• What good practices, if any, has the agile movement lost?

  I am a long time agile advocated but one of the things that bothers me about Agile is that a lot of agile practitioners, especially the younger ones, have thrown out or are missing a whole lot of good (non Scrum, non XP) practices. Alistair Cockburn's style of writing Use Cases springs to mind; orthogonal arrays (pairwise testing) is another. I hope this is an okay forum to ask this, but since I read mostly Agile related books and articles and work with mostly Agile folk ... is there anything I'm missing? Thanks for all your help. • Stealing the contents of another application's tree view

  I have an application with a very large TreeView control in Java. I want to get the contents of the tree control in a list (just strings not a JList) of XPath-like elements of leaves only. Here's an example root |-Item1 |-Item1.1 |-Item1.1.1 (leaf) |-Item1.2 (leaf) |-Item2 |-Item2.1 (leaf) Would output: /Item1/Item1.1/Item1.1.1 /Item1/Item1.2 /Item2/Item2.1 I don't have any source code or anything handy like that. Is there I tool I can use to dig into the Window item itself and pull out this data? I don't mind if there are a few post-processing steps because typing it in by hand is my only other option.

  So, what I want to do is quite simple in my mind. I have an array that consists solely of four objects. I want to create a loop that will echo an attribute of each object in the array. The only success I've had, however, is echoing every object and every property of the objects. I've never dealt with objects so this is probably the TRUE root of the problem. There's been a few revisions but the only thing I've really excelled at is creating error codes. • Texture repeats even with GL_CLAMP_TO_EDGE set [FIXED]

  Hi, i'm trying to put a translucing texture on a face which uses points 1 to 4 (don't mind the numbers) on the following screenshot Sadly as you can see the texture repeats herself in both dimensions, I tried to switch the TEXTURE_WRAP_S from REPEAT to CLAMP_to_EDGE but it doesn't change anything.   Yes I know that it shouldn't be abused and that C# is primariy used as a static language. But seriously folks if you could just dirty up some code, in the python style, or create some dynamic do hicky, would you? My mind is working overtime on this having spent a while loving the dynamics of python, is c# going over to the dark side through the back door? Is the argument for static typing a dead one with this obvious addition? Is the argument for less Unit testing a bit silly when we are all grown ups? Or has the addition of dynamics ruined a strongly static typed and well designed language?

• How can I create a custom cleanup mode for git?

  Git's default cleanup of strip removes all lines starting with a # character. Unfortunately, the Trac engine's wiki formatter uses hashes in the beginning of a code block to denote the syntax type. Additionally any code added verbatim might include hashes as they are a common comment prefix; Perl comes to mind. In the following example the comments all get destroyed by git's cleanup mode. Example: {{{ #!/usr/bin/perl use strict; # say hi to the user. print "hello world\n"; }}} I'd like to use a custom filter that removes all lines beginning with a hash from the bottom of the file upwards. Leaving those lines that being with a hash that are embedded in the commit message I wrote alone. Where or how can I specify this in git? Note, creating a sed or perl script to perform the operation is not a problem, just knowing where to hook it into git is the question.

• Microsoft Team System Equivalent stack.

  I am looking for a free alternative to TS. What would be the best alternative stack(source control, bug tracking, project management/planning, wiki, automated builds (ci))? Keeping in mind that it would be nice if they all integrated well. For example, it would be nice to be able to link bugs to source control, and then be able to link to a project plan and then be able to automate building. I do not have issues with using Microsoft project to manage project planing. I know i would like to use these....: SVN TeamCity NUnit But i am struggling to find a good Wiki/Project Planning/Bug tracking, that would integrate well. Any questions let me know.

