  Messing about a bit, i have a working Adobe After Effects plugin with a bit of Obj-c / Cocoa in it (NSArray and custom objects - not ui stuff). The SDK guide states:- Always use After Effects memory allocation functions. In low-memory conditions (such as during RAM preview), it’s very important that plug-ins not compete with After Effects for OS memory, and deal gracefully with out-of-memory conditions. Failing to use our functions can cause lock-ups, crashes, and tech support calls. Don’t do that. If you’re wrapping existing C++ code, overloading new and delete to use our functions will save substantial reimplementation. On Windows, derive all classes from a common base class which implements new and delete. so my question.. is something compatible with the above statement possible in Obj-c?

• How to center an R plot after removing axis labels

  I'm working on visualizing a matrix in R (almost exactly like http://reference.wolfram.com/mathematica/ref/MatrixPlot.html), and I've been using image(<matrix>,axes=FALSE) to draw the picture. However, I noticed that with the y-axis turned off, the plot isn't centered--the space is still there for the axis ticks + label. I can finagle some centering with par(oma=c(0,0,0,2.5)) but this seems inefficient and error-prone (if my matrix were to change dimensions/become non-square). Is there a better way to force the graphic to center? The right hand margin is significantly smaller than the left.

The obvious costs are those of creating weak references and calling get on them. A less obvious cost is that significant extra work needs to be done each time the GC runs. So what exactly is the cost to the GC of a weak ref? What extra work does it need to do, and how big of a deal is it? I can make some educated guesses, but am interested in the actual mechanics.

• Should I integrate FedEx or UPS into my Rails app?

  I'm working on integrating a shipping solution into a Rails ecommerce app. We're only going to use one shipping provider. So the question is: FedEx or UPS? I'm wondering what Rails developers think about the tech side of this question. What do you think about the APIs, ease of integration, focus on developer's needs between FedEx and UPS? I was leaning towards FedEx, but from looking at the developers resources sections of both sites, it seems that UPS might be more developer friendly. Also, I'm going to be using Shopify's active_shipping gem: http://github.com/Shopify/active_shipping And I also based my app off the Spree Ecommerce solution, but I don't think that's particularly relevant to the question. Spree wrote a wrapper to integrate active_shipping with the Spree system. Thanks.

  I'm attempting to write a wrapper so that my C# application can use a DLL written in C. Here is a method defintion that i'm trying to wrap: void methodA(const uint32_t *data); //c header declaration The issue I'm having is trying to figure out how to give a equivalent pointer from c#. In c# I want it to operate on a: UInt32 data[] //my c# object i want to be able to pass in but how do I give an equivalent pointer in my wrapper? I have tried ref data //my attempt at giving an equivalent pointer to the DLL but that doesnt seem to be working. Using debug statements in the DLL I can see that the values it gets that way are not what I'm attempting to pass in. So my question boils down to have do I properly wrap a c fuction that is using a pointer to reference an array?

  Hi , I have a Fortran 77 program code , I am using fortran power station on XP .   Ok, maybe this isn't so amazing considering I don't really understand how the debugger works in the first place, let alone Edit and Continue, which is totally amazing. But I was wondering if anyone knew what the debugger is doing with variable declarations in this scenario. I can be debugging through my code, move the line of execution ahead - past a variables initial declaration and assignment, and the code still runs ok. If it's a value type it will have it's default value, for a ref type, null. So if I create a function that uses a variable before it's declared it won't compile, but if I use the debugger to run it that way it will still run without error. Why is this? And is this related to the fact that you can't put a breakpoint on a declaration?

• DB4o Linq query - How to check for null strings

  Hey there - simple query: var q = (from SomeObject o in container where o.SomeInt > 8 && o.SomeString != null //Null Ref here select o; I always get a null reference exception. If I use String.IsNullOrEmpty(o.SomeString) the query takes about 100 times as long, as if I use && o.SomeString != "" (which is way faster, but obviously not correct). I'm guessing because DB4o needs to activate the objects, in order to pass them in to the IsNullOrEmpty call, and can't use the indexes. My question is, what's a better way to check for nulls in this situation? Is there something like: mystring != Db4o.DBNull.Value, or something? Cheers, Dave

• How do you run a uncompiled CGI?

  I'm going to get right to it. iPage shared hosting. Trying to use mimetex.cgi to render math. Source code is at the link. After preparing everything just as I had with a different shared host (which worked), I get errors. Tech support tells me I need to upload the uncompiled source and use that instead. ??? Rather than going with them just being ignorant and wrong, I'm going to assume I'm missing something. How am I supposed to execute and make use of the uncompiled source code? What the hell is wrong with a hosting service that doesn't support running compiled CGI written in C (as far as I can tell)?

