  • Angle between two 2d vectors, diff between two methods?

    - by Sean Ochoa
    Hey all. I've got this code snippet, and I'm wondering why the results of the first method differ from the results of the second method, given the same input? public double AngleBetween_1(vector a, vector b) { var dotProd = a.Dot(b); var lenProd = a.Len*b.Len; var divOperation = dotProd/lenProd; return Math.Acos(divOperation) * (180.0 / Math.PI); } public double AngleBetween_2(vector a, vector b) { var dotProd = a.Dot(b); var lenProd = a.Len*b.Len; var divOperation = dotProd/lenProd; return (1/Math.Cos(divOperation)) * (180.0 / Math.PI); }

  • PHP OOP Concepts (Value Objects / Data Access Objects)

    - by Iuhiz
    Hi, I've just started to learn PHP OOP, previously I have been doing PHP in a procedural manner. I was reading this article and I've got a couple of quick questions, How is the constructor for value objects commonly defined? As one that takes in all "data members" as parameters or stick to the default constructor and use mutator / accessor methods to set / get data members? Is this actually the recommended way to start doing PHP OOP? Cos honestly, the concepts explained in the article was a tad confusing for me. Cheers

  • Java :moving ball with angle ?

    - by Meko
    Hi all.I am started to learn game physics and I am trying to move ball with an angle.But it does not change its angle .Java coordinate sydstem is a little different and i think my problem is there.Here my codes this is for calculating x and y speed scale_X= Math.sin(angle); scale_Y=Math.cos(angle); velosity_X=(speed*scale_X); velosity_Y=(speed*scale_Y); This is for moving ball in run() function ball.posX =ball.posX+(int)velosity_X; ball.posY=ball.posY+(int)velosity_Y; I used (int)velosity_X and (int)velosity_Y because in ball class I draw object g.drawOval(posX, posX, width, height); and here g.drawOval requares int.I dont know is it problem or not. Also if I use angle 30 it goes +X and +Y but if I use angle 35 it goes -X and -Y. I didnot figure out how work coordinate system on java.

  • How do I make matlab legends match the colour of the graphs?

    - by Alex Gosselin
    Here is the code I used: x = linspace(0,2); e = exp(1); lin = e; quad = e-e.*x.*x/2; cub = e-e.*x.*x/2; quart = e-e.*x.*x/2+e.*x.*x.*x.*x/24; act = e.^cos(x); mplot = plot(x,act,x,lin,x,quad,x,cub,x,quart); legend('actual','linear','quadratic','cubic','quartic') This produces a legend matching the right colors to actual and linear, then after that it seems to skip over red on the graph, but not on the legend, i.e. the legend says quadratic should be red, but the graph shows it as green, the legend says cubic should be green, but the graph shows it as purple etc. Any help is appreciated.

  • Where is the virtual function call overhead?

