• Cursor running wild, then crashes on an Asus G73sw

  The cursor sometimes goes wild, I get random clicks, the windows are resizing, the cursor disappears. In the worst case, clicks and keyboards are disabled. I've tried the solution given on doc.ubuntu-fr.org and add tu grub : i8042.nomux=1 i8042.reset=1 in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT But it didn't work What can I do ? Graphic card : Geforce GTX460M. Ubuntu : 11.10 (64 bits). Laptop Asus G73sw Interface : Unity (since 11.10) - didn't get this problem with Gnome before. Complement: when a window is resizing, it gets drag-boxes at every corner, center of sides and center of the window. • Ivy bridge i3 recognized as Xeon e3-1200

  The situation: I've got a Ivy bridge i3 3225 which is being recognized as a Xeon e3-1200 series cpu by Ubuntu 14.04 64bit. The problem: cpu fan makes more noise than necessary (under dual-boot Win8 the fans are off), cannot install the intel graphics drivers from 01.org. Goals: - find a fix for the load fans could be they are not CPU related, I've tried some fan controller packages, but they made no difference. - get the intel graphics to install (this now fails as xeon cpu's are not supported, I got the package working on a i5 laptop) - get to know some more about how hardware recognition works Tried so far: - a reinstall of Ubuntu, but it was recognized again as a Xeon cpu. - different fan control packages, but they either do not recognized the fans, or just keep fan speed to high. • Ubuntu 12.10 graphics does not work properly

  My graphic on ubuntu 12.10 does not work as well as on 12.04. After upgrade I installed driver sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install nvidia-current for my Nvidia 450 GTS graphics card. But sometimes I see slight lag on my videos played in VLC player, some of desktop and window effects are lagging, sometimes I can see an indescribable souce of pixels on my screen at the start of ubuntu and so on. I feel difference between 12.04 and 12.10 in favour of former version. • Can a Windows computer access Pulse sound server on an Ubuntu computer?

  With help I received in this question, I set up all my Ubuntu computers so that they all access a central computer for sound output, using Pulse Audio Preferences. I have some Windows computers as well. I was wondering if it is also possible to make them clients of the sound server computer, so that they will send their sound output over the network to be played by the Ubuntu computer running the Pulse audio sound server. And if so, how?

• IPS Package Groups

  IPS group packages consist solely of dependencies on other packages that make up a logical grouping of software. These are similar to, but not the equivalent of, Solaris 10 metaclusters. The main difference is that metaclusters are nested subsets ranging from a minimal install to nearly all packages on the media. Group packages have no such hierarchy. They can overlap other groups, or be completely disjoint sets. A group dependency is set this way in an IPS package manifest file: depend fmri=full/pkg/name type=group Current Solaris Groups Solaris currently has 4 system groups defined. These are used for different types of installation, and are included in the xml manifest files used by the various Solaris installers: Package Name Summary Description Default Installation For:  group/system/solaris-desktop Oracle Solaris Desktop Provides an Oracle Solaris desktop environment Live Media  group/system/solaris-large-server Oracle Solaris Large Server Provides an Oracle Solaris large server environment Text Installer  group/system/solaris-small-server Oracle Solaris Small Server Provides a useful command-line Oracle Solaris environment  Zones  group/system/solaris-auto-install  Oracle Solaris Automated Installer Client  Provides an Oracle Solaris Automated Installer client  Automated Installer There are also several "feature" groups such as AMP and GNU Developer Tools. • Dell Latitude E6420 in-built microphone not working

  I'm running with Ubuntu 12.04 64bit on Dell Latitude E6420. The inbuilt microphone is not working, and is not listed on the sound settings dialog. According to lspci, the device is: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04) I've also looked at alsamixer, and can see a "mic" and "dock mic" but fiddling with these and increasing to max amplification doesn't appear to change anything.   I'm trying to get vga_switcheroo to enable my integrated Intel HD 3000 instead of my ATI card. • Series On Embedded Development (Part 2) - Build-Time Optionality

