  • Key logging in .NET

    - by Moshe
    Is it possible to write a key logger in Visual Basic.NET? Is this the right language to be using? So far, I've gotten a console app to read input and append to a file. 1)How can I make a .NET program "catch" all keyboard input? 2)How do I make a process not show up in Task Manager? This is not for a virus, but rather a parental control program for a specific clientele. No malicious intent here.

  • Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

    - by Delirium tremens
    I'm trying to find a parental control for Ubuntu that turns adult site words into *. I have tried webcontentcontrol (doesn't even ask me to set a password), mobicip (doesn't even get listed in package names). My family can see my adult bookmark names and that's really embarrassing. I tried sudo apt-get remove webcontentcontrol sudo apt-get -f install sudo apt-get upgrade sudo pkill webcontentcontrol sudo apt-get remove webcontentcontrol but still can't uninstall it. Googling for that error message resulted in a solution that is first said dangerous, later said wrong. After sudo apt-get remove webcontentcontrol, I always get the error message "Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)". What should I do? The full error message is in brazilian portuguese. Should I post it anyway? I have just installed nanny, but while webcontentcontrol is installed, it doesn't load.

Is this filter drop downs something customizable or is it a feature only available for system entities (like acitivity)? Is this functionality provided because Activity entity have N:1 relationship with Type of Behavior = System? can we provide the same or similar functionality by using Type of behavior = Parental!?!? • Can I disable chrome's auto translate function for visitors to a given page on my site?

    - by Drew Noakes
    I know how to disable this feature for pages that I visit, but what I'm looking for is a way to tell other user's Chrome browsers not to offer translation a particular page on my site. Is there some kind of meta tag I can use? Alternatively, can I indicate that a particular element on the page should not be translated? Reason: The controls which slide down from the top of the page cause my page to resize, which changes the content, which makes the control slide up, which resizes the page, which changes the content, which causes the controls to slide back in. Rinse and repeat. The page dances. The page itself is a map, and the content it wants to translate are all proper names and shouldn't be translated anyway. If alternate names exist in other languages, I provide them myself. Generally I'm against taking away features from the browser that users might like, but in this case it really makes sense. So please don't answer saying that I shouldn't be doing this. I've weighed up the options.

  • Family server setup [closed]

    - by Manny
    Hi all, I really hope some of you can give me some direction. I have setup a linux server at home and through samba I can access files from different computers in my home. I would like to use this server as a file-server for my family (brothers, sisters and parents who all live in their own homes). I really like the way it is set up right now with user and permission controls, but I've read that it is bad idea to open up the samba port to the world. The requirements are simple: 1) it should be easy to access, by using standard web browsers or mounting the drive (shouldn't have to use any VPN setup or use putty etc) 2) should be somewhat secure. We just want to share family pictures instead of putting them on facebook or picasa or other web server, nothing top secret. Here is what I've looked into: 1)Webdav. It seems decent but seems like it windows7 doesn't like it very much, even with digest mode authentication. User controls and permissions are not as flexible as samba (or at least to my knowledge). I really like the user and group permissions in samba, but if I could live with webdav if it worked seamlessly with windows, it should just work shouldn't it? 2) I read somewhere to stay away from ftp as it is outdated and that there are newer and better internet file-server setups? Was that a reference to webdav? I am so confused, please help... Manny

  • No sound out of headphone port on laptop

    - by Thanatos
    I cannot get sound out of the headphone port on a laptop. Headphones are plugged in, and sound comes out of the internal speakers. Windows behaves normally (sound switches to headphones when headphones are inserted). It did work in Linux at one point, but something changed, we're just not sure what. Rebooting doesn't fix. This appears to occur whether or not PulseAudio is running. Things I've tried: Rebooting. No effect. Booting into Windows. It works properly, so probably not a hardware issue. All of alsamixer. My only controls are this: "Master" Volume bar & mutable, unmuted. Controls volume. "PCM" Volume bar only. 100%. "S/PDIF" Mutable only, currently muted, has no effect. "S/PDIF" Default PCM", Mutable only, currently unmuted, has no effect. Killing PulseAudio. No effect. (It also won't stay dead! Something appears to be restarting it, and I can't tell what, but it is annoying as fuck.) alsactl init 0, no effect. sudo rm -f /var/lib/alsa/asound.state, no effect. General system info: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Toshiba Satellite T135D-S1324 lspci says I have: 00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) 01:05.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RS780 Azalia controller Some edits: Yes, the headphones are in all the way. This works in Windows: You plug headphones in, the internal speakers stop making noise, and noise comes out the head phones. Windows says I only have two sound cards: the HDMI port (which I don't care about) and the "sound card", which it claims is a "Conexant Pebble High Definition SmartAudio" In Windows, both the internal speakers and the headphone jack show up as one soundcard, which in my experience, is typical. (This is a laptop)

