  • Convert partition to Virtual Disk image

    I have a 250 GB HD with a XP partition. I partitioned the XP Box to 112 GB, since the max Virtual PC can load is 127 GB. I have a new motherboard and can't load into the partition, so I am using Windows 7. I have tried using WinImage to create the image but it creates an image of the whole disc (250 GB) and will not load on Virtual PC cause of the size limit. What would be best to convert to VHD correctly?

  • How to use UMLFS?

    I'm trying to mount what is inside UML session as FUSE filesystem on host. There's "uml_mount" program which looks like a thing for this purpose, but it fails. What is UMLFS (I haven't found any documentation at all) and how to mount it? uml_mount mounts FUSE filesystem and starts uml_mconsole <umid> umlfs <file descriptor> which tries to send this file descriptor to UML kernel (to deal with further FUSE things), but sending fails. Also I haven't found any signs of FUSE inside a kernel. Do I need some special patch for this?

  • Howto boot directly into a VirtualBox image?

    I have a running setup as following: Native OS: Windows 7 64bit, 3 Partitions: c: (System) d: (FAT32, here is my vdi file) e: (unformatted) VirtualBox: Fedora 14 running off the vdi file on drive d. Usually this setup is great for me, but sometimes I'd like to run Linux natively, and not inside VirtualBox. Is there a way to boot directly into the vdi file without the Windows overhead? E.g. using a USB stick with some modified Linux Kernel / GRUB that can mount the vdi file directly as "/"? Or copy the contents of my vdi file to the empty partition and somehow use this from VirtualBox (when booting into Windows) AND directly booting into Linux? Hope to get some hints or even howtos.

  • Why won't apt-get install anything after I deleted its cached lists?

    Recently I had a problem with the update-manager and search for a solution. On my search I found a post, where someone had the same problem and as solution they told him he should run this command on the terminal: sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* I also run this, and the update-manager worked again. But now, I noticed that apt-get won't install anything. I wanted to install rvm (for ruby) and therefore I needed a few packages (build-essential and curl to be precise). But if I tried to install them, I always get the message that there is no installcandidate for that package... . What can I do to get apt-get working again?

    I am using a Cisco 6500 series with an SSO redundancy configuration. The show redundancy output is as follows: Hardware Mode = Duplex Configured Redundancy Mode = sso Operating Redundancy Mode = rpr Maintenance Mode = Disabled Communications = Up I would assume the device is operating in RPR mode although SSO is configured. What could cause this? Shouldn't the operating mode be SSO?     Is there a way to disable the PHP setting safe_mode in a client or domain template in Plesk 8.6? Or, to disable it for new domain creation in some other Plesk setting/configuration? I've Googled, and people seem to think no I've asked our hosting provider, and they don't think so I've looked in both the domain and client templates in Plesk and don't see it Has anyone been able to do this Plesk 8.6 for new domains?

I'm just wondering if the XP-Mode would be a large security loophole, since it's so much more integrated into Windows 7. Actually I'm wondering the same for Portable Ubuntu, are their any safety measures I should undertake, so that I don't open a backdoor on my computer.

    I am building a small portfolio site for myself and have come across an odd quirk. I have an image inside a container, and to allow for multiple screen sizes, I am setting all dimensions in % rather than pixels. in iphone portrait mode, everything is fine.   • Upgrade from "audit mode" (pre-cloning) Windows 8 to Windows 8.1?

    I have a Windows 8 in audit mode with a lot of applications installed, custom configurations done, and an answer file prepared, ready to be sysprepped for cloning. How do I upgrade to Windows 8.1, when I can't go into the store (Metro apps don't work in audit mode)? If I run sysprep then create a normal account so I can get the upgrade from the store, I suppose there's no way to go back to audit mode, and that's a huge problem as I want to retain the particular account settings I have configured for the audit mode account as a default account. What do I do??

    This might sound weird but there's an explanation for my question: I want to write something to impress a potential recruiter, and I want (to strenghten my skills) to create a program which should communicate with kernel mode driver(s). I'm not starting from a goal and trying to design the system to achieve it, I'm doing the opposite: designing the system and trying to justify it with a meaningful goal. So here comes the question: what could a kernel mode driver be possibly useful to?   • Can you make desktop shortcuts to Seamless mode Windows apps in VirtualBox on OSX?

    Running the latest version of VirtualBox on OSX and hosting a Windows virtual machine. Is there a way to put shortcuts on your Mac desktop for the Windows apps that you run in seamless mode? I can't find a way to do this, so every time I want to newly launch a Windows app in seamless mode I have to access the full Windows desktop, start the app and hit HostKey+L. Really a pain for apps that you want to run in seamless mode all time.

  • How to prevent Vista from entering Sleep mode when certain conditions exist?

    Mainly, I would like to prevent my laptop from entering Sleep mode when I am playing music or streaming video. This is on my laptop, so another option that would work would be to prevent sleep mode whenever the laptop is plugged into my tv via HDMI (ie when HDMI port is in use). Or prevent sleep mode whenever there is audio playing.. I am soon upgrading to Windows 7, so solutions using 7 would be great also/instead. Thanks!

    my problem is the that for a Hackintosh (unofficial PC running OS X) I needed to set AHCI, Power Mode S3 and HPET 64bit. Now, I want to install Ubuntu (when 12.04 comes out) and was wondering if these settings will be right to use for Ubuntu. I read that AHCI is how the hard disks are accessed, Power Mode S3 is how suspend works with the RAM but couldn't figure out if using HPET 64bit makes any difference than HPET 32bit. What I would like is an explanation of what these BIOS settings do and what is best for Ubuntu. Thank you very much

    I'm working on a site, and its CMS used to save new page urls using the underscore character as a word seperator. Despite the fact that Google now treats underscore as a word seperator, the SEO powers that be are demanding the site use dashes instead. This is very easy to do within the CMS, and I can of course change all existing URLs saved in the MySQL database that serves the CMS. My problem lies in writing a .htaccess rule that will 301 old style underscore seperated links to the new style hyphenated verstion. It was pretty simple to use JQTouch and Google Data API (via JSONP), so I was able to show the albums and thumbnails in 3 hours, however I want that data to be cached, and for that I'm going to use the HTML 5 Application Cache (via xxx.manifest file). Now the question is what hosts shall I write there in order to cache pictures hosted on picasa. So far I've seen something like lh6.google.com or lh4.ggpht.com does anybody knows the full list of servers?

    My checkbox column doesn't respond when ticked, apparently it was set to read only, so changing state back to false again will make it possible to tick. However, that will turn the whole edit mode to true. I tried to set edit mode to programatically while setting ReadOnly mode to false, but that will disable the checkbox back again. How can I disable edit mode on all cells except checkbox column?

  • Memcached - how to deal with adding/deploying servers

    Hi everybody, How do you handle replacing/adding/removing memcached nodes in your production applications? I will have a number of applications that are cloned and customized due to each customers need running on one and same webserver, so i'll guess that there will be a day when some of the nodes will be changed. Here's how memcached is populated by normal: $m = new Memcached(); $servers = array( array('mem1.domain.com', 11211, 33), array('mem2.domain.com', 11211, 67) ); $m->addServers($servers); My initial idea, is to make the $servers array to be populated from the database, also cached, but file-based, done once a day or something, with the option to force an update on next run of the function that holds the $addservers call. However, I am guessing that this might add some additional overhead since disks are quite slow storage... What do you think?
