• Looking for help with a design for a simple C# calendar app.

  As a personal project, I'm putting together a C# WPF calendar. I'm stuck on coding the calendar screen - specifically, the 5x7 grid of days. I've first tried to code it using elements like Panels, Labels, and Buttons. I've decided that was too cumbersome. I've then decided to use GDI to draw the calendar myself. I now have a wonderful layout - but I'm not sure how to handle interactive regions of the calendar. (Say, Previous/Next month, clicking on any particular day...) After rendering the calendar screen, should I be creating button objects for all those tasks, and assigning onClick handlers to them? Or is there an alternative solution?   I'm creating a Ruby on Rails application, and I'm trying to create/login/logout users. Other things such as questions_asked, reputation, etc. are set by the application, so should be initialized when we create new users. Right now, I'm just setting each of those manually in the create method for UsersController: def create @user = User.new(params[:user]) @user.reputation = 0 @user.questions_asked = 0 @user.answers_given = 0 @user.request = nil ... end Is there a more elegant/efficient way of doing this?

• Image rendering on browser or temporary images?

  I'm trying to make a statistics page where it will show several data and charts. The charts need to be pictures so that the user can save it/drag-and-drop to his/her personal reports. I'm using Gruff Graphs for Ruby to produce the charts but I don't know the best way to display the results safe and protected. Some of my ideas/tries are: save the chart to a file (jpg, png)? problem: data is available to anyone (don't have access to cron, to delete data from time to time) render in the browser (has to work on IE)? Use javascript (Raphaël—JavaScript Library) or Google API and output a PDF report (need plugin or gem, right)? use send_data? i've tried to output other way than inline, because I needs to show other data, is it possible? • How to Eliminate Black Bars from Powerpoint videos ?

  Hi, I am running a digital signage system for my client. The basic installation is a vertically oriented 42" LCD TV with a 1920x1080 screen resolution (reverse of 1920x1080 when setup normally, i.e. landscaped). Please check out the following link for a basic screen divisions layout I want to setup. http://flickr.com/photos/55097319@N03/5410208856 In the division labeled "ppt" I plan to run a powerpoint presentation. The screen division is 360x1476 resolution. As there isn't an option in powerpoint to specify slide size in terms of resolution so according to this article on indezine http://indezine.com/products/powerpoint/books/perfectmedicalpres02.html to get a screen resolution of my preference I divided 360 and 1476 each by 72 which gives me 5"x 20.5" as the slide size for my ppt. After setting up slide size as per above dimensions, I used sizer (http://brianapps.net) to resize my ppt window to 360x1476 so that when I record I do not get any black bars. But after launching recording there are side black bars visible which camtasia records and brings-inside cam studio with black bars. http://www.flickr.com/photos/55097319@N03/5409597049 My question is that after doing the above and as explained in the following video link why do I still get black bars. http://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/eliminate_black_bars_in_your_powerpoint_recordings Is there an option in camtasia to stretch the recording to cover up black bars or any other alternative way I can get rid of those black bars while I get a ppt recorded as per my preferred dimensions. Notes: In the techsmith video above it asks to adjust my desktop screen resolution which my display chipset does not allow me to set. I set up show in powerpoint to be "browsed by an individual(window)". Also signage software only supports swf's and video file formats natively and not ppt, pptx etc. Thanks bhavani.

• How much should I charge for Rails programming?

  I have been asked to quote an hourly rate for freelance programming for a Rails project. Although it would be my first paid project on Rails, I know the technology well from personal projects and have a decade of professional programming experience. This would be my first freelance project ever, so I have no idea how to find out what the going rate for my services should be. Obviously, if I quote a rate that is too high, they may choose someone else - too low and I may feel cheated later on. Any suggestions? Update: I am in NYC and the project is scheduled for 6 months to a year (but this seems unrealistic - I think it will be a multi-year project). I would develop on site (at a corporate location) with one other developer and the project would consist of about 200 custom-built pages initially. 10 hour days with weekends and additional overtime as required. The customer has given no information about how much they will pay - "a competitive rate" - they want me to start the discussion.

  Hey Everyone, As a student in computer engineering I have been pressured to type up very detailed comments for everything I do. I can see this being very useful for group projects or in the work place but when you work on your own projects do you spend as much time commenting? As a personal project I am working on grows more and more complicated I sometimes feel as though I should be commenting more but I also feel as though it's a waste of time since I will probably be the only one working on it. Is it worth the time and cluttered code? Thoughts?