  • WPF animation: binding to the "To" attribute of storyboard animation.

    - by bozalina
    Hi, I'm trying to create a button that behaves similarly to the "slide" button on the iPhone. I have an animation that adjusts the position and width of the button, but I want these values to be based on the text used in the control. Currently, they're hardcoded. Here's my working XAML, so far: <CheckBox x:Class="Smt.Controls.SlideCheckBox" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:local="clr-namespace:Smt.Controls" xmlns:System.Windows="clr-namespace:System.Windows;assembly=PresentationCore" Name="SliderCheckBox" mc:Ignorable="d"> <CheckBox.Resources> <System.Windows:Duration x:Key="AnimationTime">0:0:0.2</System.Windows:Duration> <Storyboard x:Key="OnChecking"> <DoubleAnimation Storyboard.TargetName="CheckButton" Storyboard.TargetProperty="(UIElement.RenderTransform).(TransformGroup.Children)[0].(TranslateTransform.X)" Duration="{StaticResource AnimationTime}" To="40" /> <DoubleAnimation Storyboard.TargetName="CheckButton" Storyboard.TargetProperty="(Button.Width)" Duration="{StaticResource AnimationTime}" To="41" /> </Storyboard> <Storyboard x:Key="OnUnchecking"> <DoubleAnimation Storyboard.TargetName="CheckButton" Storyboard.TargetProperty="(UIElement.RenderTransform).(TransformGroup.Children)[0].(TranslateTransform.X)" Duration="{StaticResource AnimationTime}" To="0" /> <DoubleAnimation Storyboard.TargetName="CheckButton" Storyboard.TargetProperty="(Button.Width)" Duration="{StaticResource AnimationTime}" To="40" /> </Storyboard> <Style x:Key="SlideCheckBoxStyle" TargetType="{x:Type local:SlideCheckBox}"> <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type local:SlideCheckBox}"> <Canvas> <ContentPresenter SnapsToDevicePixels="{TemplateBinding SnapsToDevicePixels}" Content="{TemplateBinding Content}" ContentTemplate="{TemplateBinding ContentTemplate}" RecognizesAccessKey="True" VerticalAlignment="Center" HorizontalAlignment="Center" /> <Canvas> <!--Background--> <Rectangle Width="{Binding ElementName=ButtonText, Path=ActualWidth}" Height="{Binding ElementName=ButtonText, Path=ActualHeight}" Fill="LightBlue" /> </Canvas> <Canvas> <!--Button--> <Button Width="{Binding ElementName=CheckedText, Path=ActualWidth}" Height="{Binding ElementName=ButtonText, Path=ActualHeight}" Name="CheckButton" Command="{x:Static local:SlideCheckBox.SlideCheckBoxClicked}"> <Button.RenderTransform> <TransformGroup> <TranslateTransform /> </TransformGroup> </Button.RenderTransform> </Button> </Canvas> <Canvas> <!