  • Outsourcing Studies

    - by Mashmagar
Outsourcing is typically disliked by programmers, but does anyone know any empirical studies of the cost/benefits of outsourcing for a company? I'm not looking for personal experiences here (as entertaining/frightening as they may be), but for actual research studies.

  • Scalability comparison between different DBMSs

    - by Björn Lindfors
By what factor does the performance (read queries/sec) increase when a machine is added to a cluster of machines running either: a Bigtable-like database MySQL? Google's research paper on Bigtable suggests that "near-linear" scaling is achieved can be achieved with Bigtable. This page here featuring MySQL's marketing jargon suggests that MySQL is capable of scaling linearly. Where is the truth?

  • wamp server not working? or bad php code

    - by lclaud
I have this PHP code: <?php $username="root"; $password="******";// censored out $database="bazadedate"; mysql_connect("127.0.0.1",$username,$password); // i get unknown constant localhost if used instead of the loopback ip @mysql_select_db($database) or die( "Unable to select database"); $query="SELECT * FROM backup"; $result=mysql_query($query); $num=mysql_numrows($result); $i=0; $raspuns=""; while ($i < $num) { $data=mysql_result($result,$i,"data"); $suma=mysql_result($result,$i,"suma"); $cv=mysql_result($result,$i,"cv"); $det=mysql_result($result,$i,"detaliu"); $raspuns = $raspuns."#".$data."#".$suma."#".$cv."#".$det."@"; $i++; } echo "<b> $raspuns </b>"; mysql_close(); ?> And it should return a single string containing all data from the table. But it says "connection reset when loading page". the log is : [Tue Jun 15 16:20:31 2010] [notice] Parent: child process exited with status 255 -- Restarting. • Are there any implementations of multiset for .Net?

    - by dangph
I'm looking for a .Net implementation of a multiset. Can anyone recommend a good one? (A multiset, or bag, is a set that can have duplicate values, and on which you can do set operations: intersection, difference, etc. A shopping cart for instance could be thought of as a multiset because you can have multiple occurrences of the same product.)

  • Django model fields getter / setter

    - by pistacchio
Hi, is there something like getters and setters for django model's fields? For example, I have a text field in which i need to make a string replace before it get saved (in the admin panel, for both insert and update operations) and make another, different replace each time it is read. Those string replace are dynamic and need to be done at the moment of saving and reading. As I'm using python 2.5, I cannot use python 2.6 getters / setters. Any help?

  • parallel java libraries

    - by jetru
I'm looking for Java libraries/applications which are parallel and feature objects that can be queried in parallel. That is, there is/are objects in which multiple types of operations can be made from different threads and these will be synchronized. It would be helpful if someone could ideas of where I could find such applications as well. EDIT: Actually, language doesn't matter so much, so C++, Python, anything is welcome

  • SQL Code Smells

    - by Lijo
Hi Team, Could you please list some of the bad practices in SQL, that novice people do? I have found the use of "WHILE loop" in scenarios which could be resolved using set operations. Another example is inserting data only if it does not exist. This can be achieved using LEFT OUTER JOIN. Some people go for "IF" Any other thoughts? Thanks Lijo

  • Why does std queue not define a swap method specialisation

    - by Jamie Cook
I've read that all stl containers provide a specialisation of the swap algorithm so as to avoid calling the copy constructor and two assignment operations that the default method uses. However, when I thought it would be nice to use a queue in some code I was working on I noticed that (unlike vector and deque) queue doesn't provide this method? I just decided to use a deque instead of a queue, but still I'm interested to know why this is?

  • Executing a .NET Managed Assembly from SQL Server 2008 - Pro's, Con's & Recommendations

