  • What to monitor on MSSQL Server

    Hi all I have been asked to monitor MSSQL Server (2005 & 2008) and am wondering what are good metrics to look at? I can access WMI counters but am slightly lost as to how much depth is going to be useful. Currently I have on my list: user connections logins per second latch waits per second total latch wait time dead locks per second errors per second Log and data file sizes I am looking to be able to monitor values that will indicate a degradation of performance on the machine or a potential serious issue. To this end I am also wondering at what values some of these things would be considered normal vs problematic? As I reckon it would probably be a really good question to have answered for the general community I thought i'd court some of you DBA experts out there (I am certainly not one of them!)   • Oracle - timed sampling from v$session_longops

    I am trying to track performance on some procedures that run too slow (and seem to keep getting slower). I am using v$session_longops to track how much work has been done, and I have a query (sofar/((v$session_longops.LAST_UPDATE_TIME-v$session_longops.start_time)*24*60*60)) that tells me the rate at which work is being done. What I'd like to be able to do is capture the rate at which work is being done and how it changes over time. Right now, I just re-execute the query manually, and then copy/paste to Excel. Not very optimal, especially when the phone rings or something else happens to interrupt my sampling frequency. Is there a way to have script in SQL*Plus run a query evern n seconds, spool the results to a file, and then continue doing this until the job ends? (Oracle 10g)

I am currently launching the program as follows in C#: String plinkConString = ""; // my connection string Process plink = Process.Start(utilityPath + @"\putty.exe", plinkConString); int plinkProcessId = plink.Id; I launch the program and grab its pid in a Windows environment. As Putty/PLink may disconnect from its SSH server at some point and close, what is the best way to monitor how this process is doing in code? Is there a better way to launch this program to monitor its success or failure?

    How can you programmatically measure per-process (or better, per-thread) CPU usage under windows 95, windows 98 and windows ME? If it requires the DDK, where can you obtain that? Please note the Win9x requirement. It's easy on NT. EDIT: I tried installing the Win95/98 version of WMI, but Win32_Process.KernelModeTime and Win32_Process.UserModeTime return Null (as do most Win32_Process properties under win9x).

    Im looking for a way to moniter system statistics, here are my main points of interest: CPU Tempature CPU speed, (Cycles per second) CPU Load (Idle percent) GPU Tempature Some other points of interest: Memory useage Network Load (Traffic Up/Down) My ultimate goal is to write an application that can be used for easily running in the backround, and allow setting many events fr certain actions, for instance When processer temp gets to 56C -> Do _Blank_ etc. So this leaves me two main points. Is there a framework already out there for this sort of thing? If No to #1, How can i go about doing this?

  • Monitor and Terminate Python script based on system resource use

    What is the "right" or "best" way to monitor the system resources a python script is using and terminate it if the resource use exceeds some predetermined values. In my case memory usage is of concern. I am not asking how to measure the system resource use although I am open to suggestions. As a simple example, let's assume I have a function that finds prime numbers less than some large number and adds them to a list based on some condition. I don't know ahead of time how many prime numbers will satisfy the condition so I what to be sure to terminate the function if I use up to much system memory (8gb lets say). I know that there are ways to monitor the size of python objects. What I don't know is the proper way to monitor the size of the list and exit is to just include a size test in the prime function loop and exit if it exceeds 8gb or if there is an "external" way to monitor and exit.

  • Parallel port no longer accessible even though no changes to system.

    I have an old Dell Dimension 8200 running Gentoo which I use solely to control various things using the parallel port. After shutting it down a few weeks ago, I started it up again today and tried to access the parallel port like I usually do. Unfortunately, my code bombed out when it tried to call ioperm(888,1,1) to grab the parallel port which returned an error code of -1. There have been no changes to the system be it hardware or software, no updates, no tweaking, no dropping the case, no over-amping the data pins, nothing. The port and the software have been working fine for months with no changes, and were working fine when I shut it down last. Running my code with root privileges changes nothing. What is breaking this and how can I fix it?

  • Security Exception when using Custom ASP.NET Healthmonitoring event in medium trust

    Hi, I'm using custom healthmonitoring events in ASP.NET We recently moved to a new server with default High Trust Permissions. Literature says that healthmonitoring and custom events should work under Medium or higher trust (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb398933.aspx). Problem is - it doesn't. In less than full trust I get a SecurityException saying The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy It works in Full trust or when I remove the inheritance of System.Web.Management.WebErrorEvent. Any suggestions anyone?     What's the best tool that you use to monitor Web Service, SOAP, WCF, etc. traffic that's coming and going on the wire? I have seen some tools that made with Java but they seem to be a little crappy. What I want is a tool that sits in the middle as a proxy and does port redirection (which should have configurable listen/redirect ports). Are there any tools work on Windows to do this?

  • CUDA driver installation on a laptop with nVidia NVS140M card

    I'm trying to first figure out if my computer contains a CUDA-enabled card. It has an nVidia NVS 140M card, but I can't seem to figure out if it is the 128 MB version or 256 MB version. On the laptop purchase receipt, I found out that I ordered the 128 MB version, but the control panel description of the card said otherwise as shown below: When I ran the CUDA driver from nVidia's site, it cannot find a hardware compatible with CUDA (even though the product series is CUDA-enabled, the card does not have 256 MB minimum of memory to do so). What would be your recommendations in this case with trying to use CUDA on this computer (I'm not sure if nothing can be done at this point)? Thanks in advance.

  • Need to know who is hogging my bandwidth?

    I have an ethernet connection to my iMac and with Internet sharing I am broadcasting the wireless network from my mac rather than using a wireless router. I use it to connect other devices wirelessly to the internet. But this makes all the traffic flow through my iMac. I wanted a way to analyze the traffic so that I know what connected devices are hogging the bandwidth at a given time and from which websites? I installed wireshark for mac and played around a little but it seems like an overkill when you first look at it. Can someone please help with few instructions to get what I need or any other way other than using wireshark? Thanks Dev.

    I just deployed to a cluster server, and my delayed_jobs recipe was overwritten in the process. I solved that, delayed_jobs is up and running but can't find the ID of images that are uploaded. Anyone know where I could poke and pry from here? UPDATE: I created a clone application on a single server. And there are no problems. The images on the cluster do show up (occassionally). If I keep clicking on the folders that lead to photos, it will 50% of the time return a 404 with it not being able to find the photo, and the other half it will present the photo. So the problem has got to be with the server interaction between the ActiveRecord through multiple servers.

I know that setting up object access auditing may be an option, but if I use that I then have the problem of trying to match up event log entries to specific files... sounds messy! I simply want develop a c# app that, by example, monitors Firefox, IE, etc and logs all navigated pages. Depending of the visited page, I want to block the site (like a parental filter). Code snippets/samples are good, but if you can just tell me some direction of that classes to use I will be grateful. :-)