    - by Semen Semenych
    Hello everybody, I'm trying to benchmark the difference between a function pointer call and a virtual function call. To do this, I have written two pieces of code, that do the same mathematical computation over an array. One variant uses an array of pointers to functions and calls those in a loop. The other variant uses an array of pointers to a base class and calls its virtual function, which is overloaded in the derived classes to do absolutely the same thing as the functions in the first variant. Then I print the time elapsed and use a simple shell script to run the benchmark many times and compute the average run time. Here is the code: #include <iostream> #include <cstdlib> #include <ctime> #include <cmath> using namespace std; long long timespecDiff(struct timespec *timeA_p, struct timespec *timeB_p) { return ((timeA_p->tv_sec * 1000000000) + timeA_p->tv_nsec) - ((timeB_p->tv_sec * 1000000000) + timeB_p->tv_nsec); } void function_not( double *d ) { *d = sin(*d); } void function_and( double *d ) { *d = cos(*d); } void function_or( double *d ) { *d = tan(*d); } void function_xor( double *d ) { *d = sqrt(*d); } void ( * const function_table[4] )( double* ) = { &function_not, &function_and, &function_or, &function_xor }; int main(void) { srand(time(0)); void ( * index_array[100000] )( double * ); double array[100000]; for ( long int i = 0; i < 100000; ++i ) { index_array[i] = function_table[ rand() % 4 ]; array[i] = ( double )( rand() / 1000 ); } struct timespec start, end; clock_gettime(CLOCK_PROCESS_CPUTIME_ID, &start); for ( long int i = 0; i < 100000; ++i ) { index_array[i]( &array[i] ); } clock_gettime(CLOCK_PROCESS_CPUTIME_ID, &end); unsigned long long time_elapsed = timespecDiff(&end, &start); cout << time_elapsed / 1000000000.0 << endl; } and here is the virtual function variant: #include <iostream> #include <cstdlib> #include <ctime> #include <cmath> using namespace std; long long timespecDiff(struct timespec *timeA_p, struct timespec *timeB_p) { return ((timeA_p->tv_sec * 1000000000) + timeA_p->tv_nsec) - ((timeB_p->tv_sec * 1000000000) + timeB_p->tv_nsec); } class A { public: virtual void calculate( double *i ) = 0; }; class A1 : public A { public: void calculate( double *i ) { *i = sin(*i); } }; class A2 : public A { public: void calculate( double *i ) { *i = cos(*i); } }; class A3 : public A { public: void calculate( double *i ) { *i = tan(*i); } }; class A4 : public A { public: void calculate( double *i ) { *i = sqrt(*i); } }; int main(void) { srand(time(0)); A *base[100000]; double array[100000]; for ( long int i = 0; i < 100000; ++i ) { array[i] = ( double )( rand() / 1000 ); switch ( rand() % 4 ) { case 0: base[i] = new A1(); break; case 1: base[i] = new A2(); break; case 2: base[i] = new A3(); break; case 3: base[i] = new A4(); break; } } struct timespec start, end; clock_gettime(CLOCK_PROCESS_CPUTIME_ID, &start); for ( int i = 0; i < 100000; ++i ) { base[i]->calculate( &array[i] ); } clock_gettime(CLOCK_PROCESS_CPUTIME_ID, &end); unsigned long long time_elapsed = timespecDiff(&end, &start); cout << time_elapsed / 1000000000.0 << endl; } My system is LInux, Fedora 13, gcc 4.4.2. The code is compiled it with g++ -O3. The first one is test1, the second is test2. Now I see this in console: [Ignat@localhost circuit_testing]$ ./test2 && ./test2 0.0153142 0.0153166 Well, more or less, I think. And then, this: [Ignat@localhost circuit_testing]$ ./test2 && ./test2 0.01531 0.0152476 Where are the 25% which should be visible? How can the first executable be even slower than the second one? I'm asking this because I'm doing a project which involves calling a lot of small functions in a row like this in order to compute the values of an array, and the code I've inherited does a very complex manipulation to avoid the virtual function call overhead. Now where is this famous call overhead?

  • Get XAML from WPF Custom RichTextFormat

    - by Erika
    I've looked at other posts, but i cant seem to find something that works. I have a custom control WPF RichTextBox and would like to obtain the XAML from this control. I have tried the following //rt is the name of this particular custom richtextbox TextRange range = new TextRange(rt.Document.ContentStart, rt.Document.ContentEnd); MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream(); range.Save(stream, DataFormats.Xaml); string xamlText = Encoding.UTF8.GetString(stream.ToArray()); return xamlText; but this doesnt seem to work :s I can access the rt.Document.Content start etc but it seems to crash there "Object Reference not set to instance of an object". I am using the richtextbox directly from the .xaml.cs so it should be initiated and so on :s. Any Ideas or other ways to get the XAML from a richtextbox pls? (i'm requiring the XAML cos i actually want to get the HTML.. if theres some other direct manner perhaps?)

