• How to burn a CD-ROM from a Mac for Solaris

  I would like to burn a CD using a Mac (10.5) which I can then access from a Solaris 10 x86 machine. This partially works: Insert blank CD and let the Finder open it so it creates a "Recordable CD" window for it. Drag the files to be burned into the "Recordable CD" window Burn (there are no options except for speed) Then to mount in Solaris: mount -f hsfs -o ro /dev/dsk/foo /mnt/bar The problem here is that Solaris will see all the filenames as lower case and it will only allow each file name to contain one period (these are HSFS limitations). My guess is that the Mac is not burning the disc with the Rock Ridge extensions that allow for the full file names to be preserved. Is there some combination of burning tools/options and mount options that will make this work?

  In one line : is the following possible : Airport <- "osx bridge" - vbox-Host-only - vm's Virtualbox (3.1.4) setup : Host : Mac OS X 10.5 Guest : Ubuntu Linux adapter1 - Bridged (en1: Airport) : To give the vm access to internet and communicate when Airport is connected adapter2 - Host-Only (vboxnet0) : To enable host/guest communication when Airport is not connected I'd like to make it simpler and only keep adapter 2 (host-only) and relying on os x connection sharing/bridging I thought i could just keep the Host only configuration, and on the host go to internet sharing and select "share from airport" to vboxnet0 . Only to find out that vbox's virtual interface doesn't appear in the interfaces list on os x preferences. I know that on a linux host you could install something called bridge-utils and use that to bridge the two insterfaces. Is there any thing like that for Mac ?

  I'm having trouble finding PECL on a Mac OS X 10.6 machine. I'm using the default install of Apache and PHP for development and have installed MongoDB, however I can't work with Mongo/PHP without the mongo PECL extension. Is there a copy of PECL on a Mac or will I have to install it? If so, where is it? If not, do you know of a good tutorial for getting it up-and-running?   Recently my i-connection started to get laggy. Sometimes it disappears completely. ISP told me that someone steals my internet. Someone has managed to sniff my MAC address, kick me out and surf web in my place. So... • Citrix ICA Client on Mac shift key doesn't work as expected

  When I'm connected to a Windows XP computer from my Mac OS X 10.6 using the Citrix ICA Client, it seems that the shift key only works for the first letter typed after pressing shift. In order to type multiple uppercase letters, like ICA, I must either press caps lock, or press and release shift before each character. I've tried switching between standard and enhanced keyboard, as well as the 'Send Special Keys Unchanged' option, but none of these seem to affect the issue. The problem doesn't occur when I switch from the Citrix window to a regular Mac window.

To reproduce: Compose New Message in Mail.app Type in a group name from your Address Book The addresses from that group will populate the To: field in apparently random fashion FYI- You'd think that choosing Edit Distribution List… in Address Book would let you sort the list...but nope! • Compiling PHP with GD crashes with EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP) on PPC Mac

  First of all, I should say that I have searched the whole Internet for this problem but I couldn't find any solution yet. I have a Mac mini PowerPC (PPC) and I run Apache webserver (httpd-2.2.22) with PHP (5.4.0) and I do all the configure & compilation jobs by myself. If configure with: './configure' '--prefix=/usr/local/php5' '--mandir=/usr/share/man' '--infodir=/usr/share/info' '--sysconfdir=/etc' '--with-config-file-path=/etc' '--with-zlib' '--with-zlib-dir=/usr' '--with-openssl=/usr' '--without-iconv' '--enable-exif' '--enable-ftp' '--enable-mbstring' '--enable-mbregex' '--enable-sockets' '--with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql' '--with-pdo-mysql=/usr/local/mysql' '--with-mysqli=/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config' '--with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs' '--with-mcrypt' then the PHP works flawlessly. But if I add the GD module by adding these to the script above: '--with-gd' '--with-jpeg-dir=/usr/local/lib' '--with-freetype-dir=/usr/X11R6' '--with-png-dir=/usr/X11R6' '--with-xpm-dir=/usr/X11R6' the PHP gets configured and compiled without any errors but it causes EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP) (see the Crash Reporter log below) when I request a page which calls PHP module. It's obvious that something related to the GD module is causing this, probably FreeType module because it's present in the log but it may not be definite of course. When the PHP crashes (or more accurately, httpd) the CPU goes 100% for 10 to 15 seconds until it recovers. I need to use the GD module and keep the Mac mini PowerPC. • Using FastCGI for PHP on Mac OS X

  I have apache2 running on a Mac OS X (10.6) machine, and it is currently serving PHP pages fine, using php5_module but I would like to configure fastcgi_module to handle the php pages. I have tried using the configuration found on www.fastcgi.com but I get the following error: [warn] FastCGI: (dynamic) server "/Path/to/script.php" has failed to remain running for 30 seconds given 3 attempts, its restart interval has been backed off to 600 seconds [warn] FastCGI: server "/usr/bin/php" has failed to remain running for 30 seconds given 3 attempts, its restart interval has been backed off to 600 seconds I'm thinking this is because PHP has not been compiled with FastCGI, but seeing as it came with Mac OS X i'm not sure how to recompile it. Is this the problem? And if so, how do I recompile PHP with FastCGI?

