I am using Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD and is trying to restore grub2 after installing Windows 7 in another partition. • System State Backup Retention Policies

  I was wondering if there was a general consensus on how long to keep system state backups. I am trying to reevaluate our current backup process, and trying to get a good handle on our current storage requirements. Our current setup involves tapes and sending backups offsite with Barracuda Networks. We have been doing our system state backups with Barracuda now, which does full backups daily, leaving our storage requirements growing quite quickly. My boss is a little too gung-ho with backups and wants our system states saved for quite a while. We currently have 5 days of nightlies, 5 weeklies, 3 monthlies, and so on. I think this is quite overkill for system state backups. My boss wants the ability to go back in time to find when an issue appeared, but I don't think that is practical. Many things change in the course of several months. I also think it would be hard not to notice problems with our DCs and other servers for several months. I would think that a previous week's snapshot and the current week's dailies would suffice. Any advice or reading you can point me to? Thanks!

• Sony Bravia KDL-32L5000 PC resolution slightly off

  I have a PC running two Nvidia 8500 GTs in SLI mode and I am trying to use my TV in dual mode. When I switch the TV to PC the screen is nearly centered with a slight offset. All resolutions are effected from 800x600 all the way up to the TVs native 1360x768. I have tried with SLI on and off and have PhysX turned off as well as I thought that might have an effect. I am running Windows XP 64-bit SP2 DirectX ver 9.0c Nvidia driver version 181.22 Any other information please let me know. Thanks in advance.

  I have been using the tuning-primer.sh script to tune my my.cnf settings. I have most things working well but the part about TABLE CACHE makes no sense: TABLE CACHE Current table_cache value = 900 tables. You have a total of 0 tables You have 900 open tables. Current table_cache hit rate is 1% , while 100% of your table cache is in use. You should probably increase your table_cache When I do SHOW STATUS; I get the following table-related numbers: Open_tables = 900 Opened_tables = 0 It seems like something is going wrong. I have some extra memory I could use on increasing the table_cache size, but my sense is that the 900 tables already available aren't doing anything, and increasing it will just waste more energy. Why might this be happening? Are there other settings that could cause all my table_cache slots to be used even though there are no hits to them? I have 150 max connections and probably no more than 4 tables per join, FWIW. Here is the tuner script output for temp tables, which I've also been tuning: TEMP TABLES Current max_heap_table_size = 90 M Current tmp_table_size = 90 M Of 11032358 temp tables, 40% were created on disk Perhaps you should increase your tmp_table_size and/or max_heap_table_size to reduce the number of disk-based temporary tables. • Acrobat 9 Pro - shortcut key failure

  I create numerous Acrobat PDF files from MS Word documents via Acrobat 9 Pro. I often need to print a single page from an Acrobat PDF file. I normally use the keyboard shortcut Control-P (Print Dialog) and ALT-U (current page). I recently set up a new PC with Windows 7, and this shortcut combination does not work. When I press ALT-U, it moves the highlight to the correct item, but does not select the radio button. If I press the Enter key, then I print the entire document instead of the current page - VERY annoying! It looks like there is an error in the design of the Print dialog for Acrobat. There are two items which have ALT-U as the keyboard shortcut. They are "Current page" in the Print range frame, and "Summarize comments". I have been able to use Control-P (Print Dialog) and ALT-U (current page) with no problems on virtual machines and older computers running Windows XP. Maybe I installed some software on the new PC that is messing up the keyboard shortcut. Is there any way to figure out the culprit - or is this a known problem with Acrobat?

If you plan to use name-based virtual hosts, remember that they only work with your non-secure Web server. But not able to figure out how to run two ssl application on same server. Can any one help me?

• Macbook Pro (SantaRosa) internal display not detected by graphics card, external monitor OK

  My MacBook Pro (2.4 Ghz, Santa Rosa with infamous nVidia card) acts strange. It shows the normal gray screen with Apple logo and animation flawlessly during start up but the internal display goes black without any rendering at all when all is loaded. (shining a light on display show nothing) If an external monitor is connected through the DVI port it will remain black during start up and then show the desktop as the internal display goes black. This happens both while booting to Mountain Lion and Windows XP. I have checked "About my Mac" and only the external display is listed. The same is the case if I use the nVidia Control panel in Windows XP. My questions: Is this a hardware problem or is it related to software maybe even firmware? What controls the display during start up, graphics card or something else?