  I've written a WCF IDispatchMessageInspector, so I can log incomming and outgoing messages. But I'm not sure how to get a nicely-formatted XML string to log. My code looks something like this: public object AfterReceiveRequest(ref Message request, IClientChannel channel, InstanceContext instanceContext) { MessageBuffer buffer = request.CreateBufferedCopy(Int32.MaxValue); request = buffer.CreateMessage(); Log("Received", request.ToString(); return null; } The result of this logging includes things like "ampersand lt;" and some sort of binary-encoded data. I think that speeches or presentations from developers or even creators of programming languages which were or are heavily used at some point are particulary interesting. One of my favorite speeches was recommended to me by someone here on SO: The future of C# I also like Guido van Rossum's speeches but he sometimes seems pretty nervous. Another in my opinion good presentation would be the Google tech talk about Go. • passing array of structs from c# to regular dll

  Hi there I have a regular dll with the followign fucntion exported. extern "C" __declspec(dllexport) int FindNearestStuff(double _latitude, double _longitude , LocationStruct * locations[]) LocationStruct is very simple struct LocationStruct { long positionIndex; long item; }; I'm tryign to call it from c# using [DllImport("myclever.dll", CharSet = CharSet.None)] private static extern int FindNearestStuff(double _latitude, double _longitude, ref LocationStruct [] locations); Its all cool and funky and i can step into the dll function from the debugger. Inside the dll the LocationStruct array is populated correctly and all is very good. the problem i have is when it returns back from the dll, the LocationStruct array is not coming back with the data - just empty values... what am i missing? cheers Buzz

• Java Spring 3.0 MVC Annotation vs COC. Whats the preferred method in the Java community?

  I am using Spring's MVC framework for an application I'm hosting on Google's App Engine. So far, my controllers are registered via the @Controller annotation; however, prior to getting into Spring, I evaluated ASP.net MVC 2 which requires no configuration and is based on convention. Is convention over configuration (COC) the current and preferred method in the Java community to implement MVC with Spring. Also, this may be a result of my limited knowledge so far but i noticed that i could only instantiate my Controllers the required constuctor injection if i use the COC method via the ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping. For instance the following controller bean config will fail if i use the defaultannotationhandlermapping. <bean id="c" class="com.domain.TestController"> <constructor-arg ref="service" /> </bean> <bean id="service" class="com.domain.Service" /> My com.domain.TestController controller works fine if i use ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping/COC but it results in an error when i use defaultannotationhandlermapping/Annotations.

For example, you can add a method (with a default implementation) to an abstract class without breaking old implementations of the class". What does it mean (especially what means "breaking old implementations of the class")? After the datarow is read (match the target type), it will be deleted. However, the row is deleted immediately after .Delete() execute, so the location of the next row (by i) is incorrect. For example, if TargetType is A. When i=0, the "Peter" row is deleted after .Delete executed. Then when i=1, I suppose it will locate the "Sam" row but it actually located "John" row because "Peter" row is deleted. Is there any problem in my codes?

• Service injection into Controller (Spring MVC)

  Hi I have a Spring web application, I have built it up to the controller stage and I could inject my Daos, into my Services fine. Now when I want to inject my Service into my controller i get an error for dependency with the Dao and further down the sessionFactory. I don't want to inject these again cause this will ultimately lead me to eventually create a data source but I have my Daos for data access and they already know about sessionFactory.   I have a really simple stored procedure that looks like this: CREATE PROCEDURE _Visitor_GetVisitorIDByVisitorGUID ( @VisitorGUID AS UNIQUEIDENTIFIER ) AS DECLARE @VisitorID AS bigint SELECT @VisitorID = VisitorID FROM dbo.Visitor WHERE VisitorGUID = @VisitorGUID --Here's what I've tried RETURN @VisitorID 'Returns an IDataReader SELECT @VisitorID 'Returns an IDataReader --I've also set it up with a single output --parameter, but that means I need to pass --the long in by ref and that's hideous to me I'm trying to get nettiers to generate a method with this signature: public long VisitorService.GetVisitorIDByVisitorGUID(GUID visitorGUID); Basically I want Nettiers to call ExecuteScalar instead of ExecuteReader. What am I doing wrong?

• Git to SVN trouble

  My boss has a Perforce repository for which he wants to make a read-only copy available on Sourceforge via subversion. He had a perl script which would do this but it's no longer functioning (we don't want to try debugging it yet) and it's really not that great anyway. So an alternate solution is to pull the perforce repo into git as a remote ref, which I have already done successfully (including all the proper commit details and authors), now the trouble I'm having is pushing it out to a separate SVN repository. I can make it start the commit process with "git svn dcommit --add-author-from", but the problem is even though the correct author appears at the end of the commit message the "real" author committing is my machine's user. I want to preserve the real author with the commit, and I'd also like to preserve the original timestamps as well. Is anyone familiar with how I could accomplish this?

  From an iTunes page, like http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/this-week-in-tech-mp3-edition/id73329404, is there a way to extract the corresponding feed address? In this case it would be http://leoville.tv/podcasts/twit.xml. I know that if you open on iTunes you can extract it manually, but I want to do it programmatically. There's a link to the website of the podcast, but it may not be accurate. In this case it points to a web site with 20 podcasts on it.