  • Implement Camera on Android Emulator | Need some knowledge

    - by Thisara
    I'm interested in doing some enhancements to android emulator (implement webcam on emulator). Therefore I'm following the android source and emulators source to get basic understanding & the connection between modules. But its really hard to understand it for someone who is new to android. Therefore can anyone please direct me to some resource to understand this. May be some proper documentation, tutorials or anything that i can understand this. And since i'm interested in emulator if i change the code of emulator with in "external\qemu" , then build it using "m emulator" and run using "emulator" , will those changes effect or apply onto the started emulator. And if anyone know please let me know that, what is the sdk it uses when it run as "emulator" from the build android source code. Cos if i want to install some application to that emulator how can i do that? Please help if anyone know...

  • How to draw a full ellipse in a StreamGeometry in WPF?

    - by romkyns
    The only method in a StreamGeometryContext that seems related to ellipses is the ArcTo method. Unfortunately it is heavily geared to joining lines rather than drawing ellipses. In particular, the position of the arc is determined by a starting and ending point. For a full ellipse the two coincide obviously, and the exact orientation becomes undefined. So far the best way of drawing an ellipse centered on 100,100 of size 10,10 that I found is like this: using (var ctx = geometry.Open()) { ctx.BeginFigure(new Point(100+5, 100), isFilled: true, isClosed: true); ctx.ArcTo( new Point(100 + 5*Math.Cos(0.01), 100 + 5*Math.Sin(0.01)), // need a small angle but large enough that the ellipse is positioned accurately new Size(10/2, 10/2), // docs say it should be 10,10 but in practice it appears that this should be half the desired width/height... 0, true, SweepDirection.Counterclockwise, true, true); } Which is pretty ugly, and also leaves a small "flat" area (although not visible at normal zoom levels). How else might I draw a full ellipse using StreamGeometryContext?

  • Help needed inorder to avoid recursion

    - by Srivatsa
    Hello All I have a method, which gives me the required number of Boxes based on number of devices it can hold.Currently i have implemented this logic using recursion private uint PerformRecursiveDivision(uint m_oTotalDevices,uint m_oDevicesPerBox, ref uint BoxesRequired) { if (m_oTotalDevices< m_oDevicesPerBox) { BoxesRequired = 1; } else if ((m_oTotalDevices- m_oDevicesPerBox>= 0) && (m_oTotalDevices- m_oDevicesPerBox) < m_oDevicesPerBox) { //Terminating condition BoxesRequired++; return BoxesRequired; } else { //Call recursive function BoxesRequired++; return PerformRecursiveDivision((m_oTotalDevices- m_oDevicesPerBox), m_oDevicesPerBox, ref BoxesRequired); } return BoxesRequired; } Is there any better method to implement the same logic without using recursion. Cos this method is making my application very slow for cases when number of devices exceeds 50000. Thanks in advance for your support Constant learner