    - by RPM1984
Hi guys, looking for opinions/recommendations/links for the following scenario im currently facing. The Platform: .NET 4.0 Web Application SQL Server 2008 The Task: Overhaul a component of the system that performs (fairly) complex mathematical operations based on a specific user activity, and updates numerous tables in the database. A common user activity might be "Bob" decides to post a forum topic. This results in (the end-solution) needing to look at various factors (about the post he did), then after doing some math based on lookup values/ratios as well as other data in the database, inserting some other data as a result of these operations. The Options: Ok - so here's what im thinking. Although it would be much easier to do this in C# (LINQ-SQL) it doesnt make much sense as the majority of the computations are based on values in the db, and it will get difficult to control/optimize/debug the LINQ over time. Hence, im leaning towards created a managed assembly (C# Class Library) that contains the lookup values (constants) as well as leveraging the math classes in the existing .NET BCL. Basically i'd expose a few methods that can be called by the T-SQL Stored Procedures. This to me has the following advantages: Simplicity of math. Do complex math in .NET vs complex math in T-SQL. No brainer. =) Abstraction of computatations, configurable "lookup" values and business logic from raw T-SQL. T-SQL only needs to care about the data, simplifying the stored procedures and making it easier to maintain. When it needs to do math it delegates off to the managed assembly. So, having said that - ive never done this before (call .NET assmembly from T-SQL), and after some googling the best site i could come up with is here, which is useful but outdated. So - what am i asking? Well, firstly - i need some better references on how to actually do this. "This" being how to call a C# .NET 4 Assembly from within T-SQL Stored Procedures in SQL Server 2008. Secondly, who out there has done this, what problems (if any) did you face? Realize this may be difficult to provide a "correct answer", so ill try to give it to whoever gives me the answer with a combination of good links and a list of pro's/con's/problems with this implementation. Cheers!

  • What do you call the << operator in Ruby when it's used for appending stuff?

    - by more or less
In other contexts I know this << is called the bitshift operator. Is there a name for it when it's just used for append operations like you would do in an array or string (not sure what else you can append with it)? I'd like to be able to use an English word to refer to it instead of saying "you know, the operator with the two left arrows that's not really the left bitshift operator".

  • What kind of events should be created for a CRUD application?

    - by Mohit Deshpande
I have an application that is centered around a database (ORM is LINQ-SQL) that has a table called Assignment. I am using the repository pattern to manipulate the database. My application is basically going to perform CRUD operations. I am new to delegates and events and I am asking you what events I should create (like maybe AssignmentCreating, AssignmentCreated) and what kind of delegate to use (like maybe a custom delegate or just an EventHandler)?

  • Package to compare LSA, TFIDF, Cosine metrics and Language Models

    - by gouwsmeister
Hi, I'm looking for a package (any language, really) that I can use on a corpus of 50 documents to perform interdocument similarity testing in various metrics, like tfidf, okapi, language models, lsa, etc. I want as a result a document similarity matrix, i.e. doc1 is x% similar to doc2, etc... This is for research purposes, not for production. I specifically want the doc similarity matrix as I want to correlate this with human ratings. Thank you in advance!

  • Getting a specific bit value in a byte string

    - by ignoramus
There is a byte at a specific index in a byte string which represents eight flags; one flag per bit in the byte. If a flag is set, its corresponding bit is 1, otherwise its 0. For example, if I've got b'\x21' the flags would be 0001 0101 # Three flags are set at indexes 3, 5 and 7 # and the others are not set What would be the best way to get each bit value in that byte, so I know whether a particular flag is set or not? (Preferably using bitwise operations)

  • Recommended textbook for machine-level programming?

    - by Norman Ramsey
I'm looking at textbooks for an undergraduate course in machine-level programming. If the perfect book existed, this is what it would look like: Uses examples written in C or assembly language, or both. Covers machine-level operations such as two's-complement integer arithmetic, bitwise operations, and floating-point arithmetic. Explains how caches work and how they affect performance. Explains machine instructions or assembly instructions. Bonus if the example assembly language includes x86; triple bonus if it includes x86-64 (aka AMD64). Explains how C values and data structures are represented using hardware registers and memory. Explains how C control structures are translated into assembly language using conditional and unconditional branch instructions. Explains something about procedure calling conventions and how procedure calls are implemented at the machine level. Books I might be interested in would probably have the words "machine organization" or "computer architecture" in the title. Here are some books I'm considering but am not quite happy with: Computer Systems: A Programmer's Perspective by Randy Bryant and Dave O'Hallaron. This is quite a nice book, but it's a book for a broad, shallow course in systems programming, and it contains a great deal of material my students don't need. Also, it is just out in a second edition, which will make it expensive. Computer Organization and Design: The Hardware/Software Interface by Dave Patterson and John Hennessy. This is also a very nice book, but it contains way more information about how the hardware works than my students need. Also, the exercises look boring. Finally, it has a show-stopping bug: it is based very heavily on MIPS hardware and the use of a MIPS simulator. My students need to learn how to use DDD, and I can't see getting this to work on a simulator. Not to mention that I can't see them cross-compiling their code for the simulator, and so on and so forth. Another flaw is that the book mentions the x86 architecture only to sneer at it. I am entirely sympathetic to this point of view, but news flash! You guys lost! Write Great Code Vol I: Understanding the Machine by Randall Hyde. I haven't evaluated this book as thoroughly as the other two. It has a lot of what I need, but the translation from high-level language to assembler is deferred to Volume Two, which has mixed reviews. My students will be annoyed if I make them buy a two-volume series, even if the price of those two volumes is smaller than the price of other books. I would really welcome other suggestions of books that would help students in a class where they are to learn how C-language data structures and code are translated to machine-level data structures and code and where they learn how to think about performance, with an emphasis on the cache.

