• No GUI after upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 (boots to command line)

  I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 (network upgrade using the update manager, from 9.04 which had different graphics related problems) and when I try to boot into it all I get a small Ubuntu logo, flickering text and then the tty1 command line with a logon prompt. startx gives following error: Fatal server error: no screens found I traced down a tutorial that said I needed the latest graphics drivers (Gigabyte ATI Radeon 4650 HD installed with 9.10 catalyst drivers) so I did using the 'sh' command and a USB stick (I have a working Windows partition) and it installed fine but did not fix the problem. Edit: Thanks to UK and Arjan van Bentem below I was able to understand the full error message of start x: Parse error on lone 2 of /etc/X11/xorg.conf 'nameserver' is not a valid keyword in this section Fatal server error: no screens found This has nothing to do with a graphical error (sorry if I misled anyone) but the xorg.conf file has 3 lines in it and lines 2-3 have an entry 'nameserver'. Using the nano command I commented out (using a # before the entries) the nameservers and can now boot Ubuntu. Thanks to everyone for their help.

• X-FI optical output not being recognized.

  Hello there! I have an issue and I don't know what to do! I have a SoundBlaster X-FI Xtreme Gamer, which has a spdif mini-optical output. I have it connected to a home theater, via a toslink cable and an adapter to fit in the mini plug. It used to work perfectly, but now it doesn't anymore. There is light travelling through the cable, but the HT doesn't pick up the signal. The sound card of the motherboard also has an optical output (regular, not mini) and it works ok, so the cable and the HT are fine, I think. What else should I try? Thanks, Luciano. PS: I only enabled the onboard card for testing, but usually it's disabled to avoid any kind of conflicts. PPS: I'm using Windows 7 64bit with latest drivers of everything, but like I said. It used to work.

• Virtual Machines: What components should I upgrade to improve running virtual machines?

  at work I need to have one or sometimes two instances of a vmware virtual Windows 7 machine running on my real Windows 7 machine. The computer I'm using is Dell Precision 490 from 2009 I believe, possibly earlier. Running Windows 7 ultimate. Problems while running VM's: The entire computer slows down when a vmware instance is running. Pages take a while to react to a scroll, applications take forever to launch, and programs hang both in the virtual machines and on the real one. So, what components should I upgrade to improve this? I guess a more pointed question would be, which components will help the most? Possible options: Getting 8gb of RAM instead of 4gb new graphics card new processors? (Is that really an option?) My intuition tells me it will be a combination of the RAM and graphics card. There is also the possibility that an '09 tower just isn't cut out for vm's and our business should purchase a new tower.

• Invalid BOOT.INI (dual boot XP with 7)

  I had Windows XP x64 as my main system, and i also had a second partition with Windows XP x64. Both booted from first partition (C:) I then installed Windows 7 Ultimate on the first partition. I've added NTLDR using BCDRDIT. I've also copied NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI onto the drive where XP remained. However then i try to boot into Windows XP x64 i get Invalid BOOT.INI file Booting from c:\windows\ NTDETECT failed I found instructions on how to fix it using a boot disk, however the partitions are on a software RAID. I've tried to boot from a customized XP CD with the drivers, however it does not offer me a Repair option for some reason - just setup. • Windows XP dual screen problems, user account related

  I have had this issue with a few laptops now and it looks like it is some sort of user account problem. Specifics of the system are: Dell Laptop Windows XP Pro SP3 Non-domain member computer DLP Projector connected to laptop via VGA I use this setup almost daily to do presentations, always the mirrored display mode where I can see on the laptop monitor the same thing that is displayed on the projector. Today, when I boot up, I get the mirrored display at the login screen, but after I log in, it switches to Extended Desktop (like two desktops side-by-side). Fn+F8 just cycles through all the normal settings except the mirrored display. I created a new user account on the computer and it performs normally. Mirrored display works as normal. I have run into this about 4 times now and it always can be solved by creating a new user account on the computer, and then all is well. I would like to either: 1. Find a way to reset the customized settings for a specific user account which would hopefully make this go away, or 2. Find the specific setting that causes this so that I can easily fix it when the problem comes up. Creating new user accounts is kind of a pain and a easy fix must be out there somewhere.

