• Cache updates when migrating DNS from one provider to another

  This may be a Windows DNS specific question or a general DNS best practice question - I'm not sure! We migrated our 3rd party DNS provision from provider A to provider B. I noticed that our internal recursive windows DNS servers still had NS records cached for our domains pointing to provider A's servers, even though I changed the nameservers with our registrar several days ago, and even though selecting the properties of the cached records showed a TTL of 1 day. After 24 hours when the NS records in this cache have expired, will the DNS server go back to the TLD server for an update on the authority, or will it go by preference to dns1.providera.com since that is what it has cached? In this case I arranged to leave Provider A's servers up for a week to allow changes to propagate, so dns1.providera.com is still active and would still provide NS and SOA records that said that dns1.providera.com. was in charge of this domain. Given this fact, would the Windows DNS server ever go back to the TLD and pick up the authority changes, or would it just assume all was well and renew timestamps on its cached NS records? I wonder what would be the best approach to ensuring that caches pick this up. Should I:- (1) Leave Provider A's servers in place and active and wait for caches to catch up ... basically what we're doing now which seems to have issues - perhaps specifically for Windows servers, or perhaps more widely. (2) Leave Provider A's servers in place but change the NS and/or SOA information they provide to tell caches that new servers are in charge. (3) Remove Provider A's servers after 2*TTL to force remaining caches to update. The issue with (2) is that on Provider A's system I can't seem to change the NS or SOA information to anything other than their servers. The issue with (3) is that I'm not sure how a DNS server would behave in this case. When it couldn't reach the cached name servers, would it flush its cache and try a full recursive lookup, or would it just return an error, forcing the user to clear the cache manually? My problem is that both models have a property called "Email" and the model binding is not able to make a distinction between the too. I read that [Bind(Prefix = ... is used to resolved this issue, but I have not been able to see a concise example on how to achieve this. • Looking for an application that scrolls or pans netbook screens running Windows

  I'm looking for a Windows 7 and XP compatible Windows desktop panning/scrolling tool. This is to solve a problem where some applications for example MSN have settings/preference Windows that are not resizeable. I have a Netbook with a small maximum screen resolution e.g. 1024x600. The fixed non-resizeable windows are too large for this display screen size so I cannot see all of the items on these windows, particularly the OK button to save settings. What I would like is a desktop scrolling/panning tool where if I move my mouse pointer to any edge of the display, it pans to show the region of the too-large-fixed window that I could not see. I use a Samsung N110 and Toshiba NB100 netbooks. I'm looking for: A general program that provides desktop panning/scrolling/expanded resolution to allow all regions of a non-resizeable fixed window Preferably a non-graphics hardware specific program but will accept a solution that works with both the above machines I'm NOT looking for (i.e. unsatisfactory answers others have asked that I've already searched and found): Advice on what programs to use that DON'T have the problem of fixed windows Alternative operating system solutions Plugging in an external monitor with larger resolution - I use this option but I need a solution when one is not available, e.g. while travelling etc Advice about not using small screen netbooks - I enjoy the compact convenience of them Advice about change the dpi settings in the Control Panel Display settings Advice about guesswork with the tab key to move the focus the off-screen item I cannot see Thank you in advance.

There were some references to utilities like the More Internet preference pane which no longer seems to be available from the author's site. I did find it online by Googling but it seems a bit shaky - like it was written for an older OSX - perhaps Tiger. I haven't been able to find information on how to set the URL handler for protocols and custom protocols. I'm assuming there is a plist file somewhere that I can edit - or maybe there is a newer, better utility that works well with Mountain Lion?

  I'm writing an app using sms as communication. I have chosen to subscribe to an sms-gateway, which provides me with an API for doing so. The API has functions for sending as well as pulling new messages. It does however not have any kind of push functionality. In order to do my queries most efficient, I'm seeking data on how long time people wait before they answer a text message - as a probability function. Extra info: The application is interactive (as can be), so I suppose the times will be pretty similar to real life human-human communication. I don't believe differences in personal style will play a big impact on the right times and frequencies to query, so average data should be fine.