  Driving me mad on a personal project; I know I've done this before but elsewhere and don't have the code. As far as I can see, I'm setting the parameter, I'm setting its value, the connection is open, yet when I try to fill the dataset I get the error 'Procedure or function expects parameter "@test" which was not supplied'. (This is obviously a simplified test! Same error on this or the real, rather longer code though.) • Determine Click-thru Percentage With PHP

  Hi all, I am currently working on a small sponsorship application(PHP/MySql) for my personal blog, and am almost finish, but I am stuck on how to calculate the click-thru rate of my sponsors campaigns. I was always terrible with working out percentages, so any practical help would be appreciated. The data is stored in the DB as simple numbers.. So as expected, when a page refreshes, or a sponsors ad is clicked, the data updates with an incrementation of 1. So using these values...say $clicks and $impressions, how would I determine the click-thru rate? What would be the sum I would use to calculate? An example function would really be appreciated. • Testing ASP.NET security in Firefox

  I'm not sure whether this question belongs on StackOverflow or SuperUser, but here goes nothing... I'm trying to test out some basic security problems on my personal ASP.NET website to see exactly how the custom validators, etc. work when tampering with the data. I've been looking at the Firefox extension TamperData which seems to do the trick, but it doesn't feel very professional at all. The issues I'm having with TamperData is that the textbox for the POST data is way too small to hold the ASP.NET view-state, so I have to copy that data into Emacs and then back again to be productive at all. I also don't like that there doesn't seem to be an option to only tamper with data which is from/to localhost. Any ideas on better extensions for the task or better methods to test it?

• Getting started with writing a desktop app that talks to an iPhone

  I'm thinking of writing an app to selectively transfer photos/music to and from my iPhone, mostly for fun and personal convenience. However, I'm stuck at the very beginning -- where do I look to find information on how to do this? Pretty much every link I see talks about developing applications that run on the iPhone, but nothing about desktop app for interfacing with an iPhone. I'm on Windows (no access to a Mac, but I'll take suggestions for that for when I eventually acquire one), and I'm most familiar with C#, but other languages are definitely an option. Can anybody offer me a few pointers on getting started? Thanks.

• Ram question in VMware Server 2

  Hi, I understand from the VMware Server 2 documentation that VMware Server 2 is capable of running a 64-bit guest OS underneath a 32-bit host OS, as long as the hardware running the box is 64-bit capable. Here's my situation. We currently have an underutilized XEON X3220 Quad Core 64bit Server, running Server 2003, 32-bit and 2gb of RAM (the motherboard is capable of 8gb ram). The server is currently used mainly for file and print services. It is also running Active Directory, Novell eDirectory and Groupwise 6.5. We are planning a micration to Microsoft Exchange, so the Novell eDirectory and Groupwise services will eventually be purged from this box, leaving only Active Directory, File and Print services. Being that this server is underutilized we are hoping to save hardware costs and virtualize our new Exchange investment. My question is this. Will VMware allow access to the "invisible" extra memory that Windows 32-bit won't see. Meaning, if we increase the full amount of system ram to 8gb (yes, I know the 32-bit host OS will only see a maximum of 4gb), will I be able to assign maybe 5gb to the new Server 2008 64-bit OS running Exchange and leave 3gb for the Guest OS (or maybe even a 6, 2 split). The second part of that would be, would it be better to just convert the main OS currently running to an image, convert the machine itself to ESXi and run both OSes as images under ESXi. Downtime for this box is critical, so my preference is most definitly with the first option because it presents very minimal downtime. Doing the second would make downtime quite a few hours to image the machine and then convert the image to a VMware Image.

• Finding the best folder for all users on a Windows machine

  We are making a game which will add a level editor feature soon. We want the user to be able to put levels he's downloaded in a folder and then play it in the game, without any hassle. So, we're looking for a folder that anybody can find, open, write, read, and is multiuser. On Windows Vista / 7, the folder /Users/Public/ look like a great candidate. However, It's not listed in the .net enum System.Environment.SpecialFolder. I have went through them all, and checked what they yield on different Windows versions, and none live up to my requirements. I did find Environment.SpecialFolder.CommonApplicationData, that kinda works, but that folder is hidden (C:\ProgramData) and I assume most users don't display hidden folders. As it stands now, it looks like we'll have to settle for the personal documents folder, but we'd really like a multi user folder? Anyone have any tips? (Hard coding c:\Users\Public\ is out of the question, it will only work on english systems)