• Using a sky card in Media Center

  I'm not 100% is this SU suitable but oh well. I'm wondering if it's possible to get a slot of some kind to put my Sky Card into a Media Center PC and then be able to have a triple or dual tuner, and connect to the satelitte dish, allowing me to record 3 and watch a previously recorded. Also it would mean access to Youtube and things easily, with only one box. Also would this be legal or is it similar to Apple where you can only use Mac OSX on boxes with the Apple Logo on?

  Is it possible to set up a PC so it can Wake on Lan and then have the option of which OS to boot into? I want to have a secondary PC with Windows and a *nix variant installed. I want the PC to be in a remote room so I can connect via a wireless hub to it and then boot it up as and when required and choose which OS to boot into. If it is possible how would I go about it? • graphics performance better on battery?

  Anyone have any idea why my laptop would perform (considerably) better while on battery than while plugged in? It's a Dell Latitude E6420 with Windows 8 Pro. I tried mirroring all the settings in the selected power plan from "On battery" to "Plugged In" and that didn't help. I then just restored the defaults for all power plans (balanced and high performance). I'm still seeing the same results. The best example where it is most noticeable (don't laugh) is Sim City Social in Chrome. I'm probably seeing a performance increase of 5x on battery versus plugged in. This is easily reproducible too. I'm very confused. Could it be caused by dust? The laptop isn't that old and there is no visible dust. I'm not going to take it apart to check the insides as it's a corporate laptop. Could it be overheating?   I saw some answers to this question however they were fairly old (at least 2 years) and primarily for Vista or previous Windows OS versions. My question is this: Is there a program that allows a single Windows 7 computer to have multiple users (2 needed) and allow for two mice and two keyboards on two screens. What I'm trying to achieve: I'd like for the ability to play a game on one monitor while another person surfs the web, uses a program, or possibly play a different game. Any ideas?

• XPP-32 over W7-64 on music production laptop

  I need to upgrade my laptop and need high performance for music production (recording and mixing). My audio interface manufacturer seems to be unable to successfully convert their drivers to 64-bit. I do not trust a virtual machine to handle real-time audio recording at low enough latency so ... I would like to install XP Pro 32-bit on a separate partition and dual boot since most of the machines that can handle this application now ship with Windows 7 64-bit flavors. I'd like to transit to 64-bit over time assuming M-Audio does eventually get a handle on 64-bit drivers, but really need to ensure that I can stay at 32-bit for now. Does anyone have any experience with this or something similar?

• Ubuntu 9.10 x86_32 with PAE causes graphics issues, mainly slowness

  I've tried the 64bit version and found I was constantly hitting a brick wall trying to get 32bit stuff to run; I'd previously used PAE on 9.04 without any issues so figured I'd give it a shot. However, on 9.10 it seems PAE or the process of enabling PAE breaks the nvidia drivers/module somewhat as performance is terrible; I can't even enable desktop effects and there's lots of artifacting on random controls. Disabling the pae image and rebooting fixes the issue however I'm then stuck with "only" 2.7Gb of ram and unable to use the full 8gb that's installed. Is there somthing special I need to do when using pae and nVidia drivers or should I be using 64bit and just figure out how to force run 32bit packages? :-p

• iDeneb OS X Issues

  This afternoon I installed OS X Leopard on my computer through iDeneb. It mostly worked, but I have a few issues. Firstly, it doesn't seem like it's detecting my graphics card properly. I have a Nvidia 8800GT 512mb installed. As you can see in the screenshot below, it's not detecting it and limiting me to a resolution of 1024x768 (which is a pain in the arse to use) Secondly, I don't have any sound. It's not a massive issue like the graphics issue above, but I'd still like to get it rectified. Thirdly, (this is a very small one) my numlock light doesn't seem to be functioning. I don't really care as the numpad still works, but it would be nice to have the numlock light working. Can anyone lend a hand with any of those problems? Thanks. (bump for great justice)

