• How does Mach-O loader loads different NSString objects?

  I have known that If you define a bunch of @"" NSString objects in the source code in Mac OS. These NSStrings will be stored in a segment in the Mach-O library. Section sectname __ustring segname __TEXT addr 0x000b3b54 size 0x000001b7 offset 731988 align 2^1 (2) reloff 0 nreloc 0 flags 0x00000000 reserved1 0 reserved2 0 If I hex dump the binary, they are aligned closely one by one with a 0x0000as separator. What I want to know is how does the loader in Mac OS X load these NSStrings when the program runs? Are they loaded simpily by recognize the 0x0000 separator or these is a string offset table elsewhere in the binary pointing to separate NSString objects? Thanks. (What I really want to do is the increase the length of one of the NSString, so I have to know how the loader recognize these separate objects)

  I am writing a rake task which, at one point, uses a custom YAML file import method to seed the database. At one point in the import code, I have: ActiveRecord::Base.transaction do Trying to run the rake task throws: You have a nil object when you didn't expect it! You might have expected an instance of ActiveRecord::Base. The error occurred while evaluating nil.[] The stack trace points to the aforementioned line in the code. Is there a way to instantiate ActiveRecord::Base during a rake task? Thanks!

• I can't change a value, for a web service using an axiom client!

  Hi.I just started learning about web serices. I succesfuly installed Tomcat, and deployed axis2 on it. I followed the tutorial from here http://ws.apache.org/axis2/1_1_1/quickstartguide.html . I made the StockQuoteService web service, moved the .aar file in the WEB-INF/services folder and tested it - it worked all fine. Then I made a client for the servce. I took the source code of the file AXIOMClient.java from the dir described here http://ws.apache.org/axis2/1_1_1/quickstartguide.html#clientaxiom , imported the classes in Eclipse Java IDE and runned it. I tested and the update method works from the browser when calling http://localhost:8080/axis2/services/StockQuoteService/update?symbol=WSO&price=144 But from my java client update method is not working at all, when calling getPrice I always receive 42.00. What am I doing wrong? or, how can I trace what is happening?

• Same Activity called twice... Issue with Multiple AsyncTasks?

  I have three simultaneous instances of an AsyncTask for download three files. When two particular ones finish, at the end of onPostExecute() I check a flag set by each, and if both are true, I call startActivity() for the next Activity. I am currently seeing the activity called twice, or something that resembles this type of behavior. Since the screen does that 'swipe left' kind of transition to the next activity, it sometimes does it twice (and when I hit back, it goes back to the same activity). It's obvious two versions of the activity that SHOULD only get called once are being put on the Activity stack. Could this be from both onPostExecute()s executing simultaneously and both checking the flags each other set at the exact same time? This seems extremely unlikely since two processes would have to be running line-by-line in parallel... *EDIT* A lot removed from this question since I was way off in what I thought was wrong. Nonetheless I found the answer here quite useful, so I have edited the question to reflect the useful parts.

• Is there a cap on the number of modules WinDbg can see?

  Does anyone know if there is a cap on the number of DLLs WinDbg can see ? I believe Visual Studio was once capped at 500 but I can't find a source for this claim outside of some second hand accounts at work. I'm trying to debug a hairy scenario and WinDbg's stack trace is incomplete. According to Process Explorer, the module I'm interested in is loaded but it doesn't show up in the output of 'lm' in WinDbg. Suspiciously, said output is exactly 500 modules long, even though I know there are many more than that loaded, leading me to believe WinDbg isn't seeing DLLs beyond the first 500. Can anyone confirm ? Or suggest some other reason why a loaded module might not show up in 'lm' ?

• Weird exception with delayed_job

  Trying to queue a job with delayed_job as follows: Delayed::Job.enqueue(BackgroundProcess.new(current_user, object)) current_user and object are not nil when I print them out. The weird thing is that sometimes refreshing the page or running the command again works!   My website has been giving me intermittent errors when trying to perform any Ajax activities. The message I get is Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException: The message received from the server could not be parsed. Common causes for this error are when the response is modified by calls to Response.Write(), response filters, HttpModules, or server trace is enabled. Details: Error parsing near ' So its obviously some sort of server timeout or the server's just returning back mangled garbage. This generally, unfortunately not always, happens when the site has been idle for a while. Anybody else been able to overcome this? Thanks

SSL objects that are created from ctx inherit the setting valid at the time when SSL_new(3) is called. and: SSL_CTX_set_verify() sets the verification flags for ctx to be mode and specifies the verify_callback function to be used. If no callback function shall be specified, the NULL pointer can be used for verify_callback. So I'm trying to understand which callback to send for each one (from client side). Thanks experts.

