• Maximum filename length shorter in search windows than same file in original folder

  Why can a mp3 file-name be 165 characters long in its original folder, but when searching that folder, the search results window only allows editing of the first 130 characters of that same mp3 filename? This did not happen in XP! The problem occurs with both local and external drives. The act of searching doesn't somehow add to the file-name's path does it? I need to edit filenames in the search window (as I did with XP successfully) but now the search window results suddenly cannot be edited.

• Access Windows VPN DNS from Ubuntu

  I am using Ubuntu 10.04 to access a Windows VPN. I connect to the VPN from Ubuntu, and when I open a Windows 7 virtual machine (VirtualBox), everything works great ... I can access local network drives, ping local servers, remote into local machines, etc. However, I can do none of this from Ubuntu. With the VPN connected, I cannot even ping anything within the VPN local network. I'm guessing it's a DNS issue that Windows is handling automatically but Ubuntu needs a setting somewhere to tell it to use the DNS servers of the VPN network? Any ideas? I'm a relative novice to Ubuntu, esp. VPN in Ubuntu. [EDIT] Actually, I'm almost positive it is DNS, because if I get the IP address from the Windows VM I can use Terminal Server Client to remote into a machine.

• Dead USB flash drive

  So a friend has come to me with a problem. They have a dead USB thumb drive which no longer responds when plugged into a machine. I've tried it in a Mac and it doesn't even respond, at least on a Windows XP machine it sees that it is there but can't show it in explorer, just that whatever is plugged in has malfunctioned. There is obviously current because the activity light on the drive illuminates. I'm looking for suggestions, please. I have access to Mac or Windows hardware and am happy to experiment (and even to pay if the solution works!) It's a bit late to recommend regular backups, but in the lack of that, what's the next best forensic advice? Edit: I should stress that, if possible, we're trying to rescue the data, after all, thumb drives are basically disposable and hardly worth the bother if there's no emotional or functional reason for wanting to rescue it!

  I'd like to know what's with all those unnamed drives. I've always thought they are what they say they are (recoveries and what not), why are there so many of them? and why do they all say 100% Free (i.e. they're all empty!). If that's the case, what happened to my recovery? Info: I'm on Dell Inspiron 7520 Windows 8 Single Language (Had Kali installed on SSD a couple of days ago, now I've just deleted that and will install Kali on VM on SSD, that's drive (S:). • recommendations for disk -> usb backup software

  Recently I lost a tape drive and rather than repair the unit I decided that backups to usb external drives would be cheaper. In the past I used NTBackup and figured that the new server 2008 R2 backup wbadmin utility would be able to meet my needs. It does not. I am looking for recommendations for another utility that i can use. My requirements are: -backup local disk in addition to files on a network share -scheduled task integration (or some gui options to manage schedule) -non-incremental backup Basically I could do this all with WBAdmin if it just supported network shares. I saw some links that described attaching a vhd pointed to a network share but I am trying to avoid hacks like that. If i'm going to do all that trouble I'd just as well manually copy the directories over myself. If anyone has any software suggestions that might make this task easier for me let me know please. I am considering BackupAssist but can only find a few reviews here and there for it.

• Most efficient hard drive configuration for multitasking system

  I hope I didn’t screw up the tile. Currently I’m using for my system 2x500g Raid0 system. I’m thinking about an upgrade but I got hold up by few questions. I need at least 100-120 gb for my system and apps and looking for a technological upgrade also. I've end up with 3 choices. Single 120 ssd (sata 6 drive) 2x60 ssd drives, but I've heard it's not possible. PCI ssd drive (~120gb). They all have very similar read/write values and prices but I was wondering if anyone could give some tips on which way to go. I run win7x64 and do a lot of multitasking(especially adobe stuff).

• Internal SATA hard disk shows up as removable device on Windows 7

  I am running Windows 7 on an Acer Aspire M7720 with three internal SATA drives; drive #2 and #3 are on a removable HDD rack. Drive #3 (on the second removable HDD rack) shows up as removable device in the system tray. If I take drive #3 and put it in the first rack, it shows up as an internal drive. If I put any other drive in the second removable rack, that drive is also shown as removable device. I would like to fix that so that the drive in the second removable rack also is listed as internal drive. Since this seems to be independent of the actual drive in the rack, I checked the BIOS, but that third SATA port uses the same configuration as the second rack. So far, I could not find a solution for this problem (it's really more an annoyance than a problem), any ideas are welcome.