  In this entry on embedded development, I'm going to discuss build-time optionality (BTO). BTO is the ability to subset your software at build-time so you only use what is needed. BTO typically pertains more to software providers rather then developers of final products. For example, software providers ship source products, frameworks or platforms which are used by developers to build other products. If you provide a source product, you probably don't have to do anything to support BTO as the developers using your source will only use the source they need to build their product. If you provide a framework, then there are some things you can do to support BTO. Say you provide a Java framework which supports audio and video. If you provide this framework in a single JAR, then developers who only want audio are forced to ship their product with the video portion of your framework even though they aren't using it. In this case, support providing the framework in separate JARs...break the framework into an audio JAR and a video JAR and let the users of your framework decide which JARs to include in their product. Sometimes this is as simple as packaging, but if, for example, the video functionality is dependent on the audio functionality, it may require coding work to cleanly separate the two. BTO can also work at install-time, and this is sometimes overlooked. Let's say your building a phone application which can use Near Field Communications (NFC) if it's available on the phone, but it doesn't require NFC to work. Typically you'd write one app for all phones (saving you time)...both those that have NFC and those that don't, and just use NFC if it's there. However, for better efficiency, you can detect at install-time if the phone supports NFC and not install the NFC portion of your app if the phone doesn't support NFC. This requires that you write the app so it can run without the optional NFC code and that you write your install app so it can detect NFC and do the right thing at install-time. Supporting install-time optionality will save persistent footprint on the phone, something your customers will appreciate, your app "neighbors" will appreciate, and that you'll appreciate when they save static footprint for you. • Using Pandora in Boxee

  Boxee is a very cool multimedia app that lets you access and stream your digital media in many different ways. There’s also a lot of extra apps included with it, and today we take a look at the Pandora application in Boxee. Pandora has been a favorite free music streaming service that’s been around for some time now. Though there are new services like Grooveshark and Spotify that are competing, Pandora is still a reliable choice. It’s now included in Boxee, and here we take a look at using it. Create a Pandora Account If you don’t already have a Pandora account, you can easily create one at their website (link below). Pandora in Boxee To start using Pandora from Boxee, launch Boxee and from the main menu select Apps. Now from the My Apps section select Pandora. When the Pandora app menu comes up, select Start. Now you need to log into your Pandora account. After signing in you can starting listening to your stations, viewing artist info, and cover art. All while enjoying some cool visuals in the background. From the controls at the top you can control playback, skip songs, control volume, get information on why a song was picked, and give a song a thumbs up or down. Of course you can also pull up your stations and switch between them and add more. The same features you’ve come to expect from Pandora are available. One thing we noticed missing is not being able to click on the band or artist to get additional information about them –which you can do on the Pandora site and desktop app. But that isn’t a deal breaker by any means, and we’re hoping the feature will be added in the future. Then while you’re checking out other apps, shows, and setting within Boxee, the cool visuals continue and the songs from you stations keep playing. Conclusion Pandora is a great streaming music service and a welcome edition to Boxee. If you’re a fan of Pandora now you can listen to it on your home theater system.     The Amazon AWS newsletter for May 2010 had a great link in it to this article by encoding.com on how you can use they service to encode your video for multi-format, multi-bandwidth streaming to many devices, including iPhone, iPad, and Flash with H264.   This looks like it doesn’t actually take advantage of CloudFront streaming, but merely splits your encoded files into the available chunks and includes all of the M3U8 files that point to the different bitrates and such.   This looks like a pretty sweet service in general, especially since they seem to have an API as well, so that may be very useful to those of you out there looking to host video. more later – joel

• Sending Big Files with WCF

  I had to look into a project that submits large files to WCF service. Implementation is based on data chunking. This is a good approach when your client and server are not both based on WCF, bud different technologies. The problem with something like this is that chunking (either you wish it or not) complicates the overall solution. Alternative would be streaming. In WCF to WCF scenario, this is a piece of cake. When client is Java, it becomes a bit more challenging (has anyone implemented Java client streaming data to WCF service?). What I really liked about .NET implementation with WCF, is that sending header info along with stream was dead simple, and from the developer point of view looked like it’s all a part of the DTO passed into the service. • U1 music mp3 files not put into albums