• Small Business HP Virtualisation and iSCSI SAN Options

  We are a small business that hosts our core product on a number of HP servers. Our core production setup is 1x HP DL380, high powered for a SQL Server Database 1x HP DL360, mid powered for our core application server 6x HP DL320, low powered for our front ends We run our training / testing / support systems on a similar setup, the servers are just older and less powerful. Unfortunately this is now causing us issues as the system has grown beyond the capabilities of these older servers. Upgrading these servers would be expensive and we believe that virtualisation is probably the way to go for the future. Locally we run a number of test / dev environments on ESXi using Direct Storoage on a couple of high powered DL360's and these are performing fairly well. We're thinking that instead of replacing all of our test servers that we can implement an iSCSI SAN and one or two high powered hosts. Hopefully looking that when it comes to replace our live servers as well that we can just expand the virual environment to cope. So my question is... Can anyone offer any advice on some suitable options? We have generally always been extremely happy with HP servers, all of our kit is currently HP, therefore our preference would be to stick with HP, however, I'm always happy to hear about other options. I'm hoping that initially a budget of around 15-25k (GBP) would be suitable, this could potentially be increased if I had confidence that the system would pave the way for a cost effective upgrade of our live systems in the future as well. I am new to SAN's and my only real experience is playing with OpenFiler on some old desktops. I think iSCSI should be suitable, but I've not done any research into how SQL server may perform. I've had a browser through HP's sites and see plenty of information about EVA, MSA, LeftHand, etc. However, from looking at all that, I don't see which options would be best and more importantly I don't know exactly what I would need to buy. Any help, links, opinions would be much appreciated. Thanks

  For the better part of 10 years + we have relied on various network mapped drives to allow file sharing. One drive letter for sharing files between teams, a seperate file share for the entire organization, a third for personal use etc. I would like to move away from this and am trying to decide if an ECM/Sharepoint type solution, or home grown app, is worth the cost and the way to go? Or if we should simply remain relying on login scripts/mapped drives for file sharing due to its relative simplicity? Is there a way to access this directly in the cache or do I have to destroy and rebuild the whole object just to change the value of objMemberDetails.CreditNum?   I am looking at various FOSS options to build a robust EMail solution for a government funded university. Commercial options are to be chosen only in the worst case scenario. Here are the requirements: Approx 1000-1500 users - Postfix or Exim? (Sendmail is out;-)) Mailing lists for different groups/Need web based archive - Mailman? Sympa? Centralised identity store - OpenLDAP? Fedora 389DS? Secure IMAP only - no POP3 required - Courier? Dovecot? Cyrus?? Anti Spam - SpamAssasin? what else? Calendaring - ?? webmail - good to have, not mandatory - needs to be very secure...so squirrelmail is out;-)? Other questions: What mailbox storage format to use? where to store? database/file system? Simple and effective HA options? Is there a web proxy equivalent to squid in the mail server world? software load balancers?CARP? Monitoring and alert? Backup? The govt wants to stimulate the local economy by buying hardware locally from whitebox vendors. Also local consultants and university students will do the integration. We looked at out-of-the-box integrated solutions like Axigen, Zimbra and GMail but each was ruled out in favour of a DIY approach in the hopes of full control over the data and avoiding vendor lockin - which i though was a smart thing to do. I wish more provincial governments in the developing world think of these sort of initiatives As for OS - Debian, FreeBSD would be first preference. Commercial OS's need not apply. • Vanishing Windows Desktop Shortcut Keys