• I lost /dev/md2 on my server

  Hi, My 2 hard drives fried at the same moment apparently. My host company rebooted my server in rescue mode and I am trying to recover my data. They told me to mount /dev/sda2 to recover the data I need but, looking at a similar server that I have in pool, the data I'm looking for should be instead in /dev/md2. I can find /dev/md0 but not /dev/md2 (nor /dev/md1). I've looked on several places on the web and I could only find messages explaining how to create new partition. I just need to recover some data, not all of it and I'll be glad if anyone could help me to mount the /dev/md2 folder (or any other trick that would allow me to recover the data that was stored there).   Can someone help me out on this? I accidentally installed grub on usb flash drive during ubuntu server installation. Now I cant boot system without drive attached to server. • Turning a running Linux system into a KVM instance on another machine

  I have two physical machines that I wish to virtualize. I can not (physically) plug the hard drives from either machine into the new machine that will act as their VM host, so I think that copying the entire structure of the system over using dd is out of the question. How can I best go about migrating these machines from their hardware to the KVM environment? I've set up empty, unformatted LVM logical volumes to host their filesystems, with the understanding that giving the VMs a real partition to work with achieves higher performance than sticking an image on the filesystem. Would I be better off creating new OS installs and rsyncing the differences over? FWIW, the two machines to be VM'd are running CentOS 5, and the host machine is running Ubuntu Server 10.04 for no particularly important reason. I doubt this matters too much, as it's still going to be KVM and libvert that matter.

  I have a dual boot box (Ubuntu 9 and Vista) and I'm about to upgrade Vista to Win 7. Being Ubuntu my main development environment, I'd like to use it as it is from the new environment via VirtualBox or VMWare. I know tools like clonezilla that backup entire drives; in my case, the linux partitions are distributed between several disks which in turn contain both linux and windows data. My intention is to use some backup tool (like Clonezilla if it fits) that allows me to ONLY backup the linux partitions distributed in several disks. Any hints ? Thanks in advance.

• VPC on Windows 7 very slow network

  I have a Windows 2003 virtual machine which I use for website testing. I've just installed Windows 7 and am using the new version VPC (not xp mode). When I try to copy a file - I need to copy some big databases across - I get a file copy speed of about 20k per sec. Copying from one PC to another on the real network transfers files at 13mb per second. Any ideas what may be causing this? I've turned off differential network compression on win 7. The Virtual HD is on a seperate physical drive to the OS. Running Windows 7 64 bit on a dual xeon with 16gb ram and 10,000 rpm drives. Tried installing VPC 2007 but windows blocks it running saying its not compatable. Many thanks for any ideas.

  I am trying to semi-securely erase a bunch of hard drives. The following is working at 20-50Mb/s dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda But dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sda seems not to work. Also when I type dd if=/dev/random of=stdout It only gives me a few bytes regardless of what I pass it for bs= and count= Am I using /dev/random wrong? What other info should I look for to move this troubleshooting forward? Is there some other way to do this with a script or something like makeMyLifeEasy | dd if=stdin of=/dev/sda Or something like that...

• windows 7 partition disappeared

  I have a VPCF2 with windows 7 installed on it. I was working on my computer when on of my drives (D) disappeared. I can see it in Computer Management>Disk Management and it'd marked as Healthy(Primary Partition). When I right click on it the only options that are enabled are Delete Volume and Help. So I cannot assign a drive letter to it (not even in safe mode). I tried System Restore and it failed. I tried to boot the system using ubuntu tha was installed on my system but that fails too because it was installed on partition D. I'm hopeless. What can I do?

I currently have screens, kb, mouse etc... in both locations, so I just pick up my tower case when I want to move to the other location. However to make moving easier I was thinking of buying 2 tower cases with hot swappable drive bays on the front and installing identical hardware in each one. This would allow me to pull the drives out and just take them with me and plug them into the PC at the other location. Would windows 7 complain? I'm not fussed about buying licenses for both PCs, but would I have any problems with drivers due to the different serial numbers of the components?