• Monitoring whether Google Apps email address is reachable

  Backstory: I bungled things a bit the other day, and inadvertantly deleted the DNS overrides for my domain including the MX records that point to Google Apps, causing 2 days of lost emails. What I want: I want to be able to monitor the email address/account so that I can be alerted if for any reason something has gone wrong and emails aren't arriving. Thoughts: I was thinking there might be a way to test the email without having to send an actual message. Does this exist? This wouldn't help if the DNS has reset itself to a different mailserver would it? The other idea was sending periodic emails to check the address it working. How would you automate this? You'd need to somehow check that the email address had arrived as well as checking if it had bounced. Are there any scripts that exist that would do something like this? What would be the best method? Maybe a combination of checking that the MX records for the domain are set to what they're supposed to be set to, and sending automatic test emails to check that things are still functioning on the Google Apps end?

  Somewhat predictably, removing iTunes on Mac OS X is a long arduous process, described at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1224 — which I have followed. As far as I can tell, I have purged every trace of the accursed iTunes from my system. Yet Software Update repeatedly prompts me with updates for iTunes, which I don't want anything to do with, despite my saying "Not now" each time. How can I convince Software Update to leave me alone, and never bother me with mention of iTunes again? I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.4 Build 10F569, and the update being offerred is iTunes 9.2.1. (Note: Not a duplicate of OS X: why Software Update suggests to update removed application?, whose accepted answer is simply to follow the instructions I mentioned above.)

• Autodiscover service seems to reply with User Principal Name instead of email address

  After this latest round of Windows updates (on 1/11/11, in fact) my Exchange 2007 server of course rebooted. This may have had the side effect of making any changes I'd inadvertently made take effect. Since then, the Autodiscover service in Exchange 2007 from Outlook 2007 seems to reply with the User Principal Name ([email protected] instead of [email protected]). I'm specifically seeing this from within the "Test Email AutoConfiguration" tool in Outlook (the UPN appears in the first text box labeled "E-mail") and when creating a new profile in Outlook. If I disregard the UPN and instead fill in my email address, Autodiscover works as expected and I can connect without issue. I've confirmed using ADSI Edit that the SMTP email address is properly set for my users. I even went a bit crazy and set the UPN to the email address using ADSI Edit. I've re-installed the Client Access role on the server in question. Exchange server is Server 2008, 64-bit of course. Clients are mostly XP 32-bit, though the issue happens from a Windows 7 machine as well.

• Postfix "loops back to myself" error on relay to another IP address on same machine

  I'm trying to relay all mail for one domain "ourdomain.tld" from Postfix running on port 2525 of one interface to another SMTP server running on port 25 of another interface on the same machine. However, when a message is received for that domain, we're getting a "mail for loops back to myself" error. Below are netstat and postconf, the contents of our /etc/postfix/transport file, and the error that Postfix is logging. (The high bytes of each IP address are XXXed out.) • Location Services are always disabled in Mac OS X Lion

  A simple location services program was working fine on my machine and suddenly stopped working. Upon further exploring the problem, I realized that some process has disabled location services in System Preferences » Security & Privacy » Privacy. I checked Enable Location Services, but again it got disabled automatically. After some research I found that it's not just my program, even built-in system functions are also failing because of this problem for example System Preferences » Date & Time » Time Zone failed to get the current location.   Having configured a virtual machine for Ubuntu on VirtualBox on my mac air I need to install Ubuntu OS itself. I have selected the hardrive as the primary boot device and the network as the secondary boot device, so I am not prompted to install an Ubuntu disk at boot time. It attempts to netboot but is unable to locate Ubuntu and cannot find anywhere in the configuration where I can explicitly specify where to find and Ubuntu image, so assume it reverts to some default location and fails. Has anybody out there ever successfully installed ubuntu on virtual box on their Mac Air? What steos did you take to get it right?

  Ok I have an interesting & very frustrating problem happening. I'm going to explain it the best I can. I work as a graphic designer & web designer on a mac and have a Comcast internet connection that comes through a Comcast branded router (SMC8014) which then ties into an Airport Extreme Base Station which runs my office network. I run OS 10.5.7 and also run Parallels 4.0.3 (running Windows XP) for testing websites in Internet Explorer and so on. Ok, so that the basic background. Here's my issue. I've been collaborating an ecommerce website with another designer/developer and when testing the site on the PC side we have started to run into some sort of network problem. The site is https if that matters at all I suspect it may. Basically when I run parallels for testing I am constantly having to restart the router in order to connect to the test site (it's hosted). Funny thing is I can access the rest of the internet fine, just not this site I'm working on until I restart the router (It's sorta like the site is timing out). This never happens when just running the Mac side of things. It only becomes an issue when Parallels is open and I am doing page refreshes while making css or HTML edits via something like Coda or CSS edit (connected to the hosting server via ftp). The real problem is that once the problem starts I only get about 2 or 3 page loads before I have to restart the router again. It's absolutely crippling. I cannot get any work done when I have to restart the router every couple of minutes. So, if you think this problem is isolated to me, the answer is no. The designer/developer I'm collaborating with has an office a couple miles away and experiences very similar problems under slightly different setup. He also has Comcast as his internet provider and connects his router to an Airport and primarily works on a mac. The main difference is that rather than using a visualizer like parallels to test the website on the PC he uses a real live PC that is on his network. Once he fire up the PC to do testing he runs into the same issue described above. After a couple of page refreshes in Internet Explorer or other browser on the PC the site becomes unresponsive and the router has to get restarted. Any thoughts on what is going on here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