  • Optimizing a 3D World Javascript Animation

    - by johnny
    Hi! I've recently come up with the idea to create a tag cloud like animation shaped like the earth. I've extracted the coastline coordinates from ngdc.noaa.gov and wrote a little script that displayed it in my browser. Now as you can imagine, the whole coastline consists of about 48919 points, which my script would individually render (each coordinate being represented by one span). Obviously no browser is capable of rendering this fluently - but it would be nice if I could render as much as let's say 200 spans (twice as much as now) on my old p4 2.8 Ghz (as a representative benchmark). Are there any javascript optimizations I could use in order to speed up the display of those spans? One 'coordinate': <div id="world_pixels"> <span id="wp_0" style="position:fixed; top:0px; left:0px; z-index:1; font-size:20px; cursor:pointer;cursor:hand;" onmouseover="magnify_world_pixel('wp_0');" onmouseout="shrink_world_pixel('wp_0');" onClick="set_askcue_bar('', 'new york')">new york</span> </div> The script: $(document).ready(function(){ world_pixels = $("#world_pixels span"); world_pixels.spin(); setInterval("world_pixels.spin()",1500); }); z = new Array(); $.fn.spin = function () { for(i=0; i<this.length; i++) { /*actual screen coordinates: x/y/z --> left/font-size/top 300/13/0 300/6/300 | / |/ 0/13/300 ----|---- 600/13/300 /| / | 300/20/300 300/13/600 */ /*scale font size*/ var resize_x = 1; /*scale width*/ var resize_y = 2.5; /*scale height*/ var resize_z = 2.5; var from_left = 300; var from_top = 20; /*actual math coordinates: 1 -1 | / |/ 1 ----|---- -1 /| / | 1 -1 */ //var get_element = document.getElementById(); //var font_size = parseInt(this.style.fontSize); var font_size = parseInt($(this[i]).css("font-size")); var left = parseInt($(this[i]).css("left")); if (coast_line_array[i][1]) { } else { var top = parseInt($(this[i]).css("top")); z[i] = from_top + (top - (300 * resize_z)) / (300 * resize_z); //global beacause it's used in other functions later on var top_new = from_top + Math.round(Math.cos(coast_line_array[i][2]/90*Math.PI) * (300 * resize_z) + (300 * resize_z)); $(this[i]).css("top", top_new); coast_line_array[i][3] = 1; } var x = resize_x * (font_size - 13) / 7; var y = from_left + (left- (300 * resize_y)) / (300 * resize_y); if (y >= 0) { this[i].phi = Math.acos(x/(Math.sqrt(x^2 + y^2))); } else { this[i].phi = 2*Math.PI - Math.acos(x/(Math.sqrt(x^2 + y^2))); i } this[i].theta = Math.acos(z[i]/Math.sqrt(x^2 + y^2 + z[i]^2)); var font_size_new = resize_x * Math.round(Math.sin(coast_line_array[i][4]/90*Math.PI) * Math.cos(coast_line_array[i][0]/180*Math.PI) * 7 + 13); var left_new = from_left + Math.round(Math.sin(coast_line_array[i][5]/90*Math.PI) * Math.sin(coast_line_array[i][0]/180*Math.PI) * (300 * resize_y) + (300 * resize_y)); //coast_line_array[i][6] = coast_line_array[i][7]+1; if ((coast_line_array[i][0] + 1) > 180) { coast_line_array[i][0] = -180; } else { coast_line_array[i][0] = coast_line_array[i][0] + 0.25; } $(this[i]).css("font-size", font_size_new); $(this[i]).css("left", left_new); } } resize_x = 1; function magnify_world_pixel(element) { $("#"+element).animate({ fontSize: resize_x*30+"px" }, { duration: 1000 }); } function shrink_world_pixel(element) { $("#"+element).animate({ fontSize: resize_x*6+"px" }, { duration: 1000 }); } I'd appreciate any suggestions to optimize my script, maybe there is even a totally different approach on how to go about this.   • comparing two angles

    - by Elazar Leibovich
    Given four points in the plane, A,B,X,Y, I wish to determine which of the following two angles is smaller ?ABX or ?ABY. I'd rather not use cos or sqrt, in order to preserve accuracy. In the case where A=(-1,0),B=(0,0), I can compare the two angles ?ABX and ?ABY, by calculating the dot product of the vectors X,Y, and watch it's sign. What I can do in this case is: Determine whether or not ABX turns right or left If ABX turns left check whether or not Y and A are on the same side of the line on segment BX. If they are - ?ABX is a smaller than ABY. If ABX turns right, then Y and A on the same side of BX means that ?ABX is larger than ?ABY. But this seems too complicated to me. Any simpler approach?

