• Problem with Macbook air automatically not acquiring free wifi network dns or router address

  I have this problem when my macbook air sometimes does not connect to free wifi hotspots. When the problem happens and I try to run the diagnostics, it normally gets to yellow network settings tab. It seems that it for some reason does not acquire automatically the router or dns address. Sometimes after I shut it down and restart it magically connects to the wifi hotspot but it is very inconsistent. Anyone knows a fix for this problem?

• Cisco RV016 dual WAN and VPN setup

  I have a VPN of several RV016 routers and I want to set some of them with 2 ISPs. I plug the two ISP cables in WAN 1 and 2 ports and configure the router to "Intelligent Balancer(Auto Mode)". It works ok like that, but the VPNs that I set use the public IP of the provider. For example if I have 5 VPNs set for ISP1 (WAN1) and the balancer sends the request trough WAN2 it can't use any of the configured VPNs because the public IP is different. How do I deal with this problem?

  I'd like to extend my WiFi coverage, so I've bought the TP-Link TL-WR1043ND and updated its firmware to the latest (wr1043nv1_en_3_13_4_up(110429)) but I can't find how to use its WDS function. Reading further on Super User I understand that both the modem-router (Pirelli Alice Gate) and the TL-WR1043ND should support WDS. Are there any tricks to achieve the same result - extending my WiFi range - even changing the firmware to DD-WRT or Tomato etc?

  I'm not very knowledgeable about wifi, but I understand the notion of Adhoc networks (Wifi without a router), so... Is there a standard (or widely implemented) way of letting a device "momentarily" negotiate a wifi connection (Adhoc network or otherwise) directly to another device, transfer some data, and then quit, all without any user intervention on either device? For example, let's say I have a PC and an ereader in the same room and there's no nearby wifi router for either of these devices to connect to. I want to send a file from PC to ereader but I don't want to do the work of setting up network, selecting an SSID, or entering passwords. Is that possible?

• How do I connect a laptop running Windows 7 to an Android phone using WiFi Direct?

  From where I am sitting, Windows 7 does not appear to support WiFi Direct connections to Android mobile devices. Specifically, turning on WiFi Direct on my Samsung Galaxy S II does not make the device visible as a potential WiFi network connection. Windows 8 is said to support WiFi Direct, but I have no desire to upgrade at this time. I have successfully set up ad hoc WiFi connections between the S II and my laptop before, but as you may be aware, these are not the same as WiFi Direct. Before posting this question, I searched [ "Windows 7" "WiFi Direct" ] and variations thereof, and dutifully slogged through dozens of lame or irrelevant responses on various forums, badly made YouTube videos, and probable Trojan horse distribution sites. If someone out there knows how to do this, it's buried in the noise.

  I'm having frequent wifi disconnects on my Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch laptop. I got this laptop 2 months back and it has been happening ever since about 3-5 times a day and 10 times a week on average. I've Frontier Fios internet. Power connected or not does not matter. Once I get disconnected, I try below to connect again in that order: turn Airplane mode on and off, troubleshoot network problems windows troubleshooter), restart the laptop I'd find that the WiFi adapter would get disabled and sometimes windows troubleshooting would help but more than often I'd end up restarting the laptop. A week back, I upgraded my wifi network adapter drivers (now Intel, version 15.5.6.48, 10/3/2012). I still get disconnected frequently but turning Airplane mode on and off gets me connected again. So the driver update did help. Windows 8 is updated. None of the other devices (nexus, iphone phones, nexus7, ipad tablets) would have wifi issues when my laptop would get disconnected. config: Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6205 (WiFi network adapter) Microsoft Windows 8 Pro Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200] x64-based PC LENOVO System Model: 3443CTO X1 Carbon Touch I recently noticed this log message When I got disconnected in event viewer: Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0x[XXXXXXXXXXXX].   I own a small private security services business. Some of my clients require 2-10 security officers per location. I'm trying to think outside the box in order to solve my communications problem. I'd rather not buy or lease hf radios or voip systems at the current rates.   Looking for the initial release of the LinkSys WRT54G, not V1.1 or V2.0 or anything like that. If it comes with DD-WRT pre-installed, even better. That being said, I suppose a side question would be whether SU recommends different hardware. After all, DD-WRT may have been originally built for the WRT54G and the WRT54Gv1.0 may have better hardware than any of the successive models, but it's still fairly dated. Are there newer routers that are more stable or performant with DD-WRT?

