  • Custom Memory Allocator for STL map

    - by Prasoon Tiwari
    This question is about construction of instances of custom allocator during insertion into a std::map. Here is a custom allocator for std::map<int,int> along with a small program that uses it: #include <stddef.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <map> #include <typeinfo> class MyPool { public: void * GetNext() { return malloc(24); } void Free(void *ptr) { free(ptr); } }; template<typename T> class MyPoolAlloc { public: static MyPool *pMyPool; typedef size_t size_type; typedef ptrdiff_t difference_type; typedef T* pointer; typedef const T* const_pointer; typedef T& reference; typedef const T& const_reference; typedef T value_type; template<typename X> struct rebind { typedef MyPoolAlloc<X> other; }; MyPoolAlloc() throw() { printf("-------Alloc--CONSTRUCTOR--------%08x %32s\n", this, typeid(T).name()); } MyPoolAlloc(const MyPoolAlloc&) throw() { printf(" Copy Constructor ---------------%08x %32s\n", this, typeid(T).name()); } template<typename X> MyPoolAlloc(const MyPoolAlloc<X>&) throw() { printf(" Construct T Alloc from X Alloc--%08x %32s %32s\n", this, typeid(T).name(), typeid(X).name()); } ~MyPoolAlloc() throw() { printf(" Destructor ---------------------%08x %32s\n", this, typeid(T).name()); }; pointer address(reference __x) const { return &__x; } const_pointer address(const_reference __x) const { return &__x; } pointer allocate(size_type __n, const void * hint = 0) { if (__n != 1) perror("MyPoolAlloc::allocate: __n is not 1.\n"); if (NULL == pMyPool) { pMyPool = new MyPool(); printf("======>Creating a new pool object.\n"); } return reinterpret_cast<T*>(pMyPool->GetNext()); } //__p is not permitted to be a null pointer void deallocate(pointer __p, size_type __n) { pMyPool->Free(reinterpret_cast<void *>(__p)); } size_type max_size() const throw() { return size_t(-1) / sizeof(T); } void construct(pointer __p, const T& __val) { printf("+++++++ %08x %s.\n", __p, typeid(T).name()); ::new(__p) T(__val); } void destroy(pointer __p) { printf("-+-+-+- %08x.\n", __p); __p->~T(); } }; template<typename T> inline bool operator==(const MyPoolAlloc<T>&, const MyPoolAlloc<T>&) { return true; } template<typename T> inline bool operator!=(const MyPoolAlloc<T>&, const MyPoolAlloc<T>&) { return false; } template<typename T> MyPool* MyPoolAlloc<T>::pMyPool = NULL; int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { std::map<int, int, std::less<int>, MyPoolAlloc<std::pair<const int,int> > > m; //random insertions in the map m.insert(std::pair<int,int>(1,2)); m[5] = 7; m[8] = 11; printf("======>End of map insertions.\n"); return 0; } Here is the output of this program: -------Alloc--CONSTRUCTOR--------bffcdaa6 St4pairIKiiE Construct T Alloc from X Alloc--bffcda77 St13_Rb_tree_nodeISt4pairIKiiEE St4pairIKiiE Copy Constructor ---------------bffcdad8 St13_Rb_tree_nodeISt4pairIKiiEE Destructor ---------------------bffcda77 St13_Rb_tree_nodeISt4pairIKiiEE Destructor ---------------------bffcdaa6 St4pairIKiiE ======Creating a new pool object. If you wish to run it on a 64-bit machine, you'll have to change at least the line return malloc(24). Changing to return malloc(48) should work.

  • Video overlay - need advice

    - by Marvin
    Hi, I'm working on a project and I need some advice. Just some background, Im not a programmer though at times I do some fiddling and I am generally comfortable with more specific terms. Now for the actual issue, I have a folder with 10 small videos (4/7 secs max each) and I would like to display them full screen looping and overlaid. I'm not too sure on at what should I be looking at, I thought maybe processing but my most serious issue if that I cant even ask for help since I don't know what I need. Thank you for your time.