--Text--> <StackPanel Name="ButtonText" Orientation="Horizontal" IsHitTestVisible="False"> <Grid Name="CheckedText"> <Label Margin="7 0" Content="{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType={x:Type local:SlideCheckBox}}, Path=CheckedText}" /> </Grid> <Grid Name="UncheckedText" HorizontalAlignment="Right"> <Label Margin="7 0" Content="{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType={x:Type local:SlideCheckBox}}, Path=UncheckedText}" /> </Grid> </StackPanel> </Canvas> </Canvas> <ControlTemplate.Triggers> <Trigger Property="IsChecked" Value="True"> <Trigger.EnterActions> <BeginStoryboard Storyboard="{StaticResource OnChecking}" /> </Trigger.EnterActions> <Trigger.ExitActions> <BeginStoryboard Storyboard="{StaticResource OnUnchecking}" /> </Trigger.ExitActions> </Trigger> </ControlTemplate.Triggers> </ControlTemplate> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> </CheckBox.Resources> <CheckBox.CommandBindings> <CommandBinding Command="{x:Static local:SlideCheckBox.SlideCheckBoxClicked}" Executed="OnSlideCheckBoxClicked" /> </CheckBox.CommandBindings> </CheckBox> And the code behind: using System.Windows; using System.Windows.Controls; using System.Windows.Input; namespace Smt.Controls { public partial class SlideCheckBox : CheckBox { public SlideCheckBox() { InitializeComponent(); Loaded += OnLoaded; } public static readonly DependencyProperty CheckedTextProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("CheckedText", typeof(string), typeof(SlideCheckBox), new PropertyMetadata("Checked Text")); public string CheckedText { get { return (string)GetValue(CheckedTextProperty); } set { SetValue(CheckedTextProperty, value); } } public static readonly DependencyProperty UncheckedTextProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("UncheckedText", typeof(string), typeof(SlideCheckBox), new PropertyMetadata("Unchecked Text")); public string UncheckedText { get { return (string)GetValue(UncheckedTextProperty); } set { SetValue(UncheckedTextProperty, value); } } public static readonly RoutedCommand SlideCheckBoxClicked = new RoutedCommand(); void OnLoaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { Style style = TryFindResource("SlideCheckBoxStyle") as Style; if (!ReferenceEquals(style, null)) { Style = style; } } void OnSlideCheckBoxClicked(object sender, ExecutedRoutedEventArgs e) { IsChecked = !IsChecked; } } } The problem comes when I try to bind the "To" attribute in the DoubleAnimations to the actual width of the text, the same as I'm doing in the ControlTemplate. If I bind the values to an ActualWidth of an element in the ControlTemplate, the control comes up as a blank checkbox (my base class). However, I'm binding to the same ActualWidths in the ControlTemplate itself without any problems. Just seems to be the CheckBox.Resources that have a problem with it. For instance, the following will break it: <DoubleAnimation Storyboard.TargetName="CheckButton" Storyboard.TargetProperty="(Button.Width)" Duration="{StaticResource AnimationTime}" To="{Binding ElementName=CheckedText, Path=ActualWidth}" /> I don't know whether this is because it's trying to bind to a value that doesn't exist until a render pass is done, or if it's something else. Anyone have any experience with this sort of animation binding?