  Via the web page I can see that my files sync to U1 cloud servers. For the mp3 files, there seems to be a problem that several questions have already addressed but there does not seem to be a clear answer. If I use EasyTAG 2.1.6, I can see the ID3 tags on the local files and they seem to correctly define the artist, album title and track name. I expect it is not relevant, but I am using 10.04 with several different clients to rip the CDs. However, some mp3 files do not appear in the cloud at all and some others get assigned to Various Artist or Unknown artist. Does the music streaming (e.g. via Ipad) use the tags or the directory/file structure to assign the artist or album, and how quickly should it be expected to work? :-) Which version of ID3 tags does U1 music streaming work best with or prefer? thanks for any help David

• RAM Cache always full

  I have 6GB RAM, i5 2.4GHZ Processor running Ubuntu 11.10. When streaming online or opening several tabs in Chromium I soon have 4GB Memory in the cache. And this makes my Notebook slow. When streaming a video, after a few minutes it really slows down and stumbles/jerks. I partitioned my HD so that I have 8GB swap. What could the problem be? How can I solve this? P.s: initially I had 4gb and recently upgraded to 6GB, but I did not experience a significant change. P.P.S: if I enter "free -g" in the terminal this is the result: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 5 2 3 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 1 4 Swap: 8 0 8

• Lending epub files for limited time to users

  I am looking for components to build a digital library who lends people epub (ebooks) for about a week. It's like a digital version of the offline old public library. Now I have found several flash (pdf) file streaming solutions. But that would require an active internet link. And like the public library, you are able to take your books to the beach or pool on holiday abroad where you have no connection. So streaming is no option. The other file restriction method I have found was DRM, but that would require a really expensive license of Adobe Content Server 4 which is not suitable for my little hobby project. But it seems that adobe content server and Adobe Digital Editions is the only option at the moment. Or are there open source alternatives?

  Alright so I've had Linux Ubuntu 12.04 for over a year now and I still don't know anything about it. That only thing I can do with it is use the internet. I want to start streaming games that I play on my computer to Twitch.tv., but I don't know how. All of the downloads are only for windows. I found a website that tells you how to do it, but since I know nothing about linux, I can't do it. I haven't been able to get past the first step yet. Can someone please give me a step by step tutorial on how to do it. Please do not think you are being to specific, because I am sure it will help me. • PHP, when to use iterators, how to buffer results?

  When is it best to use Iterators in PHP, and how can they be implemented to best avoid loading all objects into memory simultaneously? Do any constructs exist in PHP so that we can queue up results of an operation for use with an Iterator, while again avoiding loading all objects into memory simultaneously? An example would be a curl HTTP request against a REST server In the case of an HTTP request that returns all results at once (a la curl), would we be better off to go with streaming results, and if so, are there any limitations or pitfalls to be aware of? If using streaming, is it better to replace curl with a PHP native stream/socket? My intention is to implement Iterators for a REST client, and separately a document ORM that I'm maintaining, but only if I can do so while gaining benefits from reduced memory usage, increased performance, etc. Thanks in advance for any responses :-)

• How do I create a big multiplayer world in UDK?

  I want to create a big multiplayer world in UDK and I'm having a few difficulties. I created the biggest terrain possible but then any terrain related action I do takes forever. However, I've seen videos of people make same size terrain and working without a problem. My pc is strong enough, so maybe someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. I want to make it even bigger then the biggest terrain size, so I was thinking of doing level streaming but then I read that streaming is working server side which means if I have a player on every terrain all terrains will still be loaded and I want to save as much memory possible so it will work well online. Thanks for any help you can give.

• Webcam Q&A page with guest "speakers" ideas?

  I want to host one way webcam Q&A's/AMA's and embed it on my sites webpage. I must be able to have specified hosts for these Q&A's connect quickly and easily to the webpage, and read user posted messages (questions) for interaction. I know there are some systems out there, like tinychat, but I'm unaware if there is anything exactly used for what I am looking for. Perhaps requiring a specific account/password before allowing streaming on the page, where I can email the host a password or directions to create an account to begin live streaming. Most of these people doing the question and answers on webcam will have little technical knowledge, so extra cookie points goes to ease of use! Thanks for ideas in advance! PS: I apologize if this is the incorrect section for posting this question, this is my first.