  • C++ Primer (Stanley Lipmann) or The C++ programming language (special edition)

    - by Kim
    I have a Computer Science degree (long2 time ago) .. I do know Java OOP but i am now trying to pick up C++. I do have C and of course data structure using C or pascal. I have started reading Bjarne Stroustrup book (The C++ Programming Language - Special Edition) but find it extremely difficult esp. some section which i don't have exposure such as Recursive Descent Parser (chapter 6). In terms of the language i don't foresee i have problem but i have problem as mentioned cos' those topic are usually covered in a Master Degree program such as construction of compiler. I just bought a book called C++ primer (Stanley Lipmann) which i heard it is a very good book for C++. Only setback is it's of course no match with the amount of information from the original C++ creator. Please advice. Thanks.

  • DisplayObject.rotation not matching trig functions

    - by futuraprime
    I'm trying to label an animated pie chart, and I've been having a great deal of trouble getting rotated objects to line up with trigonometrically-positioned objects. So, for example, if I have a pie piece that's middle is angle theta and has been rotated n degrees in a tween, and then I try to position a label with code like this: label.x = center.x + Math.cos((theta + n)/180 * Math.PI) * radius; label.y = center.y + Math.sin((theta + n)/180 * Math.PI) * radius; the label is often not aligned with the center of the pie slice. Since I am also zooming in to the pie chart a great deal, the error becomes significant enough that it occasionally causes the label to miss the pie slice altogether. The error seems relatively unpredictable, and it looks a great deal like a rounding error, but I don't see any obvious rounding going on (the trig functions evaluate to ten or so decimal places, which should be more than enough here). How can I get these labels to position correctly?

  • Polygon area calculation using Latitude and Longitude generated from Cartesian space and a world fil

    - by Heath
    Given a series of GPS coordinate pairs, I need to calculate the area of a polygon (n-gon). This is relatively small (not larger than 50,000 sqft). The geocodes are created by applying an affine transform with data from a world file. I have tried to use a two step approach by doing converting the geocodes to cartesian coordinates: double xPos = (lon-lonAnchor)*( Math.toRadians( 6378137 ) )*Math.cos( latAnchor ); double yPos = (lat-latAnchor)*( Math.toRadians( 6378137 ) ); then I use a cross product calculation to determine the area. The issue is that the results are a bit off in accuracy (around 1%). Is there anything I can look into to improve this? Thanks.

  • Matlab: Analysis of signal

Frequency of sampling is 1000Hz For example I have signal like this: Nx=64; fs=1000; t=1/fs*(0:Nx-1); %========================== A1=1; A2=4; f1=500; f2=1000; x1=A1*cos(2*pi*f1*t); x2=A2*sin(2*pi*f2*t); %========================== x=x1+x2;

  • Simulink: Specifying trajectory

    I would like to use jtraj to specify a trajectory in a Simulink model. Below are what I attempted to retrieve in the command prompt: Q0 = [1 1 0]; Q1 = [1+0.5*cos(2*20) 1+0.5*sin(2*20) 0]; t = 0:0.1:20; [Q, Qd, Qdd] = jtraj(Q0, Q1, t); However, I don't know how to include such trajectory data in the Simulink model easily. Any comments? Thanks in advance.

  • Dotnetopenauth oAuth Service provider explanation

    - by ria
    I am a total newbie in the oAuth area and have set up DotNetOpenAuth to set up an oAuth Service provider. The sample provided in the DotNetOpenAuth download is quite confusing for me...maybe cos i am new to this stuff. There is one default page that creates a database and populates the database. Now I browse to the login.aspx and it asks me to put an openid, actually I want to use DNN (which implements DotNetOpenAuth) and i want to use those credentials on another site which will be the oAuth consumer. Can someone explain how to test the oAuth Service provider in the samples of DotNetOpenAuth?

  • Plot hex tiles with different length sides?

    - by Phil
    I'm trying to create a basic grid of hex tiles. I found some code... s=h/Math.cos(30*Math.PI/180)/2; tile._x=x*s*1.5; tile._y=y*h+(x%2)*h/2; That does just that, but I think it's setup for hex's that have same length sides. However my hex has different length sides. It's width is 140 and it's height is 80. I could completely change the code to work with my side lengths, but I was wondering if there's a better way of doing it with the code above.