  • How to customize and reuse a DataGridColumnHeader style?

    - by instcode
    Hi all, I'm trying to customize the column headers of a DataGrid to show sub-column headers as in the following screenshot: I've made a style for 2 sub-column as in the following XAML: <UserControl xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:data="clr-namespace:System.Windows.Controls;assembly=System.Windows.Controls.Data" xmlns:primitives="clr-namespace:System.Windows.Controls.Primitives;assembly=System.Windows.Controls.Data" xmlns:sl="clr-namespace:UI" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" x:Class="UI.ColumnHeaderGrid" mc:Ignorable="d"> <UserControl.Resources> <Style x:Key="SplitColumnHeaderStyle" TargetType="primitives:DataGridColumnHeader"> <Setter Property="Foreground" Value="#FF000000"/> <Setter Property="HorizontalContentAlignment" Value="Center"/> <Setter Property="VerticalContentAlignment" Value="Center"/> <Setter Property="IsTabStop" Value="False"/> <Setter Property="SeparatorBrush" Value="#FFC9CACA"/> <Setter Property="Padding" Value="4"/> <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="primitives:DataGridColumnHeader"> <Grid x:Name="Root"> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition/> <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto"/> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <Rectangle x:Name="BackgroundRectangle" Fill="#FF1F3B53" Stretch="Fill" Grid.ColumnSpan="2"/> <Rectangle x:Name="BackgroundGradient" Stretch="Fill" Grid.ColumnSpan="2"> <Rectangle.Fill> <LinearGradientBrush EndPoint=".7,1" StartPoint=".7,0"> <GradientStop Color="#FCFFFFFF" Offset="0.015"/> <GradientStop Color="#F7FFFFFF" Offset="0.375"/> <GradientStop Color="#E5FFFFFF" Offset="0.6"/> <GradientStop Color="#D1FFFFFF" Offset="1"/> </LinearGradientBrush> </Rectangle.Fill> </Rectangle> <Grid> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition/> <ColumnDefinition Width="1"/> <ColumnDefinition/> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <Grid.RowDefinitions> <RowDefinition/> <RowDefinition/> <RowDefinition/> </Grid.RowDefinitions> <TextBlock Grid.Row="0" Grid.ColumnSpan="3" Text="Headers" TextAlignment="Center"/> <Rectangle Grid.Row="1" Grid.ColumnSpan="3" Fill="{TemplateBinding SeparatorBrush}" Height="1"/> <TextBlock Grid.Row="2" Grid.Column="0" Text="Header 1" TextAlignment="Center"/> <Rectangle Grid.Row="2" Grid.Column="1" Fill="{TemplateBinding SeparatorBrush}" Width="1"/> <TextBlock Grid.Row="2" Grid.Column="2" Text="Header 2" TextAlignment="Center"/> <Path x:Name="SortIcon" Grid.Column="2" Fill="#FF444444" Stretch="Uniform" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Margin="4,0,0,0" VerticalAlignment="Center" Width="8" Opacity="0" RenderTransformOrigin=".5,.5" Data="F1 M -5.215,6.099L 5.215,6.099L 0,0L -5.215,6.099 Z "/> </Grid> <Rectangle x:Name="VerticalSeparator" Fill="{TemplateBinding SeparatorBrush}" VerticalAlignment="Stretch" Width="1" Visibility="{TemplateBinding SeparatorVisibility}" Grid.Column="1"/> </Grid> </ControlTemplate> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> </UserControl.Resources> <data:DataGrid x:Name="LayoutRoot"> <data:DataGrid.Columns> <data:DataGridTemplateColumn HeaderStyle="{StaticResource SplitColumnHeaderStyle}"> <data:DataGridTemplateColumn.CellTemplate> <DataTemplate> <Grid> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition/> <ColumnDefinition/> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <Border Grid.Column="0" BorderBrush="#FFC9CACA" BorderThickness="0,0,0,0"> <TextBlock Grid.Column="0" Text="{Binding GridData.Column1}"/> </Border> <Border Grid.Column="1" BorderBrush="#FFC9CACA" BorderThickness="1,0,0,0"> <TextBlock Grid.Column="0" Text="{Binding GridData.Column2}"/> </Border> </Grid> </DataTemplate> </data:DataGridTemplateColumn.CellTemplate> </data:DataGridTemplateColumn> </data:DataGrid.Columns> </data:DataGrid> Now I want to reuse & extend this style to support 2-6 sub-column headers but I don't know if there is a way to do this, like ContentPresenter "overriding": <Style x:Key="SplitColumnHeaderStyle" TargetType="primitives:DataGridColumnHeader"> <Setter property="Template"> <Setter.Value> ... <ContentPresenter Content="{TemplateBinding Content}".../> ... </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> <Style x:Key="TwoSubColumnHeaderStyle" BasedOn="SplitColumnHeaderStyle"> <Setter property="Content"> <Setter.Value> <Grid 2x2.../> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> <Style x:Key="ThreeSubColumnHeaderStyle" BasedOn="SplitColumnHeaderStyle"> <Setter property="Content"> <Setter.Value> <Grid 2x3.../> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> Anyway, please help me on these issues: Given the template above, how to support more sub-column headers without having to create new new new new template for each? Assume that the issue above is solved. How could I attach column names outside the styles? I see that some parts, properties & visualization rules in the XAML are just copies from the original Silverlight component's style, i.e. BackgroundGradient, BackgroundRectangle, VisualStateManager... They must be there in order to support default behaviors or effects but... does anyone know how to remove them, but keep all the default behaviors/effects? Please be specific because I'm just getting start with C# & Silverlight. Thanks.

