do to get apache running again? Is the problem really with apache2.conf or some other setting? Should the conf file be owned by a user other than root?

• Bluetooth not working on an Alienware m14x r2

  on my alienware m14x r2 laptop with ubuntu 12.04.1 x64, the bluetooth interface is not working. WLAN works fine. I have a dualboot install with ubuntu & win 7 on this laptop. In win 7, the bluetooth interface works fine, because its all activated in BIOS. I have the killer wireless-n 1202 a/g/n interface with integrated bluetooth 4.0 in this laptop. • Grub not showing on startup for Windows 8.1 Ubuntu 13.10 Dual boot

  K im so a newbie to Ubuntu and i bought a Windows 8 pre-installed laptop last month. I updated to Windows 8.1 and then i thought about installing Ubuntu as a dual boot so i could mess around and learn more about it. So i followed a Youtube tutorial ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJfTvkgLqfQ ). And i got my stuff working fine. The first few times i booted i got the GRUB menu instead of my default HP Boot OS Manager, and i was able to select my OS. So i went to sleep and the next day i turned on my computer and the GRUB menu did not show up. I tried several times and it didnt automatically show up. In order for me to see the GRUB menu i had to turn on my PC and on start had to press ESC to pause startup and press F9 to get boot options. Then from there i had to pick from OS Boot, Ubuntu, Ubuntu (Yes there were two Ubuntus available) and a default EFI file thingy. When i click the first Ubuntu i get the GRUB Menu (I was too scared to try the second incase i screwed my laptop up) and i can safely load Ubuntu from there and use it (although i do have to increase my brightness everytime i load Ubuntu bec it somehow reduces my brightness to complete darkness on boot) So my problem here is why isnt my GRUB showing on boot, after it worked on the first day? I was on Windows 8.1 while typing this and if you have any questions or answers, i will happily answer or use them as a solution to the best of my abilities. BTW my laptop is a HP TouchSmart j-078CA.

  Happy Friday, everyone! Our tip this week is from an excellent white paper written by our own Greg King titled Oracle VM 3: Building a Demo Environment using Oracle VM VirtualBox. In it, Greg gives you everything you need to know to set up Oracle VM Server inside of Oracle VM VirtualBox for testing and demoing. The section we're highlighting below is on how to configure the network interfaces of your virtual machines: VirtualBox comes with a few different types of network interfaces that can be used to allow communication between the VM guests and the host operating system, including network interfaces that will allow the VM guests to communicate with local and wide area networks accessed from your laptop or personal computer. However, for the purpose of the demonstration environment we will limit the network communication to include access just between your desktop and the virtual machines being managed by VirtualBox. The install process for Oracle VM VirtualBox creates a single host-only network device on your laptop or personal computer. Using the host-only network device will allow you to open a browser on your desktop to access the Oracle VM Manager running within the VirtualBox VM guest. The device will only allow network traffic between the VM guests and your host operating system, but nothing outside the confines of your laptop or personal computer. We will need to add a second host-only network since the Oracle VM Server appliance has both eth0 and eth1 configured. You can choose to use eth1 on the Oracle VM Servers or not use them – the choice is yours. But, at least the host side network device will exist if you decide to use it.