  • Memory Profiling with DotTrace Questions

    - by cam
    I ran dotTrace on my application (which is having some issues). IntPtr System.Windows.Forms.UnsafeNativeMethods.CallWindowProc(IntPtr, IntPtr, Int32, IntPtr, IntPtr) Void System.Windows.Forms.UnsafeNativeMethods.WaitMessage() Are the two main functions that came up, taking about 94% of the application time. Since I didn't know what these two functions were, I ran through my code line by line. It runs smooth and efficiently until a point where it just hangs. "newFrm.Show()". The newFrm only contains a textbox. The larger the file I load into the text box (it's a notepad program), the longer it takes. Now normally this makes sense, but it takes about 30 seconds for a 167 kB file. Now I'm not sure what to do. It runs incredibly slow/stops functioning when you load a textfile and try to resize the window containing the text file too. Then I realized that it is only struggling to open text files with a long string of hex inside (ie) "XX-XX-XX-" etc. With other similarly sized files it struggles with resizing somewhat, but opens within a couple seconds. Does this have something to do with the textbox properties? I've set it to multiline and set maximum characters to 0 (so unlimited). How do I solve this issue? Is there some way I can see what is being called in those functions?

  • Web-Cam Video frames to System.Drawing.Bitmap

    - by Hooch
    Hello. I'm using AForge.NET framework to process some data from webcam. My Image processor is working. class WebProc { public void Process(System.Drawing.Bitmap image) { .... } } I know how to send image from HDD. I was thinking about something like that: private void backgroundWorker1_DoWork(object sender, DoWorkEventArgs e) { while(!backgroundWorker1.CancellationPending) { Bitmap Frame GetVidoFrameSomeWay(); WebProc.Process(Frame); } } Can you help me with those questions? How to get frame from webcam? How to list all available webcam for user to chose from? How to open Webcam setting window? Is there a way to set frame size to 640x480 o user size?

  • Which set(s) of video lectures for computer science?

    - by SebKom
    As most of you know a couple of top universities (MIT, Stanford, etc) around the world are now publishing videos of their lectures online. I am advancing to the third and final year of my computer science degree this September and I was thinking about spending some time during the summer to watch a couple of lectures, in order to improve my understanding of algorithms, complexity, programming, software engineering, etc. Now I don't have infinite time to spend so I can't watch all of the lectures from all of the universities so I was wondering if you could suggest me which sets to watch from each one (something like "Algorithms from MIT", "Programming from Yale", etc).

  • Creating a video chat application for drupal site

    - by Dswabster
    I am trying to write an application for website powered by drupal, basically i would like to create an application only authenticated users are able to use, and users are only allowed to connect with members of the opposite group they are a member of. I have been learning flash builder 4 and learning the basics of actionscript but I am still pretty new to Flash and Flex development. I would like to users to connect using the Adobe Stratus 2 protocol and if possible by authentication on existing site and using membership data from existing mysql database. If anyone could give me a nudge in the right direction on how I should go about creating this application or the next steps i should take, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • deallocated memory in tableview: message sent to deallocated instance

    - by Kirn
    I tried looking up other issues but couldn't find anything to match so here goes: I'm trying to display text in the table view so I use this bit of code: // StockData is an object I created and it pulls information from Yahoo APIs based on // a stock ticker stored in NSString *heading NSArray* tickerValues = [heading componentsSeparatedByString:@" "]; StockData *chosenStock = [[StockData alloc] initWithContents:[tickerValues objectAtIndex:0]]; [chosenStock getData]; // Set up the cell... NSDictionary *tempDict = [chosenStock values]; NSArray *tempArr = [tempDict allValues]; cell.textLabel.text = [tempArr objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; return cell; This is all under cellForRowAtIndexPath When I try to release the chosenStock object though I get this error: [CFDictionary release]: message sent to deallocated instance 0x434d3d0 Ive tried using NSZombieEnabled and Build and Analyze to detect problems but no luck thus far. Ive even gone so far as to comment bits and pieces of the code with NSLog but no luck. I'll post the code for StockData below this. As far as I can figure something is getting deallocated before I do the release but I'm not sure how. The only place I've got release in my code is under dealloc method call. Here's the StockData code: // StockData contains all stock information pulled in through Yahoo! to be displayed @implementation StockData @synthesize ticker, values; - (id) initWithContents: (NSString *)newName { if(self = [super init]){ ticker = newName; } return self; } - (void) getData { NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString: [NSString stringWithFormat:@"http://download.finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=%@&f=%@&e=.csv", ticker, @"chgvj1"]]; NSError *error; NSURLResponse *response; NSURLRequest *request = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:url]; NSData *stockData = [NSURLConnection sendSynchronousRequest:request returningResponse:&response error:&error]; if(stockData) { NSString *tempStr = [[NSString alloc] initWithData:stockData encoding:NSASCIIStringEncoding]; NSArray *receivedValuesArr = [tempStr componentsSeparatedByString:@","]; [tempStr release]; values = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObjects:receivedValuesArr forKeys:[@"change, high, low, volume, market" componentsSeparatedByString:@", "]]; } else { NSLog(@"Connection failed: %@", error); } } - (void)dealloc { [ticker release]; [values release]; [super dealloc]; NSLog(@"Release took place fine"); } @end