  • Native ComboBox not displaying choices correctly

    - by anothershrubery
    EDIT: It seems that ListPicker is the way to go but I have had further problems with that detailed Microsoft.Phone.Controls.Toolkit ListPicker throws XamlParseException I have the following ComboBox in code: <ComboBox x:Name="Result" Grid.Column="6" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" Foreground="Black" Background="White"> <ComboBoxItem Content="Win" /> <ComboBoxItem Content="Place" /> <ComboBoxItem Content="Lose" /> </ComboBox> But it does not display as I would have expected. When you drop down the ComboBox the options don't appear, it's just like empty items. See below: However, when an item is selected, it displays correctly and the correct index/item is returned. See below: I'm sure there is something simple I have missed but can't put my finger on it. EDIT: Ok I am posting the full code for this. I have a user control, OddsRow, that looks like this: <UserControl xmlns:toolkit="clr-namespace:Microsoft.Phone.Controls;assembly=Microsoft.Phone.Controls.Toolkit" x:Class="MojoPinBetOddsCalculator.OddsRow" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" FontFamily="{StaticResource PhoneFontFamilyNormal}" FontSize="{StaticResource PhoneFontSizeNormal}" Foreground="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}" d:DesignHeight="480" d:DesignWidth="480"> <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="{StaticResource PhoneChromeBrush}"> <Grid.RowDefinitions> <RowDefinition Height="70"/> </Grid.RowDefinitions> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="50*"></ColumnDefinition> <ColumnDefinition Width="70*"></ColumnDefinition> <ColumnDefinition Width="30*"></ColumnDefinition> <ColumnDefinition Width="70*"></ColumnDefinition> <ColumnDefinition Width="70*"></ColumnDefinition> <ColumnDefinition Width="70*" ></ColumnDefinition> <ColumnDefinition Width="100*"></ColumnDefinition> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <TextBlock x:Name="RowNumber" Grid.Column="0" VerticalAlignment="Center" HorizontalAlignment="Center"></TextBlock> <TextBox x:Name="OddsNumerator" Grid.Column="1" Width="90" Height="70" HorizontalAlignment="Center" TextAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" MaxLength="3" InputScope="TelephoneNumber"></TextBox> <TextBlock x:Name="Slash" Grid.Column="2" Text="/" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center"></TextBlock> <TextBox x:Name="OddsDenominator" Grid.Column="3" Width="90" Height="70" VerticalAlignment="Center" TextAlignment="Center" MaxLength="3" HorizontalAlignment="Center" InputScope="TelephoneNumber"></TextBox> <CheckBox x:Name="EachWay" Grid.Column="4" VerticalAlignment="Center" HorizontalAlignment="Center" Margin="10,0,0,0" /> <CheckBox x:Name="Place" Grid.Column="5" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" BorderThickness="0" Width="71" Margin="10,0,0,0" Padding="0" /> <ComboBox x:Name="Result" Grid.Column="6" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" Foreground="Black" Background="White"> <ComboBoxItem Content="Win" /> <ComboBoxItem Content="Place" /> <ComboBoxItem Content="Lose" /> </ComboBox> </Grid> </UserControl> And it is displayed in the MainPage like so: <phone:PhoneApplicationPage xmlns:my="clr-namespace:MojoPinBetOddsCalculator" x:Class="MojoPinBetOddsCalculator.MainPage" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:phone="clr-namespace:Microsoft.Phone.Controls;assembly=Microsoft.Phone" xmlns:shell="clr-namespace:Microsoft.Phone.Shell;assembly=Microsoft.Phone" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignWidth="480" d:DesignHeight="768" FontFamily="{StaticResource PhoneFontFamilyNormal}" FontSize="{StaticResource PhoneFontSizeNormal}" Foreground="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}" SupportedOrientations="Portrait" Orientation="Portrait" shell:SystemTray.IsVisible="True"> <!--LayoutRoot is the root grid where all page content is placed--> <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="Transparent"> <Grid.RowDefinitions> <RowDefinition Height="Auto"/> <RowDefinition Height="*"/> </Grid.RowDefinitions> <!--TitlePanel contains the name of the application and page title--> <StackPanel x:Name="TitlePanel" Grid.Row="0" Margin="12,17,0,28"> <TextBlock x:Name="ApplicationTitle" Text="BET ODDS CALCULATOR" Style="{StaticResource PhoneTextNormalStyle}"/> <TextBlock x:Name="PageTitle" Text="calculate" Margin="9,-7,0,0" Style="{StaticResource PhoneTextTitle1Style}"/> </StackPanel> <!--ContentPanel -     - by Asian Angel
    With the continued increase in malware knowing when a website is trouble can save you from a painful experience. If you are looking to add a bit more security to your Chromium-based Browser then join us as we look at the SiteAdvisor for Chrome extension. SiteAdvisor for Chrome in Action Once you have installed the extension you should go into the options first. You can choose which style of warning that you would like to receive when encountering a “less then reputable” website. The default setting is for the “Toolbar Icon Warning” but can be easily changed to a full “Webpage Redirect”. Note: The “Toolbar Button/Icon” does not display a drop-down window when clicked on. Here is an example if you go with the default and receive the “Toolbar Icon Warning”. Once again the same website except with the full “Webpage Redirect” in effect…of the two options this is the recommended setting. Notice that details are provided for “why” the website is listed as “less than reputable”. An example of a website that is all good…nothing but checkmarks and green. Terrific! There may be those of you who would be more comfortable with a “double layer” of protection while browsing. As you can see here SiteAdvisor and WOT work nicely together. You can read more about WOT for Chrome here. Conclusion If you worry about “less than reputable” websites SiteAdvisor for Chrome can help provide a layer of security that will warn you when you are getting ready to “browse” into possible trouble. • Make Your Coworker’s Day in Ubuntu