• Changing the default boot option without losing the boot menu

  I've had a working multi-boot setup with the Windows boot loader, containing menu items for two Windows 7 systems, and one for Grub. Grub in turn contains multiple menu items, but I think that's not relevant here. I've upgraded one system to Windows 8. When I now set a different system as the default, I lose the boot menu, and I lose the possibility of booting into the other systems. I've set Windows 7 as the default, rebooted, and get Windows 7, but I don't get to choose which system to boot into. I can run its own bcdedit to change the default back to Windows 8, and another reboot shows the boot menu again, but how can I avoid defaulting to Windows 8? • Multiple Graphics cards - Non Multi-Display Setup

  Is it possible for me to utilize the processing capabilities of multiple graphics cards, even if I'm only using one monitor? I recently bought a new AMD graphics card, fairly top of the line. I also have a two year old, decent nVidia card. They're obviously very different cards. I don't really mind for gaming because my current card can handle most games fine by itself. I'm concerned about video editing programs such as Adobe Premiere and After Effects. Would the system be able to utilize the power of both cards to, say, render a video? I have both drivers still installed on my machine. And because there is only one monitor connected to my current graphics card (AMD) the nVidia would be connected to no display. So I am wondering whether it would or could be utilized in some way to help in processing video. Thanks!

• Monitor "forgot" its native resolution overnight

  I have: Hanns G HW173A monitor NVIDIA GTX 460 graphics card Windows XP SP3. It was working. Suddenly overnight I can no longer use my monitor's native resolution of 1440x900. It's not listed, and if I force it it only shows part of the screen. The only resolution that seems to fit the whole screen is now 1024x768. I have tried reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers as well as disabling and enabling the monitor drivers (for windows XP the monitor uses the microsoft "default monitor" drivers - this is what Hanns G says on their website too). Any ideas? Thanks very much.

• Alienware m15x (older model) BSOD investigation

  A frined of mine asked me to help him with an Alienware m15x laptop that had a little service history. It was bought in june 2008, serviced in january 2009 for a random fps drop problem, Alienware returned it saying nothing was wrong. The laptop still had hiccups, but after juggling a few drivers and settings, the fps drops weren't as noticeable. Eventually it died in Sept. 2009. It would not boot up locking itself on a white/gray screen. (i think it was overheating .. clocking in 100 degrees Celsius). So back to Alienware it went. They replaced the GPU and all was fine. Up until these blue screens started showing up. One other thing that was updated was the HDD and a Windows 7 reinstall, in August. From then on it seems to have started its BSOD. Could this be the culprit? Why? 0_o The original Windows was Vista but it was upgraded with a digital download/purchase of Windows 7 Home Premium and activated after installing windows. No errors on the old HDD, just on the latest installation. LE:Due note that now the old HDD is used to see if issues re-occur. So please, I am in need of someone who can interpret these windows dump files: Minidump I may have come to some conflicting conclusions. So if someone can clarify each dump/date and the probable cause/error it had; and a final conclusion or solution, we would be very grateful. • Xen VGA passthrough: is it possible to have dual GPU's with single monitor

  I hate dual-booting between Windows when I want to play a game and Linux when I need to work. I don't fancy running Linux in a VM and Wine almost never works for me. So, I'm thinking about buying a new mainboard and CPU that is compatible with Xen's VGA passthrough and HVM virtualization. I want to be able to switch between the Linux Dom0 and Windows DomU with ease, but the problem is I need two GPU's and have only one monitor. Right now I have a nVidia GTX 260 in my PC, but I also have a Radeon 4850 sitting in my closet that I was going to sell. My question is, can I salvage the Radeon card to run the Dom0 and have the nVidia card run the DomU while having some kind of device/software to connect them a single monitor? Power supply and airflow issues aside. If not, what would you suggest? Is this even possible?

• Laptop forgets second monitor when it goes to sleep

  I recently updated my nvidia driver... now I have to re-establish the connection to my second monitor everytime the laptop goes to sleep. When I open the NVIDIA control panel, the second monitor is listed there but the checkbox beside it has been cleared. Oddly my laptop screen is identified as display #3 and the external screen as display #4. Is there a registry key that I can clear to get them set back to #1 & #2? Will that fix the problem? Or is there a simpler solution. (It's a Dell Studio XPS laptop with GeForce 9500M running Windows Vista 64-bit) TIA Al

• Windows 7 boot error

  I am running windows 7 professional, everything was working fine until I installed a software driver clearner suggested by nvidia customer service and I cleaned only nvidia graphic driver installation since then my windows does not work at all. I can access everything from startup repair, did lots of time repair but nothing happened. System restore does not work it says c: drive is not available, its 100% there and I can access every file from command prompt. Almost two days passed and I applied every solution discussed on several forums, now only thing left is either install fresh windows (Which i really don't want to do) or update windows (which windows does not let me to do, it says I have to update it from windows) My question is there any way to update (not fresh/custom installation) windows from command prompt? P.s: Safe mode, safe mode command nothing works except startup repair option. I ran sfc /scannow no problem found. I also removed all attached hardwares. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Dual monitors on Windows - How do I set a different DPI or text size on each monitor?