  Hi, Folks! I'm using a SonicWall NSA 240 which has two WAN ports (T1 and Comcast) and the LAN port has a cable which connects to a switch. From the switch, several cables connect to other switches. The SonicWall doesn't have DHCP enabled; one of our domain controllers running Windows Server 2003 also functions as a DHCP server. Is there a way for a user in our network to change connection from T1 to Comcast as their ISP or vice versa?   I'm thinking about encrypting my whole harddrive for example using TrueCrypt, which I've used for encrypting file containers for a while. It is possible to encrypt the whole harddisk through the program and then add a password secured bootloader before the actual bootloader. Is it possible to do this on a dualboot system with Windows 7 and Fedora 15 currently using Grub as the main bootloader? If so, is it possible to reinstall a system later or will that ruin the whole setup? Thanks

• Sony Bravia KDL-32L5000 PC resolution slightly off.

  Hi, I have a PC running two Nvidia 8500 GTs in SLI mode and I am trying to use my TV in dual mode. When I switch the TV to PC the screen is nearly centered with a slight offset. All resolutions are effected from 800x600 all the way up to the TVs native 1360x768. I have tried with SLI on and off and have PhysX turned off as well as I thought that might have an effect. I am running Windows XP 64-bit SP2 DirectX ver 9.0c Nvidia driver version 181.22 Any other information please let me know. Thanks in advance.

  Is it possible to reconfigure one of the LAN ports on a WRT54GL (running Tomato firmware) to act as a second WAN port? I have the following networks: PPOE connection to ADSL modem (works fine on the normal WAN port) WiFi neighbourhood network (in 178.X.X.X range), via a Mikrotik routerboard which I'd like to put on the WAN side of the router. I'd then like to set up routing so than some traffic (172.X.X.X) is routed to the Mikrotik and the rest to the ADSL modem. p.s. for practical reasons, I can't use the Mikrotik as the firewall/router. Edit: It seems this can be done by editing iptables, can someone tell me exactly how?

• 5GHz vs 2.4GHz dual band router, max mbps

  I've done a fair amount of reading before posting this but there are a few things still unclear. I just bought a Netgear WNDR3700 N600. I understand that 5GHz offers more channels, less interference because of more available channels, wont interfere with a microwave and so on, and also has a shorter range. Currently, my router is broadcasting both signals (for my iPhone on 2.4, and my computer on 5) But my question is What is the max speed of 5GHz in mbps? In the router settings, it allows me to set '300mbps', but I keep reading online that the max is 54. Is this true? I noticed when I set up the router the default for 2.4 was set to 300 and the default for 5 was set to 54, so I changed both to 300. Is this fine as well? I don't see why it wouldn't be maxed out for both by default. On the box it says max rate of 300+300 so I assume this is correct, but it's throttled down so the router isn't stressing in case you have something streaming media 24/7 and slowing the internet down too. What is the max range of 5GHz? my apt is 780 square feet, and the router is in the main living room.

While editing videos the program moves normally but the playback is slow. When I press play the sound is normal but the picture is really slow and choppy. When the sound ends the picture continues to play and it speeds up. I updated the video card today, restarting the PC but get the same behaviour. Does anyone have any suggestions what I can do to get video working smoothly while editing?

  I have the following: Netgear GS724T (Firmware Version V1.0.3_35, Protocol Version - 2.001.002) 4 x Indineon ISFP GBR/FC Settings STP Function - Enabled Fast Link - Enabled Trunking port 23,24, (21,22 - RJ45 cables, but not connected.) I have connected both switches via 2 fiber cables and want to use trunking. The problem I am having. Sometimes I get a an issue when none of the switches cannot talk with each other, nor the devices, sometime they can. The problem is irregular and no patten can be determined The statistics shows that when the switches does not work, they have RX errors If I remove one to the GBIC connections, then everything works as normal.] Question Does anyone have a solution for this please?