    - by Trevor Bekolay
    It can be difficult to express your appreciation for your coworkers in person – what if they take it the wrong way, or think you’re fishing for a compliment of your own? If you use Ubuntu in your office, here’s a quick way to show your appreciation while avoiding the social pitfalls of face-to-face communication. Make sure their computer is locked An unlocked computer is a vulnerable computer. Vulnerable to malware sure, but much more vulnerable to the local office prankster, who thinks it’s hilarious to make a screenshot of your desktop, change your background to that screenshot, then hide all of your desktop icons. These incidents have taught us that you should lock your computer when taking a break. Hopefully your coworker has learned the same lesson, and pressed Ctrl+Alt+L before stepping out for a coffee. Leave a carefully worded message Now is your opportunity to leave your message of appreciation on your coworker’s computer. Click on the Leave Message button and type away! Click on Save. Wait, possibly in the shadows If you sit near your coworker, then wait for them to return. If you sit farther away, then try to listen for their footsteps. Eventually they will return to their computer and enter their password to unlock it. Observe smile Once they return to their desktop, they will be greeted with the message you left. Look to see if they appreciated the message, and if so, feel free to take credit. If they look annoyed, or press the Cancel button, continue on with your day like nothing happened. You may also try to slip into a conversation that you saw Jerry tinkering with their computer earlier. Conclusion Leaving your coworkers a nice message is easy and can brighten up their dull afternoon. We’re pretty sure that this method can only be used for good and not evil, but if you have any other suggestions of messages to leave, let us know in the comments! • Too Few Women in IT!

