Of course, I'll interview carefully, check references, and run a background check. But you never know how things will work out. How do I limit my company's exposure if the guy I hire turns out to be evil? How do I avoid making him the single most powerful person in the organization?

• Printer monitor software across multiple workstations (AD integrated)

  I was asked to see if there is any kind of (free) software that allows multiple people in an office that use the same printer to see what jobs have finished recently, which are queued and which is printing. Main reason is that sometimes multiple people have the same task where they need to print some kind of form, and they are unsure whether or not their colleague has already printed the file. Because the printer is AD integrated, they only see a short message when printing, but they do not see a proper printer queue. A simple tray icon/tool would be perfect, no real graphical user interface is required. If this turns out to be too hard to find, I will attempt to write a simple application or script for the job, but since this is a low priority job I decided to ask here first before I start messing around with scripting which isn't my forte.   Background: DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=10.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=lucid DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 10.04 LTS" I've built nginx, and I'd like to use upstart to start it: nginx upstart script from the site: description "nginx http daemon" start on runlevel 2 stop on runlevel 0 stop on runlevel 1 stop on runlevel 6 console owner exec /usr/sbin/nginx -c /etc/nginx/nginx.conf -g "daemon off;" respawn I get "unknown job" when i try to use initctl to run it, which I just learned apparently means there is an error, ( what's wrong with "Error" to describe errors?) Can someone point me in the right direction ? I've read the documentation , as it is, and it seems kind of sparse for a SysV init replacement... but whatever just need to add this job to the list, run it, and get on with what's left of my life... Any tips? EDIT: initctl version init (upstart 0.6.5)

• Mac OS X: at command not working

  I am going to schedule a job by using at command. Here I tried the following command: $ at now + 1 minute echo 'Test at command' <EOD> I saw the job is scheduled by using at -l. However, I saw no echo out. I guess that I may need to add user to at.allow file. I cannot find at.allow in my Mac (Snow Leopard). Not sure what I need to do to test this at command?

  I downloaded java SDK from Google App Engine. I tried running appcfg.cmd from command prompt. But it gives this error. Error opening registry key 'Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment' Error: could not find java.dll Error: could not find Java 2 Runtime Environment. All i want to do with Google App Engine is to set up cron jobs with 1 minute frequency. I don't want to make any application in Google App Engine. I just want the cron job set up. Is there any way to set up cron job in Google App Engine without using the java SDK ???

• Unable to connect to Amazon EC2 without using PPK file

  I have a build job which runs on Hudson and synchronizes content from an Amazon AWS server. This is written in shell I have a PPK file given to me which can establish the connectivity Here is the problem. The build script I use doesn't establish the connectivity in the code. So, I manually connect the host thro the PPK file using Putty and then run the job, then it works fine I am new to the shell stuff. Could someone help me out by suggesting how I can establish connectivity using the PPK file in the shell so I do not have to do it manually thro Putty? Thanks, Krishna

• concatenate files including path in header - path contains spaces

  I have to concatenate a number of files in a directory structure which contains spaces in the folder names looking like this: ./CH 0000100014/A10/11XT/11xt#001.csv find . -name "*.csv" -type f -print0 | xargs -0 cat > allmycsv.txt does the job, however now I need to include the information contained in the path, i.e. CH 0000100014/A10/11XT as a header of each inputfile to cat. find . -name "*.csv" -type f -print0 | xargs -0 -I % sh -c 'echo %; cat %' >allmycsv.txt would do the job, if I had no spaces in the path, but in my case, cat does not get along with the space in the path name.   I have a Maintenance Plan that is suppose to go through the BACKUP folder and remove all .bak older than 5 days. When I run the job, it gives me a success message but older .bak files are still present. I've tried the step at the following question: SQL Maintenance Cleanup Task 'Success' But not deleting files Result is column IsDamaged = 0 I've verified with the following question and this is not my issue: Maintenance Cleanup Task(s) running 'successfully' but not deleting back up files. I've also tried deleting the Job and Maintenance Plan and recreating, but to no avail. Any ideas?

  Hello, qstat manual says -j [job_list] Prints either for all pending jobs or the jobs con- tained in job_list various information. The job_list can contain job_ids, job_names, or wildcard expression sge_types(1). i.e. qstat -j job_name should work. But whenver I try i get an error saying qstat -j test_20100203_01 ERROR: job-ID should be an integer Any idea if this should have worked. I can also use: qstat | grep test_20100203_01 but the problem is that qstat lists the shortened job name (something like test_2010020 and not test_20100203_01). Please advise.

  I am working with tomcat6 and HUDSON, when I run the hudson job it is running as tomcat6 user, what I want to know is there any way to change the HUDSON user as my system login user instead of tomcat6 so that I can run hudson job as my system user. I just want to know whether it is possible or not and why and how? I tired editing /etc/init.d/tomcat6 and changed tomcat6 user and grop as my login id, and the restarted the tomcat. Still the hudson jobs are running as tomcat6 user.Am i did the righ thing, if so why it is not working. Thanks in advance

The app worked fine, but the workers were never working. I'd like upstart to do something (send an email) if it can't start this job, since it's not entirely obvious if everything went alright. Is there something built into upstart to handle this, or do I have to get creative?

• low performance on HPC cluster (sge) when running multiple jobs

  O know this is a long-shot but I'm clueless here. I'm running several computer simulations on High Performance Computation cluster (HPC) of oracale grid engine (sge). A single job runs at a certain speed (roughly 80 steps per second) when I add jobs to the machine, at a certain treshhold, the speed is recuded by two. On one machine (I don't know the cpu kind) the treshold is 11 jobs for 16 cpu's. On another one with the same number and kind of cpu's , the treshold is 8. I thought at first that this is a memory issue but each job takes about 60MB - 100MB and I have 16GB of ram on each of those machine. Did any of you encountered such a problem? is there any way to analyz this? Thanks.