  I am a web developer. I have not much experience in hardware. For this reason, I use managed servers. This morning, one of the drives in our setup failed. However, the full site went down. I asked my web host what happened and he replied that the hard disk failed in such a way that the RAID controller couldn't work properly. Do you guys ever seen that before? Is it possible? • Best ways to move a server room and 80 desktops to a new building

  Need to plan the best way to physically move a server room (12 IBM x3400 towers) and all associated networking equipment to a new building. Everything is going, comms (80 strong call centre operation), desktops(80-90) the whole lot and has to be done efficiently over a weekend. What I cant seem to find are the best ways to move equipment, i.e is it best to remove hard drives and pack them separetely, do I pack the chassis' with foam and/or surround them in bubble wrap? Are there specific products designed to move computer equipment and where would I find these. The internet has failed me so far, please help

  Essentially, lock manager stops responding (lockd/nfslock), but shows as running as a kernel process. If I bounce portmap and nfslock, it has no effect. Doesn't show up in the portmapper registered services rpcinfo -p .. doesn't show nlockmgr. it just shows portmapper and status If I manually remount the drives, it fixes the issue. I'm assuming that the service (lockd) goes stale or hangs when there is no NFS activity? It seems like issuing a mount for NFS volumes "awakens" it and things work once that happens. Please help me nail this down for point me to somewhere to get more information on what might be happening. • High system cpu load (%sys), system locks

  For the last two weeks we are having intermittent severe spikes in system cpu usage (shown as %sys), which last for maybe half a minute, locking most processes, including ssh. I've been trying to figure this out, but atop doesn't show anything relevant (system usage for processes it shows is insignificant), spikes are intermittent and I could not reproduce the spike using any workload for the web application this webserver hosts. If you have any ideas on how to debug high %sys and (sometimes) %si CPU usage, please share them. System specs (don't know if any of this is relevant): Dedicated server, CentOS 6, core i7 950, consistent 4 to 8 GB RAM free at any time, hard drives are in RAID-1. Additional info: dmesg output doesn't change between spikes /var/log/messages doesn't change between spikes Here is cat /proc/vmstat Here is output of mpstat 1 during a typical spike Add 07.11.11: looks like simple reboot restored system state, and we might never know what caused the disturbance in first place.

• Windows 7 Mapped Network Drive Multiplying to Create Duplicates all the way to Z:

  A strange issue came in today from some users. At least two Windows 7 x64 boxes that have duplicate mappings of a network drive. The drive is not mapped with a log in script, but done manual through "Map Network Drive". Everything has been fine for months, but all of the sudden, Explorer looks like this: Files (\\fileServerPath) (S:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (T:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (U:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (V:) Files (\\otherServerPath) (W:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (X:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (Y:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (Z:) There are some other networks drives mixed in there that did not duplicate. The drive is normally mapped to S:\, but it decided to make its way to Z:. What is going on here? • Windows 7 network share issues w/XP & SBS 2K3

  Hi, my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit computer has issues when accessing SBS 2K3 or XP shares. 1) It will not automagically reconnect upon boot. I have a batch file that will do this that utilizes net use (yes I have /persist:yes, but it does not help) to re-map them. 2) After trying to use it for a few minutes, it will not work. Any attempt to access the drive letter that was mapped causes windows Explorer, or other apps. to lock up. These shares work fine from XP & Vista computers. When this happens the internet works fine, just the mapped drives do not work correctly.

• random hard disk errors

  For the past 2 years or so (4 year old custom build) I've been getting random moments where everything stops responding (or takes a very long time to respond) followed by I/O and hdd not detected errors on restart. To fix it, all I usually need to do is unplug my SATA cables from the hdd and mobo and plug them back in again and the problem disappears, at least for a little while (it ranges anywhere from a day to a few months time). Sometimes even a startup repair does the job. I've done multiple reformats and have also ran chkdsk more times than I can remember and both do not seem to help in the long run. Both the drives seem to be exhibiting the same problem. Have both my hdds been "dying" for the past couple of years, even though they are fully functional besides these occasional hiccups? Does the issue lie elsewhere? All feedback is appreciated. System specs: Biostar Tpower i45 mobo 2x WD Caviar 640GB hdds Zalman 750w psu Radeon 5870 gpu 2x2gb Gskill DDR2 ram Win7 64

• Merge Two Folders To Act As One (Software Raid 0?)

  Using Windows 7, I'm trying to setup what I've come to call a "Software Raid of Folders", not completely sure it's the right term, but I'm sure anyone who knows the true term will understand what I'm getting at. I have two folders, on two seperate harddrive, I would like to "merge" these folders while keeping them on seperate harddrive so they act as one folder. Example: Music and Videos are to be merged together to a new folder called "Merged" Music runs off of Harddrive 1 Videos runs off of Harddrive 2 Anything new saved inside Merged is saved within Videos that runs off of Harddrive 2 Now you see how I came up with the term "Software Raid", it's like an average RAID 0 setup, but instead I want to do it with just two specific folders on two different drives within Windows. Any help on this is apprecieated!