    - by Yolande
    Last year, only 1% of attendees at Devoxx were women . This year, Devoxx addressed the issue in a panel entitled "Why We Should Target Women." On the panel were Kim Ross, Régina ten Bruggencate, Trisha Gee, Antonio Goncalves and Claude Falguiére. The moderator was Martijn Verburg. The discussion focused on how to attract women to programming and how to get current women programmers to be more active in the community. The panelists agreed that the IT field should not just attract more women but also men of different ethnic backgrounds. The lack of women in programming is in part a cultural issue that differs from region to region. In developed countries, very few women work as programmers whereas in Brazil and India a lot of women pursue careers in IT.  Women in developed countries perceive the field as isolating and very few young women graduate in computer science.  This perception of isolation was based in reality decades ago, but that is no longer the case today. Main ideas discussed by the panel: - Parents should encourage their daughters to play with Lego and learn programming - More organizations should target girls in high schools and young women in university to expose them to programming.  Duchess organization is planning on being more involved with young girl events and mentoring. - Women tend to be more self-critical about their skills and are intimidated by high skill requirements in job advertisements. Companies should change job advertisements to get more women to interviews. - Panelists don't recommend affirmative action because women feel favored and lose credibility. They want to be judged for their skills. - Panelists recommend acting the same way when dealing with either female or male co-workers and managers - Women need mentors (men or women) to learn to become speakers at conferences and to promote themselves better - Men should be sensitive to the fact that women are alone at work to respond to men teasing. The balance of power at work is different from a social setting. - Men also experience discrimination on the job. It is more difficult for men to take time off when their children are sick, for example. Equal valuing of parental obligations could result in equal pay for women. • Network Your Computers & Devices: Step by Step

    - by The Geek
    If you’re looking for a great book to help you learn more about Windows home networking, there’s a new book on the market by our good friend Ciprian, and published by none other than Microsoft Press. Note: our friend Ciprian has been a guest contributor here on How-To Geek in the past, and he’s not only a geek that knows what he’s talking about, he’s also one of the more honest and decent people I’ve worked with. In his spare time, he runs the 7 Tutorials web site. The Book One of the great things about this book is that you aren’t limited to just Windows networking—it also explains how to connect Windows 7, XP, Vista, Mac OS X, and even Linux on the same network and share folders and devices between them. Everything in the book is written in a typical How-To Geek step-by-step format, with plenty of screenshots and pictures to help you through the process. Book Outline If you’re going to be spending some money on the book, you probably want to know what it’s all about, and since the Amazon page doesn’t give, well, much information at all, here’s the entire outline for you: Setting Up a Router and Devices Setting User Account on All Computers Setting Up Your Libraries on All Windows 7 Computers Creating the Network Customizing Network Sharing Settings in Windows 7 Creating the Homegroup and Joining Windows 7 Computers Sharing Libraries and Folders Sharing and Working with Devices Streaming Media Over the Network and the Internet Sharing Between Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 Computers Sharing Between Mac OS X and Windows 7 Computers Sharing Between Ubuntu Linux and Windows 7 Computers Keeping the Network Secure Setting Up Parental Controls Troubleshooting Network and Internet Problems It’s a great book, with loads of information, and compared to most tech books isn’t very expensive—only $19.79 for the paperback and $9.99 for the Kindle version. Well worth it, and hey, it’s an official Microsoft Press book—written by a How-To Geek guest author. • Process Rules!

    - by Ajay Khanna
    One of the key components of a process is “Business Rule”. Business rule takes many forms inside your process definition and in a way is a manifestation of your company’s business policy. Business rules inside the process are used for policy enforcement, governance, decision management, operations efficiency etc. Following are some basic types of rules that can be a part of your process. 1. Process conditions:  These are defined as the process gateways that determine a path process will take depending on the process parameters. For Example, if discount >10% go to approval path : if discount < 10% auto-approve order. 2. Data rules: These business rules are defined as facts in decision table or knowledge base. The process captures all required parameters and submits those to RETE based rules engine. Rules engine processes the data and returns the result back. For example, rules determining your insurance eligibility. 3. Event rules: Here the system is monitoring the various events and events patterns that are emerging inside the process or external to the process. You can define actions or alerts to be triggered when a certain pattern of events emerges over a specified time period. Such types of rules need Complex Event Processing and are used in applications like Credit Card Fraud detection or Utility Demand Response. 4. User Interface Rules: In order to add dynamic behavior to UI or to keep users from making mistakes and enforcing policy, another mechanism available is UI rules. They are evaluated as the end user is filling out the web forms. These may include enabling and disabling of UI as per business policy. An example could be, if the age of a user is less than 13 years, disable credit card field and enable parental approval required checkbox. Your process may include many of such rule types.