  • What is the need of collection framework in java?

    - by JavaUser
Hi, What is the need of Collection framework in Java since all the data operations(sorting/adding/deleting) are possible with Arrays and moreover array is suitable for memory consumption and performance is also better compared with Collections. Can anyone point me a real time data oriented example which shows the difference in both(array/Collections) of these implementations. Thx

  • Python vs. Java performance (runtime speed)

    - by Bijan
Ignoring all the characteristics of each languages and focusing SOLELY on speed, which language is better performance-wise? You'd think this would be a rather simple question to answer, but I haven't found a decent one. I'm aware that some types of operations may be faster with python, and vice-versa, but I cannot find any detailed information on this. Can anyone shed some light on the performance differences?

  • High speed matrix manipulation in c#?

    - by Donnie
I'm working on some image manipulation code in c# and need to do some matrix operations (specifically 2D convolution). I have the code written in matlab which uses the conv2 function ... is there a library for C# / .NET that does good high-speed matrix manipulations? I'd be fine if it requires some specific GPU and does the matrix math on-GPU if that's what it takes.

  • NSOperation inside NSOperationQueue not being executed

    - by Martin Garcia
I really need help here. I'm desperate at this point. I have NSOperation that when added to the NSOperationQueue is not being triggered. I added some logging to see the NSOperation status and this is the result: Queue operations count = 1 Queue isSuspended = 0 Operation isCancelled? = 0 Operation isConcurrent? = 0 Operation isFinished? = 0 Operation isExecuted? = 0 Operation isReady? = 1 Operation dependencies? = 0 The code is very simple. Nothing special. LoadingConflictEvents_iPad *loadingEvents = [[LoadingConflictEvents_iPad alloc] initWithNibName:@"LoadingConflictEvents_iPad" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]]; loadingEvents.modalPresentationStyle = UIModalPresentationFormSheet; loadingEvents.conflictOpDelegate = self; [self presentModalViewController:loadingEvents animated:NO]; [loadingEvents release]; ConflictEventOperation *operation = [[ConflictEventOperation alloc] initWithParameters:wiLr.formNumber pWI_ID:wiLr.wi_id]; [queue addOperation:operation]; NSLog(@"Queue operations count = %d",[queue operationCount]); NSLog(@"Queue isSuspended = %d",[queue isSuspended]); NSLog(@"Operation isCancelled? = %d",[operation isCancelled]); NSLog(@"Operation isConcurrent? = %d",[operation isConcurrent]); NSLog(@"Operation isFinished? = %d",[operation isFinished]); NSLog(@"Operation isExecuted? = %d",[operation isExecuting]); NSLog(@"Operation isReady? = %d",[operation isReady]); NSLog(@"Operation dependencies? = %d",[[operation dependencies] count]); [operation release]; Now my operation do many things on the main method, but the problem is never being called. The main is never executed. The most weird thing (believe me, I'm not crazy .. yet). If I put a break point in any NSLog line or in the creation of the operation the main method will be called and everything will work perfectly. This have been working fine for a long time. I have been making some changes recently and apparently something screw things up. One of those changes was to upgrade the device to iOS 5.1 SDK (iPad). To add something, I have the iPhone (iOS 5.1) version of this application that use the same NSOperation object. The difference is in the UI only, and everything works fine. Any help will be really appreciated. Regards,
