  • Rocky Mountain Tech Trifecta v3.0

  • The Team Behind SQL Saturday 60 In Cleveland

    Last July I asked the assembled group at the Ohio North SQL Server Users Group meeting if they'd be interested in putting on a SQL Saturday. Enthusiastically, they said yes! A great group of people came together and met, first monthly, then every other week, and finally every week, taking time from their families to do the things necessary to put together a SQL Saturday event here in Cleveland.   • Is ICANN planning any changes to domain registration soon?

    The BBC is reporting that domain registration will be changing next year. The .co landgrab could be one of the last before ICANN overhauls the way net addresses are assigned. Next year the body is due to open up the system so that companies and individuals can register any name they want. I haven't heard anything about a change—is the BBC correct, and if so, what are the details?

  • Book Review: Fast Track to MDX

    Another book that I re-read while travelling last week was Fast Track to MDX . I still think that it's the best book that I've seen for introducing the core concepts of MDX. SolidQ colleague Mark Whitehorn, along with Mosha Pasumansky and Robert Zare do an amazing job of building MDX knowledge throughout the book. I had dinner with Mark in London a few years back and I was pestering him to update this book.   • Which Presentation Would You Like to See at the OUG Ireland?

    Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse (OEPE) 12.1.1.0.1 was released to OTN last week with support for new standards and features including: Support for Eclipse Indigo SR2 (3.7.2) Updated server plugins for Glassfish 3.1.2 SSL configuration support for WebLogic Server deployment and debugging   The SSL configuration option can be found when configuring the domain for a new WebLogic Server connection. For Eclipse early adopters, an OEPE 12c update based on Eclipse Juno M6 will be available soon.

  • yahoo media player not working.

    I have a yahoo media player embedded in my webpage. I am currently using Ruby on Rails to create/edit my web page. When i click the play button next to a track the YMP waits a while and then goes to the next track without playing the first one. I then get a warning on my second (last) track that its file could not be found. Does anyone has a better recommendation for an audio player or a way to fix this one?

  • vgaswitcheroo - switch GPU based on load?

    Is it possible to make vgaswitcheroo switch between GPU based on load? For example, when computer would be in idle it would turn off discrete and use only integrated; when enough load would accumulate on it it would automatically turn on discrete graphics and disable integrated. My second question is whether there is any GUI applet or something that I could use to manually switch between GPUs - instead of manually echoing in switch file?   • Please Stop Voting Against a Candidate

    DISCLAIMER:  This is not a post about “Romney” or “Obama”.  This is not a post for whom I am voting.  This is simply a post to address an issue that I cannot ignore any longer.  This two-party system that we have allowed to establish a foothold is killing this country.    More than 2 Options I was recently asked, “If you had to choose Romney or Obama who would you pick?”  I replied “Non sequiter.  The founders of this nation ensured that I never have to pick from only two candidates.”  But somehow that is the way this country’s citizens think.  I told someone last week that there are around 20 candidates for president and she was genuinely surprised.  (There are actually 25 candidates.)  She had no idea there were that many and, even though she knew there are more, she didn’t know any names beyond Romney and Obama.  Well, I am going to try and educate people like her on other options. Vote for a Candidate, not against another Candidate So this post is the first in a series with a little bit of information about each candidate for president.  I implore you…I beg you, please do your civic duty and conduct a little bit of investigation and research on your own to find the right candidate for you.  Hey, if your candidate is Romney or Obama, that’s fine.  As long as it’s an educated decision.  But please…stop voting against a candidate.  Start voting for a candidate.   • VS2010 Launch Presentations

    Last week I was in Vegas to present at the DevConnections / VS2010 Launch event.  The show was well-attended and everybody I spoke to agreed it was educational and enjoyable.  My three talks were all on Wednesday, 14 April 2010, including one at 8am for which I was impressed to see a large turnout in attendance.   Pragmatic ASP.NET Tips, Tricks, and Tools My first session was on tips, tricks, and tools for ASP.NET developers.  This is a talk Ive given in past years, but which I refine every time.  I usually like to have a full session to devote to tools, and a separate talk just for Tips and Tricks, but for this show I was only given the one 75-minute slot, so I had to cut some materials to make things fit.  The talk went well, all the demos work, and the attendees seemed to enjoy it, and I like giving it, so hopefully I can continue to present on this topic in future DevConnections shows. Download the ASP.NET Tips, Tricks, and Tools slides and demos.   Whats New in ASP.NET MVC 2 My second talk of the day followed immediately after the Tips and Tricks talk, and was a brand new talk for me.  I have to throw out a thank-you to Phil for letting me see his MIX slide deck before he gave his talk, as that was a big help.  The official whats new document online is also worth checking out if youre interested in this subject.  Download the Whats New in ASP.NET MVC 2 slides and demos.   SOLIDify Your ASP.NET MVC 2 Application Just because youre using a ASP.NET MVC doesnt mean your code cant still end up being a big ball of mud.  This session describes a number of principles of software design that can help ensure applications remain loosely-coupled and malleable even as they age and increase in features and complexity.  This was my last talk of the day and did have one minor demo failure involving a database constraint.  Ive given this talk many times before, and in this case I had to fit it into a 60-minute timeslot, so Im not sure I had quite enough time to drive home all of the concepts to everyone in the audience.  That said, I did hear a number of positive comments on how the talk went, so thats encouraging.   • Why do I get Unity instead of Classic when using NX?

    Recently I installed FreeNX on my PC and when I login with my 'dev' account I get the Unity interface rather than Classic Gnome. This is odd as my last login before FreeNX was with the Classic interface. I would like to have Classic over FreeNX by default. I do login with a 'watch iplayer' account where the Unity interface works a treat. For this reason I would prefer not to uninstall Unity. Any ideas?