  • Implicit Memory Barriers

    - by foo
    let's say i have variables A, B and C that two threads (T1, T2) share. i have the following code: //T1 //~~ A = 1; B = 1; C = 1; InterlockedExchange(ref Foo, 1); //T2 (executes AFTER T1 calls InterlockedExchange) //~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ InterlockedExchange(ref Bar, 1); WriteLine(A); WriteLine(B); WriteLine(C); Question: does calling InterlockedExchange (implicit full fence) on T1 and T2, gurentess that T2 will "See" the write done by T1 before the fence? (A, B and C variables), even though those variables are not plance on the same cache-line as Foo and Bar?

  • Memory management technique for Objective-C iVars/properties

    - by David Rea
    Is the following code doing anything unnecessary? @interface MyClass { NSArray *myArray; } -(void)replaceArray:(NSArray *)newArray; @implementation MyClass -(void)replaceArray:(NSArray *)newArray { if( myArray ) { [myArray release]; myArray = nil; } myArray = [[NSArray alloc] initWithArray: newArray]; } @end What if I made the following changes: 1) Made myArray a property: @property (nonatomic, retain) NSArray myArray; 2) Changed the assignment to: self.myArray = [NSArray arrayWithArray: newArray]; Would that allow me to remove the conditional?

  • multiple C++ deletion of a memory pointed by multiple objects

    - by elgcom
    Another c++ pointer deletion question is in the following example: class Foo { public: int *p; ~Foo() { delete p; p = NULL; } }; Foo *f1 = new Foo(); Foo *f2 = new Foo(); f1->p = new int(1); f2->p = f1->p; delete f2; // ok delete f1; // no error? Why I did not get error when calling "delete f1"? didn't I delete the same address (*p) twice? If I directly delete the pointers in the last 2 lines of code, I will get error. delete f2->p; // ok delete f1->p; // error!! *** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (fasttop) ***

  • Is there a memory leak here?

    - by TheLearner
    Please see my comments in code: -(id)initWithCoordinate:(CLLocationCoordinate2D)c title:(NSString *)t { [super init]; coordinate = c; NSDate *today = [NSDate date]; NSDateFormatter *dateFormatter = [[NSDateFormatter alloc] init]; [dateFormatter setDateStyle:NSDateFormatterLongStyle]; NSString* formattedDate = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@ %@", [dateFormatter stringFromDate:today], t]; [self setTitle:formattedDate]; //Why does the app crash when I try and release formattedDate? I have after all passed its reference to the title property? [dateFormatter release]; //I need to release the dateformatter because I have finished using it and I have not passed on a reference to it return self; }

  • Loading remote video (MP4) with SWFObject

    - by Reddy S R
    On my webpage I have a swfobject, from Camtasia, that loads mp4 data through FlashVars like this: <object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" width="640" height="498" id="csSWF"> ... <param name="flashvars" value="autostart=false&content=funny.mp4&color=0x000000,0x000000" /> This works fine when the mp4 is on the same server(, and as a file). But when the file is residing on another server, the problem creeps in. Below is how I modify the flashvars. <param name="flashvars" value="autostart=false&content=http://myxyzsite.com/Private/Media/funny.mp4&color=0x000000,0x000000" /> This article explains how to load files from another server. When I point to this URL (http://myxyzsite.com/Private/Media/funny.mp4) in my browser directly, Open/Save dialog box is popped up. So the file exists. Should I set any HTTP headrs, say Content-Disposition to Attachment?