• Seam log4j credential logs

  In Seam, using log4, I would like to have my info, warn and error always logging the logged in user (if so) name to be logged with whatever the log message is. Being a consistant thing I do not want to have to grab the logged-in user name, and prefix the message. so I attempted to populate the log4j NDC to have it as a field of the log message. Pushing the user name on successful login: NDC.push(credentials.getUsername()); Which works, but the NDC is managed per thread, so once another thread processes a request from the same logged in user, the trace of this user name is lost. I was thinking that there should be a common pattern to accomplish this simple task which is attaching each log message to the logged user, using the NDC or not, to know exactly what user triggered what action. Anyone knows the appropriate way to accomplish this?

• How can I manage command line arguements/variables for a script written in Perl?

  I am trying to manage numerous arguments that are specified by a user when they execute a command. So far, I have been trying to limit my script design to manage arguments as flags that I can easily manage with Getopt::Long as follows: GetOptions ("a" => \$a, "b" => \$b); In this way I can check to see if a or b were specified and then execute the respective code/functions. However, I now have a case where the user can specify two arguments variables as follows: command -a black -b white This is fine, but I cannot come up with a good way to determine whether -a or -b is specified first. Therefore I do not know whether the argument variable is assigned to $ARGV[0] or $ARGV[1] after I have executed GetOptions ("a" => \$a, "b" => \$b);. How can I tell which variable is associated with -a and which is associated with -b in the example above?

• How can I get the width/height of a loaded swf's stage in AS2?

  I'm using MovieClipLoader to load an external as2 swf file into my as2 flash project, and I'm having trouble getting the original stage size of the loaded swf. My trace output tells me this method is called 18864 times, 16% of the runtime was spent in this method. Can I optimize more?

• Creating Ruby applications for Windows.

Honestly I care little about cross-platforms for now (but still would be good) I want to use Ruby, since it has quite a simple syntax and is so.. well, simple and easy to learn. My application is like a "game level creator", where you can design your own level and then run it with another application which is a "game level player" by reading the project file created by the creator app. You get the idea. Now, I got a new PC and is completely clean. Absolutely no trace of my old Ruby experiments and fails. First of all, I will need to choose a GUI platform for my Ruby application! Can you recommend me one? I have heard of Shoes and Tk, but want to know what you think.

• How can I most accurately calculate the execution time of an ASP.NET page while also displaying it o

  I want to calculate the execution time of my ASP.NET pages and display it on the page. Currently I'm calculating the execution time using a System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch and then store the value in a log database. The stopwatch is started in OnInit and stopped in OnPreRenderComplete. This seems to be working quite fine, and it's giving a similar execution time as the one shown in the page trace. The problem now is that I'm not able to display the execution time on the page because the stopwatch is stopped too late in the life cycle. What is the best way to do this?

• What information do you capture when your software crashes in the field?

  I am working on rewriting my unexpected error handling process, and I would like to ask the community: What information do you capture both automatic, and manually, when software you have written crashes? Right now, I capture a few items, some of which are: Automatic: Name of app that crashed Version of app that crashed Stack trace Operating System version RAM used by the application Number of processors Screen shot: (Only on non-public applications) User name and contact information (from Active Directory) Manual: What context is the user in (i.e.: what company, tech support call number, RA number, etc...) When did the user expect to happen? (Typical response: "Not to crash”) Steps to reproduce. What other bits of information do you capture that helps you discover the true cause of an applications problem, especially given that most users simply mash the keyboard when asked to tell you what happened. For the record I’m using C#, WPF and .NET version 4, but I don’t necessarily want to limit myself to those.   I want to include Microsoft AntiXss V1.5 library on my live site running in a medium trust setting.However, I got an error something like: Required permissions cannot be acquired. • Alternatives to Java bytecode instrumentation

  I'm starting a project that will have to instrument java applications for coverage purposes (definition-usage of variables, etc). It has to add trace statements and some logic to the application and maybe remove statements. I have searched for ways of instrument Java code and what I always find is about bytecode instrumentation. My question is: It's the only way to instrument Java applications? There is any other way to do that? What are the advantages of bytecode instrumentation over the others? I'll probably use the bytecode solution, but I want to know what are the problems with the other approaches (if any) to decide precisely. Thanks!

This works properly, but when I click on the print option, and then click "OK" on the options popup, I get the following error: Access is denied.