• Is there a way to customise PPD distribution of printer drivers effectively with Mac Os X server?

  Hi, we have two network printers shared via our 10.5.8 Mac Os Server machine. They have drivers provided by the manufacturer that allow job logging (printing with a print code). I've installed said drivers on the server, but when we distribute the printer on our Mac Os clients (using add printer via bonjour) it deploys older drivers that don't support Job Logging. Is there a way to update the store of print drivers (cups drivers?) on the server so it distributes the updated drivers, rather than the older one?

  SQL Server 2005: I have a problem with scheduling a Maintenance Plan (MP) with 3 subplans (SP). SP1 is scheduled to run hourly, SP2 daily at 7.00 and SP3 on sundays at 8.00 Reading MP history I see that what happened (I know it seems crazy) is: 11: SP1 runs and executes all the tasks of SP1 SP2 and SP3 12: SP2 runs and does the same 13: SP3 runs and does the same 14: SP1 runs and does the same From the job Activity monitor, SP1 has last run time at 14, SP2 and SP3 are never been executed. All of the SP are scheduled correctly in the Job Activity Monitor (SP2 for tomorrow at 7, SP3 for next sunday at 8) Do you have any idea what is happening? Thankx a lot Wentu

• IT Inventory Tracking

  What is a good tool to keep track of IT inventory? Systems that are installed and running, parts being ordered, that sort of thing. I'd love a central, web based system (preferably something we can customize) but my searching so far has resulted in a lot of dead open source projects that havn't been updated in a few years and poorly created commercial websites that don't do a very good job describing their product. The software doesn't have to be free or open source - a good commercial alternative is fine. It doesn't even need to be a web-based tool, that's just what I thought would be simplist to find and easiest to deploy. The number of assets that it will be tracking will be in the dozens, so it doesn't have to be a super high-end enterprise solution but it does need to do a better job than an excel sheet in a shared folder (which is our current "solution")

• Do I need a license to create pdf files? [closed]

  I hope this is the correct place where I could ask this question. My mother is an accountant with a degree in economics. She works as a freelancer and she needs some licenses for her job. The biggest problem is adobe acrobat standard, which costs 400€, quite a lot. I want understand if she must buy it to create pdf files or she can use some free (even for commercial use) programs that she has because of her job (the chamber of commerce provide some advantages to accountants). • How can I open a console application with a given window size?

  The application I want to start is MongoDB. If I would start it normally, it looks like this: I don't like the amount of line breaks and I have a lot of screen space, so I would like to utilize said space to get rid of the line breaks. I can change the size of the console window with MODE, so I wrote a batch file like this: @ECHO OFF MODE con:cols=140 lines=70 %~dp0mongodb\bin\mongod --dbpath %~dp0data --rest So far, so good. When I start this batch file, I get a larger window, as desired. But when I now press Ctrl+C to exit MongoDB, I get the annoying prompt: Terminate batch job (Y/N)? Which is useless, because the command I just exited out of was the last command in the batch job anyway and no matter what I answer, the result is the same. So, how can I get a larger console window for the application without having that prompt when I hit Ctrl+C?

  I once had a job offer from a company that wanted my workstation to be in the AC controlled, noisy server room with no natural light. I'm not sure what their motivation was. Possibly it made sense to them for me to be close to the servers, or possibly they wanted to save the desk space for other employees. I turned down the job (for many reasons, including the working environment). Is this a common practice? Do you work in your LAN room? How do you cope?

Every box has its own user auth using local /etc/passwd, etc. Users/Groups have differing uids/gids on each machine, and each machine has its own /home/ tree. (no central NAS /homes) My job is get get everything into an LDAP directory and use that for login auth. How do I get LDAP to deal with the differing uids/gids? Thanks.

• Why does a Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc appear every time I connect to Windows Server 2003 SBS?

  I've run into a weird, persistent issue regarding a remote desktop connection. Every time I successfully log into a server running Windows Server 2003 SBS, without taking any further action, after a few seconds a print job spontaneously appears on my machine, titled "Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc". The document is 4K, datatype RAW, processor "WinPrint". I've heard of people running into this issue before, but can't seem to hunt down a coherent solution. It's a minor annoyance, but I get annoyed when Windows complains about a print job that, as far as I know, came from nowhere. Any thoughts on why this would occur and how I could prevent it from happening?

• Ethernet port sleeping on PS3 running linux

  My lab has a PS3 running Ubuntu Linux 9.04 Server Edition. After a period of a few hours with no use, the Ethernet connection (eth0) seems to go to sleep, causing the connection to be lost. Pinging or trying to SSH into the machine results in no response. The fix I've been using is to access the machine locally and restart it (trying to bring eth0 down then up doesn't seem to correct it). I've tried setting up an hourly cron job that runs on the PS3 and pings another machine just to create network activity, but this doesn't seem to solve the problem either. Update: The solution was to run the above cron job much more frequently: every 10 minutes works.

• can't send with postfix but I can whith one user

  I have a postfix and dovecot server but when i try to send an email i get an time -out. Im trying to send with the email [email protected]. A telnet session isn't helping much ether. I get a blank screen. Local it's working fine. My smtp service is running on treadity.com:25. The strange thing is that the logs are completely empty with any info regarding sending emails. Receiving is working alright. Another strange thing is that i've send some message's and that it worked. But that is only with one email.