  My laptop is a 15" wide screen running at 1600x1050, and in addition to that I connect an external 19" LCD which runs at 1280x1024. The problem with this setup is that if I increase the text size to make the laptop screen readable, the text on the external LCD is huge. Normal text on the LCD results in tiny text on the laptop. What options do I have to get around this? I'm using Windows 7 and the laptop is a ThinkPad T61 with an nVidia NVS 140M video chipset. I cannot find any per-display setting in Windows or the nVidia control panel to resolve this.

  This may be a general problem for all Windows XP portables, I don't know, I don't have a dedicated Windows portable. I'm running a MacBookPro Unibody (so it's using the Nvidia 9600M chip under Windows XP SP2). Is there any way to get my external monitor to be the "main"? Even when I use the Nvidia Control Panel to move the task bar to my external monitor, games still refuse to run on anything other than the internal monitor. (In full screen mode, of course, if it's in a window, I can drag it to the other screen, no problem) I know I'm missing something elementary here.

• Does Asus F8SV supports 1920*1080 resolution through DVI output? [closed]

  Devices: Asus F8Sv Laptop (Windows 7 ultimate, GeForce 8600m GT, display driver is 301.42, detected and downloaded from nvidia.com, VGA and DVI output interface) Gateway 23 inches LCD monitor (VGA, DVI-D with HDCP, and HDMI input) 18 pins DVI cable, VGA cable, both new. Problems: When connect laptop to monitor by VGA, resolution is automatically adapted to 1920*1080; but when using DVI connection, resolution on monitor is fixed to 1024*768, which is lower than my laptop default 1280*800. The maximum resolution in windows control panel is only 1024*768, while the Nvidia control panel provides options 1920*1080p and 1920*1080i, but clicking apply button does not work, the resolution just can not change. Possibly reason I guess: GeForce 8600m GT does not support 1920*1080 resolution through DVI outputs. Can anyone confirm it or give the real reason? edit: Problem solved by buying a HDMI to DVI-D adapter. Using this adapter and a HDMI cable, I can now enjoy 1080p movie.

• How to resolve CGDirectDisplayID changing issues on newer multi-GPU Apple laptops in Core Foundation

  In Mac OS X, every display gets a unique CGDirectDisplayID number assigned to it. You can use CGGetActiveDisplayList() or [NSScreen screens] to access them, among others. Per Apple's docs: A display ID can persist across processes and system reboot, and typically remains constant as long as certain display parameters do not change. On newer mid-2010 MacBook Pro's, Apple started using auto-switching Intel/nVidia graphics. Laptops have two GPU's, a low-powered Intel, and a high-powered nVidia. Previous dual-GPU laptops (2009 models) didn't have auto-GPU switching, and required the user to make a settings change, logoff, and then logon again to make a GPU switch occur. Even older systems only had one GPU. There's an issue with the mid-2010 models where CGDirectDisplayID's don't remain the same when a display switches from one GPU to the next. For example: Laptop powers on. Built-In LCD Screen is driven by Intel chipset. Display ID: 30002 External Display is plugged in. Built-In LCD Screen switches to nVidia chipset. It's display ID changes: 30004 External Display is driven by nVidia chipset. ...at this point, the Intel chipset is dormant... User unplugs External Display. Built-In LCD Screen switches back to Intel chipset. It's display ID changes back to original: 30002 My question is, how can I match an old display ID to a new display ID when they alter due to a GPU change? Thought about: I've noticed that the display ID only changes by 2, but I don't have enough test Mac's available to determine if this is common to all new MacBook Pro's, or just mine. Kind of a kludge if "just check for display ID's which are +/-2 from one another" works, anyway. Tried: CGDisplayRegisterReconfigurationCallback(), which notifies before-and-after when displays are going to change, has no matching logic. I can, theoretically, compared just the DisplayProductID and DisplayVendorID keys, but I'm writing end-user software, and am worried of a situation where users have two or more identical monitors plugged in. Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