  • How are two-dimensional arrays formatted in memory?

    - by Chris Cooper
    In C, I know I can dynamically allocate a two-dimensional array on the heap using the following code: int** someNumbers = malloc(arrayRows*sizeof(int*)); for (i = 0; i < arrayRows; i++) { someNumbers[i] = malloc(arrayColumns*sizeof(int)); } Clearly, this actually creates a one-dimensional array of pointers to a bunch of separate one-dimensional arrays of integers, and "The System" can figure you what I mean when I ask for: someNumbers[4][2]; But when I statically declare a 2D array, as in the following line...: int someNumbers[ARRAY_ROWS][ARRAY_COLUMNS]; ...does a similar structure get created on the stack, or is it of another form completely? (i.e. is it a 1D array of pointers? If not, what is it, and how do references to it get figured out?) Also, when I said, "The System," what is actually responsible for figuring that out? The kernel? Or does the C compiler sort it out while compiling?

  • has anyone produced an in-memory GIT repository?

    - by Andrew Matthews
    I would like to be able to take advantage of the benefits of GIT (and its workflows), but without the cost of disk access - I just would like to leverage the distributed revision control capabilities of GIT to produce something like a hybrid of memcached and GIT. (preferably in .NET) Is there such a beast out there?

  • Custom UIButton Memory Management in dealloc

    - by ddawber
    I am hoping to clarify the processes going on here. I have created a subclass of UIButton whose init method looks like this: - (id)initWithTitle:(NSString *)title frame:(CGRect)btnFrame { self = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeCustom]; [self setTitle:title forState:UIControlStateNormal]; self.frame = btnFrame; return self; } In my view controller I am creating one of these buttons and adding it as a subview: myButton = [[CustomButton alloc] initWithTitle:@"Title" frame:someFrame]; [self.view addSubview:myButton]; In the view controller's dealloc method I log the retain count of my button: - (void)dealloc { NSLog(@"RC: %d", [myButton retainCount]); //RC = 2 [super dealloc]; NSLog(@"RC: %d", [myButton retainCount]); //RC = 1 } The way I understand it, myButton is not actually retained, even though I invoked it using alloc, because in my subclass I created an autorelease button (using buttonWithType:). In dealloc, does this mean that, when dealloc is called the superview releases the button and its retain count goes down to 1? The button has not yet been autoreleased? Or do I need to get that retain count down to zero after calling [super dealloc]? Cheers.

  • How to debug memory allocation issues?

    - by amitabh
    Hi I am writing an iPhone app that that is trying to create a second a view when the user clicks on an element in UITableView. The code looks like ReplyToViewController *reply = [[ReplyToViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"ReplyTo" bundle:nil]; reply.delegate = self; Message *message = [resultData objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; int dbid = [message.bizid intValue]; NSLog(@"dbid=%d",dbid); reply.currentMessage = message; reply.modalTransitionStyle = UIModalTransitionStyleFlipHorizontal; [self presentModalViewController:reply animated:YES]; The reply object gets created properly and the view is proper. Last line in above code segment calls some framework code which eventually calls the viewDidLoad method of the ReplyToViewController. Address of the reply object in the above code and the address of the object in viewDidLoad is not same. Any idea where this new object is coming from? How do I debug? I also added init method the following method in ReplyToViewController hoping that it will get called and I can find who is creating this new object. But it does not stop in this method. Any help will be greatly appreciated. - (id) init { /* first initialize the base class */ self = [super init]; return self; } // Following gets called from the 1st code segment. - (id)initWithNibName:(NSString *)nibNameOrNil bundle:(NSBundle *)nibBundleOrNil { if (self = [super initWithNibName:nibNameOrNil bundle:nibBundleOrNil]) { // Custom initialization } return self; } - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; NSLog(currentMessage.text]; // THIS returns nil and the program fails later in the code. }

  • What things must I know about OpenAL memory management?

    - by mystify
    I am playing sound with OpenAL, and it seems to increase memory footprint dramatically for every little sound I play. It seems that OpenAL never frees memory itself and that playing a Source causes memory footprint to grow. I couldn't find any good resources about OpenAL memory management, but I bet I must do a lot of stuff myself. Maybe someone knows a ressource for that?