  • How can I work around the fact that in C++, sin(3.14159265) is not 0?

    - by Adam Doyle
    In C++, const double Pi = 3.14159265; cout << sin(Pi); // displays: 3.58979e-009 it SHOULD display the number zero I understand this is because Pi is being approximated, but is there any way I can have a value of Pi hardcoded into my program that will return 0 for sin(Pi)? (a different constant maybe?) In case you're wondering what I'm trying to do: I'm converting polar to rectangular, and while there are some printf() tricks I can do to print it as "0.00", it still doesn't consistently return decent values (in some cases I get "-0.00") The lines that require sin and cosine are: x = r*sin(theta); y = r*cos(theta); BTW: My Rectangular - Polar is working fine... it's just the Polar - Rectangular Thanks! edit: I'm looking for a workaround so that I can print sin(some multiple of Pi) as a nice round number to the console (ideally without a thousand if-statements)

  • jQuery remove selected option from this

Can someone please explain why this works: $('#some_select_box').click(function() { $('#some_select_box option:selected').remove(); }); but this doesn't: $('#some_select_box').click(function() { $('this option:selected').remove(); }); I just want to use "this" instead of spelling out the id of the select box - can someone point me in the right direction for the correct syntax? It's driving me mad because it looks like it should be really simple. And I'm sure it is to someone, but not me, cos its the end of the day and I'm brain-fried... Any pointers much appreciated. • What is the worst class/variable/function name you have ever encountered

    - by Chris Noe
    Naming things well is arguably Job 1 for professional programmers. Yet we have all suffered from some bad naming choices from time to time. So just to vent a little, what are some doozies that you may have run across? Just to get things started: One of our original developers wasn't sure what to call a secondary key - on what turned out to be a primary table for this app - so he called it: DL2WhateverTheHellThatIs. Unfortunately this system generates entity mappings from the XML, and attributes defined there result in classes, methods, and constants that are referenced through-out the app. To this day it is very hard to find a source file that does not reference this, er, thing! A few actual examples: DL2WhateverTheHellThatIsBean cos = (DL2WhateverTheHellThatIsBean)itr.next(); String code = getDL2WhateverTheHellThatIs().getCode(); From from = new From("DL2WhateverTheHellThatIs"); String filter = "_dL2WhateverTheHellThatIs._code"; (Very difficult to refactor)

  • slowly rotate an object towards another object

    I have an object that points in the direction of another object (i.e. it rotates to the direction that the second objects x and y coordinates are at) below is the code I use. var distx = target.x - x; var disty = target.y - y; var angle:Number = Math.atan2(disty, distx); var vx:Number = Math.cos(angle) * cspeed; var vy:Number = Math.sin(angle) * cspeed; rotation = angle * 180/Math.PI; x += vx; y += vy; as you can see. Not only does it rotate towards the target object, but it also moves towards it too. When I play the movie, the object instantly points to the targeted object and moves towards it. I would like for it to slowly turn towards the object instead of instantly turning towards it. anyone know how to do this.

  • JTextField that has inner fields or preformated format, something like the ip field in windows

    Hello guys, i want to create a text field that will be for date and will have dd.mm.YYYY format. Now what i want to do is the user to type only the numbers, not the dots to. So the field would be like: _ _. _ _ . _ _ _ _ So when the user wants to type the date: 15.05.2010 for example, he will only type the numbers in the sequence 15052010. Also i would like, when he preses on left or right arrow, the cursor to go from one field(not JTextField, but field in the JTextField). So lets say i have JTextField with text in it: 15.05.2010, so if user is on the beginning and he preses right arrow, the cursor to go to the .05 field. I hope you understand me 'cos right now i don't any idea how to make this, or at least how to look for it on google. Thank you.