• How to avoid becoming a programmer while still beign closely involved with computer science/Industry

  I am studying computer science (A masters at an Ivy league), however most of the jobs i find involve way too much of programming. And frankly programming is not an issue, however programming without a meaning (read financial institution (non trading), other non mainstream jobs) bore me to death! I dont want to end up becoming a .NET,C#, Java kind of programmer. Can someone tell where i should look for jobs if i wish to do some real computer science work such as Machine Learning etc. I don't mind programming but becoming a Financial Software dev at Bloomeberg or an SDET at Microsoft isn't actually one of my goals. [note: I have interviewed for intern both positions listed above, and thankfully i got an intern for a data mining position in a top 750 Alexa rank web company] Sorry if angered anyone with a subjective question

• Scheduling jobs from a web environment on Linux

  Hi. I am developing an application in PHP on Linux/Apache. I want to be able to schedule PHP jobs (scripts) for execution at some specific time in the future from within the application. I know that many people will recommend cron and at, but first of all I don't need recurrence (cron) and secondly and most importantly, I need the solution to be able to scale. At was not designed with race condititions in mind, and if two users try to add a job at the same time one or both may fail. It's also important that jobs are executed at their specified time, and not just 'polled' once per minute or so. Can anyone please suggest solutions for this task? Thank you.

Currently we have a snippet which looks like this: <setting name="FirstSetting" serializeAs="String"> <value>Data Source=C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ApplicationData\Company ...;Persist Security Info=False</value> What I'd like to do is have it instead point to something like ${PROGRAMDATA}\Company\... • Specify test method name prefix for test suite in junit 3

  Is it possible to tell JUnit 3 to use additional method name prefix when looking up test method names? The goal is to have additional tests running locally that should not be run on continuous integration server. CI server doesn't use test suites, it look up for all classes which name ends with "Test" and execute all methods that begins with "test". The goal is to be able to locally run not only tests run by integration server, but also tests which method name starts with, for example "nocitest" or something like that. I don't mind having to organize tests into tests suite locally, since CI is just ignoring them.

  Hello I'm getting a bunch of weird html output in users messages e.g. \u0644\u064a\u0646\u0643 \u0627\u0644 \u0639\u0627\u0645\u0644 I assume their aribic characters decoded? How can I perhaps preg replace all these codes with something a little more useful? because search results are filled with pages and pages of this stuff Perhaps even display them as they're supposed to be? Any advice what to do with such strings and how to implement them appreciated.. Please keep in mind this stuff is mixed in been common language letters / numbers many thanks

• Developing and deploying games for Windows, Mac (& Linux)

  I want to write games that run on all the major platforms. I also want people to be able to play them by downloading a file and double clicking it. That means a single .exe/.app file. I'm happy to use OpenGL directly for graphics. What I don't know how to do is show a window, handle mouse/keyboard input and play sounds in a cross-platform manner. I don't really mind what the underlying language is, as long as it isn't C++ or Java. C#, Ruby or Python would be preferable, in that order :) Please, SO, save me from having to write Flash games!

Explain $x[1][11]=11; $x[1]=1; var_dump($x); In the above code i get only x[1]. To right would be $x[1]=1; $x[1][11]=11; var_dump($x); But in my case i can dot ensure that x[1] will come first, and x[1][11] will come after. • Is it possible to use JavaScript to break the HTML of a page?

  I've been asked at work whether it is possible to write, on purpose or by accident, JavaScript that will remove specific characters from a HTML document and thus break the HTML. An example would be adding some JavaScript that removes the < symbol in the page. I've tried searching online and I know JavaScript can replace strings, but my knowledge of the language is negligible. I've been asked to look into it as a way of hopefully addressing why a site I work on needs to have controls over who can add bespoke functionality to the page. I'm hoping it's not possible but would be grateful for the peace of mind!

• Dynamic binary from file

  This is a little bit of weird problem here. Say I have a C++ code, running on a specific platform. The only purpose of this code is to run files containing binary, NATIVE to that platform. Now - my question is - HOW would I get the data from these files (could even be by bits, like 1024 bits a cycle) to the memory of machine running my code so that this data would be in the execution part? In other words, can I get the data to somewhere where I can point the instruction pointer? If yes, how? I don't mind if I have to use assembler for this - just so it would work.

The effect I want to create is shown on this page Requirements I don't want to use images I don't mind using CSS3 It should be easy to align the whole thing in the center (which makes it harder to use position: absolute;). • How to regularly merge two git repositories, one with submodules into one without

  I maintain a Drupal project in a git repository containing submodules. This works well for me overall, and I like the submodule approach. However, I would like to move my site to a hosting provider that offers deployment via git push but doesn't work with submodules. I would like to keep my current repository intact, and then when I'm ready to deploy, I would like to merge the changes from my repository into the deployment repository, but any submodules need to be exported into the tree. So, it needs to be (semi) automated, so I can just run a command or two and initiate the merge, and then push to the server. Ideally it would keep track of individual commits, but I wouldn't mind if it squashed them into a single commit. How would be the most effective way to achieve this?