  The Situation Like you, I have many applications that I like to open. I've set up keyboard shortcuts for the most common, by placing a link on the desktop and setting its Shortcut Key property: This is all fine and dandy, most of the time. When I want to bring up the GIMP, I press Ctrl+Alt+G and the GIMP launches. Lovely. The Problem Sometimes--perhaps once a month per desktop shortcut--the shortcut key assignment simply vanishes. I press Ctrl+Alt+G and nothing happens, so I go check the shortcut and see that lo and behold: nothing is there. This happens regularly to all my shortcuts (not all at once). It doesn't matter what keys I assign, and there doesn't seem to be any correlation with particular applications being open or anything of that sort. This has happened on every Windows XP machine I've ever used with any regularity. Obviously what makes this issue particularly obnoxious is that it's not easily reproducible. I have searched long and hard for a solution for (or at least acknowledgement of) this problem, to no avail, so hopefully you guys know something that I don't. I did find this question, where the answers are all basically "use a third-party app", but as far as I could tell that was a slightly different issue, related to Explorer being busy. Note: I've tagged this with Windows in general because I seem to remember it happening on Windows 7 as well as XP, but I rarely notice it because I use the start-menu search in preference to desktop shortcuts.

• How can I make the XAnalogTV xscreensaver fill my screen?

  I recently installed xscreensaver, as well as the additional/extra screensavers. Many of the OpenGL ones function correctly, going fullscreen as expected. However, for some reason, the XAnalogTV screensaver leaves two "blank" spots on the edges of my screen. If I manually launch XAnalogTV, it displays a window, which it fills correctly. When I maximize the window, the same effect occurs: the window maximizes, but the two edges of the screen are literally "transparent". This effect also occurs when the screensaver is set to fullscreen. For these reasons, I believe the problem may be related to the aspect ratio of the screen. The edges of the screen are literally "ignored", with nothing being drawn there. Specifically, note the transition between the maximized and full-screen screenshots (with the un-drawn whitespace shrinking as the vertical height has been increased). For reference, I am running Xubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Vostro 1520 (Intel P8600, Nvidia 9300M) with a 1440 x 900 display (16:10). I have also set the GetViewPortIsFullOfLies preference to true. Is there any way to force XAnalogTV to fill my entire screen? Alternatively, as I believe the problem is aspect-ratio related, is there any way I can get the screensaver to render larger than my display, and simply discard the extra pixels? Relevant screenshots (windowed, maximized, and full-screen, respectively): You can see in the last two that the scrollbar from Firefox is clearly visible, even though this is a full-screen screensaver.

• VB.Net variable declaration

  I notice that both of these compile without any compiler warnings or errors, even with Option Strict and Option Explicit both turned on: Dim x As Exception = New Exception("this is a test") Dim y = New Exception("this is another test") My question is, is it more proper to use the first way (see variable x) or the second way (see variable y)? My guess is that VB doesn't need the As clause since the variable is being initialized in place, so the compiler can infer the type. I tend to like the first way as it just "feels" right and is more consistent with other languages like C#, just wondered if there was some good reason for one way over the other. I guess it's really personal choice.

• Increse gap (pause) between songs

  Hello, I googled a lot before asking. This is really a problem. I know that there's an option in preference to switch off cross fading, but this is not what I want to do. Cross fading doesn't add any gap at all. If there's no gap between two songs, so you won't hear any. I need a real GAP between song, I mean a REAL pause about 2 seconds. Why? My MD player can't handle songs if there are no gaps in line input. Even with 1 second gap MD records 2 songs as 1. Is there any software that can increase the gap in the playlist? I know that Winamp has a plugin for putting pauses between songs. Is there anything for iTunes or Mac OS X? Another work around is to add a 2 sec MP3 between each song in the playlist but this is really killing me to do. I'm more on lossless stuff, so .CUE files would be an option too (using XLD for converting)