• Cannot connect my Ubuntu to TV with HDMI

  Another problem in my way to Ubuntu world.. Trying to make things work Linux way, day 4, problem #5321: I have a Compaq laptop and Nvidia graphic adapter. I also have Panasonic TV, which I thought I could use as a second screen just like I used to to when I was still using Windows Vista with my laptop. Plug the screen to the comp and voilá, I can watch my videos on big screen. And a boll***s I can, not with ubuntu anyways. Nvidia x server (or whatever it's called) does recognize my tv. It's very badly designed gui as I can never be sure has it saved my changes or not (most often not), but I recon I've got that one sorted out. I haven't found a way to set a primary monitor there, but it does see there are two monitors, my laptop and the tv. So far so good. But then? Ubuntu's own monitor setting only sees the laptop screen. If I reboot (with the HDMI cable connected) I end up having a black screen. Then I have to take the cable away, cut the power off and restart the comp.. Please, help, any help would be appreciated! I would so much love to like this linux more than windows but it surely takes a lot of trying...

• Unity install removed window borders, and display drivers.

  I installed unity, used for a while. Then i installed gnome-shell, used it for a while. Now decided to switch back to standard. Gnome is not working the way it use to be. I am using T61 with nvidia-latest drivers. Following issues... Window borders are not showing. Installed compiz settings, and re-check window decorations option. I had to re-install nvidia driver, as when I tried to apply normal visual effects, it said no display driver found. Gnome panel is not coming, and mouse pointer is a "cross" than a "arrow". I then opened a terminal and enter gnome-panel. Panel came and window borders came back. Nothing is showing on desktop, and the right click is also not populating the menu. When i loging, an error message saying, docky did not start and it requires compiz to work. After starting gnome-panel from terminal, i went to systempreferencesAppearance. And selected normal visual effects. It activated, i selected keep the settings. Now when i restart or re-login, everything is gone. I have to run gnome-panel manually, and then re-enable visual setting. Ofcourse i can add gnome-panel in startup applications, but i want to know what has installing unity/gnome-shell has done, that these setting are messed up. I manually removed mutter, as Appearance application was showing mutter installed, cant enable effects. What shall i do to get back a standard gnome-desktop back.

  In Ubuntu 13.04, the Software Updater shows some apps as having updates, but they're non-selectable: It's not clear why they're greyed out. • After update, flash plugin playing video too fast or too slow

  Last night I did an update and reboot. After that, I couldn't reliably play any flash videos. They would either go too fast or stutter (as if they were buffering every 2 seconds). This occurs in both Firefox and Chrome, however I'll troubleshoot in Chrome because it's easier to enable/disable plugins at will. With PPAPI enabled (and npapi disabled), flash videos play at 1.5x speeds and audio is scrambled. With NPAPI enabled (and ppapi disabled), flash videos stutter and skip, despite showing a decent buffer. From one old thread, I went into pavucontrol and tried disabling the high def audio controller. I also tried disabling Totem plugin to no affect. • Restoring GRUB2 on Software RAID 0 after Windows 7 wiped it using Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD

  I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my system. However, I need to install Windows 7 back, and I expect that it would alter GRUB and it did. Right now, my partition on my Software RAID 0 looks like this: nvidia_acajefec1 is Ubuntu 10.10 and nvidia_acajefec3 is Windows 7. I've been following some guides around and I am always stuck at GRUB not able to detect the usual RAID content. I've tried running: sudo grub > root (hd0,0) GRUB complains it couldn't find my hard disk. So I tried: find (hd0,0) And it complains that it couldn't find anything. So I tried: find /boot/grub/stage1 It said "file not found". Here's the text from the console: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ grub Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time. [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. So I went to the suggested website, ** (http://grub.enbug.org/Grub2LiveCdInstallGuide) **try to look around, and try: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l Unable to seek on /dev/sda This is just the step 2 of the instruction in the http://grub.enbug.org/Grub2LiveCdInstallGuide and I cannot proceed because it cannot seek /dev/sda. However, ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo dmraid -r /dev/sdb: nvidia, "nvidia_acajefec", stripe, ok, 488397166 sectors, data@ 0 /dev/sda: nvidia, "nvidia_acajefec", stripe, ok, 488397166 sectors, data@ 0 So what now? Do you have an idea for how to make fdisk see my RAID array on live cd (Ubuntu 10.10)? Honestly, I am lost, very lost in trying to restore GRUB2 on this software RAID 0 system right now.