So the last one I want to use to attach a USB storage, and I've read some reviews stating the throughput of the USB could be up to 18 mb/s. So in regard of USB storage, should I care about hard disk cache? Simple powered-over-usb seems to have 8 mb cache, other (externally powered) has 16 for instance.

• How can I monitor network traffic?

  I have a home network with about 10 devices including BluRay player [netflix] and both windows and linux machines. I need to collect network traffic statistics so that if questions come up about how much traffic I'm using I have the answer independent of my ISP. I've looked at DD-WRT, but I see that even buying a new router that will be supported is a problem since I might get the wrong version of the hardware. I have a DIR-655 and a DIR-501 - neither of which is supported. I don't mind buying new hardware, but it looks like a crap-shoot to get one that will work. DD-WRT looks like a bad solution unless someone knows of a place to get a router that is guaranteed to work. Does someone know of an arduino or other SBC solution? I have plenty of NAT routers already, so I just need traffic statistics for external traffic. The network is GBit Ethernet inside and Cable / soon to be DSL outside. The DIR-655 only gives me "packets", not bytes transferred oddly enough. Thanks, ww

  Due to some home network complications I have had to move my router to a seperate part of the house, therefore the wired network I had set up can no longer work. Before I find the time to go out and buy a Wifi adapter for my desktop PC, I have a laptop that uses a built in Wifi card to connect to my router and this can connect to the internet, and I was wondering if I could somehow access the internet on my desktop PC via my laptop. I'm hoping for a not-so-complex solution as this will only be set up for a few days, but it is quite vital that my desktop computer gets internet access. • Extremely poor WiFi reception on new desktop

  I just received a new desktop with a built-in WiFi card (Windows 7 Home Premium x64). However, I am only able to receive any WiFi signal when the computer is within 1-2 meters of a router. Even then, the signal is very weak (Windows 7 says it is "poor"). I have tried this with 2 different routers and see similar results. I have somewhere around a dozen other devices that can connect to both routers with greater signal strength (usually full strength) from much, much further away. When I tried calling support I was instructed to reinstall my drivers and attempt to change the WiFi channel of the router. Neither worked. I was then told that the problem was with my routers and that the computer was functioning normally and that it was certainly not a hardware problem. What would be the cause of this and is there anything I can do to fix it?

I realize that this does not gain any security - or may even make the system more secure, but I am not asking about security here.   I have a D-Link router for my home Wi-Fi network. Everyday at least once the internet suddenly goes down. I am simply not able to connect to the Wi-Fi network. If I just restart the router, it starts working. To debug the issue I logged into the admin panel and noticed the time was set to something in 2002. I have set it to the correct time. Will wait to see if that fixes the problem. In the meanwhile I want to know what can go bad when the router has been set to show an incorrect time? What are the kinds of problems expected? My Wi-Fi was working just fine most of the time, but sometimes it lost the connection. Could this be linked to the incorrect time setting?

• Switched to new router and now experiencing lag?

  I switched from a dynex-802.11b/g to a Netgear-802.11b/g/n just yesterday. My router is down stairs because my phoneline upstairs is retarded....but my PS3 is still upstairs (SOCOM: Confrontation is game I am experiencing issues). I have done everything I can to make sure the connection is solid and have checked the status and it has been as high as 80% and usually lingers at about 60%. I thought about upgrading my bandwidth from 1.5mbs to 7mbs, but I am guessing something is wrong if it worked fine before? Now the game seems more laggy and my voice chat is choppy. Others seem to receive my voice data fine because I can hear my own feedback clearly from other players (if you are in close proximity to another player and speak and there volume is loud enough sometimes you can hear yourself). I wonder if I port forward or setup DMZ then it will be fixed, but I am not sure and don't know quite how to do it. Has anyone else ever experienced this when switching routers? What did you do to fix it? Thanks!

• iPhone 3G can't see any WiFi networks, ever

  I've got WiFi turned on in the settings, and ask before connect turned off. My iPhone 3G should see several WiFi networks, but it lists none. It also does not list my own network, which my computers see just fine. It has worked earlier but stopped working recently (possibly because of or at the same time of other trouble (which a restore solved)). The iPhone is not jailbroken. The SSID is not hidden, uses WPA2. It also finds no WiFi networks when I'm at a friend's house. His iPhone 2G sees several WiFi networks, including his own. When I use the manual entry method, specifying my home SSID and the proper WPA2 passkey, then click join, the iPhone says couldn't find that network. Same at my friend's place, with his SSID and passkey. I've just backed up my iPhone, then restored it, to see if refreshing the firmware would help. It didn't change anything. Is my iPhone broken? How can I fix this?
