  • Fast inter-thread communication mechanism

    - by Stan
I need a fast inter-thread communication mechanism for passing work (void*) from TBB tasks to several workers which are running blocking operations. Currently I'm looking into using pipe()+libevent. Is there a faster and more elegant alternative for use with Intel Threading Building Blocks?

  • What's a good library to do computational geometry (like CGAL) in a garbage-collected language?

    - by Squash Monster
I need a library to handle computational geometry in a project, especially boolean operations, but just about every feature is useful. The best library I can find for this is CGAL, but this is the sort of project I would hesitate to make without garbage collection. What language/library pairs can you recommend? So far my best bet is importing CGAL into D. There is also a project for making Python bindings for CGAL, but it's very incomplete.

  • Built-in precedence in Expression Trees?

    - by jdk
I'm unable to find the .NET FCL built-in concept of precedence to leverage while constructing Expression Trees. Ref System.Linq.Expressions Namespace. Is this something that must be handled manually in code, or is it somehow implicit and I'm not recognizing it? Maybe through helper methods or classes? I want to apply it to math operations to ensure 3 + 5 * 10 results in 53 instead of 80.

  • Concept of GUI's - Centralized or decentralized

    - by wvd
Hello all, Since a few months I've been learning Erlang, and now it was time to do some basic GUI. After some quick research I saw there was an interesting library called 'wxi' (based on Fudgets of Haskell) which uses a different approach on GUI's. No central loop, every widget processes it's own events and handles it's own data. What do you guys think about this? It looks like it kind of can be efficient in languages such as Erlang, and it's an interesting approach. William van Doorn

  • Cleanest way to build an SQL string in Java

    - by Vidar
I want to build an SQL string to do database manipulation (updates, deletes, inserts, selects, that sort of thing) - instead of the awful string concat method using millions of "+"'s and quotes which is unreadable at best - there must be a better way. I did think of using MessageFormat - but its supposed to be used for user messages, although I think it would do a reasonable job - but I guess there should be something more aligned to SQL type operations in the java sql libraries. Would Groovy be any good? Any help much appreciated.

  • Access Services and SharePoint 2010 - Need Info

    - by Mayo
I've been asked to research the ability to publish Access solutions directly to SharePoint as demonstrated in the demo below. http://channel9.msdn.com/shows/Access/Microsoft-Access-2010-Demo/ I'm going to keep searching via Google / Bing - but I thought I'd check here to see if anyone has any good links to information on this feature. At first glance it seems like I'm getting alot of brief blog entries with links to the SP2009 conference or to the above video.

  • Basis for claim that the number of bugs per line of code is constant regardless of the language used

    - by Matt R
I've heard people say (although I can't recall who in particular) that the number of bugs per line of code is roughly constant regardless of what language is used. What is the research that backs this up? Edited to add: I don't have access to it, but apparently the authors of this paper "asked the question whether the number of bugs per lines of code (LOC) is the same for programs written in different programming languages or not."

  • append files to an archive without reading/rewriting the whole archive

    - by bene
I've got many files that I want to store in a single archive file. My first approach was to store the files in a gzipped tarball. The problem is, that I've to rewrite the whole archive if a single file is added. I could get rid of the gzip compression, but adding a file would still be expensive. What other archive format would you suggest that allows fast append operations?

  • Drag and Drop from Flash/Flex to HTML and Vice-Versa...

    - by jsight
Is there a library simplifying the process of dragging and dropping between the Flash/Flex environment and the surrounding browser? I've done some research on the process, and so far the closest thing that I have found is from HTML to Flash in a Floorplanning application. I have yet to find a demo going in the other direction however. Is there a simpler way to do this now?

  • Multiuser XML document "database" for asp.net app

    - by Pierreten
I was thinking about a way to allow multiple users to get CRUD access to an XML document in an asp.net app. The operations would obviously have to be made under the assumption of a multithreaded environment. For perf reasons, would it make sense to cache the document, and use a mutex on that cached version? When would changes be flushed to the physical XML document? Any and all recommendations are appreciated (also "use a database" isn't an option at this point unfortunately)

  • How to add two java.lang.Numbers?

    - by amit.dev
I have two Numbers. Eg: Number a = 2; Number b = 3; //Following is an error: Number c = a + b; Why arithmetic operations are not supported on Numbers? Anyway how would I add these two numbers in java? (Of course I'm getting them from somewhere and I don't know if they are Integer or float etc).

  • Is there any sence in performing binary AND with a number where all bits are set to 1

    - by n535
Greetings everybody. I have seen examples of such operations for so many times that i began to think that i am getting something wrong with binary arithmetics. Is there any sense to perform the following: byte value = someAnotherByteValue & 0xFF; I don't really understand this, because it does not change anything anyway. Thanks for help. P.S. I was trying to search for information both elsewhere and here, but unsuccessfully.

  • Efficient algorithm to find a maximum common subset of two sets?

    - by datasunny
Each set contains bunch of checksums. For example: Set A: { 4445968d0e100ad08323df8c895cea15 a67f8052594d6ba3f75502c0b91b868f 07736dde2f8484a4a3af463e05f039e3 5b1e374ff2ba949ab49870ca24d3163a } Set B: { 6639e1da308fd7b04b7635a17450df7c 4445968d0e100ad08323df8c895cea15 a67f8052594d6ba3f75502c0b91b868f } The maximum common subset of A and B is: { 4445968d0e100ad08323df8c895cea15 a67f8052594d6ba3f75502c0b91b868f } A lot of this operations will be performed, so I'm looking for an efficient algorithm to do so. Thanks for your help.

  • What do you think is the best language for Bioinformatics?

    - by Ben Fossen
I have done a couple research jobs in Bio-informatics and I have used Matlab for them. Matlab had a lot of powerful tools and was easy to use. I did thinks with genome sequencing and predicting metabolic pathways. I am wondering what other people think is best? or there might not be one specific language but a few that lend themselves best to Bio-informatics work that is math heavy and deals with a large amount of data.

  • Instagram API how to get user ID?

    - by user1355300
How can I get the user ID with the user name with instagram API without user authentication? If I try users/search, it returns multiple research results, so how can I be sure that I get the result of exact user name only? For example, following requests return multiple users having their usernames similiar to aliciakeys, I want to get only the data of the user with exact user name. https://api.instagram.com/v1/users/search?q=aliciakeys&access_token=232967857.f59def8.c44c9e739efb4c52ab858bc84f420d00

  • Google Maps as background

    - by Puru puru rin..
Hi, Is there a sexy way to get a web page with Google Maps (in fullscreen), and just a small div#header on the top and a small div#container on the middle? I had make some research and I had found this example: http://koti.mbnet.fi/ojalesa/exam/index.html ... but this is not exactly what I would like to do. If you have a thin code example of a nice website example, this would help me a lot. Many Thanks.

  • long vs. short branches in version control

    - by Vincenzo
I wonder whether anyone knows some research done with the question "What is good/bad in long/short branches in version control?" I'm specifically interested in academic researches performed in this field. My questions are: What problems (or conflicts) long branches may produce and how to deal with them How to split a big task onto smaller branches/sub-tasks How to coordinate the changes in multiple short branches, related to the same code Thanks in advance for links and suggestions!