• Problem with number/type of arguments passed to an overloaded c++ constructor wrapped with swig.

  I am trying to wrap a c++ class (let's call it "Spam") written by someone else with swig to expose it to Python. After solving several problems, I am able to import the module in python, but when I try to create an object of such class I obtain the following error: foo = Spam.Spam('abc',3) Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> File "Spam.py", line 96, in __init__ this = _Spam.new_Spam(*args) NotImplementedError: Wrong number of arguments for overloaded function 'new_Spam'. • jQuery version of YAHOO.lang (isUndefined, isNull, isString etc.)

  Does anyone know of a jQuery plugin that has 'helpers' or extensions like those found in the YAHOO.lang namespace? I have in mind functions such as: isNull isDefined isString isFunction I would also appreciate the same kind of thing for strings and arrays, such as Contains, StartsWith (I know these are easy to write, I'm just looking for a plugin that encompasses them all). It's not in the YAHOO.lang namespace but also form related extensions- determining a radiobox's value (from the one checked), a form element's type in a friendly name. Specifically a plugin with fluent API rather than selector based such as $("input[@type=radio][@checked]") Again I'm aware they're easy to implement but I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

• Is Catching a Null Pointer Exception a Code Smell?

  Recently a co-worker of mine wrote in some code to catch a null pointer exception around an entire method, and return a single result. I pointed out how there could've been any number of reasons for the null pointer, so we changed it to a defensive check for the one result. However, catching NullPointerException just seemed wrong to me. In my mind, Null pointer exceptions are the result of bad code and not to be an expected exception in the system. Are there any cases where it makes sense to catch a null pointer exception?

  I have a jTable with columns 'Job_no' and 'Status'with values such as: Job_no Status 1 Active 2 Pending 3 Pending I would like it so that if a user clicks on a Status say in this case the first 'Pending'(where Job_no = 2) an inputDialog pops up allowing the user to change the status of the cell clicked-how can I do this? Bear in mind you will also have to retrieve the Job_no(that corresponds to that status) somehow, and that, though I'm OK with JOptionPane's, I'm new to JTables. I'm using JDBC(mySQL) and have a table 'Jobs' which amongst other things, has column Job_no and status. Thanks for your help.

  This thing is really wracking my mind. I'm learning C++ and I wanted to define a constant that I can use in another function, A short answer on how to do this will be fine.. Lets say at the beginning of my code I want to define this constant: //After #includes bool OS = 1; //1 = linux if (OS) { const ??? = "clear"; } else { const ??? = "cls"; } I don't know what type to use to define the "clear" string... I'm so confused. Later on I want to use it within a function: int foo() { system(::cls); //:: for global return 0; } How would I define the string up top, and use the string down below? I heard char only had one character and things... I'm not sure how to use , since it says it's converting string into const char or something.

• How to create a gesture controlled rotating image for a UI

  I'm trying to figure out the best way to make an image rotate along with a user's finger dragging it left or right. I want to try and match the rate a user's finger is moving with the rate the image is rotating. I've got the basic setup for my application going, with the menus and whatnot I want to have, and that's all running great on the emulator, I'm just not sure how to approach this part. I can code all the logic I need for my app, I'm just not doing to well designing the UI, I have a picture in mind, I've actually made a couple mock images of it, I just can't figure out how to get it going in Android, and any help would be appreciated.

• Is there a semantic difference <span>'s and <div>'s?

  I know when coding HTML, I'm supposed to keep semantics in mind, e.g., h1 needs to be a main header, h2 needs to be a subheader, tables need to be tables, use <em> for emphasis instead of <i>, etc. Is there a proper difference between divs and spans except one is a block and the other is in-line? When I was learning I was told that <span>'s were for styling text mid-line. If I had a small blurb of text that I needed positioned at a certain point in my webpage, one that doesn't warrent a <p> tag, would I use a span should I stick with div's? What if that text needs to cover two lines (i.e., it needs a width) if it contains nothing but text, what should I use?