Considering the follwing: Personal experience Language features (pointers, OO, etc) Suitability for learning DS & A concepts I ask because there are some books out there that are programming language-agnostic (written from a Mathematical perspective, and use pseudocode). If I learn from one of these I would like to work out the algorithms in a chosen language. Then, there are other books which introduce DS & A concepts with examples in a particular programming laguage - and I would follow these examples as well.   Hello! I'm developing an administration panel (in php), for a website (in a shared host), to let the administrator to manage the personal infos of the employees! With this panel should be possible to create or delete an e-mail account for an employee and if the employee logs in the admin panel, he/she should be able to access to his/her e-mail account! I had thought to install Horde WebMail on the website to let the employees use their e-mail accounts ... but how can I pass the login credentials to Horde? And what you suggest to create and delete the e-mails account that can be read by Horde? Any other suggestion is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!! I'm interested in creating my own website, or possibly just a stand alone windows program for tracking my finances in ASP.NET or C#.NET. I'm assuming the answer is no, but is there any way that a personal developer can download transactions from financial websites like these? I know once you login to most financial sites you can download a CSV or Quicken file. Yet I really like how I can log-in to my Mint.com account and update all my accounts with one click.

• How can I make XAnalogTV fill my screen?

  I recently installed xscreensaver, as well as the additional/extra screensavers. Many of the OpenGL ones function correctly, going fullscreen as expected. However, for some reason, the XAnalogTV screensaver leaves two "blank" spots on the edges of my screen. If I manually launch XAnalogTV, it displays a window, which it fills correctly. When I maximize the window, the same effect occurs: the window maximizes, but the two edges of the screen are literally "transparent". This effect also occurs when the screensaver is set to fullscreen. For these reasons, I believe the problem may be related to the aspect ratio of the screen. The edges of the screen are literally "ignored", with nothing being drawn there. Specifically, note the transition between the maximized and full-screen screenshots (with the un-drawn whitespace shrinking as the vertical height has been increased). For reference, I am running Xubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Vostro 1520 (Intel P8600, Nvidia 9300M) with a 1440 x 900 display (16:10). I have also set the GetViewPortIsFullOfLies preference to true. Is there any way to force XAnalogTV to fill my entire screen? Relevant screenshots (windowed, maximized, and full-screen, respectively):

• Implementing OFX specification with javascript

  Hey all, I am working on a personal project and need to retrieve financial data. After looking around how this is normally done it seems you can pay lots of money and license a service like Yodlee to get this data for you or you can implement a OFX client like wesabe has to communicate with financial institutions. Seeing as I don't have lots of money and wouldn't mind the challenge I decided to try to implement the ofx spec (unless one of you can suggest a cheap/free alternative!). I looked around for some ofx libraries other people have already written for use but didn't find anything that looked too great. I was wondering if anyone knew if it would be a bad idea to attempt this in Javascript (using XMLSocket from actionscript to handle the actual socket communication). If there is some really bad reason why I shouldn't do this please bring it up. If there is I'll just do it in Java but I think it would be neat to have it completely in javascript so it runs client-side. Anyways I was hoping for some helpful input, thanks.

  Hi, I always again encounter discussions about where to place the business logic: inside a business layer in the application code or down in the DB in terms of stored procedures. Personally I'd tend to the 1st approach, but I'd like to hear some opinions from your part first, without influencing you with my personal views. I know there doesn't exist a one-size-fits-all solution and it often depends on many factors, but we can discuss about that. Btw, we are in the context of web applications and our current approach is to have UI layer which accepts UI input and does a first, client-side validation Business layer with a number of service-classes which contains the business logic including validation for user input (server-side) Data Access Layer which calls stored procedures from the DB for doing persistency/read operations Many people however tend to move the business layer stuff (especially regarding the validation) down to the DB in terms of stored procedures. What do you think about it? I'd like to discuss.

  Hi. I am creating a portfolio page for m personal site. I have a slider with approx 20 anchors that link to projects I have worked on, each one contains a client logo that when clicked should load some html content then fade that content into a container div on the same page. I have been advised to use the JQuery method load() which seems straight forward. The question I have is do I have to repeat the following code for each of the 20 anchors as the url is different for each one or is there a more efficient way? $('a#project1').click(function() { $('#work').load('ajax/project1.html'); } Also would I have to use the unload() method first to ensure the div I am loading into is empty?