• Replicated MongoDB server slower than simple shards

  I tried to compare the performance of a sharded configuration against a sharded and replicated configuration. The sharded configuration consists of 8 shards each running on three different machines thereby constituting a total of 24 shards. All 8 of these shards run in the same partition on each machine. The sharded and replicated version is 8 shards again just like plain sharding, and all 8 mongods run on the same partition in each machine. But apart from this, each of these three machine now run additional 16 threads on another partition which serve as the secondary for the 8 mongods running on other machines. This is the way I prepared a sharded and replicated configuration with data chunks having replication factor of 3. Important point to note is that once the data has been loaded, it is not modified. So after primary and secondaries have synchronized then it doesn't matter which one i read from. To run the queries, I use an entirely different machine (let's call it config) which runs mongos and this machine's only purpose is to receive queries and run them on the cluster. Contrary to my expectations, plain sharding of 8 threads on each machine (total = 3 * 8 = 24) is performing better for queries than the sharded + replicated configuration. I have a script written to perform the query. So in order to time the scripts, I use time ./testScript and see the result. I tried changing the reading preference for replicated cluster by logging to mongo of config and run db.getMongo().setReadPref('secondary') and then exit the shell and run the queries like time ./testScript. The questions are: Where am i going wrong in the replication? Why is it slower than its plain sharding version? Does the db.getMongo().ReadPref('secondary') persist when i leave the shell and try to perform the query? All the four machines are running Linux and i have already increased the ulimit -n to 2048 from initial value of 1024 to allow more connections. The collections are properly distributed and all the mongods have equal number of chunks. Goes without saying that indices in both configurations are the same.

• AVR Analog Comparator + Internal Pullup?

  I have what I hope is a simple question pertaining to the Atmel AVR microcontrollers. So I want to use the ATTiny85's Analog Comparator to determine if a signal is above or below a threshold. This signal is normally "floating" and grounded when "active" (i.e. it's an active low - open collector signal). If I enable the pullup on the input pin (which is also the comparator input) by doing: DDRB = 0x00; // DDRB.1 = 0 = input PORTB = 0xFF; // PORTB.1 = 1 = internal pullup enabled If i use the analog comparator and select PORTB.1 as AIN1 will the internal pullup be applied to my input signal? I'm hoping someone has personal experience to verify this behavior. Hope this question isn't too 'hardware-oriented' for stack-overflow. Thanks!

  Hey guys, As a personal project, I'm looking to build a rudimentary DBMS. I've read the relevant sections in Elmasri & Navathe (5ed), but could use a more focused text. The rub is that I want to play with novel non-relational data models. While a lot of E&N was great- indexing implementation details in particular- the more advanced DBMS implementation was only targeted to a relational model. I could also use something a bit more practical and detail-oriented, with real-world recommendations. I'd like to defer staring at DBMS source for a while if I can. Any ideas?

• Utility to LOGICALLY compare two xml files?

  Right now we are attempting to build golden configurations for our environment. One piece of software that we use relies on large XML files to contain the bulk of its configuration. We want tot ake our lab environment, catalog it as our "golden configuration" and then be able to audit against that configuration in the future. Since diff is bytewise comparison and NOT logical comparison, we can't use it to compare files in this case (XML is unordered, so it won't work). What I am looking for is something that can parse the two XML files, and compare them element by element. So far we have yet to find any utilities that can do this. OS doesn't matter, I can do it on anything where it will work. The preference is something off the shelf. Any ideas? Edit: One issue we have run into is one vendor's config files will occasionally mention the same element several times, each time with different attributes. Whatever diff utility we use would need to be able to identify either the set of attributes or identify them all as part of one element. Tall order :)

• Use only some parts of Django?

  I like Django, but for a particular application I would like to use only parts of it, but I'm not familiar enough with how Django works on the inside, so maybe someone can point me into the right direction as to what I have to check out. Specifically, I want to use: The models and database abstraction The caching API, although I want to avoid database lookups by caching, not HTML generation, and since the caching framework in Django is intended for the latter, I'm not sure yet whether that's really appropriate. I would not use: Templating urlconfigs Or, more exactly, I'm neither using HTTP nor HTML. So basically, I have a different input / output chain than usual. Can this work? My personal killer feature in Django is the Object / database mapping that I can do with the models, so if there's another technology (doesn't have to be Python, I'm in the design phase and I'm pretty agnostic about languages and platforms) that gives me the same abilities, that would be great, too.

• What do you do to keep current

  I've noticed that as I progress in my career I my day to day activities require less and less actual hands on development. However, I feel that I need to stay current, both for my own personal desire as well as being able to guide a team to best practices etc. I'm finding it very hard to stay on top of the game because there are so many new frameworks, technologies and patterns coming out. Do I concentrate on a particular aspect or framework? Do I become a generalist or a specialist? What are others doing to maintain a certain level of proficiency and currentness (sic)?
